    I STILL remember in 1st grade. I hadn't been diagnosed with dyslexia or ADHD, but I couldn't keep up with all of the writing we had to do. I remember the teacher said, "if you don't finish writing in time, you cannot go out to recess". I was so panicked!! I couldn't finish but wanted to be done so bad. So....when she said for everyone to turn in what we were writing, I went up to her desk, erased my name from my paper and put it in the pile. I then erased someone else's name from their paper and put my name on it. Of course....my handwriting was EXTREMELY faint (always got in trouble for that) and not good looking. So before we went outside she saw it and I still had to stay inside. Moral of the story....learn someone else's handwriting so you can change their name and the teacher can't tell. haha jk. Fortunately I made better choices after that incident.

I have also dysgraphia (I use T9 for this answer to correct my spelling) Well, I from the Czech Republic and when I visited my primary school, I had also special subject to minimize my problems (and it was also fun for me) You should speak about it with your teachers. They can help you, especially your language's teacher, but also another teachers can give you more time and so,... For example: I had more time to write my Maturita's essays (in Czech and in German).

When I looked at other kids papers I saw how much they could write compared to me. Btw I am no cheat and I have never cheated before. I've never been the best when it came to drawings, sometimes often have trouble spelling especially long words too. My problem is my words are hard to read, can be too big on the lines and definitely have trouble keeping them placed leveled on the same sentence. My grammar has gotten alot better over the years like mastering capitals, Camas, apostrophes and punctuation. My spelling I still have trouble with, but with the use of computers and smartphones thank God make things so much easier. My drawing skills on the other hand just completely make my goals on always wanting to be (for example) an animator, feel impossible. But who said it was? I'm hoping in the future I can master it with practice. I was never diagnosed, nor know whether or not I've got disgraphia going on, but this seems just about right after looking up some images of disgraphic hand writing. What I know for a fact is most likely I'm OCD. I'm always getting frustrated when having to write long stories on school or such places with long paper work and not online, so I'm arguing with myself in my head to where I'm erasing and rewriting and erasing and rewriting. It takes alot of time away from me doing that too.

    I’m 26 now and have always had this condition except never diagnosed as a child. I didn’t have learning issues in any other areas other than handwriting. I had handwriting classes for hours, the whole lot but still even as an adult when I write by hand I can barely read my own writing. I also have no issues with spelling, grammar and sentence structure. When writing though without noticing I miss letters when spelling, write words out of order etc. I was punished as a child for my writing but have been fortunate as an adult in this age that I barely need to handwrite anything. All my work is done on a computer and I have no issue typing. When I have to fill out a form and I have no one with me to write for me it gives me so much anxiety still

    I didn't mirror letters, but had very horrible handwriting and cursive as a child...
    Printing and writing often cramped.my hand and felt laborious.
    Until I started writing in my other language, French, around age 11. For some reason, when I wrote in French, it came out much, much nicer,
    and over time, I was able to make my English writing look like my French.
    I don't know if it had to do with how I mentally processed or felt about the two languages or what;
    It was very strange.

