Recently, we checked out the Bergara Ridge Carbon Wilderness, a lightweight hunting rifle. I topped it with Leupold’s VX-5HD 3-15×44 riflescope. Here’s a closer look at the optic.

I own 2 of these exact scopes as well as 2 VX-6 HD scopes and this exact VX-5HD CDS Fire Dot (which I've had for 4 years) has become my all around do everything scope. I have one on a Tikka 6.5 Creedmoor, and one on a Browning X-Bolt 6.5 PRC...I use Leupold Back Country mounts pretty much exclusively now and the fire dot is simple to use and daylight bright if needed or wanted. The 3 power is perfect for pigs when taking multiples in close range and fast moving follow ups and the 15 really reaches out a long ways for any longer hunting distance precision shots. The weight to features ratio can't be beat as the glass and coatings are all the same as the VX-6HD lineup. This truly is the do it all scope and personally I turn mine into a VX-6 by adding the throw lever and the alumina scope covers that come with the VX-6 but not the VX-5's...CDS system is amazing and I highly recommend this scope.

so I see all kinds of long range sites really bagging on the Leupold brand. particularly Rokslide. anything to that? especially the tracking. and some thing they call the "drop test". I have always really stuck with the brand but have had a few bad ones in the bunch.

I have been running that exact scope for 3 seasons now and absolutely love it. I have it mounted on a Tikka T3 lefty in 30-06 and it is my go-to white tail and elk rifle. I own several custom rifles, and can honestly say this rifle and scope combo is the most accurate I own. Yes, it helps that I have developed a load that the rifle loves and have the custom turret for that load, but the clarity of this scope, accuracy of how it tracks and the perfect magnification range rounds it out so well. I run only Leupold optics on all my rifles, having a couple of Mark 4’s and several VX 3’s, but this scope is the clearest and brightest of my collection. Definitely a winner in my opinion. Thanks for the review!

Ive had it for about 4 years now ive had to send it in for warranty once tho for dust inside on the cross hairs, they fixed no problem tho under warranty and had it back with in 2 weeks of sending it in. Last year tho I dropped my rifle from my shoulder and it landed upside down on the scope on a hard rocky road didn't break anything but put a good little mark in it and a few small marks on the turret. I went to the range on the way home at day thinking for sure I'm gonna have to at lest readjust it a bit after that hard fall but it was still bang on when I shot it.

I've owed Leupold scopes since my first VX3 purchase in 1994. That very VX3 is as good as it was 30 years ago, even tho I dropped my rifle from my tree stand many years ago and the rifle landed on the scope. I thought for sure it was trash but, I picked out a knot on a tree and it hit dead center. That made me a Leupold fan for life. I'm looking at purchasing a new rifle in 7mm PRC and plan to put the VX5 Gavin just reviewed on it.

If you’re a hunter or want to get into hunting it’s a great option with everything you need in a good scope and nothing you don’t. I have mine mounted on a Bergara Ridge SP 6.5 creedmoor (56mm objective) one on a M77 Mark 2 30-06 and the 3rd still in the box but will probably go on my Bergara Ridge 22-250.

I have this scope on a top shelf smokeless muzzleloader. A big investment for me. The CDS feature is spot on. I't's so fast and confidence inspiring. I just KNOW I'm on with a clean reticle. I like the side focus. Four power is wide and clear. At fifteen power and 200 meters I can see tiny scraps of paper fly from my little groups in lower light.. I mostly keep the dot on the lowest setting and It helps without getting in the way, I enjoyed zeroing it. In no hurry, I walked it to the center a few clicks at a time. A perfect dotted line. It was light and handy hunting this year. That really helps on a large rifle that I carry. I'm so glad I spent the money. I don't know a lot about precision long range target shooting, For HUNTING,.with medium/long ranges possible, Its just about perfect for me. For scopes, I'm all in with Leupold. I have a few others that now sit in a box in the basement.

Well it's a nice scope, and I've been looking for a new scope for my 30-06 for the last couple of years. Something definitely in that power range. But up here in Canada add other 500 bucks to that price tag. Sooo I just purchased the new redesigned Helix by Element optics. Has all the features that I have been looking for. Great reviews and about half the price of the Leopold. 2×16-50HD SFP, BDC illuminated reticle, side focus, screw on thrown leaver, capped turrets, two sets of lenses caps. In depth owner manual. Stickers to write down the ballistics for the caliber and bullets you're shooting (the subtensions of the reticle. If you choose to hurt with the caps off they provide these aluminum screw down o-rings to protect the threads and seal the scope. That's the first time I've seen that feature on any scope. Weight is 25.6oz. Sitting here in the box, just have to get it mounted. Can't wait 😊

I really like mine (it’s on a Tikka 7 mag). My only gripe is the windage adjustments were mushy and not really tactile or audible. So it was difficult to precisely adjust windage when zeroing. But once I got it zeroed I just leave it alone so it was a minor inconvenience.

