At the beginning of the episode, Bulma mentions the no-longer-existent genre.
Did you know it’s actually awful?
A clever hint that Piccolo was never speaking to Gohan was that he was able to pronounce the original Japanese name for the Special Beam Cannon (Makankōsappō), something he never does in the rest of the abridged series.
You know, I noticed he never could pronounce it properly in the main DBZA series, but I never put that hint together.😅
19:05 He pronounced the name correctly. That's how you KNOW it's an hallucination and not the real Piccolo.
In all fairness, this is ridiculously pedantic to point out, but it's a hallucination. Not an hallucination. H is a consonant, not a vowel.
God the editing out of the music during Trunks’ SSJ transformation scene made it all the more haunting
Lauren, there's an easter egg at 25:03 you may have missed. In Season 2, remember when Vegeta discovered Gohan had stolen the Dragonball and his rage could be heard all around the planet, through space, and in heavan? That scene then jumped forward 20 years to the clip I timestamped for you, where future trunks could hear Vegeta's scream also. They brought it full circle in this movie. 🤣
oh dip! that's hysterical
Thanks for the reminder! I did miss that.
@@ChicagoReacts Oh dip? Hold on, have you spent time in NY?
Just FYI, the tribute at the beginning was for an incredibly talented animator who was responsible for a lot of early Rooster Teeth projects, specifically fight scenes in Red vs. Blue and was the creator and main animator for RWBY. He had a lot of other insanely good personal projects back in the days of Machinima as well like Dead Fantasy.
It's rumored that he requested to play Adult Gohan in the abridged movie but died before the project got started. He even said himself he was a huge fan of DBZA and even admitted he used their episides as background nouse when animating for inspiration.
Before the fall of RWBY
@@nutjobification i don't think it fell off as hard as people say. The fights get crazy good season 5+. As with all shows there are growing pains but I still think 4/5 get undeserved bad raps.
Trunks mentioning how he'd received his sword from a guy named Tapion is a reference to an entirely different Dragon Ball Z movie, which never received the Abridged treatment by TFS.
19:48 as others mentioned: they wiped out country music
earlier in the episode, Bulma mentions something about it being gone, and in an upcoming episode there's a joke about it too
The Episode sets up the Joke and here they continue it as well as other set ups for Jokes. Idk who told her to watch this now or why, but this is clearly not the right place to watch it.
There's another little easter egg at 24:46 that you wouldn't know. The voice here is Kyle Herbert on the radio, the actual voice of Teen/ Adult Gohan doing a cameo for this special. In another special I think, they have the voice of Piccolo/ Vegeta have a cameo as well. It was so cool they made this happen.
Funi mostly liked TFS. And based on that scene in super even the Toei staff probably was aware of it. Only the Toei execs are a*holes about it
Yeah the super android movie lol he’s listed as “djsexidillionaire”😂😂
@@specialnewb9821 iirc they talked about how funimation brought them in to voice act for their respective characters in the movie that was playing during the buu saga martial arts tournament but Toei animation shut it down once they found out.
Except Sean.
He absolutely detested TFS.
Said only he deserved to be the voice of Goku.
If I remember right, in the Christmas Tree of Might, Kyle voiced Santa as well
I think the reason Bulma couldn't give Gohan another arm is that she didn't have access to her equipment to make one good enough for fighting shape. It'd be a hindrance
Bulma taking a swing at Gohan makes me laugh every time, and your reaction is perfect. That woman is an absolute menace.
Also, yeah it's kinda funny that the credits have the doctor who song still but they had to get rid of the song during Trunks's transformation - which was also from doctor who
right?
The original video from TFS still has them. Lauren had to mute them to avoid getting demonized, I'm assuming.
@@parker469a yup
Team4star did another abridged version of an anime called hellsing that i would really love to see your reactions too. Watching you watch these has brought me immense joy and i dont know why because i generally think reaction videos are kinda dumb, but for some reason chicago reacts just does it right and i cant put my finger on it. i believe her name was kelsie who origionally got me hooked on these (i miss her please bring her back) but it was you reacting to my favorite internet nonsense about my favorite show that got me to become a member. Keep up the good work guys. You and kit are keeping up the good fight and killing it!