      Same! Also, love the name! One year I had a BITCH OF AN ENGLISH TEACHER that didn't use ANYTHING to check spelling or anything for paper reviews and went with her "gut"! I wrote the most brilliant thing in my school career, but she had ONE ISSUE! She did NOT recognize one, semi-dated, but NOT fully phased out word in English celled "unbeknownst"! I had a feeling she might have issues with my paper, the typical lack of ideas, dysgraphia "word vomit/gobbledygook", etcetera, but THAT WAS HER ONLY ONE! Claimed, I used a "Made up word, giving me a ZERO FOR IT, and if I did NOT REWRITE EVERYTHING I WOULD FAIL SPRING FINALS!" Well, unbeknownst to her, I had a contingency due to how she was! I secretly printed two copies and of course she wouldn't have known better, grabbed my bag (which wasn't allowed in the PC room during exams shoved in an extra copy while she wasn't looking and shoved my backpack so close to my desk (it was old, so I didn't care if it got dirty!), no one would know! I was so furious that I I some how was able to keep my cool and say, "Yes, Ms. Turner, I'll redo it!" Without going ballistic and just a heavy, annoyed sigh! Luckily, I was given the marked copy back and so my, "This lady needs her brain checked feelings!", that would NOT go away had more leverage! I say "leverage", since after English was lunch, while I was thankful that it was NOT DUE TO OVERALL INCOHERENCE OF MY WORK, technically in a way it was as the word was 2 or 3 lines into the 3rd or 4th page of the 6 page essay! So, I skipped lunch and headed to the principal that actually burst out laughing about it! She grabbed her dictionary, thesaurus, pulled up the two word processing programs we had at the time and the search engine! All with it coming up as a word! My next class was an elective or gym, sadly I think it was woodshop and it was the ONE CLASS I loved more than any other I have ever taken! They brought me what ever food they could scrounge up from the cafeteria, thankfully it was a PB&J, apple and milk, so it helped keep me a bit quite, and called her in! As the principal was her senior, she could NOT ignore her about this and was proved WRONG! I was called back in and she was "made to apologize"! She kept side eyeing me for the rest of the year! Next year, I heard a rumor a teacher had "left/ been fired" and I didn't see her again! Honestly though, if you teach ANYTHING, (especially English!), and are unsure of a word that is used, THEN USE THE FUCKING DICTIONARY! That is what ANY SANE PERSON would do!

    Learning to type is the GREATEST thing ever. I am terrible at writing on paper. My handwriting is bad (according to my sign artist wife) and I have to put things in different areas, as a rough draft, then I add and organize everything as needed. Typing makes this process SO much faster. I can easily go down a few lines, add a thought or sentence...then I can put it all together in one large paper/thought/idea. I actually have dyslexia and ADHD, and not sure about dysgraphia. I remember when I was in college, I wrote a late night essay and turned it in around 5am. I went to class at 9am and my teacher asked me to review it before she grades it. I looked at it and though I still had my ideas of what it should have said, my essay looked like a rough draft. It was TERRIBLE. Perhaps because of fatigue...but I have never written such a horrible paper! So I added everything I somehow forgot to add the first time and got an A or B on the paper.
    On another note, I remember I was in a business speech class. We had to stand in front of the class and speak about a company for exactly 7 minutes. I chose Samsung because I had recently returned from living a year in South Korea (where everyone wanted and loved to speak English because it was their chance to use what they had learned in schools). I decided to "time" the slides with my speech instead of using the clicker (only using cards that each had 2 or 3 words on them) because that perfected the 7 minutes. It worked perfectly, except for 1 hiccup that I corrected by talking REALLY fast to catch up. Unfortunately I got a B because I had forgotten that we were supposed to submit the speech and slides a day before we were to speak (instant -10 points). :/ Overall I was a C average anyway. :) I graduated with a BBA in Marketing.

    Its nice to read some comments here, as my child is 9 and struggles with writing, but is really bright, smart and reads very well. When i did a review before my home ed officer came to visit us end of this school year, i could see my child has made little progress with her writing, punctuation is not there at all, and she struggles and tires. She writes neat after trying so hard but cant spell so much and writes back to front, upside down in cases. She can read so she sees when its not right.
    I looked up what might be the problem as theres some slow and difficulties she has doing certain things, so i put 2 and 2 together and found this disorder.
    Its helpful to know there are things that can be done to relieve some of the frustration. But home schooling has made this less frustrating. I could only imagine how hard this would make her life in school with those who dont understand what this is.