Good glass, locking elevation dial, multiple reticle options, light weight, GREAT low light performance and of course it MADE IN THE USA. I use this exact scope on my .270 Winchester and it's been great, with a couple of disappointments. I do wish at this price range there were some different reticle options. The TMR reticle Leupold makes available on other models would be great. The bigger problem, to me, is that the adjustment turrets are mushy. Not a little mushy. Really mushy and soft and indistinct with very faint "bumps" (not clicks) which you can barely feel. This requires you to visually check to see how far your elevation or windage adjustment was, as you can't tell simply by reaching up, dialing and counting clicks. I have some really inexpensive scopes made by companies that don't have the great reputation Leupold does . . . and yet you can feel distinct crisp "clicks" when you adjust those scopes. I don't know if Leupold went with nylon internal parts to save money? For such a nice clear scope with lots of great features (I love the locking zero stop on the elevation and that the windage turret is covered) I can't understand what the heck happened with the mushy indistinct cruddy elevation and windage adjustments. I noticed this evaluation by the Ultimate Reloader didn't mention this at all. Leupold is likely a sponsor, so I get it.

    • @mrjeffjob

I’ve noticed that also on my L’s and it’s a factor in why I’m moving away from the brand. When you can get a $280 Swampfox budget optic with great audible and tactile adjustments there’s no excuse for not having it.
I have the exact scope Gavin reviewed and everything is great EXCEPT the mush turrets.
To be fair to Leupold though I just got a Steiner Predator 2-16x42 yesterday that is a $1800- $2000 scope street price. Same damned turrets! I’m seriously considering sending it back because of this. The one speed bump in my decision is this. It has the fantastic E3 illuminated center reticle that is my all time favorite hunting reticle. 100- 600 yard BDC hash lines and 10 mph wind dots so it’s about every field hold you’ll ever need without being busy.
Burris also has this reticle on their Signature line that comes in at between $500 and $700.
I also have this in 3-15x44 and it has the E3 AND locking turrets.

Mine's on a savage 110 bear hunter in 300wm. Non illuminated, i went with the wind plex reticle because the cds system makes elevation marks redundant. It is an absolute tac driver.

I own two of these; one on a Weatherby MK V (7mm Weatherby Mag) and one on a Weatherby Vanguard (7mm Rem Mag). They have functioned flawlessly for the past 5 hunting seasons here in the San Juan mountains of Colorado under every condition imaginable. Lots of vertical here when elk, sheep, goat, and mule deer hunting. Weight is a premium and my rifles are neither light nor heavy at 10lbs each fully loaded up. I think the scope is just about perfect for this application. Would love it if the center portion of the crosshairs were slightly thinner but that’s knit picking.

I own 3 of these and have them on a 325wsm, 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag. Two of the three failed to track and return to zero after about 60 rounds. Leupold replaced the erector system in both. One of the repaired scopes is still going strong, the other failed again. Leupold sent me a New in Box replacement. The scope on my 325 has never failed to return to zero or dial correctly.
With a 66% failure rate, I don’t know how much faith I have in their ability to dial a bunch. Set and forget and they never fail.
I went to a Nightforce NXS for repeated dialing and have not had an issue. For my eyes, the VX5 glass is better, but dialing reliability goes to the NF in my opinion.

A more budget option with some of the same features is the busses signature series 3-15x44. It is only a 1" tube and no zero stop... but it does have resetable pop up turrets. 20oz and probably half the price of the Leopold maybe less

I was just looking at maybe getting this scope for the wife's 25-06. I just updated it with a carbon Mesa stock to lighten it up some for back packing. The main reason for thinking about it was the CDS dial. This would save a step and time, currently we are ranging, looking at the app or Kestrel then dialing. Could you discuss the input data needed to send Leupold for getting info for the custom dial, and then testing the accuracy of the dial system? Because we hunt different states and elevations, it makes picking an elevation input difficult.

This is a great scope! I have many on my collection of hunting rifles and a better deal then the vx6 for misting hunting! I do like my vx6’s but at almost half the price they are much more affordable for most hunters and most hunters couldn’t tell any diffence looking through the scopes! I have been using Leupold 60+ years and even their M8 scopes were the best for there time!

I have the Impact 29 MOA reticle on a 300 Blackout subsonic bolt action and an 8.6 Blackout subsonic bolt action. Great in most ways, but both have disappointing focus at distance. I expected a sharper image for the price point. As shorter range optics for rapidly dropping bullets, it's a good fit for my application.
