Obsidian Flames has great illustration rares in it. Pidgey, Cleffa, Pidgeot, and Gloom to name a few. I think Obsidian gets written off too quickly as a Charizard set and I'm happy I got to pick up so many great cards for so cheap.
Nah obsidian flames is hot trash
Love some of the hits in OF, the whole Pidgey evo line gets some 🔥illustrations
The obsidian flames AR's are great, it's the main set that's really lackluster. That and the lack of really good SIR's.
@@mhutch5082 maybe for value for opening packs, cheapest master set ever though buying singles
44 years old, never bought Pokemon TCG until I saw some of the 151 art… of course 151 was sold out so I got some Obsidian Flames to rip. The ETB and Promo card, and pulling the Gold ‘zard had me hooked! Probably 600 packa in to the hobby now, great content thanks for sharing!
Honarble mention goes to Elesa's Sparkle from Crown Zenith. So chuffed that i managed to master that beautiful set!
Just picked up a couple of these, 151 has some beautiful cards, that Nidoking and Poliwhirl are just around 10 now too....very tempting!
The Gardevoir trio is probably the highlight of this year for me. Beautiful story telling through Pokémon cards. The recent Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle Japanese Promos are strong contenders, too!
Agreed, hope to pick it up soon!
I have been blessed to pull a good and expensive lot of cards this past year since starting my collection. My favorite pull has been the Gholdengo EX. It was the only time I opened a set and got exactly what I wanted. My favorite cards are the Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot Illustration rares. Seeing these reminded me of when I was a kid playing Pokemon blue and catching a pidgey. After that I fell in love with Pokemon
I pulled the exact two cards from 151 that you showed off, haha! And I have to agree, they're gorgeous and so nice to look at. 2023 in general was a very busy year for the hobby but still so much fun! With the new pokemon generation, silver borders and a lot more illustration rares I am so happy to be in the hobby right now :) Thank you for this overview of the treasures that I have missed (crown zenith slipped by so fast!)
I am completing a 151 master set. I am new to the hobby but I now need about 40 reverse, just under 20 secret cards, the best buy bulbasaur promo and the squirtle poke-center promo, which is a pipe dream for now, lol.
Yup, nice selection of cards, very true about obsidian flames too
The 151 Pikachu is incredible. Great Card!
Thanks, I'm looking to pick up the Gardevior ex. Not so interested in the other cards at this time but this is a great list of amazing cards
Thanks Jake, always love your lists!
Lots of good cards from 2023 for under $20, but Celebrations is the king of all sets when it comes to that price point. Shining Magikarp, POP 5 Umbreon Gold Star, Birthday Pikachu, Base Set Blastoise and Venusaur, Mew EX, Rayquaza EX etc. Just such an outstanding set of gorgeous vintage reprint holos from 1999-2014. Those cards are next to start climbing in value in my opinion.
Just you wait until 2026 when they have their 30th anniversary
They are completely different kinds of sets, one is original art based on a classic pokemon set, the other is classic art based on original art, celebrations is rare art that most people would never get to see or hold. Massive difference, so different that it’s almost impossible to compare, imo
Generations is probably a realistic comparable for growth
@@TheBirdGroves I agree with that. Generations is its own set of unique arts that weren't very popular in 2016 at release, but with time and scarcity, people fell back in love with it, but the anniversary specialty set nature is very similar in structure to Celebrations, and anniversary sets do not stay cheap for long. As soon as the market gets any idea whatsoever that Celebrations is getting scarce, I think it'll double in value in weeks.
Nice list! I’ve pulled 6 of the cards listed, these are keepers
Great video as always jake thanks for the info
This year I had to buy the japanese Detective Pikachu promo card from the video game, I LOVE it!
Also, I've watch one of your videos a months ago and I bought the entire set of the XY promo gym badges and the 9 GG Pokémons in the forest from Crown Zenith (GG29 - GG34) and I don't regret those one bit! :D
Lucario Vstar promo from CZ ETB’s. Such an awesome binder card
Good list 🎉 i have 2 cards from this list 😄 2023 has been amazing for collecting, the tough bit has been choosing what to get within my budget, haha. i need to get that steelix, so cool!
That pikachu statue from celebrations is actually a card holder, a card in a card saver sleeve fits right in the VMAX flame halo
So many amazing cards, i own some of them and also the gold sinnoh legendaries from CZ. I love buying singles and getting artsets like the ralts/kirlia/gardevoir is still on my wishlist. Will get those soon hopefully 😊
Love videos like this, the ralts, kirlia and gardevoir set is amazing!
My personal favorite this year is the Poliwhirl Full Art from 151. I just picked myself up a 151 Elite Trainer box and got a handful of amazing cards. 🎉.. And im DEFINITELY gonna be finding that cute Charmander card 😂❤
Houndour & Scizor art cards from
obsidian flames have been my favorites!
Best pull for me this year has to be the Venusaur ex SAR, or pulling/buying the gardevoir SAR lol.
I had forgotten about that mewtwo promo, picked up a couple of copies and ordered a few of the charmanders as well.
This is a great list and shows how you can build an awesome collection on a budget. Love that Ninetales AR!
Some very good selections, Jake! I don't know that I would have changed much based on the parameters you defined aside from CZ. CZ is tough because there are so many awesome art works and most are within that $20 range.
nice selection!
Nice cards today! Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
I might actually want that AR, just because it has a Staraptor on the top right corner and its one of my favorite pokemons.