    I haven’t been diagnosed with anything but I have always been a lot slower than everyone else in my class and how i kept my grades up is taking all the work i couldn’t finish in that amount of time and stay up past midnight to finish and breakdown crying when i couldn’t finish t because i was so scared that the teachers would yell at me and start panicking and go to bed being so stressed. In 6th grade i stopped having so much homework because most of the time we just did notes in class or things in groups. But there were still problems, I would either get distracted, overwhelmed, or couldn’t keep up when writing because i was so slow when we did notes and i was also slow doing things with others and id space out when we were doing something because i didn’t talk much and when i tried to help out i just looked stupid because i was slower than then when doing things. Then during test and there were writing questions i took a long time because i kept rewriting because it was hard to put what was in my head into a sentence and onto paper. I did pass though with good grades, I did get a c in math because i’m terrible at it but i mama begs to get it to a b. In 7th grade my grades began to flop because i had attention problems in math and it felt like the teacher was going too fast and i couldn’t keep up with the notes even though everyone else seemed to be just as fast but i took forever. I barley last 7th grade and now i’m in 8th grade and i’m failing computer class because we do step by steps and i usually get behind and i’m too scared to speak up to ask a question because i don’t want everyone else to think i’m stupid. Sometimes the meetings are recorded but i can’t find the motivation to do them, but that’s just my fault because i’m lazy. I find it difficult to sleep because i even when i’m tired sometimes i just can’t fall asleep then i’ll get worried about random things and that will keep me up all night and then i’ll fall asleep during meetings so that’s not good. Ok let’s rewind a bit, in 5th grade i started playing with people online and i’d always get corrected for my spelling. I never payed attention to my spelling the more and more people point it out I start to realize how bad i am at spelling. I’m always getting corrected by my online friends still and i have just came to the conclusion that i’m stupid and poking fun at myself is the best way to not get hurt by t even though it hurts a lot. I used to get good grades but now i feel like a failure and that i disappointed everyone and myself. I do realize there are other problems in the world but it hurts

      What you're saying is also ringing potential dyslexia and potential ADHD bells as well, and possibly others. You are not stupid. You are not lazy. It sounds like there's a lot going on under the surface that needs answers and appropriate accommodations. So if you haven't already, talk to your parents, let them know what's going on so they can get you tested.

    I had a test for this at university and did basically an IQ test where I scored quite above average and some other tests including spelling and verbal communication where I scored very highly but my handwriting was way below average and was diagnosed with dysgraphia and now I get extra time if I have to handwrite a test and not if I can type it. Is this normal for people with dysgraphia

    • @SnowySpiritRuby
      @SnowySpiritRuby Před 2 lety +2

      I don't know about the testing part, but it always takes me forever to handwrite something if someone else is going to need to be able to read it, because writing neatly takes me forever and is exhausting (and also really hurts my wrist - I partially dislocated it in 9th grade and it has never been the same since). Also don't know about extra time specifically for it, though it makes perfect sense. I've never been diagnosed with it, but I'm 99.99999% sure I have it (I could never hold the pencil "correctly" ever since kindergarten, and my handwriting has always been messy ever since 1st grade, despite always being an excellent speller and never having trouble forming letters), and the tipping point for me came when I was in college: for one of our finals, we had to hand write a full 6-page essay... in pen...; I managed to do it, but my professor couldn't read a single word of it (he ended up having me type it up for him), so from then on I was allowed to type up long answer and essay questions on a computer.

    What do you call the opposite of dysgraphia? I can express my self better, more clearly, and more thoroughly when I'm writing than when I'm talking. When I talk I tend to lose track of where I'm trying to go with the conversation. I do have to concentrate very hard to write with a pen rather than typing though and my typing is faster, but not very accurate.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby
      @SnowySpiritRuby Před 2 lety +1

      I'm the same (express myself better in writing than solely talking), but I still consider myself to have dysgraphia because my handwriting still sucks, even though I've been trying to work on it ever since 1st grade (I'm a few years past grad school now), but it was never diagnosed so I never got the help I needed, and when I did have to turn in handwritten work, it took me a really long time to write it because in order for it to be neat enough for the teacher/professor to read it, it takes me forever to write. All I can say is "thank goodness for computers" - had to handwrite one of my long essays in high school, and there ended up being several lines just whited out on one page because it's basically impossible to edit more than a word or two when writing on paper with pen without it looking like you edited. My typing isn't always accurate, either, but it's still far faster for me to do and easier for other people to read, so the editing time I have to take is worth it for me (one of my finals in college, the professor told us we had to handwrite a full essay in pen - he got quite a nasty shock when he came to mine and couldn't read a single word of it, because my handwriting was so bad; he ended up having me type it up, and from then on, I was allowed to use a computer to do long answer and essay questions on my midterms and finals, which saved my poor wrist big time, and cut the writing time almost in half because I was no longer having to take time whiting out or erasing a ton).

