“Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
The series also stars Kirby (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire”), Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter”), Alex Hernandez (“Invasion”), and James Cromwell (“Succession”), with guest stars Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”) and Sydney Chandler (“Don't Worry Darling”).
“Sugar” is created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films, marking their second series with Apple TV+ under Kinberg’s overall deal following “Invasion.” Colin Farrell, Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers. The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Two Popes”), who also executive produces, and Adam Arkin (“The Offer”), who also co-executive produces.

True Detective season 2 was terrible Hopefully this makes up for that.
The first two episodes were extraordinary. The character of JOHN SUGAR is utterly compelling. If this was a full series drop, I could not resist bingeing it. I hope each successive episode lives up to these first two x!

@MrAndreCoutinho I thought it was a pretty decent watch conpared to most of the garbage that they put out. It It was least favorite season out of the 3. I re-watched it recently I enjoyed it more the second time and after watching season 4, it seemed like a masterpiece.

I hate how Apple TV+ keeps an awesome pace of good tv shows and makes me keep subscribing to it.
It's worth subscribing with them unlike d+ aren't even into Entertaining anymore it's all about opposite way more nonsense about strong women in cringe way than good way.
I know. They have a lot in the pipeline too. Their sci fi TV series are top notch.

Just watched the first episode. Great to see a show without the current agenda and with barely any graphic violence. 10/10!!! Fazza rocks in this and those sporadic scenes from old classic movies along with the lead actor’s voiceover!!!!! Wow!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Not sure why but from the first minute I really like the atmosphere of the show.
Colin Farell is great in this and I like the character he plays, this kind of lonesome hero who dedicate his life to helping other people.
Hope this show is gonna continue.

Currently watching this. Looks very promising and is definitely delivering. The overall style of cinematograph, the visuals, the dialogue, the acting, the cast etc. is so immaculate. Definitely is one of the best shows, and one of the best shows I have seen in a while. Superb.

I was honestly against them doing streaming stuff but after seen many shows I was wrong & couldn't be happier be part of apple subscriber they better entertain than disney+ where they losing subs every day.

"Highest picture quality IMHO" Definitely with Disney not far behind. Netflix is hit and miss picture quality wise. Must be the type of cameras they are using. Netflix allow production/film companies to use the semi pro Sony FX3 and up on their productions. Apple & Disney only allow cinema grade professional film cameras on theirs.
I think Apple also streams at the highest bitrate on average, followed by Disney and then Netflix. So as an example (I don't know if this number is totally accurate), Apple might stream a 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 40megabits per second while Netflix might top out at 20.
If you want quality, watch a UHD BluRay. It makes everything else look and sound REALLY inferior. Too bad there are fewer and fewer releases these days…
generally speaking, all apple tv+ shows are super well produced, well shot but.. feel so generic. like there isn’t a vision of a director behind it but more of a corporate bureaucratic decision-making machine.
The writing we hear in this trailer is soooo generic, it hurts.
Thats pretty darn spot on. Production value and aesthetics are so high that you keep watching. But if feels like the soul is missing. Band of Brothers vs Masters of the Air is a great example. All Apple’s shows are good, not great.
I think Severance is an exception. Great singular vision imo from the writer and Ben Stiller's producing/slash directing is excellent.

It's crazy, look at how many amazing original shows and movies have come out in the past. Now it seems like when you find a good show/movie it's a treasure due to all of the horrible stuff they're pumping out. Are these writers really this bad and unoriginal? Most of the original stuff isn't good or they remake something and butcher it.
It appears Colin may have found the right tone for his performance in this piece.

Hard boiled detetctive vibes from the 40's and 50's. Ray Donovan was hardly orginal.
Absolutely Ray Donovan minus chaos the family drama but with a mysterious backstory, therapist & a canine sidekick.

After 2 episodes: So he can catch flies with chopsticks, doesn't react to alcohol, can guess when a person is lying, is physically superior to most people, speaks a lot of languages, injects himself with a strange substance, has weird nervous breakdowns, is seemingly under constant surveillance, he wonders why he has feelings, and he has friends who form a mysterious club... In one scene he seems to be studying human behavior patterns and right at the beginning of the first episode in the Japanese bar, he seems to be recognized as... something... Seriously, is he an alien, a robot or both?

I started this series recently. This is by far one of the more interesting shows. Narratively, it adopts Film Noir (protagonists POV) style but it isn't. Cinematography is a fascinating mix of story scenes of the moment intercut with scenes from classics pertaining to that moment and flashbacks from earlier in story. Keeps the audience attention. The best part is Sugar (protagonist) as played by Mr. Farrel. I'm on episode 3 and I have more questions than answers. Great show.
Colin Farrell never disappoints! Can't wait to see him in Sugar, it looks like it's going to be epic 🍿🎬
