Hi Leah. I just came across your vlogs, and I have to say thank you so much. I come from a carpentry family, but I’m a nurse. I learned some stuff from dad, grandpa, and uncles, but never got into the business. Now that I have my own house, and my carpentry relatives are gone, my wife expects me to fix and build stuff. If not for your videos, my stuff would look like an amateur did it. Thanks for saving me.

Love you Leah, I never knew....how they did this. The knock down is so much easier on the eye. The idea of this is to soften the plane of the wall or ceiling, the points sort of betray this intent; they look like they are actually sharp, not soft.

Instead of adding water to the joint compound, you can add drywall sealer (paint) to thin the mud, or what I have used, is the liquid from latex paint that has been frozen and separated, and the liquid on top mixed into the mud thins it and seals it in one application. Saves time and one extra step, once the texturing dries, you can go directly to painting the walls the color you want, no extra step with applying a sealer and then painting. Cuts out the cost of several gallons of sealer before painting.

As a contractor I prefer to paint the ceiling after so that way I can touch it up easily..but many builders do what what you mentioned. Either way you have to buy the paint. I just use a primer/ceiling paint and spray everything. Backroll the walls quick sand and you are ready.

Leah, great information. Also, rough texture, crisp edges are
places dust can/will settle. And for knockdown i wait about
10 to 15 minutes to lessen the chance of pulling or smearing
    the texture.

My folks did a heavy joint compound rolled on walls in the 1970s. We cut our elbows on those walls constantly...but it was an old house with lots of cracks so rather than patch hundreds of cracks, they did this texture. It was also VERY difficult to repaint. the lumps and bumps and divots don't take paint well.

Thank you for your instruction videos! I am a DIY woman with very little skill, but your videos have inspired me and given me the confidence I need. I just removed paneling from the wall that surrounds my fireplace. The sheetrock is pitted from the glue, and looks tigar striped with the glue residue left behind. There is no texture to speak of, maybe a very faint orange peel. I sanded & sealed the glue stripes with shellac, going over each stripe twice with drying in between each layer. Then i primed the wall with Gripper Primer. The glue is completely covered, but I can still see the lines. Next up is texture. I have never done texture before and it is a little daunting, but it's not like I'm working on the Sistine Chapel, right? Wish me luck!
I am wondering what product to use to fill in the very small, but noticeable gap between the wall and the fireplace? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I tried the palm leaves on my ceiling last year. Tested on a rock sheet, and it looked good. BUT, when it went up on the ceiling, the compound kept plugging the indents on the roller. Every 5 feet stroke, I had to wash off the roller to continue. The ceiling looked real nice, but it took forever! I must've done something wrong. The roller should plug up the indents on the pattern like it did.
