• How to Do a Fan Patter...
My parents have this fan pattern in their living room ceiling and I always look up and stare at the ceiling trying to figure out how someone did it, it’s mind blowing, but now I now exactly how and how easy it is thanks to you. Me not knowing really was bothering me after so many years. I will share with my dad next time I visit. Awesome video.
We LOVE SeeJaneDrill! Leah rocks. Whatever I'm looking up, if you've covered it in a video, then yours is inevitably the best explanation with clear visuals and accessible step-by-step guide through something new. You are a true teacher, and you make subjects inviting and help any new project feel less intimidating. Thanks!
Thank you, Leah, for sharing this tip, a great idea for my 1920's home hall ceiling; and cost-effective.
Very nice. You always make it very understandable for non-professionals. I appreciate that.
thank you!
Think i will start telling people in my videos after i try and fail to go see it done right on your channel!
Adding the "See Jane Drill" logo on the side of you thumbnails was a great idea! makes in 1000% easyer to see your videos upcoming videos, seems like you teach me something new many times per day! Thank you!
you're very welcome, Rex, and thanks!
Thanks, Leah! Have a great weekend!
Thank you, for explaining what a nap is instead of just assuming everyone knows!
🙂
@@seejanedrill I added this as a new comment, but it won't let me tag you: "To anyone out there thinking of doing this over the paper backing from wallpaper: It bubbles. You can still work with it, but sometimes the paper tears when you're applying the comb, and you have to redo a section. I heard (after the fact, of course) that priming the wall before you add the texture stops the paper from bubbling. Leah, can you add insight on the best method to texture over wallpaper backing?"
Can you show us how to fix a crack in this pattern. Been looking at it for wayyyyy too long! Help please.
Thanks for this! There's a patch that I'm fixing in my ceiling and I've been trying to figure out how to do this so it blends in. My local Lowe's has this tool, so I'm going to give it a try.
I tried this not as good, but it was the design of our wall. It was though my very first try. I was repairing the plumbers holes in our walls. Not to stressed about it since it is behind the washer and dryer. My husband said "it looks good, like you know what you're doing!" Thanks for the tutorial!
Hi Leah, nice job!👍🏻 I have to match a similar fan texture occasionally on older plaster ceiling repairs. It ‘s larger fan pattern than yours. It’s called a fish scale pattern here in my area. Have a great day! -Paul
Hey, Paul! thanks!
Leah, thanks for this video. Really interesting and informative as always!
you're very welcome, Kathy, and thanks for commenting!
I tried this once many years ago and couldn't even get it to look right on a test piece on the ground. I may try again now that I have more experience with mud.
I think the surface must be primed so it doesn't suck the moisture from the mud. You also have to be very regular with the pattern. Each shell has to cover the pivot points of the ones above it.
The mud must be thin and perfectly clean.
Thanks for the encouraging video!
Video was awesome! And easy to follow thanks
This is fantastic! I'm going to do this to my fireplace hearth.
Thank you so much for this tutorial 👏👏👏
I remember a crew doing this to our under construction house as a child. They did it with BROOMS. it was and still is beautiful. People still to this day say I usually dont like textured ceiling but these are gorgeous.
🙂👍
Leah, that is fantastic!
I never liked anything but a smooth wall! But I am renting and I have sone very rough walls throughout a large hallway staircase and the walls are not repareable. They need to be torn down to the plaster and start over. So now I will patch them and of course they will be lumpy because the covering over the lathe seems to be something like a plasterboard and it crumbles! So I will try the fan pattern - Thank you Leah!
you're very welcome, Kimberlee, and best of luck with your project!
Love it Leah!! Have to try it next time I repaint my living room
🙂
@@seejanedrill Leah, you gave me the confidence to apply a fan texture on one and a half walls in our otherwise tongue-in-groove dining room. We removed the walls, and were planning to paint directly over the wood for a rustic look. We had no idea there had been drywall added over the years (house was built in 1921), and I was at a loss for what to do until I saw this video. Now our fan patterned walls look great in our refreshed dining room, and I have you to thank. Thank you for what you do!
