Man, this was so worth watching. I have a near new Samsung TV and a lovely old 70's stereo. I bought the convertor as mentioned in video 1 and it worked on normal TV but I could not get any sound from internet based prgrams like Netflix and Spotify. That PCM thing did the trick. Thanks again

If you have movies stored on a Thumb Drive and want to watch them on the TV via the USB port you might run into some latency issues or video/audio sync issues. This usually happens if you have a whole bunch of movies stored on the thumb drive. My fix for that is to use VCL Player as the default player for the movies. You can download it as a free app on your TV or computer. If the playback quality is not great or the background music is a little overpowering you can fix that by going to the Audio menu at the top of the program and scroll down to Audio Mode - Select Stereo and the sound quality will be much better. Also if you run into some sync issues you can go to the Tools Menu at the top to the program - Select Track Synchronization and you can fix any sync issues from there. Just make small adjustments and you should be able to correct the problem quickly. Good luck.
My tv is LG and I bought the digital audio converter, my tv doesn't have an aux input. The problem is that it does not give volume on the subwoofer, it is a system of 2 speakers and a Logitech subwoofer. I will do step by step what you have explained and hope to get it working. Hi Thanks for the complement. The output from the digital converter is the same as any other stereo source so your logitech system should be working with the subwoofer outputing anytime there is sound from the stereo speakers. Hey Roger thx for yr videos their great,I had a big problem connecting a fairly new Sony TV to a Denon AVR X250BT Receiver with both having E ARC Plugs,problem was when I adjust TV volume Denon volume would go up same time,using an Android TV setop box movie volume was far from adequate with TV and Denon at Max volume
Hi Fred. In situations when you can't get enough volume it usually means you have more than one independant volume control. It seems like your TV and receiver are working correctly the way they should with the TV remote automatically controlling the volume so that the TV and receiver volume controls act as one. Android TV boxes also have a volume control feature though. Try turing the Android TV volume to maximum, then going into the Remote Control Settings for the Android TV Box, add your TV as a device to control, and then set the Android TV remote to use the TV to control volume (Not the Receiver). thanks for the videos . I just bought a 50 inch 4k tv but now my older avr hdmi do not work on the new tv. Its a pioneer vsx-919 avr about 10 or more years old. I used to play my large library of music thru my pc hooked up to an HDMI port on the older avr but now I cant with the new tv. Any workarounds that you know of?
A good series of videos Roger. I'm currently working through this after the in-laws bought themselves a new Samsung TV but didn't like the quality of the audio. You'd think these things would be simple, and I guess they are if you splash the cash but all they really need is a simple set of stereo speakers and to get them hooked up. I think it might be the HDMI-ARC option, maybe, possibly... Subscribed.
Glad you liked the videos. The benefit of HDMI ARC is the seemless remote, Whatever they are using for a remote today will be what they will use with an ARC speaker. I have gone down the path with In laws of trying to give them nice sound at a good price, and in the end the only thing that really mattered to them was not having to learn anything new, no matter how simple. I am a big fan of powered speakers I find that you get better overall sound than a soundbar for a given price point. Unfortunately some really good affordable brands like Fluance, Kanto, Edifier, and Audioengine do not support ARC and are not supported by most Universal remotes or Cable Company Remotes. Klipsch and Elac do offer some really good powered speaker models with ARC connectivity but the price is a little steep. Soundbars do not suit everybody's space, or sonic and aesthetic tastes but do offer the lowest cost HDMI ARC options, The next step up price and sound wise is a budget receiver with some carefully chosen entry level passive speakers..... but the clutter...... extra box and more wires. Which brings us back to Klipsch The Fives and the Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 if you have the 600 bucks or so, there is a lot to like, I haven't personally tested either so here's some links to reviews.

