The Hot Water Pipeline Was Fixed But The next Eruption is Just Around The Corner

- The next volcanic eruption could be as little as 3 weeks away according to Icelandic geologists but we need more information about the magma inflow for maximum accuracy. The housing shortage is hitting us worse than ever because the former residence of Grindavík are now flocking into an already overheated real estate market. And I will be needing fresh b-roll soon for my updates so I'm waiting for good wether, and for the Blue Lagoon road to open again.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
You have a way of injecting a self-denigrating Icelandic sense of humour into your videos, but also for expressing great compassion for the displaced residents of Grindavik. It sure is a difficult and uneasy time! Thank you for your video and perspectives, always, Gylfi.
I totally agree!
Much appreciated with greetings from Iceland :)
I firmly believe that the Icelandic education system offers Phd level classes in self depreciation, cynicism, and irony. And they obviously put irony supplements in their public water system.
@@GoCoyote Priceless! Well said. 🤩
@@GoCoyoteit's a global thing
Iceland fixes a road destroyed by freaking LAVA within two weeks, while my city can’t even fill potholes.
And a water pipeline along with electric pipes, in addition to the road.
Ffs, rest of the world needs to take notes on how to bandaid our public infrastructure.
Having visited Iceland I can attest that they can build damn near any type of infrastructure in unbelievably bad conditions in record time. Meanwhile it takes us years to fix a bridge…..not build a new one but fix an old one.
Think we may live in same country
South Africa? 😅
The village in Southern Bavaria, where I ve been living for 20+ years can't either. And they are talking about a new traffic circle (hope this is the correct term) as long as I'm living there. Results: NONE!
But they are proud to be a "Spa"....🤦♀️
Thanks for the update Gylfi. The workmen have done a really good job in laying new water pipes to replace those that were destroyed by the lava.
Yes lucky us, those were cold days and nights
I would dare to say that the "ostrich behaviour" is global!...
❤❤❤/gbg
Especially where climate change is concerned. I know there's worry in Iceland about disappearing icecaps affecting future water supplies, and also as the glaciers thin out we could get more eruptions from the subglacial volcanoes as the 'cork' holding the magma's compressed gases in place becomes lighter and lighter, reducing the pressure and causing the compressed gases to come out of solution and explode. I don't like the implications of that for Bardabunga and Katla for instance.
Thank you for your insightful commentary and your commitment to documenting these huge changes - both tectonic and social.
Thank you very much, appreciated!
Looks like Icelanders and Australians have a lot in common. We have a "She'll be right" attitude as well.
That's actually fun to know :)
Italians have the opposite attitude. We go "It will go bad anyhow, so why fret making preparations anyhow?" --> Specialised in fixing (poorly) things.
That seems to be the Australian attitude to the climate crisis.
@@alicetwainI found the Russian pessimism quite reassuring, it doesn’t lead to disappointment.
I have lived more than 2 years in Australia and one year in Iceland. I have a look from the outside and I find Aussies and Icelanders on total opposite of the spectrum. In fact that attitude maybe the only thing in common but its more - "what will be, will be" than "she'l be right"... Anyway cheers to both sides of the world that I used to call my home... Greetings from Canada and stay strong Grindavik, Keflavik and all the Icelanders!
Icelanders are amazingly resilient folk. Thank you for the update
Same. They are resilient and resourceful .
Thank you for all your reporting!❤
Thanks for watching!
Great update, thank you. I also thought of houses being shipped over. So the lava is cool enough to construct a road over it?! Wow. The residents are very lucky to receive money for their homes, we don't have that reimbursement for natural disasters. It'll be a long road for everyone to get settled. My heart goes out to everyone there. Take care and be safe.
Loved the fact that you're managing to inject some of your dry sense of humor again. Love you for that. And thanks for the update. The ability of the Icelandic people to make major repairs so quickly is amazing. I continue to be concerned about everyone in Iceland.
Thank you for the update. It was human error that had the pipelines destroyed, but my compliments go to the people who worked day and night to provide a solution 👍. One can only hope some of that spirit flows into the authorities. More eruptions will come indeed. The land is rising again and faster than before, but it may slow down of course. Dit you read the article online in Science "Fracturing and tectonic stress drives ultrarapid magma flow into dikes" about the November intrusion and the December eruption? Very interesting.
You are a far better journalist than any of the news media. Thank you!
Thx for your steady, thrustworthy reports. Take care!
Thank you too!
I'm so impressed with the speed of replacing the road. You would still be waiting several years if that happened in the uk! Keep safe Gylfi.
Thanks for the update. I love the "ostriches". Unfortunately this is a condition that affects governments worldwide.
Australian for "it'll just be fine" is "She'll be right!"
Thanks for sharing, I didn't know that....
