  • The new Landcruiser 300 V6 diesel engine will feature a so-called 'hot vee' - where the exhaust is in the vee between the cylinder banks, and the inlets are to the sides.
    And this does have some technical plusses - like minimising lag and maximising efficiency. Merc, BMW and Audi have adopted some hot vee engines.
    But they are prone to heat-related problems - like excessive oil consumption, and premature valve seal failures.
    Toyota has had a litany of technical problems lately - concerning the deployment of far simpler tech (like the 2.8 diesel DPF failure fiasco).

      @@adoreslaurel Yeah, the JB got a lot of people, there was no new Torana's and they won COTY '82.
      The big kicker was that the Camira never really managed to get much better over successive gens and they all more or less had some kind of major malfunction, so I guess in a way hanging out for the series 2 wasn't really applicable. But I guess thats what they'd call an outlier in statistics.

      @@krissteel4074 I drove the next model the 1.8 with fuel injection, it felt better power wise, they always handled well, not keen on that diagonal braking thing they had.

    Love your work John, currently watching this edition in the comfort of my trailer at Mary’s Pool in the Kimberley. We did stay at Dingo Creek near Leinster. Generally try very hard to use our camper for sleeping and cooking, prefer to use the tree for the effluent. 😆👌 P.S. towed the camper here with the last of the 200 Series Landcruisers, poverty pack GX for me. Not often you can by an "old new car" these days. I’m impressed !

    I have a friend who independently tests the 2.8s. They came up with a solution for the dpf problem but Toyota seemed uninterested as it was aussies telling them how to do it. I can put you in touch with him if you like

    I can just imagine it now. Landcruiser 300, Simpson dessert, 50 degrees in the shade, Engine screaming it’s lungs out doing 35kph clambering over 1800 Sand dunes. The hot V transforming the surrounding metal into thermite.

I grew up up on family sheep station in the Flinders Ranges that “exclusively” had Cruisers from the 40 - 75 series, and my first 4WD HDJ80 GXL, through to TRD 4000SL and lastly a KDJ150. Built tough back then but I have to agree with your premonitions about these new Generation versions. Sadly not built for what they had been in the past but still a very reliable car for the kids footy run on the weekends 😉

      I have been driving landcruisers since 1984
      Had quite a few since then...
      NEVER had a problem with any of them
      So I can only speak from my experience over the last 1 million km driven...
      I still don’t feel the need to commit suicide and go out to buy a 2.2 litre Kia shitwa clown car...
      Just sayin

      While there are many soccer mum types owning these, however most of those types tend to choose European brands over the “boring” Toyota. As a Land Cruiser owner for several decades I can attest to the fact that it is when outback that the most Land Cruisers are seen, and when getting to particularly remote locations like Cape York or Birdsville, as much as 90% of the vehicles out there are Land Cruisers. I would suggest that the majority of us Land Cruiser owners tend get our Cruisers into the rough stuff where we get a little more than just luke warm.
      I wouldn’t trust an over-engineered V6 anywhere that is a long way from town. My V8 Sahara will have to last me the rest of my time on this (remote) planet, or I will be buying used older models. My old straight 6 Land Cruiser was reliable as heck. No V6 for me.

      @@artistjoh Yes, the old straight 6 was also marinised & badged by Yamaha for boats, that engine was an option for my boat. I have not heard any horror stories about the "Yamaha" diesel. For the record I have Volvo Penta KAD42, another big chunk of iron but has not been apart in 27 years service.

      @@russcattell955i The old engines weren’t perfect by any means, but they lasted while the newer over-complex designs are definitely not a good thing for anyone who keeps a car more than three or four years. My previous Land Cruiser I drove for 17 years and my current one is 5 years old now, and is intended to last another 10 to 15 years. These newly over-engineered engines are not designed for people like us.

    Wise words John, as always. It's amusing to read the 'motoring press' reviews of new cars over the decades, each one extolling the cars' 'amazing new features' and 'reliability improvements', then reading the subsequent reports of each car's inherent problems and design flaws as they age. I will always let someone else have the testing experience so they can discover all the issues before I'm able to make a properly informed purchase, not to mention saving approx 50% on new price 🤑

    Keep your V8. It's a proven powerplant that just delivers in spades. To deliver more power in a V6...means higher temperatures and higher loads on engine components. I would wait at least 2 years before I even looked at that new V6.

