Break-in and sighting a New Rifle with Randy Newberg
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 08. 2018
- Randy Newberg takes his new Howa-HS Precision rifle to the shooting range to break in the barrel and calibrate his new Leupold VX-5 CDS scope as he gets ready to take it to Alaska for the first hunt of the season.
Some will argue the rifle break-in is not necessary. Randy chooses to do it, as is recommended by Howa Rifles and Nosler Ammunition. Randy uses a method of ten shots, with cleaning and cooling between each of the ten shots. He follows that with ten more shots, where he does groups of two, cleaning and cooling the barrel in between each two-shot group.
Upon barrel break-in, Randy then adjusts his CDS dials for a 100 yard zero.

Bought myself a new Browning Hell's canyon LR in 300win mag.
With new Leupold VX6HD 3-18x50
I did exactly same and results are flawless! Thanks for the tip!
2:25!!!! The Newberg shuffle begins. Hahah😎👍
Not quite the Icky Shuffle, but I'll get there.
Damn you Randy, you’re living my life.
Sure wish leupold would send me over a few vx-5’s to try out... Another great video Randy. Goin to try this barrel break in process with a few of my new rifles next time I’m at the range!
They will send you a few to try out for 1k a piece. Haha. The break-in sure will be costly with ammo the way it is right now.
I love my VX-5 3-15 x 44. I have mine mounted on top of a Christiansen Traverse.
how far out can you shoot with the 15x? im thinking of getting the 3-18 vx6 but its $1900
@@shervinghannadian9651 my CDS says 900 yards zero at 100 yards. You definitely can get more with a 20 degree cant . Mind you I’m shooting a .270 Win for hunting. I can actually shoot 700 at best, that’s just my personal ability is all.
I don’t know how experienced you are… it’s hard for me to see the difference in the VX-5 and VX-6 so I didn’t see a reason to pay the extra amount.
Cool videos guys! Thanks for all that you do! It helps a newbie out!
Always take the boresighter off before you send rounds downrange ha ha . We love ❤️ you man keep up the good work. Greets from Canada.
Like a kid in a candy store. Range day is lots of fun. Definitely the best part of preparing for the season.
I love the smell of gun powder.
Thank you Randy for explaining how to break-in in a rifle.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing with us. For the first time I saw such serious hunter dancing on the range after hitting target on 400 yards distance. :)
Each time I see that new Howa I like it even more. Thanks for more good info.
Me too. It shoots way better than I am capable.
Hey aren't you in Alaska hunting now? If so I hope you get to give a "Howa Handshake" with one of those new rifles!
Is it wierd that I recognized Randy in a Leupold commercial from him bending over to catch his breath
The commercial with the old fat grey haired guy looking for the nearest Dairy Queen?
@@Fresh_Tracks 😂😂🤣🤣
Great video on my birthday. Just bought the scope and a howa will be my next rifle.
I’m going to try and make sure you get credit for my scope. Because that’s $800 Leupold wouldn’t be getting from me if you didn’t make these videos with them
Thanks for supporting them. Hope you have many great hunts with your new set up.
@@Fresh_Tracks Thank you Randy. I'm actually brand new to hunting. I have taken doves and a Javelina in Arizona. Now I just moved to Colorado for Medical School and I just put that brand new Leupold on my father's old .270. I'm very excited to be in Colorado and I cannot wait to go for elk, mule deer, and black bear with my father's old deer rifle. Hopefully my school schedule permits haha
Every time I see the range, I be thinking, man I should be at the range now!!!!!
Go!!!!
On the way!!!!!
Great video ..
That is so nice of Leupold. Maybe you could give one to a loyal fan like myself!!??
Glockshooter09 Well we can dream cant we.
Glockshooter09 sorry bud... he is sending the extra to me!
I'll put in a request ;).
I like the rifle stock.
HS Precision.
Nice rifle and scope set up, can't wait to see it in action in the fall.
Took it to AK last week. Videos will be up in mid-September.
