It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know, man, but it keeps me up at night.
I tought I was the only one that found the Halo CE maps pretty creepy, I remember back in the early 2000s when I was just a child playing those maps alone to explore them and to test the guns, and I always felt that unnerving and creepy sensation of being in an ancient abandoned place, sometimes feeling observed by someone or something hidden around, and just to think when those places where built, by who or for what purpose they were built always scared tf out of me.
Saaaaaame dude, same. The Forerunner maps in particular felt so mysterious and beyond my comprehension. There's something really creepy about a structure so vast and technologically superior that's also abandoned. Makes you wonder why its creators abandoned it
@@HiddenXperia What do you think about Halo 3's Sandbox map, the sequel to Sandtrap? It's so moody.
I completely relate to this Halo CE was and forever will be amazing and impossible to replicate
Dude...even after all of these years...I feel the same. The atmosphere of Halo CE was basically being an unstoppable soldier, but at the same time...you were fucking scared shitless due to the layout, ambiance and lore of the whole place. Literally a long forgotten Installation...completely empty, without any trace of inhabitants. Even when I was kicking ass throughout the campaign I felt an itch at the back of my head, that something was watching me. Some of the areas back in the day just straight up scared me and made me feel terrified and uncomfortable, mainly the underground areas...that's why Halo CE will always be something special.
I remember on the map ‘hang em high’ you could sometimes hear what I always assumed was howling. Wind doesn’t make sudden changes in pitch like that.
The ambience of CE always gave me the creeps

I love the creepy, mysterious ambiance of Halo: CE - both in the campaign and multiplayer. None of the other Halo games have been able to recapture that unnerving feeling of the superunknown that we got in the first game. I really hope Halo Infinite tries to capitalize on that.
My favorite map, even with others from Halo on PC included: Sidewinder. Such good memories playing it with friends when I was younger, and I love big, open maps.
Braz Mann sorry to say it but, 343 does not know how to make halo games. They’re probably going to mess up infinite.
@@CoyoteRecon you can't just assume things like this wait for the release
KirbyPeter both their chances to redeem themselves failed, thus why I used the word “probably”
Jay not entirely.. effects like the howling winds which almost sounded like whispers, the fog and minimal lighting are effects that were missing from the other games. You can always add in more mystique and unknowns to explore later story-wise, which is what I’m hoping will happen in Halo Infinite. *cough* Precursors *cough*
Coyote Recon based on history, yeah, but I’m still giving them a chance. They’re going in the right direction creatively, which is a nice change, instead of just gameplay. Halo 5s writer was awful too and they got rid of him.

That lonesome feeling when you explore ce maps alone is unforgettable
Playing the online maps by myself, from any Halo game, I feel like I'm being watched. So macabre. Sandtrap gives me chills, especially when the mines explode randomly.

You saying the maps have an ancient and nostalgic feeling is exactly how i feel. I told my friends i love how creepy and unnerving Halos lore is and i wasn't able to put it into words at all. There is just an underlying mystery feeling that you're always being watched, or you're someplace you shouldn't be.

The sound ambiance on some of these multiplayer maps gives this subtle haunting spirits from them when playing it alone, especially when playing this as a kid.
Halo: Combat Evolved's atmosphere is perfect. The covenant radio sounds, the windy white noise, and much more.
I’ve always imagined Battle Creek as two Cryptums. It would be cool if these were the original designs for a cryptum.
Ooooooooh I like that idea! Now you've said that they actually really remind me of Forerunner versions of the Barrows Brothers crypts from Runescape lol
This hit home, especially with Blood Gulch. Too bad he's gone...
The best thing about halo CE was the background ambience it had in maps that no halo game has.
This is the only place I can travel to now that Corona's kept me indoors
At first I read "Corona" or "Cortana" 😂

Actually, I did the same too. You know, pretty engrossed in HALO lore.
My personal favorite Halo: CE Map based on lore and also of course Red vs Blue is Blood Gulch. I’ve also had some pretty fun games of multiplayer on that map so it’s an added bonus.
You know, that entire description of Blood Gulch fits the entire first five seasons of Red vs Blue, from the most important question of them all, to the storyteller left behind . . .
Prisoner is my favorite map for lore reasons. I love the breakout variant in Reach as well. Imagine what it must have taken to bust out! The Flood? A Precursor?

