  • Someone said they would love to see me go through my game library in a video, so here I am, doing so. It's a big library, so it's a big video!
    Don't worry, this is probably a one-time thing. Next video should be a regularly-scheduled Board Gem.
    Board Gems highlights older board and card games that are still great games today, and deserve to not be forgotten! New videos on the 3rd, 13th and 23rd of every month. (Mnemonic: G-E-M has 3 letters.)

    Absolutely loved watching that, your collection is obviously a great one, but I really enjoyed the info, trivia, care and knowledge conveyed in talking thru it, and the honesty too: plenty there yet to play! Thanks for the insight.

    Citrus is 10 years old. In today's board game culture, it's a old geezer. Let's see it! Actually...how about a designer spotlight series?

    • @BoardGems

      Citrus will come! And thanks for the suggestion; for now I'd like to keep the focus on the games. But I will reach out to Jeff Allers for the next game of his I'll do, and see if he's willing to do a Q&A.

    Thanks for doing this video, it was entertaining. Really neat collection too. Based on a lot of the requested games you have, I would say you have a lot of Dads on a Map (podcast) fans :D

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  Před rokem

      I've heard of that podcast but never listened to it. Would you say they talk about many of the same types of games I do? Any other podcasts or channels that focus on older games and not modern euros? I know of Hidden Gems (recommended!) but not much more.

    • @christianbank393
      @christianbank393 Před rokem

      @@BoardGems I wouldn't say they necessarily focus on older euros, but they aren't as big of fans of new games. They focus on games that have a higher degree of player interaction or shared incentive (which tends to also fall in line with old euro philosophy) but also 18xx, cube rails, COIN, and trick-taking. I noticed that a lot of the requested games you have are ones that they have brought to light on the podcast such as Bridges of Shangri-La and Portobello Market. I also listen to Hidden Gems and like them as well :)

      @@BoardGems Too many different interesting games in the video to comment on all of them, but one that stood out to me was when you mentioned Witch's Brew vs Broom Service: I recently got interested in Broom Service, but then upon researching I learned it was based on Witch's Brew, and after much agonizing and heavily researching both, I did decide to hunt down a nice copy of Witch's Brew (which wasn't cheap!) very excited to play it soon.

    There are definitely some games that I'll be looking into more after this video, starting with Poseidon.
    I've been trying to get Fresh Fish for a reasonable price in the US for awhile now and I keep missing out on it. Speaking of Friese, have you played Faiyum? I enjoy it more each time I've played it.
    Another game (not in your video) that I'm trying to track down (without success) is Kogge.
    Lastly, a game I recently acquired that I'm excited to play soon is Kaivai.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, Fresh Fish is hard to find now... and I don't think it will be reprinted soon. I get the feeling the 2014 edition will be the last one for a long time...
      Haven't played Faiyum, it's a little longer than I usually like, but I'm a fan of Friese's designs and I do want to try it. I'm looking forward to trying Free Ride! And I just picked up Feierabend.
      Kogge's been requested, but agreed, it seems very hard to find!

    Great collection. I really enjoyed checking it out. I was curious about Bali. Is that a reprint of the Rapa Nui game (card game) where you can sacrifice cards to the gods and is a set collection game? Or is it a sister game to the other Rapa Nui game that has a set up with islands where you sail around….?
    Ever hear of a game called DR Congo? Ming Voyages? Kind of obscure gems that I thought might be up your alley. Cheers.

      Thanks so much, Batuhan! And again, I'm sorry I haven't been able to get to your donations yet! Big City was played once 2p and it got the 👎 by my son - it was probably a mistake to try it first at that count, because I haven't been able to convince him to play again with more. (Just noticed I said in the vid I hadn't played Big City. Haven't played the Goldsieber edition - my son and I played the ridiculous deluxe edition once.) And Big Shot was played once 3p and it got a tentative 👍, but something happened in our lives shortly after and we haven't yet returned to it. IT WILL HAPPEN. Cheers!

      Can't offer opinions on Foundations of Rome, I'm afraid. Haven't played so can't help anyone interested in the 2nd printing being crowdfunded atm. I'm not a fan of the cost, but even moreso the massive Kallax-cube-sized box. I'd say, no matter how amazing the game might be, if you don't have lots of space for games then don't even consider it.
      Hmm, yes Ave Caesar, also The Rose King, Kingdoms (3-player only), Crazy Chicken (2-player only), Downfall of Pompeii... Well that's five games I love. I don't know if I can do a Top Ten!

    I was the one to suggest Arkadia and Diamond's Club and I really hope you enjoy them. That said, this collection is inspired and was a wonderful watch. I do hate to poke the eternal question, but I have to ask. What made you choose horizontal over vertical for most of your shelves?

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  Před rokem +1

      Oh, I've played Arkadia before and liked it a lot!
      On my Bestå shelves, I store many games vertically just because I can fit more that way - but if there's no other advantage to doing one or the other, I'll do horizontal. For one thing, I tend to keep my plastic inserts, and boxes may pop open and pieces may even spill out if the games don't snugly fit vertically. For another, game boxes get less wear that way; sliding games in and out causes a lot of wear on the games and their neighbours. (Well, compared to gently removing games higher in the stack than the game you want to play. If you're yanking out the bottom game of a stack, that's not great for the boxes either!)

    • @mrdrofficer
      @mrdrofficer Před rokem

      @@BoardGems That's great advice. I'm imploring that I should probably start doing the same with my titles as well. I've long stored them vertically as it just looked nicer. More book-like.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  Před rokem

      And that's perfectly valid too! They do look nice vertically. There's no right answer, I can just answer why I chose what I did.
