The Art of Trusting One's Self - The Philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • Emerson's combination of eastern and western philosophies provided a uniquely eclectic perspective for his time. Today, his ideas may seem to permeate the common place, which is only a testament to the influence his work had on the world at large. Agree with his ideas or not, his work is beautifully written and an appealing guiding light though self examination.

This came at the perfect time. After 28 years, I am finally beginning to learn to trust myself and it is taking me places and giving me good things. It feels so weird but feels so good. I've entered a new job, a new industry, I'm single, after nearly three years, and I am so happy to go on my OWN and enjoy my own presence. I also notice instead of doubting myself as default, I actively acknowledge negative thoughts and their presence but choose to remind myself that I CAN do that something. It feels weird, but it is refreshing.

This is one of the few channels I can watch now. I recently abandoned the whole self-improvement thing, as I realized it was causing more damage than good. This channel and a few others are an exception, and I can't explain in words why. It feels way more healthy and productive, helping us reach our truest selves, rather than improving for external factors like getting women or gaining a higher frame other others.

I agree, i myself abandoned that self-improvement thing. Most channels regarded as self-development/improvement constantly talk about how to get more confident, more productive, how to stand out etc...I believe this channel has more to offer in the sense that it provides us with true knowledge, philosophies, unfiltered and not trying to please anyone but rather sheer ideas to ponder in order to get to your own conclusions

Einzelganger - discusses philosophy and psychology
Academy of Ideas - as above but with more quotes, but still accessible
Russell Brand - discusses the 12 step programme, relationships, community etc
I feel these follow in a similar vein to this channel, in that they don't force you to do anything, just present ideas for you to think about. I would say they actually reinforced each other in a sense.

If you have time give a read, I also had written a similar essay once -"We have a natural obligation to the cosmos to express our own human experience and subjective reality of this world from our inner eye. The world exists for us and from us. Our consciousness is the way by which the universe experiences itself. Every human, shaped and moulded by the infinitely many elements of this cosmos, has something unique to present back to the cosmos, which is, the intangible multi-faceted human experience which can't be described by mere objective facts. It can only be described in the invisible interaction of the words, human emotions, sounds, colours, their texture, structure and flow in every person's artistic self-expression. The selection of words, the arrangement of words, the visualisation created by them, the storytelling, all are unique to the author and subconsciously places us in the author's mind for the moment. The composition of colours, the technique, the aesthetics, the way the lines, shapes and surroundings meet represents a subliminal message from the artist, both consciously and subconsciously. This subtle aspect of personal touch can never be taken away from the creator even when his work can be replicated or reproduced in other aspects. Every story ever written, represents something about the writer themselves. Every art ever created is a peek into the creator's soul. In a general sense, everyday, the world we surround ourselves with, is a reflection of the values and self-expression of all the beings who have interacted with it. No matter how much we avoid, inevitably we ingrain our inimitable beliefs, values and ourselves into the work that we do everyday. So it's important that we turn this interaction into voluntary means to project ourselves. Thus, everyone capable should find their suitable form of self-expression to document their own original viewpoint of this world. In this plethora of human creativity, everyone might not connect to our art but it is our duty towards the some that do."

This is kind of amazing to me... Over the course of my life I have had very similar ideas to the ones expressed in this video, but I always felt as if they were 'too crazy' or somehow just unproductive and so I pushed them away. Only lately have I realized just how ingrained it is in us in most modern societies to forget about what's *really* important in life (and most importantly to ourselves), so I started writing my ideas down. Trusting they were good, and even if they were wrong I was putting forth a perspective that I _accepted_ could be wrong-it was freeing. To see this, after just recently finally starting to truly trust myself, really means the world.

This really speaks to me. Life was so beautiful to me when I was younger. I was carefree and I was brilliant. I knew I didn't really understand the world but I didn't care, I leaned into it. But as I became a teenager I had to cope with a lot of trauma and mental illness and I threw myself into religion. I started to care a lot and messing up was never an option. I've become so consumed with perfection and understanding everything in its entirety that I spend all my time hidden away in my room. The world isn't beautiful anymore, it's terrifying. Everything that I used to do so easily is so hard now. Everything that I used to love is so meaningless. It's like I've had who I am taken away from me. I don't even know how to be that person anymore, so how can I rely on them? I think I just need to convince myself that its ok to be that person again, that its ok not to care, that its ok to live for my own enjoyment. Once I manage to do that I think the mask I can't remove will melt away. I think this video helped. Thanks.