Anytime Kelsey wants to return we'd be happy to have her, but her career started to really take off, so she had to leave to work on that.
But I'm glad that you've stuck with us, and have become a member! I'll be more than happy to add Hellsing abridged. Should I wait until after I'm finished DZBA or should I start incorporating it into the weekly rota?
@@ChicagoReacts I'd wait until after dragonball? I don't know that's up to yall I suppose, but congrats to kelsie!
@@ChicagoReacts I should note that Hellsing Ultimate Abridged has an even more dramatic shift in quality over time than DBZA, given that it was only released annually on Halloween, meaning it took roughly a decade for all 10 episodes to be released. So if you do choose to react to it, be aware that some of the earlier episodes can be... rough, particularly compared to the later entries.
Yeah, he's around 13 at the start of this movie, some months pass with gohan, 3 years later he's nearly 17 when he fights the androids, and a few months of recovery later hes officially 17 when he meets Goku
Two points to bring up. The genre of music being eliminated joke is from an episode one or two episodes down the line, I think they released before this one. Also I'm pretty sure the actual reason why Trunks survived that fight was the writers wrote themselves into a corner in giving him one last fight before going back into the past so they had to reach for a way to make sure he survived. Glad you're very much enjoying the series!
Well, as you heard them say when Gohan was still alive, Trunks was 13. After the timeskip from Gohan's death, he was 17 (the cyborgs refer to the Z Fighters as 'those guys from 17 years ago', which was when Trunks was just a baby).
Trunks supposed to be 16, then turns 17 in time for his second trip and 18 in the chamber. Think thats how it's supposed to work
The past and present are semi linked. So Trunks actually waited three years to come back, so he's 20 by the start of the Android Saga
@@astercorsiglia9391Untrue, else the “Hey mom, ever meet DAD!?!” Conversation would’ve happened already. I know that’s how it worked super, but this came out before that was a thing. He wouldn’t have had on the same clothes and it’s mentioned the Time Machine isn’t great at hours so it’s likely he went straight from Killing Freeza and his dad to when the androids showed up here. Plus, you aren’t still growing at 20. Males still are at 16-17. That’s why him being taller after he comes outta the chamber is a point that’s made by 17 in the epilogue.
I will always tear up during Trunks' transformation scene. Kaiser did such a phenomenal job with voicing Trunks.
Does the Trunks finding out scene not have the sad music anymore? That’s such a shame, it was masterfully put together with that
It's a Dr. Who theme (cause time travelling Trunks), and as a consequence under copywrite.
@@Tuning3434I know, but it’s not alone in that. Wish they would just claim monetization and move along.
if you go to TFS’s channel, the music is still there in the video
The music is still there, she is the one that muted the music for the reaction video
youtube made me take it out
I noticed they used Final Fantasy X lines “this my story” as it was told by Tidus and here Gohan and Trunks did the same. Interesting.
There's a video called "but Goku is a terrible father" that i recommend to see some scenes of Goku interacting with Gohan in the actual show if you're ever interested, though it may have spoilers beyond where Abridged ends, I forget
The Trunks interjections in this are golden, kind of amazing how they can weave comedy and actual drama together into one brutal scene. KaiserNeko had to have shredded his throat doing that scream when he went Super Saiyan.
You have to lose someone you care about to get the power to protect them. Definitely tragic
It's interesting how this special kinda shows how Piccolo was actually kind of a not so good influence on Gohan, too- growing up to be a self-destructive loner who pushes unreasonable expectations onto a traumatized child, mentally scarring him for life as a result 🤔
This is not to hate on Piccolo or Future Gohan, but their relationship to their respective pupil is def layered like that
Roshi is immortal by all accounts so he can wait a long time
If your 13-year-old can fly and shoot lasers, I don't think he needs a seat belt.
One of the brilliant things about this arc in both Abridged and the original is how they set up Trunks and Vegeta.
Trunks has zero faith in his own abilities and believes teamwork is the only way to win. And that makes sense given the world he grew up in.
Vegeta, on the other hand, is ridiculously overconfident in his own abilities and sees zero value in teamwork.
