Having the Humans Guard the LZ was the smartest decission in the whole story.
How did you know you had to rescue us - We saw you fighting
How did you find us - Your parade style march left a trail even deaf and blind person could follow.

A marine general that retreated was famously asked why his troops fled. His reply was that "they didn't retreat, they attacked in the direction of the thickest enemy formation and it turned out to be to his rear."

If an opposing force is really small and fires a few shots before running... that's bait. How the hell did that dude get promoted to General if he can't recognize one of the oldest and simplest feints in history?

You have to understand that they are so advance and has already forgatten what war is really like and as the story suggest they where at peace for decades and decades, or you could also say that the way they fought is different before this war and is accostumed to this scenario or lastly just plot device to make us look good I mean where the only example of species civilization as far as we know lmao

It wasn't uncommon also in our history, expecially if the commanding officer is overconfident (& a bit idiotic), think only about Fetterman's massacre shortly after the end of ACW.
Feigned retreat is a trick largely employed in human history, such as at Hasting or by the mongols.

As species get more advanced and cultured, they lose the real feel for war. It is primal. You must tap that to survive a battlefield.

Overall, I like these stories. Many of the tales speak of alien disdain for archaic human weapons. How about a tail of aliens landing and militarily confronting THE CONTINENTAL ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES in 1778. The aliens capture and put in stasis one US soldier complete with his pack, clothing, and weapons.
Once the remaining US soldiers become aware and fight back, the "advanced" alien forces are surprised, then leave Earth in terror and chaos. Story ratchets ahead 1000 years when the stasis US soldier in a museum is desperately woken to become a Force for Liberty and Justise in a Galactic scaled military confrontation between Good and Evil.
