I love the AnKing, but I thought his walkthrough video was a little too complicated so I made this video as an, hopefully, easy guide to customizing your Anki background.

A couple quick fixes/troubleshooting tips from common questions:
*1. If your background isn't working or showing up correctly* make sure you have the most recent version of Anki (2.1.35 as of now, 2.1.37 is not as stable) and the addon.
Then, the most common mistake is not typing in the filename on the "background config" popup exactly as what the filename is in the folder, are you sure they are exactly the same? (timestamp - 4:17)

*2. If you are getting the error, "invalid code, add-on not available for your version of Anki."* You probably have the most recent (not as vetted) version of Anki (2.1.37). Download version 2.1.35 under downloads: apps.ankiweb.net/ and maybe rename that version "Anki 2" or something like that. BEFORE deleting or messing around with your current dack at all make sure to export it as described below (this will save your deck, with images, with the memory of learning times/etc.):
Export your current deck: go to file -> export (make sure "include media" is checked off AND export format is Anki Collection Package) -> click export -> redownload anki (name it like "Anki 2") create a new profile -> double click your previously exported file to get your regular Anki back in place -> try an download the addon again.
*3. To make the background black while reviewing cards:
Go to Tools -> Custom Background and Search Icon -> Setup Background/Gear (Config) -> find where it says, "Reviewer image": true and set it to "Reviewer image": false -> restart Anki and your reviewer image should be blank.
*4. If your textedit file is blank* , just copy and paste the code here below and you will have exactly what I have (change the colors to your liking)

@@MrJolinez Have you tried switching to Night Mode? Have you made sure, if you are in night mode, that the cod is "night mode" specific?

not the ones on the add-ons, that's a fake! and you can tell because you don't have the option to edit the heatmap from tools :)

@@MrJolinez I had the same problem. If you have one of the newer versions of the anki app, you should be able to click settings and turn on night mode

This video is much less technical, but equally helpful! Did the background of your cards change as well? Mine did I wish it stayed blank for easier visibility. Do you know how to fix that?

Hey thx for the video. unfortunately when I go to tools I don't find the custom background ... I tried to delete the add ons and install it again multiple times and my anki version is 2.1.46 What should I do to fix that ?
Do you know any way to change the font color of the "Deck, Due, and New" in the desk browser without having to turn on night mode. On default it's black but I want to change it to a white color but I can't seem to find that anywhere. I've been looking for a couple hours already haha.
Press ctrl+p or click tools and then press preferences. Once the preferences window opens turn on night mode
@@sajossa2530 How do we do so without turning on night mode? I personally like the white background while reviewing cards because I crop information from my word documents. It blends it more lol.

when I go to tools, there is no custom background gear icon option as you mentioned in your video at 3:32. I only downloaded anki today so it's definitely the newest version, and I copied the exact number you said for the add-on. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? oh btw i'm on pc, not mac

how do you get that stats section on the home page? i have to click on stats to go to a seperate page to see those little boxes that show progress.

I just have one question, would you happen to know how to fix the error that always pops up when trying to change the heatmap’s color? Mine tends to revert back to “lime” every time I close the app and when I try to change it to “ice”, it gives me the message saying “An error occurred. Please start Anki while holding down the shift key, which will temporarily disable the add-ons you have installed.”

I would try reverting back to Anki version 2.1.35 if you have version 2.1.37 it seems some of the older addons aren't functioning well with the new update.
If that doesn't work let me know.

Great video. As I’m approaching the end of this block in my med school I’m worried about what I’m going to do with the cards. Should I suspend them because they will irrelevant to the next block or keep them rotating but separate decks. But Also, I don’t want to mess with the anking deck organization. What do you think ?
Are you planning on taking step or a cumulative exam? If so, I highly recommend keeping up with your reviews from the previous block (daily).
If you are not taking a cumulative exam just suspend the cards.
Wish this was available for the anki app.
something i found out is if it doesn't work at first, sometimes the image is a jpg instead of a png if you download it somewhere else, so you have to type "filename.jpg" instead of just changing midnight to the file name because it's .png by default

I just checked your video today, lol I know it's late, but why my background setting looks totally different than yours? I don't see such "programming codes" in my settings. Is it because I'm using windows instead of mac? Or has AnKing simplified the setting view?

@@ZachHighley if you dont mind me asking, for how long have you been working out (months, years?) Exams always tend to disrupt my fitness routine in med school, I’m lacking the “consistency” in my workouts :/
@@hritvikjain__3594 Consistency is the biggest thing tbh, I don't sacrifice sleep/fitness for anything - even school. I feel like when I don't workout/sleep enough my school performance drops as well.
As for how long I'd say I started the ol' p90x when I was 17? And have been working out since (8/9 years).

