Of the things Lynch totally mishandled in the film, I think the worst sin was Alia and her terrible dialog. It was bad enough that he changed the entire meaning of the story by having it rain (thus totally undercutting everything we learn about Arakis before the end, everything that is supposed to come after). But he took the one truly unique and fascinating character and turned her into an example of how one should never write nor deliver dialog.

      It’s actually the director’s pseudonym:
Alan Smithee (also Allen Smithee) is an official pseudonym used by film directors who wish to disown a project. Coined in 1968 and used until it was formally discontinued in 2000, it was the sole pseudonym used by members of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) when a director, dissatisfied with the final product, proved to the satisfaction of a guild panel that they had not been able to exercise creative control over a film. The director was also required by guild rules not to discuss the circumstances leading to the movie or even to acknowledge being the project's director.

Because a huge amount of the book is just the various character's internal monologues. It's their thoughts about the subtleties and subtext of what other people are saying. Given that so little of what's important in the book is actually said out loud, this was David Lynch's solution. I think we can all agree it was an imperfect solution, but in this one regard he really did try to stick to the source material.

Even when the film was made there was pressure on Blake Edwards to recast and reshoot those scenes with an Asian actor. Audrey Hepburn even agreed to work gratis during that time. Edwards refused. Woke is good. It means you are aware that racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. are bad things and we should do better.

I was a lot older, maybe 16, when I caught it on late night TV, and was blown away by how different it was from all other sci-fi. Then I read the books, and found that they are much better (and the film deviates from them in some crucial ways, like Paul being the anti-hero rather than a hero). But I still don't hate the film.