I hope they add the aura of mysteriousness back to the maps for infinate.
Also a food for thought question for everyone, do you think the reason the maps arnt mysterious anymore is because the graphics have gotten too good, like most old games with low res textures intrinsically have mystery yet when every blade of grass is 1080p it is harder to pull off.
Same, honestly the whole mysterious vibe has been missing since CE imo. Graphics are definitely part of it, art style too. CE had such a unique art style, even compared to the rest of the original trilogy that added to the mysterious and eerie vibe so well
@@HiddenXperia That's why I always play CE in classic mode baybee
I do believe the older graphics add a certain creepy affect to the game especial with the marines recorded video on his helmet with pixelated fuzzy video and people yelling and shooting but I think with better graphics more detail can be shown and it's up to the developers to go back to that mysterious creepiness that CE had If Infinite has the palace of pain in it I would hope so
Halo 4 had some mysterious maps
It's the perfect game to do it! We're trapped on a brand new Halo ring with a dark background....human slaves, torture, experimentation
It's been a while since you did a video on the maps.
_this is very spoopy_
This video reminds me of why I got into CE when I first played it.
I remember playing with my cousins on their Xboxes when it first came out. But then the PC version came out, and I got to play by myself...
My favorite memories of solo playing focus on just how eerie and creepy the whole thing was, but also feeling a sense of epic adventure to it all. The main menu, with its fly-around camera centered on the ring-world, the Gregorian style chanting... then booting the campaign on heroic and blowing through the whole thing in the dark, alone, on my parents' computer.
I distinctly remember thinking "Keyes doesn't keep his gun loaded? The balls on that man..." in the first mission, being really engrossed in Assault on the Control Room, having a hard time with, but still LOVING the Library (after being freaked out with the whole mission 343 Guilty Spark), and being so devastated when FoeHammer went down in the final mission...
The whole creep factor, the mystery, the music, the ambiance, and the grandeur of the whole game STILL gives me goosebumps, 20 years later. And I can't tell you how many times I played this game as a kid... Don't even get me started on Halo 3, though. I'll go forever about Halo 3... (skipped Halo 2 in this because, admittedly, I didn't play it very much until right before Halo 3 came out).
CE was always enshrouded in mystery and it left me unsettled but still very nostalgic.
To me Halo CE always seemed like a bridge between the earlier style of FPS games and the newer style of games. That’s also why I think so many weapons are ridiculously powerful.
My favorite HCE map, gameplay and lore wise, is Chill Out.
In almost every game with forge mode, I've remade this map because I love it so much.
In Reach, the level was partially submerged in the water, with that one glitch that lets you do that (in place of the fog effects). Assuming the map was some kind of oversized covenant freezer, I liked to think the place shut down and just melted everywhere. Colors fading away and everything, creating a damp, colorless facility.
In Halo 4 it was the same thing, minus the water, a bit run down, and taken over by the UNSC as a temporary base. More cover, more human weapons.
In H2A, it was the same thing again but ruined and broken down, with a few missing rooms and new pathways.
Finally, in Halo 5, the teleporters were shut down (removed with spark effects in their places), as the level was further broken down with pipes falling out of the walls, creating clamber and spring-jump spots for Halo 5's improved gameplay.
Assuming Infinite has good forge, I'll probably add to this even more. I like to think I've created my own little timeline for my favorite map here.
Did you just say "Halo 5s improved gameplay?"
You ruined all credibility with that sentence.
This is a deep and thoughtful exposition of all the Halo CE maps. I really love the mysterious and elusive element which the first 2 Halo games endowed to their forerunner maps. Thanks for this refreshing and well thought video 😊
Boarding action is still one of the most creative halo maps to this day.
I remember walking through these maps alone and I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that the maps had, like someone or something was watching me and I wasn't alone.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to immediately watch this, due to the fact I was Ripping and Tearing my way through Doom Eternal. But now I'm here
I actually, physically choked when he said "do you ever wonder why we're here?"
Even now, playing the Halo CE maps completely alone is scary, the complete silence and loneliness in these maps is something I haven't experienced nowhere else
That was amazing, you trully captured the same feelings i used to have years ago while exploring these maps alone, the eerie ambient noises, the unusual shapes of the many claustrophobic rooms, the everlasting feeling of mystery across these abandoned structures, great video! Maybe you could do the same with halo 2 maps, that would be great!
I know I'm gonna love this one
Your taste in maps is clearly impeccable so I think you will 🤗
The ambient sounds of these levels, and the campaign levels are actually quite fucking haunting… the sighs and breaths that ebb and flow through ancient corridors always creeped me out as a kid…
"You ever wonder why we're here?" I smiled and internally fanboyed
Damnation's always been a cool map to me. Covenant logistical structures and facilities are
fascinating in their design and scale. Covenant
aesthetics are my favorite from Halo, with
Forerunner aesthetics being a close second.
HiddenXperia I honestly expected better from you with your title, there wasn’t any lore in the vid at all. It was you mainly just describing each map. Listen, this video was great but the title really should have been “A dive into the subtle storytelling and ambience of Halo CE maps!” This title was just outright clickbait and deception. It made me think this video was going to explain what each map was and the stories behind each place. I know you’re a good guy and work hard to make each of these videos and I appreciate your hard work. You’re a flipping amazing writer your scripts give me chills and make me feel like I’m where you are describing. But this ain’t it Chief.