hope you cam help i have a new samsung 80" tv with the arc but my surround sound stereo is a old song prob 14 years old now and only has a optical spot for audio. is there a way i can get my old sony to turn on and off and work with sound through my new tv with one remote? my wife hates i have 3 different remotes for one tv!
Hi you have a couple of options. iI you use a cable TV box or a video streamer like a Fire TV stick the remotes for those devices can likely also be set to control the TV and receiver. If you don't have either then a universal remote like the first one featured in this video czcams.com/video/G8-suocygjA/video.html will easily control both devices.
Hello Roger, great videos! However, I'm still struggling to connect my old Onkyo TX-SR573 receiver to my Samsung TV using a digital optical cable and control the volume with the Firestick remote. It seems that my problem lies in the TV settings, specifically in the Speaker settings, where the receiver option remains greyed out. No matter what I try, I can't seem to activate that option. The other two options available are TV Speakers and External Speakers. Do you have any recomendations?
Hi Igor the external speakers option should be selected. Also check to see if there is an audio out, or digital audio out setting which should be set to optical.

Hi Christine If the receiver has the words "optical digital in" then it must also have a socket for an optical cable. This is the best connection from the TV for you to use you just connect an optical cable directly from the TV to the receiver. No converters are necessary and surround sound will continue to work. The optical socket on your receiver may have a removable plastic cover. If there is something that looks like a lttle square peg then just pull it out. The other type of optical socket has a spring loaded flap that is flush with the back, it hinges inwards out of the way when you plug in the cable optical cables need to be oriented correctly in order to snap in place. This can be a little tricky especially when it's hard to see the back of the unit where the cable pugs in.

Hi Normally the symptom that you describe is caused by an incompatible audio format from streaming services. I find this surprising since your Yamaha receiver can decode digital surround sound but the system may be sending it something it can't handle. This receiver should be connected to the TV with and optical cable If that is what you are doing already, then check the audio settings on the streaming source. First see if it works in Stereo "PCM" mode. if that is OK then try the different surround sound settings.
How would connecting a tv to a avi dvd player work ?
AVI DVD players have more inputs and outputs than regular DVD players. These are for connection to camcorders and computers. The connection to a TV is the same as any other DVD player. Connect the HDMI output of the player to any one of the HDMI inputs of the TV.

I watched all 4 series with intense focus but there was no mention of multi speakers. I have a new Sony Google tv and a old pioneer VSX 305 with out HDMI after looking at your instruction do you recommend the HDMI adaptor or just RCA straight>
I see that your Receiver has no HDMI or optical. I normally recommend using the HDMI ARC adapter in these cases because the RCA out on many TV's is terrible. I have tried a few Sony's though, and found the RCA out on them to be fine, so in your case try the RCA out first if it sounds good to you then keep using it.

Hello Roger, great videos! I have a problem and maybe you can help. I own a new Hisense U8H and I have it connected to a soundbar using a HDMI cable (the cable that came with the soundbar is HDMI 2.0) my problem is whenever I turn the power off on my devices they all turn off but about 5 seconds later my TV will turn back on. Any idea how to fix this problem?

It is possible one of your devices is sending a message to the TV which is being wrongly interpreted as a turn on command. It is also possible that you have a conflict between a turn off command sent over HDMI from one of the devices and an On/Off command sent by an IR remote. This may arise if you are using a universal remote such as the one supplied with a cable box or video streamer and have the HDMI control turned on, on that device and the remote programmed to control the TV independently.
Try disconnecting any devices other than the soundbar from the TV and use only the TV remote to power them both on and off and see if the problem persists. If just these 2 devices do not turn on and off properly in this simple configuration, then try looking through the TV menus for the HDMI or CEC functions, some TVs have a setting to disable the turn on/off from other devices. If you are using the TV remote then you do not need this feature.
If the TV - soundbar combo works ok, then re connect the other devices in turn to see when the problem re appears. When the problem comes back disable HDMI control / CEC on the last connected device. If the problem persists and happens only with the soundbar connected
Then you may have a non-fixable compatibility problem. This kind of flakey behavior is unfortunately all too common with HDMI. Manufacturers have some latitude as to how to implement the standard and sometimes compatibility issues arise.
If this is the case you can use an optical audio connection to the soundbar and a universal remote to control the volume, mute and power.