Favorite by far. I’m here because of his quote, “The salvation of mankind depends upon independent thinkers directing their thoughts rightly.” I believe we all have something special within us to bring to the world, and living as something or someone else, hinders us from fully giving that gift to others. Many of us don’t fully realize ourselves and express ourselves because of stupid constraints and reasonings. The reality is by limiting ourselves we are living untruthfully, and that is never rewarded. Stop being a victim of the outside and take control on the inside. Another piece of work that comes to mind is The stranger by Albert Camus. It tells the story of a man who is truthful to himself till the end. Truthful, even if it brings him death. As to live in lie and deception is not a way to live at all.

Oh..Thank you...this is exactly what I used to feel since I was 18 years of age....I have been searching ever since and Emerson's own life stands as an example of the realization of Truth in this Universe...the 'Oneness' never confines to any church or Temple on this good earth ..but remaining silent and sensing Nature brings us close to the Universe and not to this Earth alone...when you can see the pulse of the universe in every object out here and sensing the part of it in our own body...God so true...and I find my peace in the Power of Oneness and for me ,I find its perfection in Christ...but again I say that it may vary from person to person where one can sense this Oneness in their own Beliefs...I'm never against any belief ...but would like to assert the Truth that when one finds this Oneness ...it is their truth to attain peace...for example an artist may find Oneness in his work...so God or the Universal Oneness is his work of Art...like wise...Blessed be your Beautiful Soul ,dear Emerson ...Love your outlooks so much ...which gave me life to my soul....Blessed be you in the Heavens too dear Emerson..

I'm a faithful believer in the God of Islam despite not being educated this way and I could relate so much on Ralph's way of thinking (and therefore living). What I do wanna point out is that I've started to know and love God so much when I started to trust myself and stop trusting others. I don't share the same views as most so called believers though. The difficult part in life for people like me is that you do tend to trust people you love, but reality is that they are as lost as you when it comes to how to live your life ... Sooo .. Have at least the intention to know God, and when you'll be ready to follow the path He built for you, trust yourself. As you are part of Him, knowing and trusting God comes with knowing and trusting the part of you first. Unfortunately, isolation is key to let your consciousness speak from within.

If I had to pick one writer who shaped my thinking more than any other it would be Emerson, along with his compadres, Whitman and Thoreau. He’s so eminently quotable and here are my Top 10 favourites of his:
    1. *Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.*
    2. *Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.*
    3. *It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.*
    4. *Once you make a decision, the Universe conspires to make it happen*
    5. *Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.*
    6. *A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day.*
    7. *You become what you think about all day long.*
    8. *The good news is that the moment you decide that what you know is more important than what you have been taught to believe, you will have shifted gears in your quest for abundance. Success comes from within, not from without.*
    9. *Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.*
    10. *There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried.*
Like the stars ✨ in the firmament there are countless others, but perhaps I should end with this, thereby not taking Emerson’s advice: *I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.*

And every phenomena is phenomena in consciousness which nature is emptiness and space. He didn't answer what is 'person', what's the feeling of the self we have. Or did he? He was a great thinker and had a positive impact on people for sure.

It is also extremely similar to stoicism from the ancient greeks and early romans as well. Marcus Aurelius spoke it's core beliefs in the book "Meditations" which he wrote as a guide for his own life at the time he was a roman emperor close to 2,000 years ago. He teaches how to live in according to nature and that the nature of self and the nature of the whole cosmos is one entity and that there is no true seperation in i and other, and he also wrote on how to truly be in the infinite present moment along with simple broken down philosophical guidelines to life. It reminds me heavily of what modern philosophers like Eckhart Tolle speak. I think it's such a natural state to be in when you have those ego-shattering moments and can be so profound that perhaps that's why it's at the core of so many ancient religions and philosophies.

It is interesting how many parallels there are between Eastern and Western thought when you stop and think about it. From Hellenistic schools such as Stoicism and Skepticism to more modern things like Existential Phenomenology, you can find many similarities with Eastern philosophy. Perhaps they would be more so had the West remained polytheistic? Though, even Christianity has a lot in common with figures in Hinduism like Krishna. Western thinkers in the 1800s like Emerson, Thoreau, and Schopenhauer were all great admirers of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, etc. I'm not sure how much further back in time you can go and find evidence of them reading faithful translations of complete texts from the East, but some degree of back and forth influence has to go back into ancient times. Of course, there are slightly more fringe theories such as Buddhist influence on Jesus or the Skeptics and the like. At the very least, there are probably some Indo-European cultural roots that produced some similar philosophies, and these regions were connected by major civilizations in the Middle East from antiquity to today. Despite our superficial differences, human beings are more alike than we are different, and the global exchange of ideas continues to this day. Learn from whoever you can!