It makes for such an interesting and relatable conflict between them.
they have much to teach each other it seems. maybe they'll meet in the middle someday
@@ChicagoReacts Maybe. But this Vegeta we're talking about.
Don't worry, Trunks and his mam will see each other again. Multiveres theory just means that his original timeline won't change, and him going back just makes another one. When Trunks travels back to his time, he is traveling back to his own timeline.
It was country music. It will be a joke coming up in the next couple episodes. You'll see. Also in the special 18 did step in front of 17 but she actually hit Trunks with her blast. It wasn't friendly fire.
17:24 About your question, the answer is no; Ozaru keep any scars the Saiyan has before transforming and vise versa. That being said, after seeing how Freeza heals after transforming, Goku fusing with Vegeta healing them, it's possible that if Gohan became an Ozaru immediately after losing his arm he'd probably grow it back.
31:16 - They'll be able to see each other again, just FYI. Trunks can return to his original time.
The multiverse theory line refers more to the fact that whatever events Trunks changes in the past will not effect his future because he's creating a separate branch in the timeline.
So Bulma was standing there, as if waiting to see if the world would change around her if Trunks was successful. But as soon as he disappears and nothing happens, she realizes that things run on multiverse rules.
You missed Vegeta's scream from Namak bending time
yes I did. But it has since been pointed out to me, and I feel like a fool
I believe there is a deleted scene of Gohan doing the deed with Bulma
Although he isn't shown aside from this TV special and briefly in DB Super, Future Gohan is my absolute favorite character. And Trunks going SSJ is probably the saddest transformation imo
lol... the Doctor Who references TFS uses give me joy.
It’s not the Doctor Who theme. It’s original piece Called DR. Cha La First Hwy you know a remix of the Dragon Ball Z first OP?
Gohan inherited from Piccolo the art of being homeless.
19:49 The genre they wiped out was country music. It's a somewhat reoccurring joke if you've paid attention to trunk's dialogue in the main timeline and Bulma's dialogue at the beginning.
in order to become great ape they first need their tail and then moonlight( wich can be created artificialy)
5:52 She looked.
19:52 Did you miss the part when Bulma said she missed Country?
Another bang reaction! I loved this. 😂
Edit: no matter what version, seeing Trunks exhibit the Super Saiyan power after Gohan dies is still incredibly powerful and will always make me tear up.
I always found it so interesting how Cyborgs 17&18 in Trunk's past were so evil and ruthless, but the ones in the current timeline are A LOT more chilled out.
Well the cyborgs in trunks timeline never met cell 😂😂
It was country music that they got rid of for good 😂
amazing
@@ChicagoReacts Country music is a crime and it needs to sit in the corner and think about what it’s done
The movies are pretty fun you should watch the other ones they are very entertaining.
Classic DBZ: SSJ can only be achieved by the pain of loss.
New DBS: Tingly feeling on your back.
The universe 6 sayians needed a cop out
31:57 funny you mentioned muting this dr who music but didn't mention needing to mute the dr who music from Trunks' transformation scene lol. Glad to see this reaction tho, one of the 3 dbza episodes/specials that always gets me teary-eyed no matter how many times I see it
I mute what the youtube makes me mute. I always try to upload it without edits first. I'm glad you liked the video!
@@ChicagoReacts oh I get that and fully understand having to mute things. I just found it funny to see which one warranted a verbal response lol
can't wait for the next episodes, they're my favorite.
Oh man im pissed the song got taken out for us. The song fits so well with the scene at 22:30 it gives a lot more emotion
I just realized that Trunks knows that the androids are stronger in the past timeline he goes to, because those ones were able to break his sword, but the others weren’t
It's odd tho.
In the actual show, the canon episodes later in the buu saga, trunks did become super saiyan without *any* effort, loss, whatsoever. Not sure if this movie is supposed to be canon, i don't think kt is, but it is still a detail i wish they paid more attention to when creating the show
Pretty sure it's just what Gohan thinks. Vegeta didn't lost anything (except his pride i guess lmao) and he was a super saiyan too.
Multiverse theory doesn't mean they won't see each other again. It means any changes he makes won't impact their timeline. It'll just create a new one. He can still come back.