Hi Joseph, Thanks for checking out my video. I'm assuming your LG TV is exactly the same as mine which means that the only way to connect it to a surround sound system is through an optical cable. The optical cable only works in one direction and only supports audio. To see the Sony sound system menu you must connect an HDMI cable between the HDMI OUT of your sound system (Which is also the ARC socket) to one of the HDMI inputs on your TV. My TV only has 2 HDMI inputs so if yours is the same, both inputs may be in use already. The good news is you only really need the menu for setup, so you can "borrow" one of the HDMI connections and once the surround sound is set up, you can reconnect whatever you had before. On the Sony receiver that I have, once you select the correct TV input, and turn on the receiver, the menu appears after about 30 seconds. I hope this helps, Good Luck!
I have a Pyle PT588AB Receiver I’m trying to use, but it does not have an ARC HDMI and I’m trying to just use it for my Phillips smart tv. I run Hulu and other apps just straight from the apps downloaded on the tv, and I can’t get any picture or sound. I plugged in my Xbox and was able to get that to work, but through the HDMI in and HDMI back out to my TV. What do I need to do to get it to work for just my TV?

I although this adapter may be powered off the TV using the provided USB cable, I recommend using a separate USB power block (Smartphone Wall charger) to avoid audio pops when the TV powers on and off.
Connect the optical cable which is included, between the TV and the adapter then run a standard RCA audio cable (not provided) from the adapter to the receiver inputs. This will work well but you will need to use the receiver remote for the volume and mute.
If you only want to use a single remote, you’ll need a learning remote like this one.

Hi Roger, could you please help me I have a smart, Samsung television and an old Bose lifestyle model 28 surroundsound the TV and the Bose system both have optical connections. I’ve set my TV to PCM and still no sound. I have also tried a second way my TV is equipped with arc, but my Bose sound system has no HDMI connections whatsoever so I bought the TENDAK extractor and tried hooking it up that way still no sound. I have also turned white ARC and my CEC on.

It’s unlikely that there is a problem with your TV or it’s settings, the only thing I can suggest to try on the TV end is to do a full audio reset which you can find in the sound menu of your TV it might be under advanced sound settings. For the Bose System, it’s common when we use a piece of old equipment that the setting and configuration done on a past setup are not right for what we now have, so before we put it in a new system it’s usually best to do a full system reset first. Once you have done that, I would recommend that you try the optical connection to the unit first since optical is generally more reliable than HDMI and you will bypass any potential issues with the adapter. How would I go about hooking up an Apple TV and curved Samsung monitor to my av receiver; there is no ARC
Hi Josh, Since your monitor has no audio output, and the newer Apple TV's don't have either, you need a splitter to seperate the audio from the video The type to get depends on how recent your AV receiver is. If it supports Dolby Atmos or Dolby True HD then an HDMI splitter is a good way to go. The output of the Apple TV goes to the input of the splitter and one output of the splitter goes to the Monitor the other to the receiver. If you have an older Dolby Digital receiver. (Even if it has HDMI inputs ) Then ir's best to use an HDMI Audio extractor and take the optical output from that, and run it to an optical input of the receiver.

Hi. i have my tv set up to a sky q box via an optical cable and a audio convertor allowing me to use 3.5mm plug in headphones. Sky channels work. Hd don't can you help please. Thanx.
Hi The most likely reason for audio working on some channels but not others is that the sky channels are stereo and the hd ones are encoded for surround sound which your stereo adapter can’t decode. Go to “Settings” on the Sky Box, select “Setup” then “Audio Visual” then “Digital audio output- optical” Most video boxes have a setting that says “PCM” or “Stereo” which would fix this issue for sure. I don’t have a sky box, so I checked the online manual and it seems there is only a choice of “normal” “Dolby Digital” or “Dolby Digital +” The manual doesn’t say what “normal” means but online forums suggest it is the same as PCM. You definitely don’t want Dolby Digital or Dolby digital+ so try normal and see if fixes the problem.
Hi sir, I have a Sony smart tv with samsung 5.1 ch sound bar, problem is sometimes the audio switches itself from sound bar to tv and tv to sound bar. I'm using HDMI ARC connection. And have tried using different HDMI cables. I'm not able to figure out the problem 😕. I think have come to right place to find the solution. Help me.

