    This is what I like! I'm obsessed with making a patch look as if it isn't there. Plastering is such an amazing skill. Wallboard compound is more versatile maybe, but plaster, like concrete, has so much more possible character and durability.

    A couple of questions. I have a swirl pattern ceiling like this that has a small area where the finish bubbled up a cracked after suffering a water leak from upstairs 2 years ago. It dried and seemed fine until a couple of weeks ago. Looks more like joint compound was used instead of plaster. I have scraped and sanded. I see no evidence of the white part of drywall, looks more like the backside, brown paper.
    1. Is it more likely that the original finish was joint compound since it flaked off?
    2. What product do you recommend to prep the paper so that I get good adhesion of joint compound to ceiling?
    I’m assuming I can swirl pattern joint compound the same way you did with the plaster.
    Great videos! Some of the best out there.
    Thanks.

    Helpful video but some important steps left out like how to actually "taper the edge" or "feather the edge" and how much silica sand did you use? TrueValue hardware stores sell those exact floats btw. It also would have been helpful to describe how you are actually applying the trowel to the surface (i.e. leading edge, flat, etc). You can't actually see this in the video.

    Leah, finding this video is a lifesaver! The repair looks like exactly what I need to do. The wall you are doing in this video looks like a duplicate of my wall! I have never done this before but I'm willing to give it a good DIY try. You recommended to someone to go to a building supply store, which I plan to do. I'm just not sure exactly what materials I need for the plaster mix. Would you recommend I take a sample from my wall to the store? I have a piece of the wall cut out by a plumber. Or can you tell me what products you mixed and the ratio of plaster/water/sand? Thank you so very much for this video and information!!

    In the union they teach to you to tape all seems because buildings swell and contract due to weather, plaster or joint compound. The glue in all purpose or topping moves with the house as the weather changes, plaster is similar to durabond witch doesn't move with the house.Plaster has a known tendency to crack(spider cracks) so wouldnt this increase the chance of your seems popping even with the dated plaster bond(i.e. Spider cracks) sooner than if you taped it?

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  Před 7 lety

      Hey Tyler, it depends. For this particular application, you wouldn't want to tape.

    • @dfnc03
      @dfnc03 Před 7 lety +3

      Tyler Hupp yes it would crack, it needs to be taped

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  Před 7 lety +3

      It mostly depends on the plaster systems and circumstances whether you tape. For example on one and two coat veneer plasters over gypsum panels you would tape because that particular system requires joints to be taped. However, in three coat systems like those over wooden lathe, plaster lathe, red tile brick, diamond mesh lathe etc. tape is not required. The circumstances which allow tape not to be used is when patching a plaster hole and "keying" is sufficient. You could use tape when patching, but it will interfere when you are applying your finish coat because it is not applied directly to the blue board (gypsum panels,) as in new work, but is sandwiched between layers of plaster instead. Plaster is not drywall.

    • @Excalibur-PR
      @Excalibur-PR Před rokem

      You need Norfolk veneer wich has a little sand in it or diamond finish plaster (has no sand whatsoever, the applicator must add silica sand to the mix. Like they said, this is an art, which it takes time to learn..some textures has more sand than others. For me, by experience I’ll look at the wall to be repair and use my best judgment the amount of sand I have to add to the mix to get the best matching texture. Other tips are; when mixing the plaster, don’t make it so loose that falls off you tools during the application. If possible Use 3M cellulose sponge to create the texture, they are 7”x4”, they are the best. Also tape the joint with fiberglass mesh tape of course before applying the plaster. There are so many tricks to this trade.I just mention a few.. hopefully will help you.

As far as how much. I put a little paint into a disposable cup. Then would try different quantities. I thought I had it close. Well after I painted the wall it was waaay too much sand mixed in. So after the paint dried I sanded it down slightly with some medium sandpaper. Then just took a new roller with some clean paint and went over it again applying it with a nice thick coat.. I had suitable results using the premixed sand texture, but it was definitely not matching the original and it seemed like the grit was too fine.

      You cant buy just one sheet? you can only get blueboard by the bundle? that sounds crazy

      Acually I would have just used easy sand 20 or durabond 45 and be done with this repair in 15 minutes