Hahaha, he’s a Saiyan, seatbelts don’t matter, you could throw him through a mountain made of iron and he’d be okay. What is a car crash to a true warrior? A wasted car!
If you think it sucks that the pain of loss is required to transform into a super Saiyan, just wait until you see what it takes in dragon Ball super.
oof. Now I'm worried.
To be fair on that one, Vegeta also pulled SSJ out of his ass
@@jogadorjnc Not to mention two * spoilers *. Let's be honest, DBZ waited for no-one to play fast and loose with that rule.
To be fair, Z has 2 glaring examples in buu saga pulling out their butts
29:15 the original show never really explained how he survived that either. So TFS had to come up with some BS
She's in for heartbreak when she realizes everything in the last episode. Not spoiling anything.
Bulma is older than Gohan's dad...
Not by much
That thing where the narrator cuts in is foreshadowing I think
You know, that's a good point. Future Bulma built a freaking time machine in her garage, she should have easily been able to make Gohan an arm!
right?
Maybe Bulma just isn't very good at cybernetics. She is already good with electronics, robotics, and rocket science, cut her a break.
25:21 Don't worry, it actually makes even less sense than any other movie the series got.
25:52 Well, their job would've been to kill Goku, since Gero had a beef with him specifically. Everything else is just goofing off.
People saying goku is a good dad are coping. Hes ok at best. This still holds up to this day piccolo is the one helping with gohans kids while goku is absent...again. hes absent alot against his will....but also willingly alot as well. Hes not a good dad
"He wasn't wearing a seat belt!" He's half saiyan 😂
Trunks is like 17 in the current android saga i believe. he was 13 when this takes place. I might be wrong
Goku, in the actual show is a great dad. DBZA just turned to the irresponsibility that Goku has to eleven.
I loved your reaction to this and I love that DBZA made this particular movie funny. The original version is actually very depressing, especially when you remember that this is the original timeline, and that the only reason the cast is still alive in the show’s timeline is due to Future Trunks going back in time to warn everyone of 17 & 18
yeah that sounds super sad. But I might still go watch it on my own at some point.
I don't think it's a spoiler to say that multiverse theory doesn't necessarily mean he can't go back. It just means that him changing the past creates a separate timeline instead of changing the future he's from. Bulma concluded that it was multiverse theory because the world didn't instantly change into normal, saved by Trunks and Goku in the past, meaning wherever Trunks went back to was in a different timeline from the one she lives in.
You asked if Gohan would get his arm back if he transformed into a great ape. It would kinda make sense if he would because there's a lot of cell-growth happening there, but I assume he wouldn't. I've seen some Saiyans with scars transform into great apes, and they'd retain said scars before, during, and after the change. Also even if it COULD help him regrow lost limbs, Gohan's tail was permanently removed when he was little. Idk if it becomes impossible to regrow the tail because they reach a certain age, or the entire tail was cut off at a certain part like the tailbone or something.
Trunks at the start of this movie: 0
After first time-skip: 13
Training with Gohan: 13-14
Second time-skip: 17
Then in the series he ages one year in the time chamber. 👍
thank you!
Goku wasn't that great of a dad. He could've been worse sure, but he certainly wasn't great. We can only thank God for Chi-Chi being there to really raise him.
Wait what happened to the music?
In the scene where Trunks turn super Saiyan what happened to that song? Is it actually copyrighted?
Yes, it's Dr. Who's theme.
The ending of The Return of Cooler will spoil one of the developments in episode 56, so I personally would save it for after that, as that is also a good spot to get a few more movies/specials out of the way.
The one you really should watch after 42 is Android 13 movie though.
okay, I'll try to find it!
In the Abridge version TFS make Goku look dumb and a bad parent for comedy purposes but in the original Dragon ball Z, Goku is actually a good father. (A Warrior Father that is teaching his son to become a warrior that is)
Big ups to Gohan resisting Bulma’s advances… shame though, this timeline could’ve had Chi-Chi having a grandson… if only :/
The word you were looking for is "Contradict" The narration contradicts the dialogue.
Poor Yamcha, while he was with everyone else mourning Goku in the original version.
