Will I Ever Have Goldfish Again? (or any fish?)

  • Following up after my video discussing the ethics of goldfish breeding, today's video is a little chat about whether I'm interested in having goldfish again in the future, betta fish, or any other type of pet fish. I gotta say, after looking at the footage of my ghost bristols I used to have while making this video, I'm really missing them! 😭

Actually the goldfish I have, they a common use to be feeder goldfish I bought about 5 years ago. They turned out to be gold and white fan tail goldfish. They are full grown and they’ve stopped changing colors now and a couple are all white with orange spots, little tiny spots, some are gold and white, and all have these beautiful fan tails! They have been my favorite. They are in with my koi in the pond/pool I have them in. A couple even eat out of my hands. ❤️❤️❤️

I always wanted to be a marine biologist and was completely obsessed with aquariums but grew up in a family who struggled financially. I’m now an adult and still watch your videos and get the same serotonin I did back then. I live in south Florida and always hoped to meet you ! I also am still in the goldfish hobby thanks to you . @elurrra She also got blasted by many other pet keepers for saying that people who keep a lot of pets are hoarders. Just because she couldn't care for her pets properly doesn't mean others can't. She also BRED her geckos without doing any research and then just gave away the babies when they were the wrong gender. She deleted all those videos to cover herself. As for fancy goldfish - many of mine are 5+ years old. She broke all the fish keeping rules so hers never lived long. And then she used her mental health as an excuse to be a sorry person.

Hi Jennie, I hope you read this comment. I found your channel today and it was so cool and so sad at the same time. I found you through the video of the Kois show in Florida, in that video by coincidences of life you greeted someone that I bought fish from several times here in Miami and I said wow, I know that guy! then I saw another video where you came to Florida again just to buy fish in Orlando and that seemed so great to me, that's the excitement we all have for goldfish, we travel hours just to go see fish, sometimes we don't even buy them, we only travel to see them. Then suddenly your last videos broke my soul. Seeing how you lost so many pets, life partners made me want to write something to you. I lost about 30 goldfish about 10 years ago, I had many tanks but they were few gallons, so the cleaning that had to be done was too much, it was due to the same disease. I lost many butterfly telescopes, many orandas and beautiful Ryukins, it broke my heart and I left everything for several years. 2 and a half years ago I had fish tanks and goldfish again. Now I only have 2 tanks, 1 45 gallon and 100 gallon, cleaning is much easier and I worry less about water changes. The point is that your channel and your experience as a breeder is more than just a failure, let me tell you that channels like yours save more fish than you have lost. I'm sure you can do more to save fish lives by making videos of these types of fish than by going offstage. If you had a bad experience take advantage of it, learn from it and do better, 10 tanks was too much? Ok only have 1 but have the healthiest tank of all and show how you did it you have half a million followers learning from you that is not easy to do but you did it I love the love you have for fish People like you shouldn't miss out on CZcams, a place where most only want to generate views with empty content. I don't know, he never commented on any video on any social network but your case broke my soul. You don't have to do it if you feel like your health depends on it, obviously that's more important, but if you feel a bit of joy wanting to try to get back do it! half a million people and surely more in the future are going to love your way of talking about fish. I think you would make half a million people happy if you had only one goldfish in 40 gallons. It's not the quantity, it's the quality! ♥️

You are very knowledgeable in pet care, no matter the pet. I can see how fish keeping was anxiety inducing, especially when there were probably constant health issues in the fish. I tried keeping a Betta three times. I watched so many videos, had a heater, cleaned the water. They never lasted more than a year or less. And of course I know people who kept them in a small bowl, dirty water, no heater etc. and those lived 2-3 years. I gave up. I feel bad that I buy them and they don’t do well under my care .

I totally respect your wishes, I love you talking about the single tail varieties because my 6 year old goldfish was a tiny feeder fish and has grown with a fully white body with an orange spot at the top. I turned to your channel during those times to make sure I was taking care of it properly since I didn't anticipate it living past the first couple of days. Now I have a 75 gallon with some mixed fancies which I definitely will probably not get again, but it's the main attraction in my house. I always have questioned the ethics, and you talking about single tails was validating. I think that one is going to be around here for awhile (hopefully)

It takes a lot of courage to be so open and honest with a total change of heart like yours. I very much appreciate that you explain your journey and thoughts on this matter in detail, especially since it carries a lot of emotions and even pain with it. In the past when watching your videos, I was fascinated by the topic, but I always thought that these fancy goldfish seemed to move around with so much effort. So I was relieved I wasn't imagining things, when you opened up about your thoughts on the health issues of fancy goldfish. I've come to see that people will accept pretty much anything as 'normal for the breed' whatever pet species you look at, but we need some more healthy scepticism and people like you, who show that there is no shame in changing your mind.