      If you think of buying an RAV4 have a good drive of it to see if to love, understand, comprehend the electronic gearbox. I have the first of the new shape, post rear tire gate, and I would never buy an other. Let me down dramatically a couple of times (often in minor ways) and only survived due to the compassion and quick braking of others. Viz. If the computer prepares for an anticipated action only to have the driver do/demand something else, the resulting electronic confusion can leave one dead on the pavement, mid intersection, whilst it figures it out, if it figures it out. One drives straight and level for a time as the heart, and cursing, subside. This fault can't be replicated on demand so no fault can be found.
      Be prepared for a pyramid reasons from service, Good luck.-

    John, did you read the fine print on the sales brochure? The high under bonnet temperatures are not a problem, it's been fully accounted for with asbestos insulated wiring and rock wool based paint. It's a bugger to spray but the sheep love it.

    Spot on about heat management on the BMW engines, John. I run the S63 engine and I have a SOP to drive easily before shutdown, open the bonnet on arrival at home and check the coolant pump is still pumping on shutdown. I don’t know if this type of enhancement will be communicated to the local yocal.

    'Brand fanboy'? Or 'really likes a particular car?' One of these is correct. One is not. Having a favourite car does not a fanboy make. Having a favourite brand, does. John. If I was a brand 'fanboy' would I have made that brake rotor video in the first place? And, watch more of my shows. You'll quickly see, the LC-70 is good BECAUSE its basic. The fact that is so old fashioned is what makes it so practical and useful doing what I and many 4WD enthusiasts do with our vehicles. It appears as if you do not appreciate that not everyone sees cars like you see them.

      I apologise if that was unfair. To me, you are pretty clearly a Toyota fan, and I don't doubt you have rational justifications for this - especially given the usage you subject them to. No disrespect was intended. Rather, my central point was that they appeared to shaft you anyway, despite your overall positive stance on, and general support for, the brand. Which seems like a significant missed PR opportunity for them. We just think about the 79 differently because of our different subjective positions. I certainly get why you like it. I mean, if I were you, I'd rather have a 79 than a Defender...

      70 Series LCs are NOT good, they are poorly built, weak, uncomfortable and overpriced as hell. Probably worth 30k AUS yet they charge 80, and you have to spend double that to make it a half decent car. the engine is piss weak for a V8, has the same power as a I4 with worse economy. They don't even have an aligned wheel tracks. Nothing good about them

      I think Mr john bashes the brand only to get famous. The 70 series is agricultural, rural reliable car. It’s simplicity is the point here for reliability.
      I love the Toyota brand. However, if you convince me objectively in another brand I would be more than happy to (convert). But for now, Toyota is number 1 and the engine they’re making is very good in idea. Now let’s watch how it performs.

      Have been following both of you for years. I completely agree with Andrew on the simplicity - while we don't have any 70 series on the farm at the moment that'll be changing soon as the old land rover series utes are a bit beyond their use by dates. Nobody else in the market has the same level farm rig as a 70 bar maybe the Merc and that's just insane $$$s.
      On the other hand Toyota is losing its place for the same reasons John regularly mentions, I'm seeing fewer and fewer 200's and 70's even Prado/Hiluxs out bush and a massive part of that is the lack of support and the dodgy quality (eg DPFs, brakes, injectors, snorkels in the 70s etc etc) that Toyota is putting out these days.
      While it has its issues I think that Inneos and similar companies are going to have a massive leg up here as the bush is just screaming for a reliable workhorse that isn't IFS and can take a beating that doesn't come with shitloads of buggy electronics.

      You should thank God for not getting the 1GR-FE engine. It’s not reliable at all. The engine drinks gasoline like a hog. The block is weak. The timing belt assembly is a joke. The whole engine is trash.

    Thanks John!! You saved me $$$. Respect!!! I'm already watching on the sidelines apparently the (UAE - the middle East) are already testing the LC300s already!! So far it's the 10speed gearbox, that has issues and loss of power!! ALREADY...
    Over there they "Drag Race and Punish" there Cars and Suvs! just for fun!! Cause they can!! And they have the $$$$$ and OIL to do so.. lucky them!
    Your absolutely right John, just watch the "Value" of the LC300 depriciate in another 12 months or so..

    Thanks again for an interesting video. I think caution would be financially prudent. I have towed my sewage farm along the Nullabor a few times. A few years ago we were coming home in October, when it hit 42 degrees C between Penong and Eucla. A mate of mine headed over to NSW a in December 2019. It hit 50 degrees C heading towards Eucla. He too was towing a mobile Gary Glitter. If your $100k plus 300 Series overheated near Eucla, that would present a significant opportunity to work on your resilience and stoicism. So it is not all bad.

