What Happened to 2D Mario Games?

- Super mario bros is one of nintendo's best selling franchises, selling millions of copies across several games. It clearly generates Nintendo a lot of money, so why don’t they make a new one? The best we’ve got right now is new super mario bros u deluxe, which is almost four years old now, and even that was a port of new super mario bros on the wii u, making technically over a decade years old. Why haven’t they released a new one?
Some people believe that mario maker is going to replace the series. It makes sense! but i have a few issues with it. I understand that theres the argument that maybe the company has struggled with inniovating for a title with so many previous versions much like some other games cough (show fifa), and that mario maker solves this problem for them, as they leave the work to the customers to make levels for them! This would be clever as it kind of allows new levels to be made forever, so it makes sense that they would consider this for the future of the series, however this option is limiting. Yes, you can make a near infinite amount of games, but theyre set within the boundaries of the maker. the player cant introduce new items or mechanics or anything without nintendo making a new title. Also, these levels just dont have the same nintendo charm as the ones actually made by nintendo, which have their own unique features and personality to them (show water bubble and painting level).
Personally, i believe mario maker and mario bros can coexist, and thats what theyve been doing, albeit with as a somewhat dated new super mario bros game, being new Super Mario Bros U Deluxe

This release is interesting. The common nintendo fan would have seen this at face value with typical nintendo releaseing YET ANOTHER port of a wii u game. However, if you look at it from the company's standpoint, it’s quite diffent. Sure, it’s an easy way to make money and might be enough for them for now, but they may have also been testing how much people would want a new 2d mario. The reason i say this if because they did the exact same thing with pikmin 3 deluxe. They released that game to see how successful it would be before announcing pikmin 4 in a direct.
On one hand, the improvements over generations may have gotten smaller because it’s become harder to innovate, or because the jumps in technology haven’t been as big anymore
On the other hand, it should be easier to innovate nowadays as there’s almost no limit to what you can make in a game.
I think the easiest thing to change will be the art style. With modern technology, it would be easy for them to do a 3D-2D platformer type style. We’ve already seen it in Mario maker 2 with the 3D world theme, having 3D characters and levels, while also still being a 2d sidescroller to create a new sense of immersion. This would be really cool to see, and I think this alone will be worth a new game.
as fore new mechanics, weve seen them introduce walljumps, triple jumps, and groundpounds in the past, so i think it would be cool if they introduced some other moves from 3d mario games, like the long jump! i could see myself using this a lot, along with some other moves like the mid-air roll and the somersault. Little things like this really are the icing on the cake to a goo game in my opinion. I think it can be seen best in 3d world + bowsers fury. It all just feels so smooth and satisfying doing all these tricks around the place.
So, to sum up, i dont think the series is going anywhere anytime soon, and i dont think that mario maker is here to replace it. Considering its been so long since a new one, and considering the past several entries have been pretty unoriginal, i believe that we are due a big shake-up in the series. It will be interesting to see what they come up with

Nowadays2d Mario is repetitive.Overuse of the same world themes and koopalings as bosses.If they ever come out with something new I hope they can revamp it to make something different

They’ve been making tweets(JP) about hiring 2D level designers that contain images of past 2D Mario (&Yoshi) games. I’m sure somethings happening, I doubt they’re using such images to hire people to work on a completely different game.
There are rumors that there will be a new one announced this February. It will supposedly linked with the movie, with its artstyle and probably more things.

Nintendo should really consider reaching out to their community and fans for help towards a new 2D Mario game. Just look at the "Newer Team," for example. They have made some incredible and unique things in their ROM hacks for NSMB.WII and NSMB2, with new enemies, bosses, level design, world design, and music!

I have a true 100% file on every NSMB Game. Beaten NSMBU and NSLU about 5+ times true 100%. (Throughout 2 Wii U versions, and the port on Switch.) I hope they finally make another one one day.

I think an open ended 2D Mario with seem-less level transitions like the Ori games and a graphical style like Wario Land Shake it would bode very well for this game. Imagine a 2D mario where instead of grassy planes for the opening level it is New Donk City. Whatever they end up doing one thing is clear; they need to turn the formula on it’s head

2D Mario will surely come back because it’s too important. But I hope they will come up with a new and beautiful art style this time around.
I think they would modernise the NSMB series first before doing leap in the franchise. The art style won’t be stylised since Nintendo haven’t done it for the series. In addition, other stylised game exist already like Yoshi and Kirby. Therefore, I think a 3D world like art style is more likely and for the better, just like you said. For move wise, they can port all move from 3D world like long jumps and backflip(sideflip won’t be there since Nintendo haven’t brother to add it in maker 2). Let me talk about the gameplay, I think 3D like spin may come eventually, but not the next game. New power up like the poison flower or super bone might get introduce. You can use the super bone to turn Mario into dog Mario, it can let Mario walk on ceilings and comes with a wipe attack. Another one is the poison flower, it let Mario shoot poison ball that make emeries became poisoned and not exist after a while, the average is you can attack a bunch of emeries before the ball runs out. 100 coins now grant a life and a power up to make coins worthwhile. The life system only let you store 9 life and only reset star coin instead of level progress as a trade off. Each world of the game have a similar theme to NSMBU with a twist, like a red desert or a fall forest. The power up storing system would now have item number instead of slot like Bowser’s Fury and can have 1 power up that can be brought to the level as well as for storing power-up collected.(A mix of SMB3 and SMW system) More emeries will be returned and introduced like shy guy(You can pick up them unlike goombas and can be thrown or the goo loomba(replaced goombas in the later level), they can be picked up. Not to mention the spin jump from NSMBWii and 3D world both returns, with the 3D world one renamed to charged spin jump to avoid confusion to the NSMB spin jump and can spin in mid-air if you twirl while pressing up. For lack of difficulty, Mario should always be accessible, they should have the same difficulty as NSMBU, bring back special remixed level for 3D land so more experienced player can have a better experience. Also they can also make some world map have more branching path each level like Mario world, maybe add the switches back to the level. A forest, cloud, desert and snow theme works really well with that. However, the beach, grass and mountain theme can keep the nsmb styled ones. So it can have more variety.
NSMBU already has 3d characters and enemies, it's been like this since NSMBwii