Personaly Hang Em' High is my favourite map just due to creepy noises and pale grey coloring really makes you feel that our minds can't comprehend the forerunners and their logic and reasoning as to what the purpose of their creations are.
Same here. Those ambient noises are straight from a nightmare. With groups of friends, it's a blast, but exploring by yourself, it's just creepy.
Excellent video, and I'm glad you feel the same way about 'em. I really want to capture that feeling you described from the late 90s early 2000s arena FPS maps and put it into words, but I just can't either.
Monumental? Ancient?
Sometimes, when you can't put something to words, try imagining a situation that makes you feel the same way and just say that. Boom you have yourself a kind of metaphor.
People here have said, for example, "it makes me feel like I'm being watched".
so wheres the lore? Title says "The Creepy Lore behind ALL the Halo: Combat Evolved maps" but then proceeds to talk about zero lore and just very generally speculates on the maps...
kyle I love HiddenXperia but I was thinking the exact same thing, everything in here could be seen already. It honestly looks like it was a “Ive run out of ideas” type of video. It is hard to come up with a video every week though so I kinda understand. Halo Infinite just can’t come fast enough.
"This is a map that is layed out in a way that suggests something"
CPOMendez117 Exactly. “Suggest” “maybe” “could be” “possibly” “we don’t know exactly what this could have been”
I think the video fit well with the style of environmental storytelling Bungie gave us in CE. This was back when we knew almost nothing of the Halo universe and alot of what we saw and heard was left to speculation. I however can understand your complaints.
The real Brute 3 Honestly I would have been fine if the video was titled “The atmosphere and subtle storytelling of the Halo CE Multiplayer Maps!” But this was straight up clickbait and deceptive. But I do agree with you that this video was good it’s just not what it should have been based upon the title.
Half the comment section: red vs blue references.
The other half: *random shit galore*
I always found every halo multiplayer map creepy, idk why. Every map is just... eerie. And as a forge person, it’s especially creepy to build in these silent wastelands
The fact that you gave out a shout out to Marty is insane, that guy's my inspiration for music and agh that just sounds beyond amazing hahah

"Lore." I can't bother to continue watching if all you've written are mildly-detailed assumptions based on the immediately obvious. I really wouldn't mind watching the video - hell, it would be really cool if you theorized deeply about the purposes of the structures in these maps - but I came here for real LORE. At least, that's what I expected cos of the title.
Yeah I had that same feeling too, hopefully one day we can get real lore and facts about the maps :(
That was a clickbait title though
Yeah, I would’ve been satisfied with at least a theory based on clues hinting at its purpose. Considering his knowledge on Halo Lore that feat would’ve been trivial! This just felt amateurish.

