It started with Reagan. The college students were having marches, holding demonstrations and taking over administrative buildings to voice their opposition to the Vietnam War. Reagan said they needed to be grabbed by the scruff of their neck, etc. etc. and republicans agreed. First they needed to not let students get educated because they were figuring out too much about the real reasons for war. When Reagan was shot, Alexander Haig blurted out the true republican belief that in order to get the kind of control they needed "We need to get rid of the middle class" which has been a goal ever since. Dumb down society - keep the folks stupid, take away their middle class comfort, and the rich and powerful warmongers can once again maintain control over society. The public schools have deteriorated, money has been diverted to private schools, and the gap between rich and poor, powerful and powerless has effectively been achieved. Continue to give tax breaks to the rich, regain control over women, stop immigration, etc. etc. and the people will eagerly vote for someone like Trump.