Love the crow - they see everything - great conclusion to your overview of the situation
It's a raven actually. The bigger cousin to the crow.
@@michaeldeierhoi4096 I suspected - but was not sure
Wish all Icelanders can find the strength to stand the huge challenge these eruptions are bringing upon you. Thank you and congrats for the excellent coverage work. Best wishes from Brazil.
Iceland had tourists in the Blue Lagoon resort during last eruption. Alarms went off and everyone had to escape the volcano. There's something very dangerous happening, and Iceland keeps rolling the dice.
I am so impressed by the people fixing the issues. I realize these are critical issues but I've been in major situations here in the USA and it took so much longer. Bow down to the workers for sure!
I think Iceland should invest in old cruise ships to help evacuation. The ship has all needed to give people housing temporarily. The ship can be relocated all around your island
I am praying for all of you. Stay safe and God bless!
@aregeebee201 have you ever had to wait for electricity, water, or other utilities after a natural disaster? It takes a very long time and life is hard
@aregeebee201you need to learn compassion. Those people lost all what they considered their lives
And the uncertainty of a new eruption around the corner
Glad they fixed the Hot Water Pipeline because it is vital. Housing takes a long time, I wonder if there are empty office buildings that could be converted to apartments?
It still seems that it will be vulnerable if a future eruption takes a similar path.
Love your humour amongst chaos and uncertainty.
Thanks, always works for me :) when the sarcasm is gone, it's little left :)
@@JustIcelandic In the UK, the older generation amongst us were brought up with the 'stiff upper lip'. Things have gone rapidly downhill here - and it is not lava! :)
Thank You for the update. Great footage and commentary, as always. Amazing news that the pipeline has been fixed and that plumbers are working to fix smaller leaks caused by extreme cold. The Crews, working in such harsh conditions, are incredible. It will be interesting to see the 'fix' built over the lava on the Blue Lagoon road. Hopefully, residents of Grindavik wishing to relocate will be adequately compensated for their properties and be able to find suitable, affordable housing in a safe location. It is a heartbreaking situation for many. While seversl tourists flock to witness the wonder of volcanoes and/or to bathe in the warm, mineral rich waters of Blue Lagoon, prayers go out to all local residents, their animals and locsl infrastructure affected by these eruptions. Looking forward to seeing your drone work when it is safe for you to film. 🙏 Prayers for the beautiful island of Iceland and its equally beautiful people. ❤🇮🇸🙏 💐Stay safe. ❣
These videos are way more informative than any TV-news or newspaper. You are doing a great job. Thanks, and keep up the good work :)
Glad the water problem is getting better. Hope everyone from Grindavik has found some new homes or towns to live in. This thing with this lava is crazy. Feel bad for the people there. Its like it is teasing everyone. Or testing their patience.Stay safe and healthy.
Tku for the update, so many people affected and all just waiting, it must be very difficult, thinking if you all, stay safe
Many thanks again for the update - this all threatens to turn into 'permacrisis', although as in 1973 there seems to have been some a prompt and highly efficient response from the construction and civil engineering industry. I was really impressed by the repairs to the hot-water pipes and the temporary bridge over the still-hot lava flow. A bit of a contrast to disaster repair here in the UK - usually in the wake of floods which have become more frequent recently. However, like you I'm surprised the authorities didn't as in 1973 use what we call in the UK, 'prefabs' (short for pre-fabricated houses). These were very successful in the aftermath of World War Two and the Blitz to the extent of becoming a bit of a national joke.
I've paused at Grindavik on a number of coach trips to the older eruptions, Solheimajokull and other places - I shall miss it. I hope recent events don't put other governments off using geothermal energy.
Thank you Gylfi. Couldn’t agree more with the idea of temporary accommodation. Ultimately the cost would be less than the approach they have taken. Hopefully lessons will be learned through this whole mess, and the same mistakes not made again. Beautiful footage as always. We watch and wait with you, and send you all the best …. 🥰
Illuminating as always!
Hi Gylfi hoping you are well and that everything is working sufficiently. Good to hear that hot water and heating is back on. Those government people should pay out full price that's the least grindavik Town deserves. As usual stay safe and be prepared from the Uk 🇬🇧 to Iceland 🇮🇸 p.s. that poor crow in the winter snow looks freezing 🥶 lol
Raven… no Crows in Iceland 😉
@@sgjoni Ah I stand corrected he still looks freezing cold poor thing
@@DarrenNugent-md4kd FYI. Birds like ravens that winter over and are probably year round residents in Iceland and well adapted to the cold weather. I have seen this myself in frigid weather here in New Mexico where birds in winter continue their daily activity foraging and sometimes stealing from others. Ravens are famous for that.
This is a particularly smart raven, warming his feet on the streetlight.
"These government people should pay"...
Sure! I wonder where they'd find this money?
