Halo Wars 2's iconic art style has improved

- Halo Wars 2 brought us back to that beautiful, beloved, iconicclassic Halo art style, with a light blend of the modern art style, and everyone loved it.
However, since its release, a load of new leaders, with new units, have been added to the game, so today I thought we'd take a look at these units, and see if they uphold the strength of the game's art style, or if they ruin it...
spoilers - it's definitely, d e f i n i t e l y not the latter :^)
Next time, we're going back to the main focus of this channel as of late - the good ol' Flood :)

ICONIC IS BACK IN STYLE ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
HiddenXperia - The home of Halo 5 lore videos! Hey so is sgt. Johnson alive cannon wise or is that just for the game
Jomonkey27 Hayden, unfortunately it's not canon, RipSgtJohnson

HiddenXperia - The home of Halo 5 lore videos! ( ͡°╭͜ʖ╮͡° )
nice Deep mind reference
It makes sense that Johnson would wear an original Spartan suit seeing how he's a Spartan 1.
We need to slap whoever passed the opportunity to name Jerome's Command Mantis the ComMandtis.
Came to mind immediately
@@RYzE_B3Y0ND yep
a warthog without its original I C O N I C suspensions,
will never be a warthog
I just recently played Halo 2 Anniversary and decided to look where the suspensions are. They're still there in addition to springs.

I like the blended art style, good mix of the old and new to please the majority of the fans, while still looking good.
Agent Venom ikr
it's a mix for sure but not necessarily a good one imo, i still dislike the overdone glossy forerunner style, but again just my opinion innit
The forerunners have always been glossy and metallic.
ur mom gay
+Carolus Yeah, the forerunner style is still ugly, but they nailed the banished and most of the UNSC.
I like the new, shiny Forerunner design (when I first walked through that tunnel in Halo 4 after landing on Requiem, I was DUMBFOUNDED), but I think that should be used ONLY for inhabited or ultra important installations (like Requiem and Genesis) and then, be rarely encountered. I wanna see the more mute, desolate, futuristic designs the original trilogy had for that Halo installation in Halo 6!
Would you say you were blinded by its majesty? Paralyzed? Dumbstruck?
iconic vid m8
father?
I love the art style, hope it transitions smoothly while also bringing some of the story to Halo 6. #ICONIC
im sure that being a big fan he'd realise that Sargent Johnson's mech in this was the first iteration of the mjolnir Armour system designed to be used along side the Orion project survivors who Johnson is apart of
They should've given Johnson a suped up, unique scorpion tank as a nod towards halo 2
While I agree, they already have that. It's called a Grizzly.
9:14
Elite commander: men manned your battle stations.... Winter has come
Elite Soldier: Not this shit again...
The original halo had a very industrial design which I think is greatly missed
Legend says, if your comment mentions the words *ICONIC* or *FLOOD* HiddenXperia will notice and be summoned to the mortal realm.
Hi experia keep making the most awesome videos and being awesome
(:
How does the mech not fit Johnson's character? He is literally in Project ORION, aka Spartan-I. He would've worn that suit in canon
Cause we aren't used to it. Lore wise it is correct, I think it fits fine. But when you see him he is in marine gear, his Spartan-I history is a bit clouded, not a lot of people know about it.
In lore canon sure but not in game canon.
He was in Orion, but that's not the suit he'd have worn. The suit is the same thing from Legends: Prototype, just modified with a different loadout.
Spartan-I didn't have power armour.
It was scrapped because it costs tons of money and all they got out of it were slightly better marines.
Definition of iconic
1
: of, relating to, or having the characteristics of an icon
2
a : widely recognized and well-established an iconic brand name
b : widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence an iconic writer a region's iconic wines
HiddenXperia Definition of iconic. It new i love it hey its ICONIC XD
Sierra 0138 It does fit into 2B, the design looks like it was basically straight from a previous halo game.
Sierra 0138 thank u for definition
Jerome's Command Mantis ... I guess you could say he has a COMMANTIS! xD
...
...
I'll let myself out.
Whenever I watch your vids Xperia, I get an *ICONIGASM*
"Im getting you out of here"
"No, youre not...dont let her go...dont you EVER let her go..Send me out...with a bang"
I really like how halo wars 2 approached the art style but I still have a couple gripes:
1. I've never been much of a mech fan, especially not in Halo.
2. They still have the new forerunner style which I have always despised.
Otherwise, I hope 343 act on the positive reception.
Would really love to see a few cryo weapons in the main Halo games. Sub-Zero temperatures would be a great defense in driving back the Flood too.
I realized when I was done with the video that I had already liked it before even seeing it, that's how much I trust you to make good videos. Very nicely done, earning that :)
I C O N I C
The colossus reminds me of starcraft 2's warhouns, that's pretty freaking cool
The commantis
I could listen to Luc talk about artstyle for days. Great video 👍
I lobe the exaggeration in your videos, man. Cracks me up. Excellent content
dude your not the only one too! I even thought the 3d design team had some sort of inspiration from metal gear as well! Also just by looking at the feet too!!