at the age of 14 years old, after having multiple tanks-terrariums, I had rejected the very idea of keeping captive animals, back then there was not alot of easily accessible knowledge (pre-internet) and we would all struggle as young people keeping fish and other critters healthy and ultimately alive. Pet shops seemed to really take advantage too (increased sales). I have a negative view of big box pet stores to this day. I came back to fish keeping in my 40's, but from a hobby-farming perspective. The goal as I see it, is breeding, in the sense that if the conditions are good to the point that they breed, then you have created an acceptable environment (ethically-speaking), then you can give away, trade or sell the surpus fish and those fish will be healthier and more environmentally sound for local needs than what pet shops or importers offer. If you can't get them to do nuptial behavior or breeding, then you need to ask questions and adapt. With regard to fancy goldfish, I came close to droping them altogether, but I realised that the main problems seem linked to abnormal super-round and short body and abnormal mouths that don't propery extend in some cases (that's very harsh for a carp). The big farms have selection criterias so that the fish looks full blown as a sub-adult at the time of sale, and they could not care less what problems those fish will have in two years after the sale. The solution is to breed and select the more powerfull long-bodied fish to create a more ethical line of healthy long-lived fish and do less inbreeding as well (health over form). actually, going to these dreaded pet stores may be the only solution to find sub-par fancy goldfish that have these longer bodies. Interrestingly, my "worst" fancy goldfishes became my very best once they reached over two years of age (slower to develop wens, for example). A weird thing also is the concept of elegance, usually, agility is part of elegance, but in the current goldfish world, a fat-round-clumsy-long-finned goldfish that swims slowly by trashing it's head left and right is considered elegant. Really, we simply need new criterias and not look to established standards, as they are for extreme sports (goldfish shows). elongate the body untill all swim-bladder issues dissapear, wens should appear at the age of 2 or if later even better etc... ouch, this looks like a rant now, doesn't it?

I took a couple years away from aquariums when I moved to a new apartment. The apartment itself was larger, but just not laid out in a way that would easily support the 5 tanks I was running. Only recently have I decided to dip my toe back in by way of keeping a 10 gallon neocaridina shrimp set up. The maintenance is definitely easier and I also don’t miss the amount of work it took to keep all the other aquariums running properly. That said, I may still set up a 40 Breeder…. Multi Tank Syndrome is real.

It's great to see you back on CZcams. I am sorry for the negative experiences you endured, having taken on some many projects that it ended up being work, instead of being a joy. I do hope to see you keep fish again. Bettas would be a great starting point. Keeping just half a dozen will be a lot easier to maintain. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us, as there are many current and former fish keepers out there who can identify with the problems of maintaining too many fish, aquariums, etc. I wish you all the best, and will cross my fingers that you will be back in Florida, or other location, where you will be able to realize your dream of having a pond.

Koi are on the opposite end where healthy body conformation is something farmers strive for.
On the topic of dogs, purebred dogs are fine, but when the breed loses their jobs they go downhill. Fighting and hunting breeds alive today still resemble their historic counterparts as long as they were allowed to continue doing what they were created for.

You are a good teacher and even if you don't keep fish yourself- telling others about what you know/think is super awesome. Lots of nice fish keeping videos on youtube but none of the content is better than your's for goldfish. If I want to introduce a new hobbyist to goldfish care I immediately recommend your content. I wish you'd do something like you did with goldfish with houseplants because that's something I would also care about and I know how talented you are as a " social media creator and educator" maby since you hair isn't the brand and goldfish aren't the topic; plants and something else could be the topic and identifier. Hi there! I'm a person who followed your channel about 5 yrs ago when i had my indoor pond (see "goldfish bridge works" on youtube). I had a wakin, watonai and shubunkin. Thats only 3 fish and about 130gallons. That's it. Well I am completely on par with how your view of goldfish keeping developed. Eerie almost how we both at the same time got out of them too. Don't get me wrong I loved them. But exactly how you describe, the worry about their health and work that enslaved me every week was not worth it. I did it and didn't complain. But when my basement flooded because of an error on my part I was SO done! I sold them to someone with a pond and freed myself from the work and worry. And like yourself I will NEVER have goldfish in that capacity again. And I only had 3! I cannot imagine the workload and stress you had with all your precious fish... i still love them, but i completely agree. Its just not worth the amount of work it takes to keep them happy and healthy and thriving. Ofcourse then there's my neighbor who just stuffs a bunch of goldfish in her aquarium, does minimal waterchanges and they survive.. makes me jealous sometime how some people can just be ok with fish "surviving" rather than thriving. But if I had that i still couldn't help myself. I never allowed the water to be over 40ppm nitrate which mean once a week 75% waterchanges on 130gallons.. it was NOT what i signed up for. But I did it for the health of the fish. For 3 years. And Im so glad Im now released from that prison. Oh and also. I'm not into reptiles, so when your channel took that turn I just turned off notifications. Simple. No pressure. Just ignore those who make demands. That is so not what its about... good luck with your life! Hopefully someday you will enjoy a pond again :)

i think fishkeepers should like... show videos on weekly and even daily tank maint more often, because people really don't understand just how much work fishkeeping is. people are so commonly misinformed about fish and told they're beginner/kid pets and it's like. they're SO much work. i would love to keep a full community tank again or even goldfish, but when you have health problems it becomes nearly impossibly to keep up with all that work and it's so hard to get into the tank. I used to have to keep my betta's tank on a low tv console stand i got for it because it was just easier for me to clean that way.

I have now downsized to having only a 5 and 10 gallon tank, plus a 40 gallon for my musk turtle, but soon I will be re-homing all of my fish, as I am moving into a school bus.
