Met him at a golf tournament in the mid-90s. Nice guy. I asked him what he does now and he said “I’m Bobby Orr. That’s my job.”

One other BIG reason that goal is so famous is....it was an AFTERNOON GAME! All the kids were still awake to see it live! Including 6 year old me!!
I was 6 at that time as well living in Cambridge. I was watching that game at my neighbors house. It was mother's day and my mom was in the hospital. She was a good Canadian woman who passed away 3 years later.
Very nicely done. I was blessed to be alive and and saw this live. A nine year old kid. The Boston Bruins were legends to me. Thank you.
I grew up near Worcester, MA. Every kid I knew did the Bobby Orr "jump" when diving into a pool.
It was great being a kid watching him play and being a boston fan living in Providence, r. I
I really enjoy Providence. Used to gig at the Livingroom. Federal Hill blows the North End away!

I got Bobby Orrs autograph at St. Michael's college arena in Toronto back in 1997.

There's a statue of his dive in front of the TD Garden in Boston MA where Bruins, Celtics, and concerts are held and the main train station is in the same vicinity. As a college student commuting in and out of Boston, I walked by it every day. Now I know the story behind it
Noel Picard (#4 who tripped Bobby Orr on this goal) related a story of how Bobby Orr helped his daughter to pay for her education and housing at school.
From a life-long St. Louis Blues fan: Robert Gordon Orr is the greatest player in hockey history. As a young Blues fan, I remember holding my breath whenever he got the puck. It could've been behind his goal, setting up behind Cheevers/Johnston and surveying things -- the opponent was already in some degree of peril. You watch Orr highlights, and after 1-2 strides you can see the eyes popping -- "Oh, *&!&%#!! -- on all the checkers. Bobby Orr changed the game forever, he needed no one to watch his own back for him, no superstar in any sport has ever been more humble... I could go on and on. Number 4 is the greatest ever.

Who do you think would most likely win a mythical game between five Orrs on the ice and five Gretzkys? Between five Orrs on the ice and five Howes?

And another thing that rarely gets mentioned, Bobby Orr, #4, scored the 4th goal, in the 4th period of the 4th game of the series, in his 4th year with the Bruins.
yep, I also mentioned this in the comments, and it was Boston's 4th cup, and he scored the goal at the :40 second mark. God showing his hand ....
I remember this vividly, I was only 11 years old and watching it in the basement and when Orr scored I ran outside to tell my Dad who was cutting the grass. Some things stay in your head fprever and this is one of them.
I went to my bathroom and left the door open because I was too nervous to watch the overtime so I never saw the goal live only saw the replay.

I'm not the first to say this, but what are the odds that No.4 scores Boston's 4th goal of the game in the 4th period, winning the 4th game of the series at the :40 second mark to win the Stanley Cup? Later that year, Orr won all 4 trophies, it was Boston's 4th Stanley cup, and it was Orr's 4th year in the league. And one of the 2 cameramen who witnessed the development (in the darkroom) of Orr's famous photo flying through the air? His last name was Forman. Now that indeed is picture perfect!

Orr is my uncles neighbor. hes an even better man than a player. one year on the 4th of july my aunt and uncle realized my cousin wasnt with them, they started looking for him up and down the street as the fireworks started, only to find my cousin on sitting on the shoulders of Bobby Orr, watching the fireworks. Orr does anything in his power to make any and every kids night, regardless of the situation

Reminds me of a goal Modano scored when sweeping across the crease, getting tripped up going airborne and STILL moved the puck around the goalies foot into the back of the net, it was freaking insane 😂

I was drinking a beer at the time. Needless to say my beer bottle hit the ceiling so hard it actually smashed after that goal. I remember it like it was yesterday!

Yes, and the Blues two best defensemen, Al Arbour and Barclay Plager were out with injuries. That really put the Blues in an impossible hole.
Me too. A fuzzy B&W TV with a 16 inch screen. About the size of a lap top screen. And when you wanted to change the channel you had to get up and walk across the room and turn a dial, LOL. What a primitive age we grew up in.

I knew he can fly and score at the same time, secure his defensive zone while doing so, block the other team's players just passing by, substitute the goalie in real time and of course, all this and more, while selling popcorn along the bleachers all the time. Iron Ore at its best, the true American one man team ... I forgot ... all this on one leg, the injured leg of course.

This series was barely watched; St Louis was a hopelessly untalented team just there because of expansion. Theatrics like this didn't strike me as amazing. On the other hand, Orr was the most gifted hockey player I have watched matched only by Gretzky.

The Blues were playing without their two best defenseman Barclay Plager and Al Arbour. In their place Bowman had to use two minor league defensemen, Ray Fortin and Billy Plager. It made a difference.
5 Bobby Orrs would destroy 5 Wayne Gretzkys...That's how you can tell who the greatest was...5 Bobby Orr's would beat 5 Mario Lemieuxs also but it would be closer than 5 Gretzkys. I don't understand the part about it being a big deal that he "called the goal" -- it seems obvious that they scored to me.
I should know this, but five hole? Hard to see
I don't see the big deal. He scored a goal, then got tripped afterward. The trip had no bearing on the play. The goal was in the back of the net, before Picard's stick ever made contact w/ Orr's foot. When I read about this goal, it was made out to be Orr flying through the air and scoring a goal, and that's not at all what happened.
Want to see a real flying goal? Look up Bossy in the finals vs Vancouver. Not only did the Boss actually score mid air, he also roofed it on the backhand!!! The Orr goal wasn't even close to what Mike Bossy did.

He scored the goal, saw it went in and then "flew" through the air. I understand his jubilation but Orr taking flight had nothing to do with the goal itself. This goal's contribution to hockey lore is all hype.