You have a very unusual problem. Having the sound switch back and forth during viewing with no user intervention is very puzzling. I wonder if the Sony and Samsung are getting their signals crossed during sound mode changes in the source video stream. You could try changing the setting of Sound Mode Sync in the TV sound Menu. Otherwise try updating the software to the latest to get all the newest bug fixes.
Hi I've followed your videos but I'm struggling getting the sound from the speakers there is sound coming out its just not as loud as it should be ? Am I missing something 😕?
Hi Lou the normal cause of very low volume is that you have more than one device managing the volume. The one you are trying to adjust and an unexpected one which is set to low. Try increasing the volume on all your remote controls and volume knobs to see which one might be limiting you. (It could be the video source, the TV an adapter or the receiver. )
Hey Roger, you’ve been really helpful but please do reply to me if you can! I’m purchasing a Samsung M7 monitor which has no hdmi arc but two hdmi ports. It has no rca ports or audio output ports so it’s quite difficult to connect an external speaker. I was wondering if I connect the HDMI to a HDMI audio extractor and then connect the extractor via rca cables to my speakers (Logitech Z333) on their input rca ports, would it work?
But rather than that, as an alternative im thinking of just getting a soundbar with hdmi arc and directly connecting it to my monitor that has only normal hdmi. Would it still work if my monitor doesn’t have hdmi arc port but normal hdmi?
Hi Phil Your first idea, connecting an audio extractor to the logitech speakers, will work. The ARC input on a soundbar will not work for you. Be sure to get an audio extractor that will pass your video signal the cheapest ones are only 1080p not 4K.

Your home theater system should have an optical input, the TV has the output. If you connect a good optical cable between the TV output and the Home theater input you should get sound provided the home theater input is set to the right optical input, and the volume is turned up. (The TV remote will likely not control the home theater volume) There isn't much that can go wrong. You can check in the TV sound menu that the Digital Audio Out volume is not set to zero.
If nothing works for you, try connecting the optical output of a DVD player or Blue Ray player to the same optical input of the audio system. If it doesn't work either the cable or audio system may be defective. Hope this helps, Good Luck.

We have a lake property and we use satellite tv. I have a stereo receiver and I run the tv sound through the stereo and it works great. We have a Roku tcl tv and we get good cellular internet and the tv is connected. When watching, say youtube, I can only get sound from the tv speakers. I watched your video and bought an hdmi adapter and plugged in the rca plugs into a different port than the satellite but whether I use hdmi arc or regular hdmi I can’t get sound through the stereo. It’s not critical, but I would like to solve the problem. Any ideas.

From your description I’m guessing that the HDMI adapter that you have, is the type that extracts the audio from an HDMI source such as a DVD or cable box and is not a specific ARC adapter. These two types work on different signal lines and are not interchangeable. A specific ARC adapter like this one will probably work for your TV, though I have never tested it with a Roku TV

It is possible however that you do have an ARC adapter and it just doesn't work properly with your model of TV.
The most reliable solution for your setup is an optical connection, which is free of the weird compatibility problems that arise with HDMI, due to manufacturers implementing the standard differently. Get an optical adapter like this one, and you’ll have an extremely reliable never fails connection and superb audio quality.

The Digital Audio Output setting on the TV needs to be set to PCM (your TV may call it LPCM)
A USB power block (Phone Charger) is needed for power and is not included.

I have an old surround sound system(Panasonic) and have a new TV that has HDMI ARC. My surround sound has no optical hook up. What type of adapter will allow all 5 speakers and amplifier to work?

A surround sound system with no optical input is one that uses the old style matrix surround. This will most likely be capable of creating a surround effect from a stereo source. You may also be able to choose from some selection of surround sound effects. You can use an HDMI ARC adapter like the one in the link below to convert the ARC digital signal and make it usable for your system.