Oh wait, this means all Icelanders would pay more TAXES?
I love the parting shot of the raven on the light.
Best regards from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks again for the update Gylfi. Keep up the good work you're my only source of news 😊
Much appreciated 😊 and welcome
Great video. 😂
I hope things get sorted for everyone
Love your information. Must say it's very impressive seeing how Iceland using the hot water to support the people and how well they do getting it back up and running after everything.
Thanks for the update! If there's any way to include more ravens in the future, I would love that! Stay safe out there.
Thank you for your new post. It's good that there is hot water again and people don't have to freeze there too. Everyone is waiting for better weather... including us here on YT so we can see another report from you.
Really like the presentation of this channel. No big flashy hype, just straight honest information.
Thank you. I have been watching your documentaries now for several months obviously and you do a great job I appreciate what you are doing. It's times like these when we find out just how small and insignificant we are.
Giylfi, thank you for this latest update. Having visited Iceland several years ago, I believed that your government was much more prepared for disaster than any other European country. It's sad to hear that their burying their heads as much as other nations are doing when it comes to doing the right things!
Let's hope as this horrible period in Icelands geological period continues that they listen to the experts and prepare more. I am sure they will.
Thank you, sir, for the update.
You are very welcome
thanks for the information and updates gylfi
keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
(3:07) I love how big that playground area is! 😃

So happy for you all! Have prayed for you.
Thank you Gylfi!! 💛💙
Always welcome :)
Big THANK YOU for all your work , Gylfi !!
Must not be easy to see all this happening and it still goes on ...
Love the way you' re reporting 👍
Thank you for keeping it short and sweet!
We all know who that Raven is and who he is going to report back to this evening.
Will any parts of the condemned houses be salvaged and reused? Or will the houses be able to be moved off of their foundations to other locations?
Impossible to move, all concrete but 80-90% of them are in fine condition...it's just do dangerous to stay in the town right now so this is just awful situation
Thank you for the update. You make a good job letting us know more about Iceland.
👍🙏>>>💚~~~ Thank You for the update and take care of that itch 🙂
Thank you, I will
Thank you, Gylfi, as always for your great reporting!
Appreciate the updates, from USA.
Welcome :)
Thank you for these reports, your coverage is much better than a lot of the news in my country on this matter. Wishing you all well, and much luck through this ordeal.
Article showed the road across the new lava field has been rebuilt by laying old crushed lava rock across the area and paved it. Great job!
Thanks again
Always welcome
Thank you for sharing your insights and all these incredible images. Looking at video feeds daily from Canada here. I travelled to Iceland twice and plan on going again soon with a group of 15-17 year old students. Hopefully, in a calmer period. I feel pain and grief for all the citizen of Grindavik and everyone else going through these unpredictable times. I keep my students updated daily. International news are important.
Keep up the good work. Your videos are incredibly interesting and informative to watch.
I am glad to hear they got the hot water pipe connected across the lava flow very quickly. I hope they take their heads out of the sand and think about an alternative plan for heating in the Reykjanes Peninsula. Thanks for the humorous perspective.
Thanks for this perfect documentation.
It's very sad that alternative warm & safe housing wasn't a priority from the beginning. I feel very bad for your citizens. Mother nature will always win. It's an inevitability. I know people there have been at the mercy of insurance & the state.
The US is having similar situations from major disasters but ours are from fires mainly, earthquakes, and floods. We of couse didn't have our volcanoes become active again but we did have horrific fires here in California, Hawaii and several other states. We have had whole towns burned down. The new housing is so unaffordable & the rich have put plans into motion to benefit them and have done nothing to help the many people hurt from these situations. Almost all of the people in towns that burned over the last 10 years have not been able to rebuild and move back in. The towns now belong to wealthy home owners.
The other horrible thing that has happened here is the major utility companies raising the rates for our electricity & gas by 40%. They have done this to pay for their lawsuits and for new equipment that was their responsibility in the 1st place. A Power company which controls much of our state of California didn't do needed upgrades & repairs that should have been done in some cases 20+ yrs ago. Judges sided in with the power company and now we are paying the price literally. Many people cannot afford to heat or air condition their homes. People may think the weather in California is 100% beautiful all the time but it is not. We have areas that get anywhere from winter temps of -25F° to 139°F in Summer. People in the Hawaii fires have had rents go from $4,500 US a month to $9,600US a month. Many people are experiencing homelessness as a result of their homes burning down and not finding anywhere else to live that they can afford.
My point here is not that it is about the US. My point is that we completely sympathize with the people of Iceland. We feel extremely bad for you as it's not like you want to or can just move to another area or even country. It's not a simple solution.
Please know we feel for Iceland and understand in some ways but just in a different way.