Please so more longer videos! I really love to watch long halo videos
I'd like to see some of these vehicles clad in the UNSC olive drab color. The mechs don't interest me much tho as they're a bit too pointy and overdesigned
Yeah I didn't agree with that part of the vid, in fact the way he was comparing them to Metal Gear mechs is exactly why I don't like them. They look like they belong in a 90's anime.
The only one I like is Jerome's Mantis, but I think overall mechs in Halo should look more similar to MechWarrior or the Power Loader from Aliens.
Person. You've also spammed many comments about how you don't like it, proving that you're nothing but an unhappy troll.
I saw Iconic in the title...
I love your videos man I've missed the Halo universe deeply and you're giving me hope that some of those old themes will come back.
iconic
It fits Johnson perfectly, you know with him being the exact type of person that those suits were designed for, a spartan one
Dude, you have made the word iconic, iconic in and of itself.
Sweetly ICONIC
The frost raven is basically the falcon from reach with extra propellers in the back
A cool thing about the Hunter Captain is it’s cannon. When it shoots the three “prongs” open. So can it double as a grabber to grab enemies and throw them? That would be awesome to see!
I like how this video was almost a review of all the leaders
the phantom looks more like a banished turtle
7:11 omega team’s helmets look like an awesome mix between a classic Mk 6 cap and visor with a Mk 4 chin
5:45 The armor is kinda fitting for Johnson as he is a Spartan 1. He's just wearing something fancy
I went to my friend's house, once. We played halo wars 2, and I told him to buy the colony dlc. Surprisingly, my friend didn't know that colony had the ability to talk. And also, he was also surprised about the units.
Honestly, none of the mechs, save the mantis, look like classic Halo *at all* to me.
i agree. The mantis could have been in Halo 3 or Reach and fit very well.
Mechs weren't in classic halo, so of course when they are added in in later games they won't look like classic halo.
Honestly they should make a halo reach character like emile or noble 6 and use the falcons it kinda pissed me off when i found out the nightingale looked just like falcons but couldn't shoot
"I C O N I C"
House Xperia and their words are ICONIC
I didn't expect sgt.johnson to have spartan 1 armor
The goliath's got some nice jiggle physics
I do think Isabel and Serina contributed to the reason the units are a bit of a mix. It is stated that the Mantis manufactured on the Spirit of Fire lack neural interface control systems that the newer models have. So its a hybridization of new tech mixed older manufacturing facilities and compensating for which parts they cant produce and Isabel, being a logistics AI, has a database full of blueprints to adapt to Spirit's systems.
I really enjoyed U reviewing these HW2 units :)
Fun fact the different factions veichles follow a theme
Covenant follows spirits like ghost phantom and banshee
Unsc follows animals with things like the warthog mongoose and mantis falcon etc
I hope Halo infinite uses the banished and flood as a big focus due to how HW2 made them feel like a true threat and I hope the shot of Chief’s new armor is a sign that we are getting the HW2 blended art style
Extra points for including ReviewBrah!
It's nice to see that they have given Johnson a project Orion armor.
I can't be the only one who thinks the Banished Phantom looks like an ADVENT vehicle in Xcom 2.
Jhonson's armor being based off of the exo project which is a precursor to mjolnir just as the seargeant himself is a precursor to Spartan II's
0:23 I see you with that Mgs 1 encounter theme
I really hope they keep the Halo Wars 2 art and design team for Halo 6. They brought the perfect blend of old and new in HW2.
So, between Halo 1 and 2 we went from the Spirit to the phantom, a complete troop transport change. There's no reason they couldn't just change the name of the Banished Troop transport and then completely redesign it to fit the Banished artstyle and functionality.
343 needs to chill with all these mechs
What if when the flood came back, 343 ruined their art style? What would you do?
-Aesthetic- *ICONIC*
I C O N I C E D I N M Y P A N T S
Johnson is a spartan 1 and those were the spartan 1 suits so it does work
I fully agree with your assessment there, except for Serena's Frostraven. I actually think it fits the art style very well. To me it just looks like a modified Falcon from Halo Reach, but modified to the point where it can carry all that weight.
But I think they should probably ease up on all the mechs for the human hero characters. We've never really had so many kinds of mechs all of a sudden in a Halo game before. I've never really been a huge mech fan, but when it looks practical I don't mind.
To me this just seems like an over-abundance.
I reckon they should have given these hero characters a more diverse array of human vehicles--like a specialised pelican, or a hornet, tank, warthog.
And I don't know how I feel about Johnson getting his own mech. I'm so torn on that one.
5:18
That looks like something that should be in a anime
And next we shall get Yapyap THE DESTROYER with his THRONE OF WOE and Grunt GOBLINS!
It bothers me that the Spartans in halo wars have shields but the mjolnir mark IV actually didn't have shields
What I really like in the halo franchise is the grizzly tanks
Honestly, that Phantom looks more like the Banished took a Phaeton and added more metal bits to it. It kinda has that Forunner feel to it.
Love the reveiwbrah cameo!
It'd be silly to add all the extended covenant units to a Halo FPS Campaign.... but what about adding them to Firefight?