Set the input switch to coaxial and connect an RCA cable (not provided) between the TV and the adapter, and an optical cable from the adapter to the surround sound system. The adapter can normally be powered from the TV USB port but any USB power plug will work.

A scenario that you didn't cover happened to have been mine. I'm going from my desktop computer (a Power Mac cylinder) to a large monitor. My computer has one HDMI output as expected [but 4 Thunderbolt 2 ports (Mini DVI) if I need them] and the monitor has one HDMI-IN and one DVI-IN. I ran an HDMI cable from the computer to the monitor HDMI-IN. I get audio and video to the monitor. BUT if I want to insert my Samsung N-550 in to the audio, I tried computer HDMI to SndBar HDMI-IN, and then an HDMI cable from SndBar HDMI (ARC) to monitor HDMI-IN. But got absolutely nothing. NO video & NO audio. NO clues. I tried the first way where I got both to the monitor directly, but instead plugged in an AUX cable (mini-phono plugs at both ends) and used them going from the computer to the SndBar. I'm guessing that the plugging in of the aux cable into the earphone jack of the computer shuts off the sound going to the monitor through the HDMI cable and it then goes straight over to the soundbar with a simple analog signal. It works fine, and I can control my audio from my computer keyboard! But why wouldn't it work using the two HDMI cables? Is it because my monitor doesn't have an ARC input? But video wasn't going through, either, from the SndBar to the monitor. Shouldn't it have?

Mixing computer with consumer gear can be a bit hit and miss since they were designed for different digital ecosystems and the manufacturers do not test this kind of interoperability. In your case I'm guessing the problem is HDCP content protection. Your Samsung Soundbar will check your monitor for compliance before it sends it any video and I bet that is where the failure is. I'm guessing if you tried using a TV for a monitor it would work. Your workaround is fine except audio from computer sound cards is not the best. You should be able to use an HDMI splitter like this one and take advantage of the better digital to audio conversion in the soundbar.

Thanks for the response Roger. I gave up the TV a couple of years ago due to the lousy programming and high prices. If I can't find it on the internet, I don't need to see it. So does HDCP stand for High Definition Content Protection? I've never heard of it. Why would it need to be protected and from what? I know analog audio is inferior to digital but my computer doesn't have Toslink. Might the problem be that the monitor (a 32" curved Samsung) doesn't have an ARC input on the HDMI-IN? How do I tell if my HDMI cable can transfer ARC? Some are saying that if you use that function you have to use an "ARC" compatible HDMI cable. I don't know how to tell. NONE of my HDMI cables have ARC stamped on them anywhere. If I use a splitter, does it split coming out of the computer with one cable going to the sound bar (IN) and the other going to the monitor? Does the DVI input on the monitor NOT carry audio? Would it be more compatible with the HDMI-ARC output from the sound bar to go to the monitor? I didn't try it because somehow I think the similarity of the the two plugs ends their compatibility and the pin-outs are different for each.
I have another Sansui sound bar (HW-F450) hooked to my iMac 27" with just the one HDMI cable. It works fine as advertised. What a simple hookup that was!
Hi Brian HDCP does indeed stand for High Definition Content Protection. It is intended to prevent unlimited perfect copies from being made. That lousy content is considered very valuble by the rights owners Your monitor does not have an ARC input but even if it did the ARC signal is audio only. Any HDMI cable made since 2009 will support ARC so your cable is most likely good. The splitter would be connected as you describe. DVI is a video only standard no audio. The soundbar ARC socket is an input not an output, ARC used different pins and protocol than the straight HDMI audio which is probably what your iMac is outputting.
Old Samsung tv Optical cable to soundbar. When I turn on External speaker. No sound at all can u tell me how to fix this?

