He's not the only one 😄 Slow car fast and all that, I'll take an MX-5 over a Lamborghini every single time, at least in terms of pure driving enjoyment.
He's not the only one, a good friend of mine is an instructor for the supercar experience drives as well as working at an exotic car dealer and he races and loves Miatas
Supercars are that high maintenance hot chick you want to stick it to just to know what it’s like, but the Miata is marriage material.

Having a mostly stock NA, and always thinking "awe man how are these other miatas so much more powerful and crazy", it makes me feel better knowing both of those last cars have well over 30k invested in them haha. Awesome video!

Not to worry, 30k isn't needed for a little bit extra out of the mx5. Ideally supercharger and fitting would be the best and it would only set you back 6k ish.
Failing that, ebay turbo and fitting and a map would set you back about 3/4 and get you to 250ish bhp

I’ve been fortunate enough to drive a lot of really unique and fast cars. On a tight circuit, a supercharged NA or NB Miata blows everything else out of the water.

@@4R8YnTH3CH33F Unpopular opinion, but I hate the sound of superchargers. The whine is annoying to me, whereas a turbo sounds like pure bliss. But I'm talking in general. As for people who like superchargers but don't like them on a miata, I have no idea why.
you should have asked Jimmy Broadbent to borrow his Minty 600bhp mazda and add it on top for this list :D

Great video! Really shows the fun you get out of these. I had no interest in MX-5s until around 3 years ago when my subscribers chose it as my next project car... Now I can't find another car that puts as big a smile on my face (particularly after supercharging it like the one in this vid!)

Had a friend with a Nissan Z - complete opposite, gobs of power chore to drive, take the Mazda anyday.
After having a stock power 1.8 NB (150bhp) and a turbo 1.6 NB (235bhp), I preferred the stock power one. But also having a slightly modded R53 Mini, I think a supercharged MX5 around 200bhp would be the ideal.
You’re right. About 200hp at the wheels is the sweet spot. Not so much it’s overwhelming or hard to control. Enough to make it fun to drive and decently quick.
The supercharger is awesome because it’s linear and just adds power everywhere. But, people tend to go for a turbo since it’ll generally make more power.
Stock power for a 1.8 NB is about 140. It’s silly that many think that makes for a slow car. Around town and even on the open road it’s plenty of power to keep up. I hardly ever spin the motor above 5K on my NB and I’m still breaking speed limits.
Always wanted to get my ‘91 somewhere between 180-230whp seems to be a nice sweet spot. I would prefer a built NA 1.8 but certainly forced induction is the cheaper/easier route. Had plenty of fun at stock 116bhp!
Actually what am I saying, I had an S2000 before it and I would absolutely love to K swap it (F20C would be ideal but have to alter steering geometry). But yeah still- 180-230whp 😅

I really like the 200hp one! It's got the extra power and that awesome supercharger whine, but also manages to look like you might actually want to drive it on the road. I also prefer the mostly stock appearance it has, but that's purely subjective.
The flutter is just music to any car guy's ears. Will and Callum are accurate with their reactions.
To REAL "car guys" the flutter is damage to your turbo.

@@seansmith4440 Oh you're one to talk aren't ya? Too bad you can't seem to read either. I said "In this case, it isn't." Many turbos will flutter without ever facing issues - But these are almost always aftermarket options. (Key words are 'many' and 'almost', in case you didn't catch that the first time.) Bearing and oiling technologies play a key role in this. Your typical OEM turbos are not made to take the same abuse that this Borgwarner is.
But what do I know? I'm clearly not a 'car guy'.

My Uncle Gary raced Spec Miata here in The States and not out boy, were those cars FUN! He let me borrow one of the retired cars to run at a track day and no one could keep up with me, not when the dude in the new Porsche 911. The only guy who was close to my runs was driving an LS swapped FD3 RX-7(sacrilege, I know!). That little MX-5 was incredible through the corners and in braking, but sucked on the straight aways. Keeping momentum was key and that meant I could brake later, maintain speed my speed and get on the accelerator earlier.
I've driven a lot of fun and fast cars in my life, but that was something I'll never forget. It was also extra special since Uncle Gary didn't let people borrow his track cars.
Watching this awesome video made me sad because he passed away a few years ago, but it also brought back lots of great memories at his shop and spending time with him.

The 400bhp model's turbo flutter sounded like my KIA Proceed when it had a broken solenoid for 18 months - it took that long to diagnose. Can't believe Scott didn't know what the noise was 😂

Fun fact the “dump valve” they where talking about with the last mx5 doesn’t dump into the exhaust, that’s the waste gate. The reason it makes that noise is it could have a blow off valve venting to atmosphere, making that pssst sound but it doesn’t have one so all that pressure comes back out the front of the turbo
He meant "intake" as with a recirculating valve

@@SKOMPAS A recirculating valve will still make that noise, but usually louder with a pod style filter compared to a panel.
@@geometerfpv2804 he meant what he said. He is confused between a dumpvalve (wastegate) and a BOV. People that understand the difference dont explain it perfectly wrong like that.
I want to get that sound in my Honda L15C engine, but I got the HKS SQV valve, it doesn't sound like this, still looking for the answer :(

i had to do some suspension & engine repair work on one.after checking it out thouroughly.they are really thought out well for what they are.for the price point its a really good design, & fun to drive as well.

Just a tip for trackdays, for cars without bucket seat/ good belts
Just lock the usual belt, on your body, you need to push yourself as much as you can to the seat, then you lock belt on your chest, you are fixed with usual seat :)

You guys missed the opportunity to ask Jimmy Broadbent to lend Minty. That would be fun to watch.
Excess boost on the intake side is not vented through the exhaust. If they removed the bypass valve, the flutter you hear is compressor surge, and it kills turbos

A dump valve does not put boost pressure into the exhaust it goes either into atmosphere or back into the intake track both are better for the turbo than having it stall, just to make that noise.😮
I think he mixed up wastegate and blow off valve from too much boost. At least I hope.

I love the Miata. All of em. The NB and ND2 RF are my favs, but they are all great for various reasons. I like the Toyota powered Lotus's for similar reasons.

This video brought back memories of my 1990 Monster Miata, with its Mustang 5 litre motor and 5 speed transmission. I miss that car!

The issue is there isn’t much choice for V8 engines in the UK. The Rover (Buick) V8 is great but isn’t powerful without lots of mods, anything Jap is 3x the price, no LS options and the Germans all are super complicated.
That would be cool for a subjective test, but the various chassis setups would put a big asterisk on the timed results.

Not too keen on the wheels but 200hp in an MX5 is plenty, but that blue one looks the part and would definitely be my choice.