Great video!!!! Thank you
Looks good
Beautiful!!
Leah - love these videos that you do.. make many jobs easy as we learn... I think some times you ahve more fun than people !! heh, heh .... stay well ... thom
#Metoo, but why would anyone want this kind of pattern on their walls.
Yep, I'll be the one with the "goo gobs". My parents did this pattern in our home in the sixties. I loved it as a child. So, of course this will be the pattern I go with. I always wondered how mom and dad did this so perfectly on a trashed ceiling. It was beautiful, I am very house proud and this is the ceiling I am going to put in my ugly kitchen ceiling...goo gobs and all.
Use white ceiling paint to thin out the joint compound along with a little water. It will define the grooves more and will reflect the light.
Thank you so much! 💗💗💗
can also do it with brush if you want a more random pattern to the grooves
Thank you so much!
Thanks Jane!🙏
Hi Leah, great video as always. I had a question about the durability of these textures? Joint compound, like USG Dust Control or Sheetrock 90 seems a bit crumbly to me but I've never textured it like this. How does it hold up to abrasions? Is there a benefit to using compound over something like Diamond Veneer?
I like it!
Real Deal DIY old school
Hi, thank you for making it look so easy. My question when painting the joint compound on the ceiling how long before it dries?
I have a 150 sq. Ft ceiling. Would I have enough time to finish the swirls before it becomes unworkable. And I’ll probably be slow at it.
great video! how would one remove this?
I need to put the good stuff around sink to keep water from leaking under caulking I think and would like to see how to use it help please
I’ve always liked the look of a textured ceiling. 👍
🙂
I love the look of those patterns and that is a great look.
thank you, Sidney! 🙂
Hi, I’m a new homeowner and decided to take down all the popcorn from the ceilings and thinking of replacing it with this texture. Do you have to prime the service before applying the texture, after applying the texture, or do you really not need to prime? Thank you for the videos my girlfriend and I really enjoy watching your channel and are thinking about trying some of these ideas (neither one of us have a background on home repairs or anything related to repairs).
Oh my God thank you for doing this video. Now I had to go in my attic to deal with a leak from my roof. Now I lost my footing I should say my knee and it cracked the drywall in the ceiling. Now I know how to fix it where the ceiling is now flat. I've got that down. Girl item not know how to properly fix it when it's already swirled and I have to put drywall tape on that crack...my thoughts are is that I'm going to have to stand around it and put that tapeand try to level it out and do the fan but honestly girl I do not know. I have the most horrendous house ever but it's mine and I love it and I've done a lot of things myself. And I'm very proud of myself being woman so please advise I would beg of you tell me what I should do Leah
I want to paint the ceiling after doing this! Is it possible to use a roller without any issues or loss of texture? I know painting popcorn ceiling is a menace
I've never seen this pattern on a ceiling, but I see it all the time on the floors to parking garages.
To anyone out there thinking of doing this over the paper backing from wallpaper: It bubbles. You can still work with it, but sometimes the paper tears when you're applying the comb, and you have to redo a section. I heard (after the fact, of course) that priming the wall before you add the texture stops the paper from bubbling. Leah, can you add insight on the best method to texture over wallpaper backing?
I am going to be using Fkexcoat by Sryro , is this something you can do on a Concrete wall ?
I got those patterns in my house, how can I smooth it out into a flat surface again? Can you make a video for that please.
just mud it
Thanks I will be patching a ceiling like this
God bless
Coffee time☺️
🙂
Hello friend I've learned so much from your videos . I have a question about calling. Do u have a video on that ?
Calling?
How did you get the roller to make the lines like that as you roll it on?