I can really appreciate the fact that your using Lupold bases & rings. Should I assume that you don't shoot beyond 500yds. Lupold really needs to consider a 20 MOA availability w/dovetail setup. Can you please advise about beyond 500yds with your setup. Thank you...
You should hear all the flak I get for fire finishing (Tubbs final finish Bullets) my rougher barrels (all production barrels have different degree of machining marks) after a break-in session.
Yes it’s a lot of work and rounds sent down range, but every time I’ve done it my rifles hit where I want them to and they clean up without any copper fouling a lot easier.
Kudo’s for sticking to your guns Randy.
My same experience, but given how much grief I get for doing break-ins I figured I best put the disclaimer in there.
Greetings from new Zealand.Oh man those new rifles look great randy !! Shame I just bought myself a howa alpine mountain rifle last year (which I love and is about perfect for our Bush hunting here in nz.). Look forward to seeing what you come up with In conjunction with howa .
Couldn't help but laugh when Randy's running down range and it reads "Always clear the range before heading down range"
What is the best Howa in a 7mm 08 ? Stock and all. I see a lot of problems with the ultra light , bad stocks and jammed brass elections?
Which color option is this rifle? Thinking about picking one up!
Can you tell us more about your Howa in the 7-08? The SS action and barrel with the darker colored stock.
Thanks
I'm looking for another 7-08..(Grandkiddos)
We always break in our sniper barrels in the military to lay copper in the microscopic pores and imperfections then we used shooters choice to keep it clean on the magnums we would strip the barrels with sweets 7.62 solvent every 1000 rounds oh yeah and no dancing on the range randy 😳
SheerWill Survival You have practice your dancing to, for when you are on video and you take down a beautiful elk you don’t want to look goofy because you didn’t practise. You replicate at the range what you do in the field and the includes “THE DANCE”. “EVERYBODY DANCE NOW”.
You know, Randy, you dont need to do the barrel break in... 😂
Gotta mess with ya
The break-in procedure for bolt-action rifles is too time consuming, delicate and bothersome. This is why I prefer the AK-47. It's break-in procedure is much simpler:
1) Fire several hundred rounds of ammo from it until if becomes burning hot.
2) Piss on the rifle and into the action and barrel to cool it down.
3) Dry off the piss by dragging it in a pile of sand or burying it in a mound of dirt.
4) Hit the rifle with a hammer or drop it on the ground several times to dislodge and remove the dirt or sand.
Your AK-47 is now broken in.
We got the same dance moves
My wife just rolls her eyes.
Nice rifle but you did not mention what caliber??
I've got two howa rifles a 7mm rem mag and a 308. And the only way I was able to get accurate load was to run ladder tests for charge and then jump tests for seating. I had no luck with any factory ammo be it Nosler or Hornady. And I forked over the cash for the match grade ammo. So don't think you are going to buy a howa and get 1/2 moa. You are going to work for it and tune up a load. Burn your money at the range to work up a load.
Shoulda bought some Bergara rifles.
Absolutely love mine. And they’ve been tack drivers a sub 1/2moa from day one even using cheap Winchester deer season ammo in them.
Morning Randy nice video. all your videos could you put in what caliber your shooting. Do you have a video that shows, how to a just [one of the scope you just got for a long rang shot. I have one can’t figure out how to use it. To adjust for long-range
Looks like that 270 had you in big grins!
I love that cartridge. Maybe I love too many cartridges, if that is possible.
@@Fresh_Tracks DQ rules. I just had a Dilly-Bar.
Hey Randy just out of curiosity you talk highly about the 7mm-08 but always hunt elk with the 308. I was just wondering why I don’t see you using the 7-08 on elk?
Pretty much the same, but for elk i prefer to step up to a .30 calber bullet when I can. I am confident the .284 caliber of the 7mm08 would do just fine on elk. All personal preference.
Good video....didn't see you clean it before you shot it,guess you just left it out...since there are many ways to manufacture a barrel and rifle it,hence the argument on how to break in a barrel...just do what the manufacturer says...they know their product.