Check the sound menu, look for Digital Audio Out, if options for this are available, make sure it is enabled, and set to PCM or Stereo. If the soudbar has multiple inputs check that optical is selected and that the volume is not muted. Although optical is very reliable, ocasionally the cable is defective or even the optical output on the TV. Hopefully this is not the case with your TV.
Thanks Roger. I did fix this. I did not have hdmi1 to tv. Roku soundbar now works and tv sound on sound bar. But all volume must be controlled on the Roku remote
Hi Rodger..I got a small sound bar for our Sanyo tv. The t.v may be about 7 years old give or take. Today I tried hooking it up. It supplied an audio cable and a digital optical cable. I first tried the audio cable that I plugged into the aux on sound bar then into the digital audio output on t.v. I set the aux mode on the sound bar and all I got was humming. So..then I looked at the digital optical cable. I had a place to plug it into the sound bar but didn’t have one on the t.v. I need help!

The digital audio output of your TV is SPDIF coaxial, which is common on CD players but quite rare on TVs.. This connection is physically the same as an RCA audio connection but will make a buzzing sound if connected to an audio aux input. You will need a coaxial to optical adapter to make this work,

Connect a single RCA cable from the single (most likely orange) RCA socket on your TV to the single orange RCA socket on the adapter labelled “Coaxial In”. Set the selector switch to “Coaxial” then connect an optical (also known as Toslink) cable between the socket labelled “SPDIF out” and the optical input of your soundbar. It should all work perfectly, once the power is connecter to the adapter.

Hi Roger. I did exactly what you said. To power up the adapter do I plug the USB end into the t.v. or the sound bar. First time around unfortunately it didn’t work ☹️ I had the adapter first plugged into the sound bar to power up..nothing…so I plugged it into the USB port on T.V. Still didn’t work. I know this is simple but this female mind is struggling.
Plugging the USB in to the TV usually works but not always. Plugging it in to the soundbar will definitely not work, If the TV USB won't power up the adapter, then use a USB power adapter (try the one you use for charging your phone before buying one to make sure it works). That should power up the adapter fine. If it doesn't the adapter is defective. If the adapter powers up and there is still no sound, make sure the digital audio out is enabled in the TV sound settings.

I want to listen vinyls from the stereo and look tv without sound. The Onkyo is connected with tv by hdmi arc. The turntable is at Aux of Onkyo. When I listen music from Aux and try to change source on tv then the music from aux stops and I listen music from the new source on tv.

Hi Mano, Your's is a classic example of why full automation isn't right for everyone. The equipment is doing exactly what the designers intended it to do, not what you want it to do. Fortunately there are workarounds. You have to go to the receiver settings and turn off CEC, this has the unfortunate side effect of stopping HDMI ARC from working so you will have to connect the receiver to the TV with an optical cable. For stereo the sound quality will be identical to ARC. Keep the HDMI cable connected so that you can still view the receiver on screen setup when needed. The other side effect is that the remote control for the TV will no longer control the TV sound volume and mute. If you don't want to use the receiver remote to control the volume of the TV and you have cable TV or satelite or use a video streamer like a Fire TV stick check the settings for the video source and see if the remote can be set to control the receiver without CEC.

@@manosrox8959 Hi Manos the most likely problem is in the receiver settings. I am not familiar with your specific receiver however I downloaded the manual and see that turning off HDMI control - CEC is not a one click thing as it is with some other receivers. Firstly Onkyo have given the brand name RIHD to CEC, for your purposes they are the same. According to my reading of the manual under the HDMI settings "Audio TV out" must be set to off, "Audio Return Channel" should be set to off, "TV control" should be set to off and "HDMI Control (RIHD)" should be set to off. with all this turned off connect the TV optical output to Optical 2 "TV/CD" and the TV/CD input button on the remote should select this input by default.

The Sat Box and the DVD player should be connected directly to the HDMI inputs on the TV. Use the TV optical (SPDIF) output for the amplifier. The TV and DVD optical outputs can be connected to two of the inputs on the switch and the optical to audio adapter is connected to the output. You’ll have a spare port if you want to add a music streamer later
Your 4 port HDMI switch will only help you if you have more video devices than HDMI inputs on your TV, so if you added a Fire TV Stick, Laser Disk, and Xbox for example, you can connect them to the HDMI switch, The sound out of the TV optical port will automatically work for all of them.