We truly hope things get resolved there and hope you all have safe warm housing. Everyone deserves that. 💕😊
Nature is stronger than we, but we can be smart and learn to dance with nature. In our county 2/3 is under sea level or flooded by rivers in winter. But we learned to make use of dikes and pumps and other waterdefenses and measure and calculate it all. We now serve the whole world with our knowledge. It costs a lot of money to develop the knowhow, but there are good returns in the long run. Greetings from the Netherlands. By the way, you need a strong sense of community, not forced from the outside, but from your guts.
Thank you so much for your educational updates for all us us worldwide - sending prayers from NC for all of you!
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your reports! Praying for Iceland from Missouri, U.S.A.
Gylfi, another great video. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the effort that you go to get us accurate information and the sense of humor that helps us cope with such dark news. Much love from Colorado USA.
Thank you
Welcome!
Thank you for filming from drones over a large area so you get an overall picture, didn't know Grindavik and blu lagoon and the heating plant were so close to each other.
We are there couple of weeks back. ❤ from India. Iceland and its people are kind and nice and they will be in our prayers. Hope infrastructure will be restored soon.
Thank you very much and welcome back to Iceland :)
Thank you, stay safe and warm ❤
Thank you Gylfi. I have been hearing people say that the Grindavik residents are not being properly reimbursed, almost as if it is a shock.
Sadly this is the case in most countries. I can't imagine how hard it will be for Iceland to recover from this disaster, or how soon, or even what it means for all citizens of Iceland financially.
They need to keep most of the money recirculating in Iceland, not lost to outside. There's plenty of work to be done, workers pay tax, and spend money, which if they spend on Icelandic goods means it stays there, some of which goes into tax to pay for more work and the recirculation goes on, and is good for the country, good for infrastructure, good for the economy.
Thanks for the update,stay safe🙏🙏🙏
We are all learning from the resilience of the Icelandic people
You are in our prayers daily and everyone suffering from natural disasters who also need the help and compassion of those allegedly in charge although most governments are useless , we know is all for the awakening of mankind
Thanks for the update and for not giving up
My best wishes to Iceland
I intuitively know that area is very special
Good morning Gylfi,
The volcano system near Grindavik begins to look like a geyser that erupts after a given time. The problem is that you never know where exactly it will erupt and how much. It would drive me mad.
Thanks for the info.
Stay safe.
Appreciate the update Gylfi. Stay Safe.
Watching from the U.K. really enjoying learning about your country from your videos
Thanks for watching!

Thank you again x
Thanks again!
Thank you for your update.
Praying for you all
Appreciated...
Thanks for the update,
Here in Auckland and other parts or New Zealand almost exactly a year ago, we had a 1 in 500 year flooding event that killed 7 and did billions in damage. Many homes were left uninhabitable. The government buyout is similar at 95%. It’s not ideal, and for some it was their “forever home”, but we need to remember to give thanks that we live in a country of privilege where it’s possible to be bailed out. The housing crisis here even sounds similar to Iceland. I hope there are long term plans in place for the resilience of the capital should the lava start flowing towards Reykjavik. The age of the lava flows there are slightly alarming
Thank you for your continuing coverage of the Iceland story. My wife and I only watch your videos because you have a great sense of continuity which helps us understand the whole picture. We have never been to Iceland, but hope to get there as soon as we are able without causing more issues as tourists. Cheers, Rick
Great reporting!
Thank you Gylfi!
thank-you for the thoughtful update
Thank you for your tireless, informative and nevertheless humorous work. Imho the best chanel and of course my fav for learning more about what happens on your beautiful island. Stay safe and keep goin! Greetings from Germany
Thanks for the update Gylfi. I admit I had the Ðetta reddast mentality about this string of eruptions, too... but if you Icelanders started worrying too much you'd have to leave Iceland immediately!
Anyways let's hope the next oneS don't destroy Svarstengi or Blue Lagoon, both are really important for the economy.
Thank you for that reporting. That was very informative.
Hello Gylfi 🫂 thanks for keeping this mood despite the news and keeping the world updated. Our eyes are everywhere without the twisted medias, thanks to people like you Bro 🫂 this way we can send our energy 💕 take care bro
Thanks Gylfi. This pattern looks like being the 'new normal'. It's awful for the Grindavikings. Our thoughts are with them.
Much appreciated, and needed
Thank you for the update, and I loved learning "þetta reddast". Please include a new icelandic term or word (or two) in every of your videos!
thanks again as always a very interesting update
Thanks Gylfi for another great video. I always have to listen to the very end to hear you say 'Iceland'. I am sure that first vowel is getting longer and longer 😃
Hi,I have a lot of respekt for the People who are working outside to make a new Pipeline for hot water, that would not be easy at this cold weather. Thanks for this dokumentation and greetings from Brunsvik.