Yes, I did a couple dry patches before the first shot. And yes, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
What caliber and barrel length do you recommend for Elk and Deer hunting in this HOWA? Do you prefer the Leopold VX 5 or VX 6? Thank you.
livewiretennis I think he said he uses anything from 7mm-08 to 308 to 300 WM
Yup, Enjoi has it. I would recommend either the VX-5 of VX-6, depending on desired features and budget. I have both and love them.
Yeah no doubt that you hit it bud l heard the impact up here in Canada. Ha Ha.
Randy, so many people say the lead sleds are a bad idea. I see you using one and toured a deadly shooter/hunter. Do you find anything bad about them? I shoot 7mm, 30-06, 270 and my new savage ultralite.308.
Only problem I had with my lead sled is shooting my 7mag and 300wsm on it. They shot better off bags.
Randy , congrats on your new rifles from How ! Always fun to get. New rifle ! What caliber did you get this year ? Same of what you always carry , 308 ?
I have a 7mm08, 6.5CM, .308 Win, and a .300 Win Mag. Trying all of them in different situations.
Mate I have a howa 1500 30/06 what Scope would you recommend your help would be great cheers
Jason Foley what type of environment are you hunting in? How far do you expect your average shot to be? Will you be using the rifle for anything besides hunting?
What scope model do you use? I am looking at a Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40. In New Mexico for elk & deer both this year.
I have VX-6, VX-5, and VX-3i. I think you will be very happy with the Freedom.
Randy Newberg, Hunter
I will figure this out, thanks for replying! I also started looking at the VX-5 today... I realized I only will “cry” once when buying quality gear!
This barrel break-in is that your way or a recommended way? I do break-ins but I do more shots.
What Howa recommends.
pretty cool, but could you do that with an old M16A2 with open sights at 500 yards? I can't see that far anymore but i used to!
Heck no. My eyes are too bad.
Pendleton or Lejeune?
Randy what’s your thoughts on the 7mm Remington magnum
Great cartridge.
meters? METERS?! huh?!
seriously, though, well done.
My range is in meters as well, out to 800m. But, i'm in Canada
I'm getting ready to purchase my first Howa and it will be .308. Randy, how many shots do I have to make to break in the barrel or can you put a link here where I can access that information. You have inspired me to try Howa. Thank you sir!
He has an earlier video one part of it I think it's like 50 rounds I'd watch the video to be sure
Chris Seymour , in this video he breaks the rifle in with 20 rounds. 1 round, clean and cool for 10 shots. Then 2 rounds, clean and cool for the next 10.
Thank you sir.
Are those WEAVER mounts?
Nope, Leupold.
Hey Randy, I have a 30-06 that hasn't been sighted in. I will be hunting Mule deer and Elk for the next couple of years. I am in Colorado and was wondering if you had any recommendations of what I should sight it in for?
Logan Traxler if you choose an optic with a bullet drop compensation retical. Or one with mil-dots. Or a simple cross hair and nothing more. You must first learn to read your optic's retical. Then zero at 100y. Then go shoot A LOT At ever distance from 100y out to 500y. Then you will know your abilities with your rifle. Along with your rifles abilities with you.
And Have fun.
Thanks
Depending on what train of thought most modern amo says 200. The two ways of thinking is 100 then drop compensate. The 2nd is 200. Imagine you are shooting down a pipe. The idea is to utilize your full arc for tighter groups out to 400. This train of thought says you aren't shooting beyond that. For most people and level of skill this is preferred method. If you are a long range shooter the first is preferred.
Good comments here. These guys have your dialed in, @Logan.
@@Fresh_Tracks We try not to steer anyone wrong. 😆
Hey Randy I saw you in south Colorado running out of a restaurant i think you were going down to northern New Mexico. I said Hi and you totally ignored me..lol
So where is this range?
Sorry about that. With my hearing, you are best served to throw something at me to get my attention. This is my home range in Logan, MT.
@@Fresh_Tracks Thank you.
I enjoy your videos. When you whisper during your hunts I actually fall asleep while watching 😂
Lol I don’t Dance
Break-ins are ridiculous.
phssss Howa doesn't even produce left handed rifles.
Jonathan thornton you can easily pull the trigger of a howa with your left hand lol
No