      Me, too! My sister has always teased me for it, and I remember back in 1st and 2nd grade (I was homeschooled 3rd-6th) when my teachers had us fill out the sheet of what we were going to work on during the semester, my mom always made me put "neatness" (meaning with regards to handwriting) because she thought I didn't try hard enough, when in fact, based on everything I've read in the last couple years, I'm now 99.99999% sure I actually have been dealing with dysgraphia to some extent ever since kindergarten (I could never hold the pencil the way the pencil grip tried to make me) and it never got caught because it's not as severe as some sources make it out to be (I've always been an excellent speller and never had trouble forming letters, so some of the apparently common causes of dysgraphia don't apply to me; I can also keep my lines of writing straight on lined paper, but on unlined paper it goes up and down and up and down). I can write really neat if I really try really really hard, but it's exhausting and it takes absolutely forever because the only way I can do it is to write super small, so if I have to turn in handwritten work, I only go so far as to make sure that I myself can read it (I often can't read my own writing) and call it good enough; even if I'm writing at my normal pace, it's still slower than "normal". If someone else is going to be reading my handwriting, I generally will - if I have the option - type it instead, because 1) it's just plain faster, 2) I can edit it super easily if I make a mistake or want to move words around, and 3) it's guaranteed to be legible no matter who's reading it (one of my college professors got a nasty shock when I turned in my final to him junior year - one of the things on it was we had to hand write an essay, in pen... yeah, he couldn't read a single word of mine, so he had me type it up for him, and I immediately sent an email off to my disability services coordinator at school to request to be allowed to use a computer for long answer questions and essays for midterms and finals in the future, which was promptly granted).

      @@SnowySpiritRuby Thank You for sharing. I didn't think I'd ever get any responses to this. I have always had trouble writing and I often misread things and wind up making a fool of myself. There is a really good video on here about dysgraphia. This woman talks about growing up with it and everything she talked about I could relate 💯. I can't remember the name of it offhand. The thing that makes me mad is because we are not officially diagnosed with it. People will say you don't have it. You're self diagnosing. Well, I can't afford to get a diagnosis of it, and even if I could? Now it wouldn't do me any good, as I'm too old now to have this corrected. But like you. I too am 99.99999% I have it. @@ITIsFunnyDamnIT You're very welcome. I had been over on How To ADHD's channel, and something in one of her videos I was watching prompted me to look for videos on dysgraphia, and this just happened to be one of them.
      Yeah, it's probably too late for me to try to fix it, too (I'm already a few years past grad school, and all the interventions I've read/heard about so far are all aimed at grade school kids), so on the rare occasions when it's absolutely necessary for it to be both legible and handwritten, I take the time to do my best (filling out checks and medical forms is honestly the majority of the handwriting I have to do, so not a lot at once - didn't have many tests in grad school that I had to hand write long answers for), and when it's not, either I don't care or I type it.
      I'm now suspecting the reason my right hand and wrist hurt/cramp up when trying to write a lot, fast, or neatly, is due to more than just the fact that I partially dislocated my right wrist in 9th grade and it has never been the same since (I think I might have re-subluxed it by taking notes during my most recent first responder training course back in August, from writing an average of five or six 8.5"x11" pages of notes everyday for 9 days, because by the end of the second day it hurt so bad that I couldn't write without my wrist brace on).

