    00:00 Introduction
00:47 What is a Fedora Hat?
Basically, a fedora hat is a snap brim hat. it's called that way because you can actually snap the brim down. A fedora is typically pinched in the middle and then again in the front. One of the big hallmarks and probably the reason it's so popular is that the Fedora is shapeable in many different forms.
Next up is the brim of the fedora. First of all, you can have different sizes. You can have very short brims, medium brims, and wide brims. Again, if you want to stay timeless, something around in the middle length is probably your best bet. Of course, it all comes down to what your face shape is and so larger brims work better for some persons and shorter for others.
The brim of the fedora can be snapped down in the front or snapped down all the way around or snaps up in the front and down in the back.
In terms of material, most fedoras these days are made from wolf felt which is basically hair from sheep that is felted which is not woven but the hair is taken together, rubbed together until they intertwine and they don't come apart anymore.
The next step up would be a rabbit or hare felt which is finer and softer and it usually makes for a great hat.
The very best qualities are beaver felt hats and they usually use hair from the belly of the beaver.
In terms of hat decoration, most hats will feature a band on the outside and there can be a bow, there can be you can have different kind of ribbons, sometimes you have little things that dangle on them, other times you can have a really wide band or a slim band maybe a leather band and sometimes you can even see people that add feathers to their hat just to highlight the individual character.
05:01 So how did the fedora get its name?
In the 1890s, there was a play titled Fedora and at the time, all men wore hats on the street. The everyday man didn't have much money and could only afford one hat that had to serve multiple purposes. The fedora was great because it could be shaped in any form needed. At that time, no gentleman would have ever worn a fedora hat. The Homburg hat is their go to choice. A gentleman would maybe only wear a fedora hat in the countryside for very casual outings. Just like many other things in menswear, the Prince of Wales wore a fedora in 1924 and it became hugely popular that way because he liked softer things.
06:27 So How To Wear a Fedora Hat
Basically, you want to wear it with a classically inspired outfit which means a jacket or a suit. If you want you could wear it with a chalk stripe or pinstripe suit that's rather bold. As the fedora is a classic piece of headwear that's not worn a lot anymore, I suggest you go with like double-breasted suits, peak lapels, maybe single breasted suits with a vest like a three-piece suit or with a contrasting vest. You can also have accessories such as cufflinks or rings maybe a tie bar or a collar bar because it just underlines the entire classic look of the fedora. Wear the fedora the right season. A felt hat is great in the winter and it's cold outside maybe in the fall and also in spring but not during the summer.
    FEDORA HAT ETIQUETTE
The golden rule is whenever you're inside, take the hat off.
Also, if you wear a fedora hat, try to avoid sunglasses because it simply looks odd and over-the-top.

Eh..technically what most 'neckbeards' wear is a trilby..for some strange reason though if you look up fedora nowadays on a site like Amazon or ask for one, thanks to the proliferation of actors who wear them in their off time, you'll often find a trilby pictured instead and not a traditional fedora. Most people nowadays outside of those into the collection of hats or old fashioned cloths think a trilby and a fedora are the same thing.

I don't have a wholesale disagreement with you. I too would like to see hat culture return. However, it use to be that coat/hat hooks and hat shelves were readily available when entering a public space. Not so much anymore. So unless a safe and clean appliance is provided, I think a man should keep his hat on. I'm aware that this is contrary to old school rules. But there's no reason to sacrifice the shape and cleanliness of your hat for rules of etiquette that no longer apply.

What made the fedora popular with me, is Indiana Jones. And that's generally how I wear my fedora. I have two, one for casual wear and one for special occasions. The casual one is brown, I've had it for years. It's has been through just about everything I've been through. I've worn it while riding horses, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking. The the one I wear for special occasions is grey, it's a little newer than my brown one. I only wear it for church, or anywhere where I might have to dress up a little bit.

For the most part, I looked at Indiana Jones as a means to dress up my fedora. Khakis, button down shirt, sport coat/leather jacket, boots. Dress it up from there. It's honestly much easier that way to get more out of your fedora, but it also depends what kind of fedora you get as well. I purposefully got a hat styled like Indy's because it can go with a nice suit, a hike or even to the park.
Though the thing about the sunglasses... I don't wear them to keep the sun out of my eyes. I wear them because it gets very, very bright in California during the summer. The hat keeps the sun out of my eyes while my sunglasses keep my eyes from being burned by the bright sun. Also the Blues Brothers make it look cool.

Excellent video, love the history and context you provide. For me the gateway drug into Fedoras was a second-hand Stetson Stratoliner in their "royal" range. The felt has a luxurious soft feel and can easily be shaped to suit. (You will want to get rid of the cheap-looking factory press.) The colour I got, "Caribou", is a wonderful complex taupe that goes with most things. (It can look brown, grey, taupe, or even have an olive cast according to the light and what you're wearing it with.) I don't wear the fedora with a suit, but with everyday casual clothes, and always get compliments.

Rabbids and hairs! Oh yeah! That aside, good video. I was especially intrigued to learn about the Cavanagh edge - I hadn't known about that before.I think this video could benefit from a discussion of other materials that these hats are made of. Clearly, the classics felt and straw in the Panama are covered, but what about other materials? A lot of cheap ones are made in cotton or linen, which can look very cheap but there are some very good ones as well.I think a generalised hat and cap video for the modern man outside of formal events (no need to talk about top hats, we know what they are for) would be good - covering other alternatives like flat caps and newsboy caps (I am a flat cap man myself, I wear them every day).
