I would like to see the rest of Votan in this style. They fight on alien worlds so justifying wacky light sources and color casts is easier. And you got a whole box right there. 😃
Developing a batch paint technique for this style would make a great video
Seconded. Would love to see them all done in this scheme, they'll look sweet.
Exactly, just finish the box.
Agreed! This is such a cool scheme!
This.... absolutely this
I agree, of course there are several armies this would look very good on. AOS Soulblight / Vampires / Skeletons would look awesome. You've already started with the Votann and I think seeing that whole box being unified with the character model would look awesome!
I'd definitely be interested in seeing this extended over a full army, maybe an army of squats?
I think that necrons would be another good option, specially for showcasing non-methallic metal with those awesome shadows.
@@hectorvizsla87 I like your thinking
Same leagues of votann all the way !
I'd like to see someone attempt to compress this style. You spent a lot of time carefully layering and blending, which felt appropriate for the model in question, but trying to pull it off across a whole army, how could you use the same general concepts of the style but to a tabletop standard in a quicker amount of time......
yeeeees I want to see the whole army like this!!
definitely would like to see an army painted that way. it looks so damn good
👀
My mind is blown. My color theory class (from honestly thirty years ago) just came rushing back, and this has re-opened my eyes. Well done, Jon.
I love the final look, like the model has this inner glow. Awesome.
Yes, a full start collecting box like this would be ace. Most models would work worth with this method but I think something like Eldar with both lots of smooth surfaces on the bikes/vehicles but nobbly bits on the dudes, so there would be a lot of balance of textures. Or if it's possible, custodes. Their start collecting box is wicked with a plethora of different textures and this shadow/NMM sharp highlights would work really well and perhaps be quite quick/streamlined.
"F* around and find out" is my favorite strategy for crafting.
You absolutely killed this, it’s super inspirational. The colored shadow / mother color looks like a great way to do some crazy frazetta styled armies. Maybe some of the Warcry kits? Untamed beasts
I would definitely love to see this painting style on a Tyranid Start Collecting Box, a Nighthaunt Faction or a Seraphon. You could do a lot with a mixture of vibrant colors in all of those. Plus, there’s only one tyranid video on this channel (would love to see more as a tyranid player).
Man, I think ‘Nids would look fantastic in this style with the vibrant colors and serious contrasts. Lizardmen too!
Nighthaunt is my DREAM, I want to see him do EXACTLY that!
I absolutely love craftworlds work, it’s so unique, and this is an AWESOME depiction of it. Great job!!
By far the coolest Space Dwarf I've seen yet. Please consider doing the rest of this box in this style.
First time I watched Ninjon, I instantly fell in love with his videos. I knew there was some sort of connection we both shared outside of Warhammer 40k and painting miniatures, but could never put a finger on it. At 1:42 I finally realized what that was after seeing his preferred bubbly beverage behind his left shoulder.
One of your best, so many people don't infuse colors to add depth and contrast and more importantly let those colors tell a story. Well done!
You guys pretty much saved my life .I'm a recovering addict, and one of our biggest enemies is idle time and boredom. I've been free of drugs for 12 years. But I was def getting board with life , with covid , racial issues and the world in general , I was loosing faith and def getting bored .Then there were minis .and a group of awesome folks to help me with my time. I actually use it as a kinda meditation. Anyway to keep it short , wanna thank you Jon, Miniac , Goobertown, Midwinter Minis, and rest of you know who you are .Thanks for saving me for me and my family.Stay safe , stay well and always remberrrrr toooo slay the grey, H a Ha !
I feel like drawing Noise Marines in this style would be a match made in heaven!
This turned out awesome! I love how it gives the model a cool cyberpunk underlighting look. It makes everything look like it had a neon glow.
The "unrealistic" paint scheme allows you to take shortcuts like you did with the sword, and still have it look fantastic. Great job, mate.
Really cool!
I think an eldar army (or squad or whatever) would look amazing with this technique.
Or maybe a Slaanesh daemons army.
Marko and Aleksandra are awesome. I'm glad you made this video, they deserve the recognition, they are changing the game. Forget your black and white zenithal underpainting and start using some pure magenta!
This was my favorite video you’ve done to date. So many amazing ideas and taking the time to talk to the wet palette and detailing tips was awesome, including the “going to take the time to show me blending the mid-tone with highlight” on the knee pit, err.. knee pad. Killer stuff, Ninjon!!!
Hot damn! Those "80's synth" colours are so good for the neo-Squats... Awesome job as always!
You know what…. I think you’re onto something here. I’ve been mini painting for 20 years and to be honest I can see some fantastic styles in just what you have shown us.
Keep it up good sir!
You made a subscriber outta me when you said you call this the “fuck around and find out method” 😂 We for sure have the same sense of humor. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff
"These are the questions that keep me up at night" he says holding a can of Mountain Dew
This technique of sorta 'under painting' your mini is absolutely fantastic, above all else it adds tons of atmosphere, but it also really pumps up those highlights, I keep scrubbing back to the reveal, seriously fun painting!