Zak Ras or tha gamemode thats has the bases n u can kill the didact
triigga s That gamemode got old fast maybe if one team played as the covenant it would be good
the power suit Johnson's has is almost exactly like the one from the halo movie . I think that part was called "be human" ? cant remember vary well.
HW2 still has shitty Forerunner style... floaty Tron bits and super shiny just doesn't fit the Forerunners.
ENRAGEDAustin11 random spinning circular pieces, pristine ancient sites that nobody has been too in hundreds of thousands of years, the colors blue and orange, and last but not least... disintegration which is also a poor excuse to not have body's laying around the mad.
Retro Benz I don't mind clean since to a degree it makes sense with the various bots flying around tending to the facilities, but the new forunner structures only should be for interiors and the old classic forunner ones be the bulk of what we see especially outside, the new style made zero sense for the ark as itwas never shown to be in the halo rings or the ark itself from the original games
chris pearson please understand that the forerunner structures that appear in halo 3 are old and not clean, now with cortana coming she obviously could have redesigned the structures and the look, now the new artstyle structures could be present on the ark and other halos but locked away for the sake of misusing forerunner tech! Try to understand please!
Yeah, that sucks :(
HiddenXperia - The home of Halo 5 lore videos! There will come a time when we could have forerunner tech!
Halo 3 had the best art style, nuff said ✋
Still waiting for a remastered version of Halo 3 .
Tamás Pákey *remake
Johnsons armor and the mechs look like the Tau especially with that color scheme.
The flamethrowers on Kinsanos mech are the ones in halo 3 :)
The hunter captain is beautiful
Yo, you forgot that the mech at 5:00 was also present on that one Halo 4 map, Adrift. Although it definitely seems to have changed a bit.
Just hurry up and patent I C O N I C already!
soonTM
I personally prefer the original Halo Wars style. I love its painting ascetic.
Johnson's unique units should of been marine based. Scout units with stealth capability. Shotgun and knife wielding close combat units. The ability to douse enemies in flamer fuel and light it with a cigar stub
For the leader colony the Goliath is two normal hunter combined into one super hunter
Sidenote: Locusts and Scarabs are also lekgolo
I hope I not the only one who hopes to see halo wars vehicles enter the fps halos, at least certain ones, imagine this tho halo but with the battlefield style, not to large maps, vehicles and capture points, hell it'd be interesting if even your playable character would be a marine instead of a Spartan
I'm a bit sad that mantises are bigger than the Cyclops, I thought the halo wars 2 Cyclops were massive but obviously not lol
Arbiter is definitely my new main leader, but I'll definitely be using Yap Yap the Destroyer in the multiplayer!
The frost raven looks a bit like the falcon just noticed
How do you think freeze/ice units and weapons would do in a battle with the flood? We've seen loads of fire based weapons and units for the flood, but not ice ones.
Anyone think they missed a huge opportunity to call it the "Commantis" instead of "Command Mantis"?
The phantom looks like a forerunner veichle
The collosus looks like a Armored Core.
Next time: *F L O O D*
The Colossus- I mean the GUNDAM is amazing IMO.
Well that's it my Haloitis has come back time to administer a cure of playing thru all halo games back to back
I love the beautiful sounding iconic looking unsc weapons in the original trilogy and halo wars 1 and 2
from my point of view there has been little experience with frost powers at least in halo wars 1 and also the cryo units look red alert 3 and uprising, cryo troopers inspired ,wich gives them the extra credibility for a unit that is cold/frost based.
I dunno, maybe it's just me but I don't think mechs of any kind "fit" in Halo's artstyle. They're just weird, too sci-fi, imo. Like, they seem too impractical for a military organization to make a bunch of, rather than a 4+ wheeled vehicle. You know how easy it'd be to knock a mantis down? Then what? You're just screwed at that point.
I dunno, man. They've always seemed impractical and dumb to me.
Exactly my opinion! When they first announced the mantis in halo 4, i was a little bit shocked....Its just to much!
Person. They "do" but they still are out there on the line for halo, where you start leaving the sci-fi military shooter and more into fantasy sci-fi robot wars like gundam
Brady Fleming its a futuristic game
Grim Looters, two things:
One is that you can't remove the weaknesses of mechs (that being you could sweep their feet right out from under them, since they're just a heavy balancing act), regardless of how futuristic you are.
Two would be that if you can't fit a gungoose, warthog, or even a scorpion somewhere, you're proooobably not gonna fit a mantis there. And if you're talking about just uncrossable terrain, then not only would that be a danger for the mantis (see reason 2), but I guarantee that a large wheeled vehicle could pass (like Jerome's big APC that I forgot the name of). Even if it couldn't you could carry things across with pelican transports, too.
I can't think of a single reason that a human military organization would build a bipedal mech. 500 years in the future, or not.
Edit: I was misinformed about our current technological capabilities as far as gravity is concerned.
MECs are dumb and I was disappointed when I saw it in Halo... Why have a scorpion if there MECs? I agree with OP I never understood how a MEC makes any kind of sense, doesn't fit the UNSC that I think of with their closer to modern day than future tech.. MECs only exist to please people who think they look cool.
