    I really, really love this piece! The background is gorgeous and the bird really came to life with the final details, they made such a big difference! I've got a set of Arteza woodless watercolor pencils, but I don't use them as often as I'd wish to - I want to use them for more than just sketching for my watercolor paintings! They're nothing spectacular, in terms of quality, but they get the job done for now.
    I look forward to the review of these inexpensive pencils! I'm in the awkward position of really struggling when I'm stuck with low quality supplies (I can't bring myself to just power through it), but also don't have the budget to get the really good stuff. So I really appreciate finding ones that are good enough not to get in the way of my learning but also affordable enough that I'm actually able to get them!

    I recently have been using the polychromos with the same brand of watercolour pencil using the same color over the top. I’m able to get a wonderful blend and opaque finish. I used the oil/wax pencil first then us the watercolour pencil and with a water brush blend.

    I have been using Prismacolors for over 45 years, always love them. Also use the Prismacolor art sticks. Wonderful products. Also use water color pencils and no problems with them. Like using the Prismacolor over a watercolor base. I also like using Grumtine by Grumbacher. It is made from orange oil. Smells great and works well. I also used to use hairspray as a fixative. The low priced stuff works best, also no major smell issues. 😊

    Adorable little birdie!!!
    I have the Arteza watercolor pencils. I find that the pigment doesn't dissolve enough leaving pencil lines or washes away. Maybe my problem is the brush I've been using. I use water brushes instead of brushes you dip in water so I can watch shows while I paint. I'll try some of my regular crafting brushes with very little water and see if I get a better result. Of course, that means getting off my couch...
    If changing brushes doesn't help, maybe it's the quality of the pencils.

    • @MysteryViv
      @MysteryViv Před 3 lety +1

      I have the Arteza watercolour pencils as well and never get good results. Just like you said, it is either lines or no pigment. I hope changing brushes and using less water is the key.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 3 lety +1

      I think the arteza watercolor pencils are good. Try less pressure when coloring and empty the waterbrush and dip it in water instead:)

    Lindsey, do you have a video on comparing watercolor sketchbooks?

  • @kamalitarajagopalan2671

    Are these similar to the prima watercolor pencils? And do they dissolve good in water? I have had problems in the past with watercolor pencils leaving behind marks even with lots of water and a good brush. And also, are they pigmented when dipped into water and used directly on paper?

    Have you tried the Koh-i-noor colored pencils? I love as they are very rich in pigment, maybe the white would work for you, I also use it for drawing patterns on fabric. I don't know how afordable they would be at your place, I live in the city where Koh-i-noor is being made, but I think they sell worldwide :)

    So cute 🥰 , I love the blurry background it really makes that little bird pop and seem more 3D! I should really draw more birdies myself 😂, I'm notoriously bad at drawing them. Maybe I should make that some kind of challenge 🤔 Though wait, that's another thing I'm bad at; sticking with challenges and actually finishing them😅 These type of little finches used to be so much more often seen here in Germany when I was younger. Sad to see that we humans seem to push them out of their regular habitats 😕 I love seeing them around, they always make me smile - finches, tits, bare-chested robins, blackbirds - no matter which of them 😁 Good thing my mom loves feeding them, so they're like more regular guests in our garden 😊

  • @christinap6760

    When I paint the brush bends! I see that your brush seems hard- tipped brush., maybe it's the quality of the brush. My brushes are very soft pointed!!! 😒. I don't understand, everything seems to be more difficult., for me painting.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 3 lety +3

      I use a golden taklon or white nylon brush for watercolor pencils. The brush that usually comes with the pencils is too soft and holds too much water. Try a synthetic made for acrylic painting and you will have more luck with watercolor pencils.

    Oh boy don't buy first time poly's if you just start;Start with kohinoor or prisma, with arthritis poly's will be quite hard without solvent. Invest in decent paper. Paper paper paper. You can have all the expensive pencils in the world but if the paper is off it will be frustrating. I personally like wc paper for colored pencils or pastelmat. Do have issues finding the solvent I like.
