is it necessary to screw the gunwale?
    Can I just paste?

You can glue gunwales on with epoxy, but you still may need some screws to hold it in place while epoxy sets up. Otherwise it is difficult to keep the gunwales from sliding around with epoxy.

What type of cedar are you using ?

The gunwales are not cedar. They are white ash. The planking on the hull is mostly western red cedar.