Yeahhh, I agree. Imo, Mario maker was in development for like 2 or 4 years before release in 2015, and 4 years later, we got smm2. and it’s been almost 4 and a half years since the release of smm2 and I have high potential that we’re gonna get “somewhat” of a 2d Mario platforming game of some sort this year, I hope.

I would love it if the next game takes a step back and taking more of a 16bit approach and call it RSMB (retro super Mario brothers) it could have the graphics style and music as the older Mario games but still have stuff like wall jump and ground pound. I could also see this manage to not get repetitive and make new graphics for every new game and not limiting it to the same every time

For me the 2 big ones would be movement options from the 3D games and powerups from galaxy 1 and 2 or a bunch of new ones (instead of 1 new one that basically is the whole selling point like we've been getting).
I really like how the older 2d games all take place in different kingdoms. Nintendo should stop doing the same predictable 8 worlds for each game

Mario Maker 2's nintendo level designs for the campaign are as good or even better than the ones in the nsmb games so I'd say they're a good replacement of the new series

The 3D games may be more loved and the NSMB series may of had its flaws, but a nice simple Mario title is enjoyable every couple of years.
After Mario 64, they stopped making the 2D games because 3D was the new hotness. Then people started to really miss the 2D games, so they made New Super Mario Bros, which was a big success. Then, with New Super Mario Bros after New Super Mario Bros, people started to become tired of the 2D games, thinking they were all the same, and actually MISSED the 3D collectathon type game of Mario 64. So then they stopped making the 2D games again because people were tired of them. It’s highly possible that people will once again start to miss 2D Mario and the cycle will continue going around.
I am 200% sure that this won't happen, but hear me out: 2D Mario in a Metroidvania world. Don't know if it could work but I want it

Most games nowadays go for the open world style with hidden secrets around every corner. Don’t get me wrong, those are some really good games. But I’m more of a simple man. I want games that give you a nice resting place and a good checkpoint to pause the game for a while so that you can pick it up later. But other open world games always make you do something. There’s always gonna be a new task or something new for you to do, and they always have you on your toes to where you just can’t put the game down. Super Mario Maker 2 is fun and I love the world maker feature. Super Mario Maker was pretty much what everyone wished for. Being able to make your own levels and worlds in a 2D Mario game is something that many people wish to do. Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is a big example, as well as plenty of Kaizo hacks. Super Mario Maker was just an easier way for people to make their own Mario levels & games. Unlike some mods that people have made that take over 2 years to make and always end up getting canceled. But I still want official Nintendo levels to play with friends and always have a good spot to pause. Because unlike SMM2, Nintendo-made levels are actually properly made.

Yeah it seems like they've been focusing on spin-offs a lot lately, which I'm happy with, but it would be cool to see a new mainline Mario game
i just think 2D mario and even 2D zelda to some extent have kind of served their purposes. they kinda perfected the formula of those games and audiences back then didnt really jive with them anymore. while i do miss 2D mario ALOT i do think the legacy it left behind was a pretty damn solid one too

90% of Mario Maker levels I play are absolute trash. Very rarely I find a decently made level. But even so most levels aren’t suited for more than one player.

The only thing I wish for A New NSMB game is that they change the bosses. I either want the koopalings to be a world 8 gauntlet or the castle boss.
The towers need to change ASAP. They can’t keep reusing the same mini boss multiple times. We need more brand new bosses like DS.
I still can’t believe Nintendo only threw in Boss Sumo Bro as the only completely new boss fight in a game where 85% of the rest of the fights are reused.

I really miss the 2D Mario games. I love Mario maker but in a way MM killed 2D Mario. Technically the last new 2D Mario Bros. game came out in 2012. Then MM came out in 2015. Since then we haven’t gotten another SMB game. And NSMBDeluxe doesn’t count as a new SMB game
In a way it has, but I don't expect it to stay that way. NSMBU Deluxe has sold nearly twice that of Mario Maker 2. An original 2D game could massive numbers.

Something I’d love to see in a new 2D super Mario game would be online support.
You can already play with friends in the current one, but you have to do it on the same console. I think it would be cool to have an online option!
I just hope that they’d wait to do it on the next Nintendo console, though. The switch is very underpowered and the online for the switch is awful.
I would love online support, if they can do it in mario maker 2 then they can do it in a mainline 2d mario. (hopefully it wouldn't be as laggy tho)