Leah, any way I can send you a picture of the plaster texture on my walls so you can tell me how to achieve it?
was that plaster pre-mixed ?
I did this to my wall the other day and I don’t like it. Can u go over it with more joint compound & make it smooth ? How would I do that ?
You can skim coat over the texture
My mom's house was built in 1949 so the WHOLE house has this pattern. The previous owners of the house did a repair in the ceiling and that spot is flat. Always bothered me. I'm going to attempt to blend it in. Thanks Jane
What size segments do you do this in for a ceiling?
You work the entire ceiling from either left to right or from right to left.
seejanedrill
Thank you one further question.
My 1958 cement block ranch house has a texture ceiling. It is done in irregular and very messy looking trowel swirls. It looks like a random grouping of quotation marks made by an actual hand. I don’t want to loose the charm but I do want it to look coherent. Question: Must I sand down the previous texture or can I smooth the pattern out with a skim coat and the add this fan technique over top?
Can you paint over this?
That's a pretty pattern and the tool is so inexpensive. Is it very hard on your arm to do an entire ceiling like that? I don't remember being in a place that had that pattern on the ceiling, or maybe I just didn't notice it. Thanks for showing this to us. The more we know, the more we know, you know?
Hi Linda, it can be hard on your arm. But because the ceiling is done in sections, you have resting time in between each section. I hope you are having a good summer! Best regards, Leah
What is the paste you are using
Can we use x tex
WOW, COOL NICE JOB
thank you, Joe!
Hey! I’m new to your channel! I’m also new to texture I would like to change the texture of my room. I believe it’s sand texture it looks similar to popcorn, less bumpy though. What would be a good way to get rid of it and applying new texture orange peel texture? Thanks
Hi and welcome to our channel! We have a whole playlist about wall and ceiling textures, and that is where I suggest you start. Here is the link: czcams.com/play/PL7TL3DIMD30dqVrE0sJC7RgerlRMGu4x6.html
I can't even imagine doing that on a ceiling.
I like my walls and ceiling straight and smooth.
This seems like a pain to paint.
Wrong video, huh? ☺️
Do people still do this. It's so 70's
nr3rful very dated
Yeah but just remember... bell bottom pants came back.... I'm just saying. ;)
I love it and am looking for someone to do it in my kitchen which I am remodeling. Hard to find someone so I may try my hand at it myself! Maybe it will come back in and I will be a pro at it and can make tons of money doing it!!!
well once it's already there, you have no choice other choice is to rip whole ceiling down, not worth it way to much work.
Next to asbestos, This is thing i've been paid most to make disappear. Please don't do this.
Sorry darlin, love yer vids. Just wanna save y'all money, cuz either i gotta shave it off or skim coat it. Shaving takes time, skimming adds unsafe weight.
Sounds like job security
I agree. I appreciate learning a new technique, but I've never really cared for this specific pattern and would fight tooth and nail if my wife wanted me to do it.
Like I should have done when my first wife asked me to put carpet in the bathroom ....
First! Lol
🙂👍
😂
As an Artex registered contractor for over40 years I have to say this is absolutely dreadful, If I would never have got paid for turning out this sub standard workmanship.
that is definitely not how to do it.
I'll never understand why people go for patterned walls, they look hideous imo.
The British Patriot and dated.
TBP, people do it to hide discrepancies
Because some people can't afford to knock down their drywall or plaster and lath walls and are tired of looking at cracked and uneven walls and want something nice to look at UNTIL they can afford it. What may be "hideous" to you may be gorgeous to someone else. "To each, his own".
Our home is 98 years old, and we're going to add a fan pattern texture to our dining room on one wall for an accent. We like it.
That 4” little piss texture tool, has got me dieing over here. Rite. Now get that 1200sq of lid textured. W/ your dumb, wrong tool. Shameful Leah. Show them the proper way. Or don’t show them
It's awful.nobody wants texture in their house anymore
GREAT VIDEO