    Interesting ideas there John, especially on the 'Hot-Vee'..You mentioned your love affair with the 4.4 BMW V8...Have you not seen the 'hundreds' of consumer issues regarding big end bearing faults? BMW (more so in the UK) have denied almost all engine failure warranties as a result of 'over zealous use of throttle input, applied by the owner'..

    I used to have one of those n63 4.4L twin turbo engines, that was hands down the best driving car I ever had or even test driven... On the other hand, I used to carry a jerrycan of 0w40 oil in the trunk for it, and it leaked all the time...

    Cant fathom the emotional maturity (or lack thereof) of somebody who would chuck a tantrum because a mean little man criticised their preferred brand of vehicular locomotion. Incidentally, driven Toyotas pretty much my entire middle aged adult life. So 10/10 for confirmation bias incentive. Use to be an unwritten law that buying the first in a new generation was an unwise move. Guess some knowledge gets lost through the generations.

      @@stultuses or the latter model XF falcons with the “modified” rear man seal. At 140,000 km like clockwork they would fail. Was never a problem on the earlier ones. The modified ones must have been 10 cents cheaper.

      @@AutoExpertJC John can you comment about the plastic cover on the top of modern motors, and the word among beer-garden Engineers that it's removal helps cooling. I would think that Mr Toyota (for example) would not install it and save $5 production cost if he could.

    There's the option of cooling fans with ducting in the V section to keeps temps in check. Will mainly be the oil lines on the turbo that will suffer. Hopefully they don't put the starter motor there.

    My theory on car manufacturing is that as long as the share market for any manufacturer is rising, the engineers are mostly in charge. When it levels they share the responsibility but the moment it dips, the MBA,s take over. It’s happened with Honda, Jeep, Suzuki, Nissan, Chrysler, Ford and GM. Remember when Herman Diess of VW wanted to use 8bill of advertising revenue for R and D after dieselgate? The family shareholders got rid of him. His part in dieselgate didn’t help him much either. Some times the companies pull out the dive before they hit the hard deck, sometimes like in the US the govt gives them a nice trampoline to bounce back on and sometimes they just wallow along the ground until someone thinks, “ I know, let’s build something reliable the people actually want”. Rounds of applause, good idea and the MBA,s return to their crypts and the engineers are released.
    I suspect at the moment the MBA,s in Toyota are sharpening their pencils and the kelpie is rounding up the engineers prior to putting them back in the pen. Some will get neutered, some sold and few will be kept in case the price goes up but they won’t be at the management meetings and their car parks will be over with the assembly workers. Just sayin…🤔

    Question, will these engines have potential problems with carbon on the intake valves and races? If so how are they going to access and service them?
    Its enough of a problem for vee engines when the intakes are located in the vee and you can see what you're doing.

    My father always told me and my brother years ago to always wait at least 12 months before buying a new model car where hopefully they fix any defects in up and coming vehicle updates. Look at the early 200 series with their oil eating problems.

    This is similar to my strategy with the ladies. Find one that's not brand new, usually too expensive... Issue is, I only seem to get the high km's used ones.

    1HD and the VDJ are awesome engines. A bit lacking in the fuel economy but great engines nonetheless, I don’t think they will screw up the next on either.

      awesome engine and 1VD don't belong in the same sentence ever. PS J is just the chassis models. Cruisers "J", Hilux "N", Prado "Y" etc.
      1HD-T (90-93) were dog shit and more often than not, need the bottom end done by 80,000km. First gen 1VD-FTV drank more than a pirate at port and gave no power improvements. 2nd gen 1VD-FTTV got more power but still drank like there is no tomorrow. But the worst thing about the VD family is the utter pain in the ass to work on. Nothing is easy to get to.

    Could be like Honda's 1.5L Turbo Earth Dreams engine and its rollout in the USA. Oil dilution by gas (petrol) to where owners were finding their oil dipsticks showing over a quart higher than normal. Software changes and three years later not many living in the northern regions have complete confidence in it. Honda’s solution was to increase the engine warranty to 100k miles, IIRC. John is definitely on target with being very cautious here.

    John please consider doing a video on the new Toyota 2.5 Liter gas naturally aspirated Toyota 4 cylinder with its super complex systems.
    The engine has two fuel systems, variable zone cooling, an on-demand oil pump, and electrically driven camshafts all controlled with the computer that seems to be mounted on top of the engine to stay warm and cozy. Tick tick tick.

