I've dealt with many mowers. Especially when starting my company. The Exmark mower and motor is absolutely great! I run that mower NON STOP and it's got plenty of power. Definitely a good investment!

I do a lot of work at a Toyota engine plant, which I believe everyone will agree makes a very dependable engine. And I can assure you, nylon or at least polymer, (I don't know anything about plastic type stuff") is in the engines, from timing chain guides to what I think is a gear for the oil pump, i've not really studied it in all the time I spend there. Weight is not an issue with a metal gear, seems dumb they are using that as an issue, they wouldn't weigh that much different and weight could mostly come into effect when changing the rpm. It for sure, is quieter. This gear is what's called a straight "spur gear" which can be really loud especially when manufactured cheaply where the two sets of gears don't slide together and meet smoothly when in operation. If quality is what they where going for, they would have made a "harringbone" or at least an "helical" gear, which they wouldn't because of cost. No my friends, they did this for Cost, and the sound is a byproduct. The gear inside the Toyota engines are a Helical, which makes them tougher, and I would say quieter, but that's not really an issue with nylon. What I dont know about, is different types of nylons, and how they can put up with the force required to run a two piston cam shaft with the heat that's in the engine

the nylon cam gear is not a big deal. my father was a diesel mechanic and he said they had tractor trailer engines with nylon gears with hundreds of thousands of miles on them and they didnt have issues. like everyone on here i would prefer metal but nylon isnt necessarily a problem. i hope this engine withstands the test of time and becomes a legend

Love the design of this engine. The carburetor is VERY easy to remove and install. The carb is also very simple to work on. Love the easy to remove upper shroud and oil drain system. It also has aluminum valve covers instead of crappy plastic.

Many companies still use nylon and for good reason...including the god of power equipment Kawasaki. This looks like a well made engine.

I don't know why people are so mad about this engine, it's clearly proven itself over the past decade. people complain that it's made in china and yeah it is just like kawi and honda have their engines made in china. it all depends on the manufacturer not the country. lots of quality products are made in china. people need to get over themselves 😒and nylon cam gears are in ALL the different brands of v-twins. Honda has them Kawi has them Subaru has them and of course Kohler and so on. the only way those could fail is if you let the engine overheat way above it's operating temp. which as you can imagine is very unlikely on a lawn mower.

I’m considering a Radius for personal use. Didn’t realize Exmark “made their own” engine. Apparently you have to move to the Lazer series to get the Kawasaki. Exmark (Toro) is doing what many manufacturers have done - instead of buying an engine from Kawasaki for $1200, they sub a Chinese outfit to make an “equal” for $500 less. This is an additional $500 profit per mower sold, greatly increasing the bottom line (making stock holders happy).
Is there still a US manufacturer that says, “I know it costs a little more, but we use the best components that we know of”?
I’ve got mixed feelings on the nylon gear. Of course, we would all like to see it as carbon steel. However, it does lend itself to noise (which comes from vibration). Vibration has its own set of long-term consequence - This is bitter-sweet.

I snapped mine right off doing the 5 hour oil change.
What happens is that you stick a bolt in the hose and carry on. This appears to be the recommended fix and it happens to a LOT of people. They're supposedly working on a fix as I type. But since the engine is manufactured in China by Loncin, it may take a while to happen.

Hello, I need some help on this engine first to say a valve fell out into the cylinder and it destroyed the piston and head so I bought new head assmbly with piston and rings anyway its all back together compression is 160 was running good then a little pop started and left but then the motor just quit although i can restart it so I discovered not enough vac at the intake I mean this thing hardly draws any fuel does any one have a suggestion to help me figure out where the vac went? I now have noticed a small leak of oil at the oil pump cover at bottom of motor but its not terrible..any advice I would appreciate! Both sides have great compression..If I run it wide open it does fine for a little while then it will eventually run out of fuel..

Exmark is a terrible company for quality in 2019! I have had 2 issues from a brand new lawnmower. Grease fitting was stripped out I noticed when I got it home and after 2 hours of use one of the blades came loose and the belts seized up. I babied the thing. Never hit anything! If they don’t make it right my goal is to tell everyone my experience!

As stated above, all indications is that this engine is identical to the Predator engine sold at Harbor Frieght and that means its a Lincon engine, which is Chinese. There were two 708 cc engines under the Toro nameplate designed specifically for the Timecutter mower line of mowers in 2015. One is rated at 22.5 hp; the other is rated at 24.5. Of course these are gross power numbers rated at 3600 RPM. Be advised, neither Toro or Exmark build engines. As far as I can find, these are built by Loncin in China. I'm not suggesting whether or not the quality is good or bad, but keep in mind, the Toro Timecutter is the lowest-end zero turn models, and a Toro zero turn with this upgraded, exact engine can be had for as little as $2,700 with a stamped, 42" deck. And the current price for an identical engine replacement at Harbor Freight is at or about $900. What I don't know is the physical differences between the 22.5 hp and the 24.5 hp version. In the Timecutter line, the models with the Myride suspension and seats with arm rests get the more powerful version for an extra $500 or so, and I believe some of the larger decks get the 24.5 hp, but they are both 708 cc.
