I was reminded of the Nightingale Houses floors, in Kobe Japan. There were put intentionally to squeak, if a Ninja where to walk on it, in quiet of the night. They said it made the sound of a nightingale. to my tin ear, it sounded like a squeak. Bill
Nice thing about most parts of a boat is that nothing is square or at right angles. I am updating all my shop cabinets now and making everything square I find harder as I am not often required to do it.
OrcaBoats yes, that’s my point exactly! Every now and then I find myself doing archways! Lots of fun! I’ve been an avid kayaker for 20 yrs now, time to build myself a nice day touring boat! Keep up the top shelf work!
Im trying to build my own cedar canoe but something i dont understand is were to get cedar wood for 14 feet long canoe with no nuts in the wood itself ? Is there a special way to joint cedar wood for finely be able to make some peaces 14 feet long with no nuts into it ?
have these strips been through a router to make the side convex and the other concave to accommodate the radius of the frames (I've seen this done of builds) yours seem to be straight edge. Have you found that it's not necessary and no gaps are created round the tight bends??
Would a strong center strip / keel be a good idea- providing a secure center point for the body strips...? I'm going to make a canoe, and do it that way...
I suppose a denser wood down the center would make a stiffer hull. There are different planking patterns that one could use and what I am showing is just one of them. Others are herringbone or alternating between strips following the shear and then along the center line. Each has its own difficulties and challenges.
good afternoon , I enjoy your video, it was very helpful please ,could you tell me what kind of wood filler you used for small crack between your strips
I suppose that could work, but I think it would be very difficult to get the different colours of strips to meet up and the two halves would be very fragile to move around to join them up.
The cost of strips for an average canoe will run around $600 Canadian. That is 70 strips at 17 ft. I sell strips as kits. Mostly square edge strips as this make for a better tight joint, but can do have bead and cove as well
Hello Friend I'm from Brazil and I found your canoe really cool. I'm trying to make one for myself, but I'm having a hard time molding. Could you provide me the size of the molds? Thank you so much.
Not any more other than seminars I do for local clubs, societies, etc. Are you registered in a class or looking for one? They just finished a class at woodenboatschool.
You are correct. Pull saw went a little off line as I cut this portion of the center line, but it was only for a few strips and then all was fine. Just happened to be the part of fitting that I videoed.
On canoes, I usually use bead and cove, but not always. On kayaks, I may use bead and cove on the hulls but never on the decks. Bead and cove is a faster build and less likely to see light through the hull. Having said that, with a lot of care and attention, one can get a good tight joint without bead and cove by working with a block plane to carefully bevel the edges to mate.
@@OrcaboatsCa Its ok guy, with what you have, (property near a highway) it's a awesome job you're doing. And probably all by yourself, judging from your answer. So my apologies to you. Peace.
Most builders don`t think that epoxy glue is necessary as the whole hull is encased in epoxy later, but I suppose if one wanted to they could use epoxy.
Thank you.
I studied well and I go well.

Your welcome
I love the sound of that wood on wood squeak of tightly fitting pieces, especially the last one to close.

Looks like now all's you need to do is take that puppy on a SUPER COOL ADVENTURE! OHH YEAH!!!
Nice video! I’m a finish carpenter by trade& 51 yrs old. It will be nice to put down the square so to speak in a few years !

Great video.. I am going to build a cedar strip canoe. A lot of work but i am sure it is worth the effort when finished.

What makes a true craftsman: taking more time to remove that last few thousandths of an inch for a perfect fit than it took to make the whole piece.
A drink of whiskey to you, great boat
Great video, thank you !! I have always loved cedar stripped canoes !!
Just discovered your channel - this is a great resource! I wish I had these videos when I build my first canoe! I'm subscribing! Thanks!
Marvellous skill and job!!!

Nice and clean.

Well done!
Buenas té saludo desde mi bella Colombia y quería saber si puedes decime o vender croquis de qué forma fabricar la canoa gracias
You can buy plans and books on building canoes. Try Bear Mountain Boats in Canada
Very well the idea everything very simple. regards
good afternoon , I enjoy your video, it was very helpful please ,could you tell me what kind of wood filler you used for small crack between your strips
On larger gaps, I use epoxy mixed with sawdust. On very small and in the final sand before epoxy, you can use a simple water based wood filler.
Could u have made it in two halves some how then cut a straight line down the middle and then join the sides together?
I suppose that could work, but I think it would be very difficult to get the different colours of strips to meet up and the two halves would be very fragile to move around to join them up.
Do you have an idea of what it would cost for the wood alone? Just the cedar strips, not the plywood. Do you know where I could buy pre cut strips?

Amazing video! Very helpful. Question: what kind of block plane are you using in the video? I'm shopping around :) thank you!
Veritas low angle block plane from Lee Valley tools.
Just like my scale kits! Love wood!
Did you use just a regular wood glue to fasten put the planks together?
Yes. Regular wood glue as the entire structure is encased in fiberglass and resin so no glue should see any water.
Thank you!!
Nice boat
Amigo saludos desde Guadalajara es un buen trabajo y es mucha paciencia felicidades

Buenas ideas si señor!
Hello Friend
I'm from Brazil and I found your canoe really cool.
I'm trying to make one for myself, but I'm having a hard time molding. Could you provide me the size of the molds?
Thank you so much.
You have to purchase plans to get the mold patterns.
No screws
No screws, tacks or staples.
Where can i found it
Great job Sir! I will soon take a class, do you teach this art?
Greetings from Texas.
Humberto

Whats the thickness of these strips? They look very think and thus easy to bend... Thanks
The strips are the standard 1/4" thickness.
Какое дерево можно использовать для подобных построек каное и каяков ?
What kind of tree can be used for similar canoe and kayak buildings?
Excelente donde se consiguen los planos ?
.eherovoce
Did you use Elmer's wood glue for this?
Regular wood glue, not waterproof
Bom trabalh mais quando ele calocar dentro d'água que a madeira vai inxar bastante aí dá problema à não ser que a madeira não almente com a água
Luar biasa👍👍👍👍..rapi,teliti, saya suka cara kerja anda sempurna.
Beautiful...
That was great.
Why didn't the strip ends match? Was your centerline miss cut ?
You are correct. Pull saw went a little off line as I cut this portion of the center line, but it was only for a few strips and then all was fine. Just happened to be the part of fitting that I videoed.
Been there done that ! Nice videos !
Onde eu consigo se gabarito?
LOL I tried to blow the sawdust off right before you did
Very good
Help to get the drawings of the frames of this boat?
Belo trabalho meu amigo parabéns !
That was very interesting! :-)
what kind of glue did u use? is it waterproof?
regular wood glue
would it not dissolve over time?
With the whole boat encased in fiberglass and resin, if the glue gets wet, you have much bigger issues.
ahhh yes. thanks fiberglass coating everywhere. sorry i forgot about that.
Parabéns um excelente trabalho

lindo trabalho
А чертежи есть ? Покажите ? Спасибо .
По всей видимости нету.😊
The best!

I know right! Good film and production staff and editing people are so hard to find these days. And for all the money and time I put into this.

Sad, but true. Educational videos are never exciting but you might learn something.
5:12 et voila....
wrong glue, should be epoxy
Most builders don`t think that epoxy glue is necessary as the whole hull is encased in epoxy later, but I suppose if one wanted to they could use epoxy.
Titebond 3 or equivalent is good. Plus, see comment about adding epoxy later.
Waste of time
