Problematic F1 Cars - 2015 Mclaren MP4-30

  • The Mclaren-Honda F1 disaster of 2015 is an interesting one! When they originally announced they were going to be leaving Mercedes to get back in bed with legendary engine manufacturer Honda, poised to make their Formula 1 return in 2015 with Mclaren, it sparked a lot of interest. But it may not have went the way everybody thought.
    Through pre-season testing accidents with Fernando Alonso, to 4 back to back DNF's, the teams worst scoring season in their history, Honda's terrible reliability and more, there's certainly a lot to talk about.
    This was supposed to bring Mclaren back to the top, it was supposed to put Mclaren back onto the podium and back into winning form. What went wrong?

    The work that Toro Rosso made with Honda, allowing them to experiment and have demands for the chassis team also helped Honda make great progress during the 2018 season, and that's what convinced Red Bull to go with Honda in 2019.

      I remember back then people were clowning on TR's switch to honda.
      I never once doubted it. A RB with it's own engine sounded dangerous back then (and we're seeing it live rn), TR being the testing ground for Honda was a genius move.

    • @tuffmanchannel
      @tuffmanchannel Před 11 měsíci +7

      @@PaladinNL5 it makes perfect sense for Red Bull, and was a relatively low-risk decision. Honda are capable of producing something good, and Toro Rosso is a good team to test things with without compromising Red Bull's own results. Perks of owning two teams, I guess..
      It affected Toro Rosso's results, but the benefits outweighed any short term losses in points. And TR is financially safe, anyways, so it's not like underperforming for one season would jeopardize its future.

    Great video as always, goes to show how horrendous the car was if even Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button could only manage 27 points between them. It's good to see how McLaren seem to be back on the up again though, as they did super well in Austria and Silverstone, I think they've now managed to make the car competitive, and as we saw today definitely able to fight for wins in the right conditions. Plus, the Norris + Piastri driver pairing is clearly elite, Alpine lost out with Piastri.

    McLaren are still recovering from this car, despite their race win in 2021, 2022 and the start of 2023 was pretty rough on them. That being said given the day's events (2023 British GP happened on the date this uploaded) hopefully they gain a more stable footing with these new regs

      I mean, they went from Merc, to Honda, to Renault, then back to Merc in such a short time, each time making compromises. The merc engine basically didn't fit properly in thier initial designs for the 2021 car, surprised they managed to make it work as well as they did and do relatively well, but they were also making good momentum with the Renault power unit in 2020 finishing 3rd...

    • @richardm5664
      @richardm5664 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Personally I think it was the 2013 car that they have never recovered from. The 2012 car was a race winner and good but they needlessly went for a big redesign with the 2013 and it ended up being a lacklustre midfield car with zero podiums, let alone wins.

    What's crazy is that McLaren didn't send any specs of the chassis to Honda so they had to wing it with the engine size and when both teams found out the engine housing was too small for the engine, McLaren told Honda to rebuild and undersize their engine rather than rework the chassis.

    This car was hilarious at the time. They'd be fuel saving from lap 1 and hoping for the darn engine to hold up long enough to just complete.
    The first two years of the Hybrid era were hilariously unpredictable outside the podium typically being filled with 2 Merc drivers.
    I fully believe if a team showed up with an engine as bad as this today, they'd score zero points all year.

    It's also worth noting that in 2014, when McLaren had the *best power unit on the grid,* they barely managed to finish 5th in the constructors' standings and third out of the four Mercedes-powered teams, only 26 points ahead of a Force India team that had something like a quarter of McLaren's development budget.

    Ummm confused. You said at the start of the vid that the car on the second day of testing managed over 100 laps after honda parts were replaced with ones mclaren made over a year before. That’s makes nooooo sense. Mclaren was using Mercedes the year before mclaren doesn’t make engine parts etc. the Mercedes engine was a different design than the Honda as well. So how did parts made over a year before for a Mercedes powered car work easy on a totally new totally different car with a totally new totally different engine and new different engine manufacturer????? Honda probably didn’t even know a thing about the final design or setup over a year before that moment which means mclaren sure as heck didn’t know!! ! And why would mclaren who doesn’t make engines at all be making or researching engine bits or anything related to the engine in the first place???? Remember Mercedes-Benz was the best engine on the grid and they made those parts for mclaren the year before so why would mclaren waste time and money making their own version especially knowing honda was coming next year with a totally different design and setup?? I mean even the gearbox would be different to the companies. Did they rig a old V8 or Mercedes V6 mclaren to take a Honda engine or something??? Is that what you meant??? That statement makes no sense related to the Honda engine!! The first day when they only did 7 laps did non Honda or non drivetrain related parts fail big time and that’s what they replaced?? If so that’s got nothing to do with Honda. I’m just confused and what it clear thanks

    Red Bull would complain the same as Mclaren if they joined with Honda the same time as Mcl did.
    They publicly criticised Renault which helped them won multiple titles. Imagine what they would curse Honda if they used those early Honda engine (the "GP2 engine").
    They just ran out of options after divorcing with Renault so decided to go with Honda, and they lucked out Honda finally got their act together.