That is one awesome dwarf. And yes I would like to see the whole Votann set in this style
That tune that kicks in around 5:50 is fantastic! Oh man, this mini turned out great! That color in the shadows has a very... non-earth atmospheric lighting effect going on
“Fuck around and find out” I would buy that shirt John! 😂
I absolutely would love to see the rest of the starter box painted this way. Maybe with how long it takes either per model or overall to see how feasible it is in a timely manner to get an army done in this style. It is lovely and I love the contrast of these 3 colors.
The reason the gold really works, is because that's actually what the paintstyle is that you use as an inspiration. They use cold shadows and warm highlights to create an extra kind of contrast. You've made an amazing miniature, keep up the great work!
As for the army: yeah, do it! Just pick a faction with a warmer color on their armor. The new LoV box is already in your possession, so using them would be really cool I think.
Fair point on the wet palette. I often go back and try to keep painting with paint that’s out of whack. It makes a huge difference to just remix your paints.
I think this with the slapchop method has made my understanding of layering paint so much easier.
Yes, more Armypainting!!! I am serious.
I think Idoneth Deepkin would be perfect. Light effects in water both real and "fantastic" seem really interesting.
Definitely interested in seeing this done to a whole start collecting box, maybe death guard or khorne
I’m still waiting to see you do an army based on this technique!! ITS SO LOVELY!
Incredible outcome on that. The miniature has a really harmonic composition going on making it really easy in the eyes. I like the way you painted the armor and the face. Draws the eye exactly where you want to. Outstanding paintjob
This has got to be one of your best videos, super inspirational. This style would look amazing on a demon army.
Absolutely yes to a video on a whole box set painted like this, I vote Tyranids!
this was really cool and well articulated, and I also adore the painting style of those two you cited; props for recognizing their style as your inspiration
With everyone else on CZcams painting squats right now this is by far the absolute best color scheme I have seen. Please finish the box these are amazing!
I'd definitely like to see rest of the box painted in this style, I've often really liked craftworld studio's painting style, think I never really gave it a try to painting it as them. this came out really well (if I remember correctly, I think they take a quite few more steps just in the priming/shadow colours, before all the layering stuff starts, so if you manage to do in this style quickly, I'll definitely try start painting at least a model and maybe a squad.
I would love to see the rest of the leagues of votan box like this, it was so great!
This is so amazing, and I'm so glad you kept those colors on the sword! ☺️ So pretty!
5:05 Yes. That's what I've been doing for years. Even with a properly set up wet palette and regularly mixing the pigments, the qualities of the paint change over time.
I would love to see a few different Nurgle units paint in a similar way.
Thank you from Ukraine for supporting our children Ninjon, my own Kyiv Infinity arrived yesterday, joining my Squidmar airbrush.
This shows some real evolution in your style and your thinking, Jon - well done!
I for one really hope to see you do more like this.
Beautiful result and your descriptions of every step are crystal clear. Thanks.
This is a bit of an odd one, but I'd love to see you do something like this with Grey Knights. I feel like there are way to many "Slap on some Drakenhof Nightshade and call it a day" GKs and seeing a more dynamic, yet still efficient paint scheme would be pretty cool. Plus, if you could pull it off on (basic) Silver Boys, I feel like it could be translated to pretty much any faction in armour.
lets go!!!!
I'm glad you're figuring out how quickly building values with layers instead of glazes. Next stage: doing a glaze after this point to get perfect blends quickly.
Back breaking army painting videos are the best videos 🙌🏻
Wow absolutely gorgeous. Had an army of Chaos when I was 12 in 2000 and looking to get back into the hobby. Just having a tough time choosing a SM chapter because I don’t like the colour schemes. This video is exactly what I needed, I’m sure I will butcher it compared to this masterpiece but you have inspired me! Now just need to choose a chapter 🤔
I decided on the chapter I would like to join in real life, if given the honor.
After you paint up your first squad, the color feels less and less important.
@@Gorbachoph decided on blood angels! Excited to buy my first models
I stopped watching a Vince video when this notification popped up.
How dare you?
Lol
Yea? I was on the job, jumped off the wife, had to put headphones on to drown out the wife. Dunno what her issue is ... I mean it is Ninjon!
This has been my favorite style for a while. You did a great piece with it. Please do more!
Tyranids and Seraphon would look amazing with all the different colours popping out. Would love to see it.
I love this technique! It looks so vibrant and interesting. Definitely interested in seeing you paint more in this style.
This model turned out fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Going to have to watch again.
Wow. The paint job looks surreal with the brighter shadow color. Nice work!
Superb! You have just become a real pro painter, it is grateful to see your progress all over the years and to try always new ways of painting and doing things an also inspire and encourage others to do so. Thank you! 🤩🙌🏻
Cutting down to a small selection of colours is amazing. I paint with only the core Kimera set. Even if you don't want to discard all your other paints you can pick projects to use with a limited palette.
Even with the new Space Dorfs being as hideous as they are, your paint job really did some magic with the mini. Great job.
A Lord Kroak in this style would be absolutly amazing!! 😍
Only just found your channel. Your presentation style is so chill, but also filled with class and value. Really impressed, love what I've watched so far! Subbed.