    When I was in primary, I had always a horrible handwriting, and I had this horrible "old school" teacher named Thelma that always was tormenting me for that by scolding me for having such an ugly handwriting, and tryin to make all our classes going on her rythm and with a nice handwriting (All of us being 2° freaking grade students), So, it was physically painful for me trying to keep her pace, because I really struggled with handwriting and on top of that I had to do it FAST.
    Worst of all.
    I was labeled as "a brilliant girl" because I had a higher than average IQ, so this teacher thought I just wasn't "trying hard enough". This woman really had an obsession on handwriting.
    Daily humiliation for me at school.
    I was so relieved when the next years I had other teachers!!
    They always were like "Try to improve your handwriting", but they didn't forced me to write fast or used the methods that Thelma used, so I was content with them.
    Curiously, I developed myself as a good artist, but my handwriting was still ugly.
    It was until 6 grade when a classmate noticed that my mistake was that I made the strokes in the opposite direction when writing (not mirrored letters), and pointed it out to my 6° grade teacher... then my 6°th grade teacher told me to try to do the strokes in the other way, "Since you are good at drawing, try to not write the letters, just draw them" and my handwriting started to improve.
    My handwriting improved A LOT in middle school, where no teache told me a thing about my handwriting.
    I'm still slower than other at writing, and my hand still cramps when writing, but at least I don't have to write by hand on a daily basis. (Thank God for the computers)
    I still hate writing by hand since my hand cramps when writing long texts or for prolonged periods of time by hand.
    But I love drawing (and I do it very well)

      Very sorry this reply is late. But to answer your question it is said that most people who have dyslexia also have one or more other learning disability's.
      I have dyslexia and had a very difficult time in school but I never knew about dysgraphia until last week (and I am 48). I just thought my hand writing was sloppy and that's all there was to it.
      I downloaded an audiobook called Understanding Dyslexia by The Center for Excellence and this has been eye-opening for me, and I have lived with these conditions for a long time.
      So yes, if someone has dysgraphia there is a good chance they have something else too. I do and this book will discuss all of those issues. I highly recommend it.

    Where does dysgraphia and dyslexia separate? This seems to cross over with dyslexia a lot…. Urgh! I’m confused!
    I’m already diagnosed dyslexic, dyspraxic and handing dyscalculia. This is too much man I have too many labels. Need something like autism spectrum but a dyslexi spectrum or something….
    I was told dysgraphia is about accuracy of using a pen not getting mixed up with writing direction and forgetting what letter you’re writing mid letter. I do all that but I just assume it’s dyslexia? Like forms are impossible if I’m not misspelling it I’m randomly writing the wrong letter or crossing L like it’s a t, forget what way around 5 and 7 are. Often forget what letter I’m writing mid letter, like make N a M, write e for a, or just not even write a letter at all, start it and get confused mid way and scribble it out in frustration to start over again.
    Paper forms give me anxiety.
    I am extremely accurate with a pen when drawing things tho, I’m great at art so I assumed I can’t have dysgraphia - I only struggle holding a pen and making a shape if it’s a specific symbol like a letter or number. Sometimes logos and punctuation are hard to draw/write for me too.
    But I could draw a pretty flower easily with nice smooth outlines. Draw anything, a like an elephant from memory, a skull, a human face from the side or front easily. Can draw hands, can draw cartoon dogs all with no reference, but I cannot write fully in caps because I’ll go lower case and write the wrong letters. Go diagonal and have to stop to remember writing goes left to right, but not those words cos I have to stop to remember what that means.
    Is it the case most dyslexics al have dysgraphia as part of being dyslexic or something?
    I can’t keep looking to add to my list, I just wanna call it “dyslexic as fuck” and move on bleeeeegh

I managed to get enough down for a "D' or an "E" grade. I always felt like my folks were very disappointed in me. Especially since my older brother was an A student. So in my 50s I found out I have ADHD. He's wealthy now, probably a millionaire on paper. I work with Autism and young adults with learning difficulties. I won't get rich but I can relate with them and they like me. But it doesn't pay well at all. I hate ADHD but at least i understand a bit better.

    Dysgraphia and being left handed is no fun at all.