Nothing comes close to Halo CE's dark, enigmatic, isolated atmosphere. The brutalist and yet cathedral-like forerunner architecture, extremely ancient and sci-fi/futuristic at the same time. And the sounds. Even the elevators sound fucking incredible.

Great work. You really captured the sense of mystery and vague unease that these maps evoked. Like you are in some corner of space lightyears away from any other living organism. Somehow these maps made you feel terrifyingly alone, yet simultaneously like you're being watched. It felt like i was back in the early 2000s reading the manual that came with the game.
Honestly, if the Halo rings were free of the Flood and war, they'd be really chill places to relax and meditate on.
To do that you'd have to send the flood into the surface of a sun
I clicked for “lore”. How is this lore? Just a fan boy description. “Purpose unknown, purpose unknown BUT it’s a cweepy map”

i appreciate the observations on these maps but your definition of 'lore' is a bit off. the title and intro are pretty misleading, the only genuine lore you've provided here are the names of a few ships/locations, most of which can be found in the map descriptions. hate to be a prick but this was a pretty disappointing video
To be fair his descriptions are definitely more detailed than the actual map descriptions in Halo 1.
I have a strong sense of nostalgia for sidewinder because me and my cousin had an original X box and we would always play sidewinder together, doing stuff like trying to snipe one another, or crashing the warthogs into each other
I love this kind of content. All my friends just wanted to blow each other up when we were kids and I just wanted to chill in the haunting maps and take in the ambient noises and aesthetics haha. Very very well done
This video really takes me back--I used to hang out on the Halo 3 maps by myself just to explore. I was new to the franchise and I was really enthralled by the different places and sounds.
I also love the way hidden Xperia explains the mystery of the maps in the tone of feeling mysterious and how he shows us the maps
thanks friendo, I put a lot of work into the descriptions to make them sound like they were written by an early 00s Bungie, great to hear it paid off :D
Glad to hear it
I am so glad other people understand the feeling of ambience, extreme mystery, and the unknowable feelings behind the Combat Evolved Maps. Mine would have to be Derelict: "Deep Space Anomaly #0198." But we can all agree, Combat Evolved had a beauty like no other.
Empty Multiplayer maps are already unnerving. CE took that, and turned it to 11. The result? The strangest experience in multiplayer gaming.
The general ambience of the old games gave you this level of immersion that was akin to playing a frantic battle while never really feeling calm or relaxed, the tremors and almost like voices howling made you look over your shoulder like something beyond your opponents was watching you. Halo Combat Evolved used simplicity to maximize the immersion. Silence, other than the noises heard. In all the levels on Halo you can hear noises of creatures and the other inhabitants that are never seen. It truly makes you more at odds with your sanity. As of late? There's really too much going on in backgrounds, so much noise. It was like in Doom 2 on missions in Hell with some more quiet soundtracks that you could hear the gurgling of blood, the moaning of demons half-dead and mutilated on the floor, wishing to die than feel pain. When demons in all the modern Dooms just vanish in blood-mist, it's not as gritty as imps or hell knights trying to reclaim their organs or crawl in pain with severed limbs. This is why, altogether, simplicity is better. When Halo: Combat Evolved's enemies are slain, there is just the ambience. Even though you've won, you can't seem to calm down.
Amazing! Really fantastic I mean I've played all the halo ce maps and never thought they where that forboarding, fun fact: that ambiance sound you like at end was originally in oni one of the earlier bungie games, it was used for terminals in that game
Amazing video as as always man
