    This movie makes me feel very dumb. I wish I could understand it. Lydon is just as snarky as ever. I love the evil little smile, and yet he is so vulnerable. He is one of my favorite humans.

    Barry Norman reviewed this film when it came out and praised Lydon’s performance. He was however unsure as to whether or not he was a good actor or merely just being himself so reserved judgement until he appeared in more films, which he didn’t unfortunately. In his book Anger Is An Energy Lydon talks about the whole experience, it’s pretty interesting.

      I remember the Barry Norman review. The clip they showed was when Keitel grabbed Lydon by his hair and shoved his head in the oven.
      It was decades later that I actually saw the film on dvd. It was fucking terrible. Lydon said acting didn't come natural to him when he's been acting all his life.😁

    John is a bit like Julian Sands here. He definitely could have had a career in acting with his looks and charisma, but that's if he would have wanted such a thing. He would have had to conform and not sure he would have wanted to.

  • @Dan_Ben_Michael
    @Dan_Ben_Michael Před 2 lety +2

    I was blown away to see mafia cop Stephen Caracappa was Harvey Keitel’s consultant on the film. This would’ve been at the height of his work as an associate for the New York crime families while he was a detective, sort of art imitating life in a way.

      I remember at the time reading something about him disliking the lack of creative control that actors have in the process. Directors and editors make the final choices on performances and takes and he didn’t like where that process went. Or something like that.

    This movie makes no sense whatsoever. Its main saving grace is that Harvey Keitel and John Lydon have enough talent and charisma to keep a viewer's attention throughout. It also stands as proof that some Ennio Morricone soundtracks are out-and-out clunkers.
    I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys movies in which good actors are forced to work with a ridiculous script. That's what makes this a fun watch, in my opinion.

    • @24secondsperframe68
      @24secondsperframe68 Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah Morricone is responsible for good chunk of the tonal problems here. With the raw material this film could be saved in an edit suite.

      I found this in the video rental store at my Army base back in the late '90s. Couldn't believe it existed. I was a huge Sex Pistols/PiL fan and wanted to see John Lydon in his own movie, opposite Harvey Keitel!
      Well, the movie isn't that good, through no fault of Keitel and Lydon. The editing and the score are strange and erratic. The initial plan was for Lydon's band Public Image, Ltd. to provide a soundtrack for the film, and that would've been interesting. To reiterate, it is the strange pacing and odd sound that doom this, not the performances, per se.

      Good question. I would say yes. How many corrupt cops would invest their ill gotten in a shared apartment no one else knows about? Also, when Bob tried to force Fred at gunpoint to release Leo, it seemed more as an expression of jealousy than any concern for Leo's well-being.