It shows me that pretty sky on the main part but nothing in the tools menu. I'm using 2.1.51 Qt6.
Thank you for the amazing video. One thing, the photos which will add from Pexels must be in "png" format. How did you make the background of the study deck blank?
you can just change the .png to like .jpg or whatever your file ends with if that's the question there. As for blank, idk the default way of it yet but I think you can search up like a black/white image. Maybe disabling or taking the picture name out of the thing can work it but I haven't tried that yet so that may do something so be careful and do some research before that
Great video! I'm looking to add a background and have version 2.1.37 but I continuously get an error message when putting in the code to download the add-on. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? I know I'm putting in the code correctly but I'm not sure why it won't work.
Hey Madison sorry to hear that, you sure it’s the code: 1210908941?
If that doesn’t work I would try just export your current deck, redownload anki, and try and add the addon again.
If thattt doesn’t work I would try the other troubleshooting techniques I have pinned.

Before doing all of this I would just restart your computer and triple-check that you have the most up-to-date version of everything AND make sure the code you put in has no spaces/weird numbers, I would just type it in manually as opposed to cmd+c and cmd+v.

I shut off my computer then tried it again and then deleted Anki after saving my cards and then redownloaded it and then found a different Anki version and tried it there with no luck. The version I have is up to date but when I put in the code it says it's not supported on the version I have

I got another issue (so sorry to bother you with that!). My background flickers every time I click on something. For instance: I click on a deck, I click on a subdeck etc. It does not appear during studying a deck. Any ideas why? When I inactivate the addon background, the flickering stops. So it must be the background. It's just a little issue, but it's kind of annoying. Thanks!

Hey I don't think it's transparent it's just dark colored so it kind of matches my background.
I never even noticed the days of the week lol, try going to tools → review heatmap options → and change calendar mode to "continuous timeline"
If that text color code listed doesn't work completely you, you can just put *body{ color: white;}* in the same area along with the code provided!

Is there any option that takes the background out, while I'm reviewing? I choose GIF as background and found it a little distracting while learning 😞?

Hi there! Got some questions. I can't change the color of my heatmap. I'm using version 2.1.35. And how can I change the background of the heatmap? Yours is black and mine is lime with a white background. How can I see Monday, Tuesday etc.?
Also my headlines like Add, Browse, Stats etc. stay in black and they are hard to read. I would like to change that to white. The sentence "studied xxx cards in xxx days" also stays in black.
And my final question: when I choose a deck, is there any possibility to change the color of new, to learn and review cards? Because the number of "new cards" is hard to read with the background. Thanks a lot!
Hey, first thing, sounds like you are still in "day" mode. If you switch to night mode all of these should be fixed. So go to Anki → Preferences → Basic → and select "Night Mode."
As for the changing the color of "new," "to learn," and "review" cards, yes it is possible!

I have the lastest version of Anki and i'm on Windows. For some reason it doesn't work i even don't see the "AnKing.png" gear on my Anki home page! Big deal! I'm still very happy to be able to customize my Anki background! It's pleasant for the eyes

I copied the css but now when I'm doing my anki deck my review-new count is gone. (I mean when I'm studying I could see how many cards I had left but now I can't see that and it botheres me extremely-). Or does it have to do with the background? Can anyone help?;_;

You can adjust the opacity separately! I guess it’s a new feature that’s been added after he uploaded this video. I changed it to 0 for the review screen and it works perfectly.👌
thank you, this was really helpful, I just have one problem: Everything worked, apart from changing the text color - it stays black for me. I also tried to put the hexa number for white instead of just writing "white" but it still didn't work..... did anyone else have that problem?
Edit: Nevermind I found out that I just had to put Anki in night mode... I'll still leave the comment here, in case someone has the same problem.

Apologies, but those two text fields are being pulled from two different parts, one is from Anki and the other is from the Review Heatmap addon - and so I don't know how to access those texts from CSS :/

A little question: How to make the review page all black without changing the home page? Thanks for the video!
Mine is in night mode so it is automatically that, if you want to do that just go to "Anki" on toolbar -> Preferences -> Basic -> and make sure "nightmode" is checkmarked. Then just restart Anki.
If you want to keep it in normal (day) mode and change the reviewer to black let me know and I can tell you how, it is just a little more tricky as we will have to go into some CSS.
When I open the text file, there's no text in there... Can somebody help me out?