This looks freaking amazing. Ever time I come to this channel I'm blown away.
this is the best painting channel for miniatures of them all.
!
Holy heck Jon, that mini looks amazing!
Thanks for your awesome videos!
Excellent video! I have been excited to see these models come out, and your interpterion of the mini looks cool. I would love to see you continue with this color set on the other mini's in the set.
That's beautiful, well done Jon.
You dropping in that little Stalecracker at the end had me choking on my coffee man. That was brilliant😂
I thought I was the only one that caught the Stale Kracker reference. That paint job is pure money dude
Oh yeah, do a whole army like this, totally! I would LOVE to see how that turns out!
Great video and I love to see more of this in the future!
Marco and Aleksandra don't only use these special shadows to set the shadows, in many of their tutorials they also mention using the colors as volumes, which will provide different colorations when the actual layer begins on top of it. Their specific kind of underpainting is phenomenal, and while underpainting is nothing new, their are very few using the technique like they are. And definitely none that use it as well.
Marko's Lumineth army is a pure work of art, and I personally consider it the best army I ever saw painted. The way the colors interact, and the non conventional choices for colors is sublime.
Absolutely beautiful piece, Jon
You're right, this is all color/light theory, it's something I learned a lot about in the stage design and lighting design classes I took. Since you use a lot of colored light in theater you have to be very aware of how the light will interact with the set and costume. It's possible to pull off some really cool effects by changing light color and direction.
The red/blue combo is the industry standard because it sets the light source and creates the effect of shadow without leaving details in darkness. If you observe the shadows in the people around you you'll notice that shadows aren't usually black, they're the same color as whatever they're on.
Thank you for this video, it was very inspiring
Drukhari in this style would look ASTONISHING
Such an interesting technique - the final result turned out phenomenal, nice work Jon! Excited to give this style painting a try sometime soon
Dude….you are a true professional!
"Fuck around and find out" had me laughing out loud. Scared the cat.
Dabbing the brush before putting to model is one of those secret techniques that seems so rarely mentioned by might be the biggest game changer when I finally learned about it. I feel like it's just this assumed thing every one knows, but it's valuable when mentioned.
I'd absolutely love to see more like this, great work on that model!!
This is honestly my favourite video of yours to date, thank you!
I'm sure this comment will get lost in the sea of praise, but I'm commenting to say that I've seen this miniature IRL (i won't name the store for sake of privacy) and it is just breathtaking. I spend a long while staring at it anytime I visit- it's beautiful. So bright, so vibrant. Glad to find the video featuring it!
This is a very cool method.
What I'd like to see is the same model, but different color schemes.
What about an orange-red-yellow? Green-blue-yellow?
Bust out that color wheel and see what comes up.
Don't get too big a head but your channel is one of the better hobby channels on CZcams. This video is a perfect example.
I don't think you nailed exactly what you were looking at but I still think that paint job looks amazing like a hybrid between their paint scheme and your normal style. Awesome job dude!
That just glows! Looks great
Yeaaaah great video! Another vote here for seeing the rest of the box done in this style. I always pick up new inspiration and techniques from your videos - thank you!
Looks awesome Jon, keep up the great work and spread that knowledge.
I feel a little silly saying this, but thank you for vocalizing your formula thinning your paint. I've known for a long time that paint needed to be thinned, but I could never figure out what I was aiming for. Now I have the foundation start from. So thank you for not just glossing over the basics.
You’re awesome, Jon! I love this video and I’ll probably be watching it tens of times. Please make more like this (Craftworld’s style made easier + the Mother Colour approach), and calling on your idea to let us know how it would work out for an army!
This is definitely where I want to get to in my painting. Still learning brush work and brush control before investing in an air brush. But all the details the NMM and approach are all great things for me to learn.
I thought it was impossible to replicate the craftworld studio style. You are amazing.
You did an impressive paint job, the result is fabulous. It's really, really beautiful! I love this style with all these shades of colors. Congratulations to you, and thank you for your videos. Thanks, From France!
I'm 100% with you on the paint behavior with a wet palette. I switch my paints out pretty often even on my wet palette.
This was a great video and I love to see how well your experiment turned out!
This is a spectacular video. Obviously the result is outstanding, but more than that, this is probably the best example I can immediately think of of a minipainting youtuber breaking down some advanced concepts and techniques in a very accessible way, demonstrating techniques clearly and talking about why the effect is working.
It's made me want to try something like this and given me some confidence that I could potentially get a good result.
Such a great tutorial, once again, Jon! You really got me itching to paint and to push techniques further. I love how you open different painting techniques right up and make them seem so accessible. I'd love to see you really rev up the colour scheme of a Stormcast Eternals war band. Make them extra spicy! Thanks again.
Would love to see a whole army done!! Love the older videos when you paint mass units! Finish the voltan army or maybe the new lumineth release? Or Tau they would look good in this style!
I'm very lazy so will never do this but I love that arty surreal colour style. A thin gloss varnish between coats can help with correcting mistakes. You can easily scrub back a small layer of paint on gloss, in one small area, and quickly repaint.
Color scheme is amazing. Paint application flawless. I'm stunned. Well played Sir! I love the purple shadows!