I only just got back into the hobby in the last few months so dont have a ton of exposure to 2023 as a whole, but I'll say 151 is an incredible set. Gen 1 just has so much nostalgic power that cant be denied. At least until the younger generations of pokemon enthusiasts get older and have more disposable income 😅
Happy holidays, Jake
The Miraidon ex alt art from SV Base is one of the best cards in SV and it’s under $20 now
my charmander came out the etb crimped sold it for more 😸
Those are some beautiful cards! Great video Jake
Going to japan tmrw, are there any japanese cards i should look at picking up? Deffo getting the pikacchu with the paldea starters! :)
Does it need to be the Japanese pikachu promo? I have the English one. That still counts right?
I think that the people who don't like scarlet and violet era are the loudest on social media. But if you ignore the few all caps posts that dis on it you'll find that it's a pretty well liked era overall so far. The artworks are beautiful and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for them. 151 was underprinted so it feels like a more popular set but really the artworks are not on par with the rest of SV era. It was a relatively small set and 151 has the nostalgia factor so I think it was fun to open, however, it doesn't have a lot of playable cards which is unfortunate. That said, I think every era should get the 151 treatment because it looks really cool in a binder when the pokemon and the set numbers go in numerical order.
I got most of those, that pikachu card is awesome, one of my favorites, im getting one graded.
Awesome cards!! 🔥🔥
you just exposed my entire ebay watchlist lol
I love how everyone is underestimating obsidian flames when pladean fates is coming out with its main card being a $300 charizard raw by the same artist
Good cards! Just bought the Mewtwo card
People are sleeping on MEW EX alt art promo from UPC, just 5$
You are one of my favorite Pokemon CZcamsr. Great content!
Awesome video Jake!😅😊
Sweet cards
Is the Japanese Pikachu SVP 001 Promo different than the SVP027 Promo?
Very cool video❤
That's a good list :-)
Can’t wait to see your top 10 cards!
That steelix looks good
no love for the cleffa in obsidian flames? that is better than the ninetales imo
I have not had that much luck with pulls. But just started collecting Hopefully my luck gets better LO. L.
How are the metal Mews only $4 on TCG Player? I get that grading them is impossible but how are these anything but $20+ on the low end in 2-3 years let alone 5-10.
The worst set for me was Crown Zenith. Bought 7 etbs, pikachu box, lugia box, 2 big tins, and some 3 pack blisters. All those packs and all I pulled were 3 secret rare Pikachu, gold Arceus, gold Giratina, and a shit load of lame duplicate. Despite being my worst set, gold Giratina was my best pull this year. Even got it graded in PSA 10.
They need to make a 3 starters full art tag team.
2022 was the year of opening for me and my wallet still has scars lol so for 2023 I decided to not open anything I buy 😅😢 it's was a long road and at the end of the year it's been hard to not open anything with all the amazing arts and sets . but looking forward to continuing my new sealed collection adventure. I hope one day it'll be as amazing as yours 😊
Good on you for fighting the good fight. Personally, i keep all my products sealed and simply buy singles. At 39, other than assuming I will wake up everyday, I have learned not to gamble, especially on opening pokemon.
Do you think 151 singles will drop in prize anytime soon?
The OF Charmander promo has my vote for promo card of the year. I absolutely love the art!
Such a great card!
Awesome video, thank you
I'm waiting on that Charmander Promo to get graded. I don't care if it's worth very much, I just love the artwork!
im doing the same thing, along with the pikachu card
Where did u see that mewtwo from the upc for $2?!
Tcgplayer for just a little above $2
Entei is one of my favorite pokemon, but damn that card looks derpy as hell. I refuse to buy it. Need to pick up that Suicune though.
What is everybody's most desired card(s) of 2023? It doesn't have to be expensive. My favorites are down to the 151 Squirtle and the CZ Suicune V.
Mew Jake, Mew.....
Jake… 🥺
Thank you for the holiday gift, happy to be part of the community! 😁
lets go!
Hi
Hoopa movie promo
Thanks for this, I decided to stop buying product and just buy singles. Need to save for a house.
Hey, I hear that Hololive music in the background. I see you 😉
Erika invitation is minimum of 20…😢
I do not understand why everyone is in love with 151. I also think there are more people holding 151 sealed product than open. The cards to me are boring, especially the SIR Charizard because he is so small on the card and its just all background art.
I go to Starbucks twice a week. I'm going to start buying a card instead, thanks to your comment!
It’s crazy that Mewtwo promo is $2 cuz I was selling those off for $15 for days just a month ago. Pokemon collectors really do pay out for the cards they want I guess!
First!
People will never admit, that 151 is THE set to grab because of Gen 1. Every store I'm at, 151 is always sold out unless you're at GameStop. Paldea Evolve and Paradox Rift are literally just sitting on shelves. All I'm saying, is consumers need to be more honest on what they want. Stop lying about the trend of these new Pokemon, because we all know they suck.💯
People only really care about gen1 and 2 pokemon even for kids. If they don’t re-release these every year the hobby will fizzle out.
im a Gen 1, Gen 2-er, but im not delusional enough to say 151 did not disappoint me
@@LifeIsPainx3 if u switch to pulling Japanese it will not disappoint with the pull rates or the quality. It’s the NA company that consistently screw up everything intentionally for the greed
Japanese 151 is the best set of the year by far.
@@LifeIsPainx3I’m curious, in what ways did 151 disappoint you?
151 is the first set that I try to get a masterset of. Just an amazing set 😍
