I do a lot of texture for a living and this is BY FAR THE BEST video for someone who’s never done this before to learn how. There’s obviously other ways to do this but for a complete beginner or even someone who dabbles in DIY here and there this is the best way you could possibly get a good profesional looking finish without being an actual profesional.

Agreed. Anyone who’s worked with drywall compound has probably applied this finish by accident. Extremely simple.

Leah, I'm now 70 years old. I started doing Drywall when I was 18 years old. I was helping my cousin for the summer and my father who sold drywall mud and materials to contractors. At that time I (we) never did the Santa Fe type texture out in central Texas and Oklahoma. Did a lot of knockdown though.
Anyway, I never did drywall as a profession. I ended up managing resort hotels in the islands. ;-) However, from time-to-time I've built several houses with my own hands and made repairs to others I've owned. Each time I've learned something from the Pro's on the job and used their instruction(s) to make my work better.
Now at 70 you've taught me the Santa Fe or Spanish knockdown texture and I sincerely appreciate it. I'm doing drywall texturing tomorrow for my son and his wife in their new home and this is the type of texture they want. Thanks to you... this is what they'll get!
Leah, I've watched many of your other video's and I sincerely appreciate you and your deep knowledge in everything you present. You are an excellent teacher/tutor. You make things clear, succinct, and comprehensive in a highly intelligent and meaningful way. Thank you for increasing the knowledge of us all... whether we are young and just starting out or oldie's (but goodie's) like me.

It's great to have DIY videos that don't assume that you already know "X,Y,Z" about the subject matter and break down the process into a very logical series of steps. This tutorial saved a ceiling in an upstairs small room that we didn't know what to do with! Someone applied drywall very poorly and it was sagging and not looking good. After this video, I got the courage to try something radical! We used 1x3s over the drywall at the studs to simulate exposed beams, and did this texture between! The 1x3s held up the old drywall pack into place and this compound finish gives the whole area a beautiful French country look! Thank you sooo much for making these videos available! 😀

  • @sandrafiedeldy4215

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I was nervous at first, so started with an area that would not show (behind a future wardrobe) By the end, I felt like an expert. My wall was made of ugly concrete block and I found it worked better to fill the grout lines first with a firm mud to create a flatish surface. Otherwise, the soft mud just dripped out of the grout lines. I think it would be worth creating a tutorial focusing on concrete block walls ... as so many people have these ugly block walls. This skip-trowel technique is perfect for this kind of wall. I also found it was unnecessary to get it perfect the first time. I ended up patching the bits I didn't like after it was dry ... and that saved me a lot of time as a beginner.

My aunt and I skipped troweled my farmhouse. I did the down stairs and she did the upstairs. WOW, noticeable difference in our techniques and in the heaviness of application! She has a very loud, outgoing personality whereas I'm sociable but more conservative and proper-like in my interactions with people. You guessed it. Hers was heavy and big swirls. Mine was softer swirls and lighter texture. ha ha

Leah, when I watched a video of yours on skimming a wall with joint compound (smooth 3 step application) I wished I saw it BEFORE I did a skim job on my very beat up drywall that was under wallpaper for decades. Now I can just smugly declare that I was doing a skip trowel finish as an excuse for my not so smooth results. Both styles are good and you teach them very well. Thanks!

I'm completing a remodel in my house that had terrible dry wall work done. After rescrewing all of the surfaces, most of the wall board was loose, I used this texture in most of the house. Using a 1/4 x 5/16 notched thin set trowel to get an even amount of mud on the wall. Then used pool concrete trowel to smooth out the mud, then skip or drag it to get the texture I wanted. The pool trowel has rounded corners which prevents the corners from digging in and leaving marks. I worked from a home made plasterer's board to hold my mud . A piece of smooth plywood screwed to an old piece of broom handle makes a good mud palet.

Leah, great job and easy to understand. I am starting heavy knockdown on my 3rd house. My technique is more like a "relief map". Some big flat areas too. The base color is a golden with some maroon and other colors rubbed in on the bumpy or texture part. We get so many compliments. thank you

As always, Leah has the best and most informational videos out there. I don't even search anymore, I just go to Seejanedrill's page first. Thank you for providing great video's. I can do it and because of you I did do it!! :)

Thank you so much! We were going to pay someone like $3,000 to remove popcorn ceiling and texture our new house. We don't have to do that. We can do it ourselves. You are awesome.

I've watched this video before and I love how you explain things. What I don't love is this particular texture. Its whats in my house currently though. I don't like ridges, smudges, and inconsistencies of this method. I was thinking about sanding it all down and starting over with a spray knockdown texture. However, my house is really big and thats a lot of work. Looks like I'm sticking with this texture after all.

Great video! I love the way you showed 3 different ways to achieve wall texture using basically the same technique. You didn't overcomplicate your explanations. Thank you for stressing that only one person should do the actual texturing. For some reason (I don't know why), this seems to be a hard concept for some people to grasp. Bravo!

Love the ease you show and explain. Everything I've seen you do is done in a training manner that should be applied in any teaching or training. Just simply a big fan. I could definitely work with you on anything I believe

Thank you so much for this video. All of the walls of my house are covered with this skip trowel finish and we're making some improvements in our kitchen and I have to replicate it so it doesn't look weird. your video really gave me what i needed to know to do the job, and made me feel like I could do it. and I did it and it looks like it was original. just took a little finesse to make it come together. thank you!

Yeah, I've had to blend this kind of texture in remodels several times lately, but also with a bit of sand added to the mud to really match. I just call it skip troweling, but the current client is calling what they want Santa Fe, so I was checking to see if that is somehow different, which apparently it isn't. lol Jane explained it really well. All I can add is to pay attention to the feel of the trowel as you're moving it. It will feel just a little different at what I think is the best angle.

  • @jybedard

thanks so much for this video! just a comment about only one person should do the texture. I was at a restaurant last weekend it had this on two different walls that joined to each other and you could clearly see that each wall was done by a different person. before watching this video I had guessed that that might have been the case. glad to confirm that with this video as I will be taking on this project myself. thanks again!

Indeed, I think the real trick with skip troweling is to not make it look vaguely like a dragon scales pattern from a distance. That gets harder the larger the facet is, such as a whole ceiling.