    I recall when Ford introduced the famous Barra engine and the reviews were initially negative. The Barra engine turned out to be one of the best engines. I agree with waiting a year or two before looking at the new V6.

Then how toxic it is the big clouds of white smoke that spew out the back during a dpf burn? Is it harmless vapour? Looks kind of like partially burnt diesel if you ask me.

    Toyota's cock ups continue, they've removed camber and caster adjustment from the new HiAce and it's front tyres are averaging 3-9 thousand KMs before needing replacement.
    It's that bad Bridgestone have run out of replacement oe tyres.
    Let's also not forget the Camry left pull that's existed since the sv21.

    Had a neighbor that to his farm, he bought a brand new LR Defender pickup. He was like a LR fanboy, and really wanted to enter the brand. After a short time...he had his pickup winched up to a van with a catastrophic failure in the gearbox, after towing some trailers like he did in his old Hilux LN106. Went to Toyota again...and never left.

      Land Rovers are tough, but they need to be driven with care, the constant 4WD system works great but it will not tolerate excess wheel slip at one axle while in the 'unlocked' position. That's why there's a big label ( at least on my ex military unit) warning 'engage center diff lock in off road conditions', making it just as evil handling as a Toyota Hilux when locked in 4WD. Land Rovers are far from perfect, but with correct servicing and use they are not as bad as people think. Well except for the electrics, and the diesel fuel system, and the cabin water proofing, and

      @@raygale4198 the TD5 seems a nice reliable engine. Some point the gearbox as the "weak point" on the last gen Defender, in an hard application as a working vehicle. Because Defenders as "mall crawlers", you see plenty around, working just fine.

      @@RogerM88 The last Defenders had Getrag 6 speed boxes, they should have been better than the earlier 1940's Jaguar design. The TDI 200 was the pinnacle of engine simplicity and fixability. The 300 TDI was the start of emission controls, the Ford Duratorq engines were a step backwards. The TD5 is a beautiful engine, but can become expensive with electronic gremlins due to age.

    How much more cooling capacity would be gained by increasing the size of the fan on the radiator - and increase flow? Or alternatively add a second fan on the opposite side of the cars' radiator? Just considering what is done with coolers on CPUs - more fans, bigger radiator surface areas by increasing the thickness or by making the radiator wider and taller. That said, could adding/bolting a fin stack off an engine block improve heat dissipation? Then it's Carnot cycle interference stuff...

      You need to liquid cool the vee or risk roasting the valve stem seals and anything else organic. BMW put heat shields on their N53. It still managed to cook the injectors

      @@biohyde6039 Ok imagine this, your vehicle has just lost ALL electrics, your power steering is out, you have a pump on the brakes before the vacuum starts to fade out and trying to do particularly a panic stop with a 4 disc braked vehicle with your puny foot pressure is out of the question, more so if granny is driving, you have no emergency brake because a jab on the computer controlled button is not going to work, you are now in an unstoppable unguided missile. look for something cheap to hit.

      @@adoreslaurel i'm pretty sure the brake pedal in my car works even with the engine off, unless the brake system is gone for some reason, but then that would mean parking brake is also gone, don't they use the same parts to brake?
      Also, I've never seen a vehicle loose all it's electric systems out of the blue while running, are we talking a explosion of an EMP device (or a nuke)?
      I always thought of the manual parking brake as of something jackases use to drift and generally behave like monkeys. I'd have to check if I can engage the electric parking brake with the car off.

    Honda fielded a hot vee, v10 on their first go around at F1. The exhaust pipes looked like a spaghetti nightmare. Blindingly fast, till they drop an exhaust valve, because of the heat issues you outlined. Aside from the thermo advantages, Honda were looking to narrow and better streamline the chassis. Interesting times in F1, bringing us the Tyrell 6 wheeler and Mclaren suction fan. Pointers to Toyotas’ next direction, perhaps?

    Toyota aside, try name a Euro 5 or 6 low emissions hi-po diesel peddler that has not had a teething issue with a new motor. Let someone else wear the early adopters pain. Even the ZD30 came good eventually. Complicated turbo setups, sensitive injectors, Byzantine emissions plumbing are all growing in complexity and risk as we skirt closer to the limits.

    My friend bought a Mazda BT-50 and had to buy an aftermarket suspension system after warranty replacement twice as he tows a caravan regularly. He says everyone has to do it with Mazda and Ford Ranger utes. Wouldn’t that make the vehicle not fit for purpose. He said the Mazda technician told him it is the most common warranty claim. The tech recommended an aftermarket brand to install , which he did. The problem went away.