Here in the abridged version he's already offed himself and aside from not knowing where New Namek is, the dragon can only bring someone back if they WANT to comeback.
10:14 nah....you are right XD
U probably should have watched as iv mentioned previously coolers revenge before they fought the androids and also the sequel return of cooler right after the episode of trucks killing freza
Interestingly in the manga this story appears much much later in the arc.
In the real story Piccolo is more like Gokus brother/Gohans uncle
Piccolo is only like 7-8 years older than Gohan, so he is kinda like his big brother rather than father
He’s still more of a father than a brother. At the end of the day he’s the one that watched Gohan grow, not both.
Actually, the ending theme is a legally distinct mashup of Doctor Who and Cha La Head Cha La: czcams.com/video/1iVu_WfkiyM/video.htmlsi=lagsPP2DDi7GuwMl
I can't imagine that any of the people who defend Goku as a father are actually parents themselves. Abridged does exaggerate Goku being a bad dad, but the reason they exaggerate it is because it's there in the show. All they had to do was make him seem to care a little less.
Goku clearly loves his family. He loves his friends too. He will fight for them and is even willing to die for them. But loving your kids doesn't automatically make you a good parent. That's like the bare minimum. Tons of really crappy parents would still die for their kids. To be a good parent you need to be there for them. You need to put them first, and Goku doesn't do that. He puts his desire to become stronger first. Period. You also need to listen to them, understand what it is that they like and support them in that, not try to mould them into a mini version of you.
Goku is a loving father, but he's not a good dad.
My son is 6. Goku is a way better dad than a lot of real ones. You seem to have not understood the story.
@@specialnewb9821 would you abandon your son for a couple years to focus on your passion? If your son didn't share your passion would you notice and support them in their passion, or would you just keep pushing them to do the thing you love?
@ezradanger From 1-4 Goku and Gohan hung out with no training. Thrn he died for his son. Revived and saved his son. Then while he was in traction Gohan demanded to go to Namek. Oh and btw in the manga and Kai, while Goku is enraged after Krillin's death he goes Super Saiyan AFTER Freeza says Gohan is next to die.
Then Gohan demanded to train to fight the androids. Training where he was once again hanging out with the two men he admired most.
In Cell did Goku project too much of himself to Gohan? Yes. But he was also right that Gohan was the only one who could beat Cell. Then he stayed dead because by being around, he was endangering his son and the earth.
By my count he abandoned his son to train for maybe 6 months until he died against Cell.
@@specialnewb9821 you didn't answer my questions.
@ezradanger After Cell, Goku accepted his son on his son's terms. So no, I don't think him being away for a year or so was a big deal and I don't think Goku pushed Gohan except 1 time when there were extenuating circumstances.
I think your position is based on your head canon and not what actually happened.
A lot of DragonBall is too goofy for my taste, but Future Trunks' story always gets me in the feelings.
Androids can have a little bit of theme park rides, as a treat.
they deserve it
Half saiyans don't really have tails anymore. canon reason is human genes are dominant there, real reason, toriyama got tired of drawingthem when they're not used, ever.
Just in your spare time, it would be cool if you checked out the actual movie so you could see the differences. Its a really fucking good movie. Its worth the original content to see it. One of my personal picks for movies in anime. People call it a tv special and I refuse to so theres that. I can't speak highly enough about the actual movie, though. They do it justice here, but its worth checking.
i mean every song related to trunks so far has been dr who xP
Damn it sucks that the audio was drowned out for you unless that was an explicit choice you made to avoid copyright. The Doctor Who backing track in the Gohan Death scene is one of the marvels of showing how serious TFS can make something feel when they want to. In fact this special took a long time to make because the head writer and editor Kaiserneko had a lot of trouble writing comedic bits for a special thats really dark and serious as History of Trunks is. Dragonball at its core is almost always comedic in a regard or two even when stakes are high so even in the original version this special is a very sad and dark story to show why Trunks in the serues doesnt play around and is appaled by other mainline characters brazen and sometimes downright stupid decisions even when they mean well. We all saw how he wasted no time putting Frieza and Cold in the recycled best buy home electronics department.
Just a lore bit, they cannot go ape form without their tails.
Androids actually had lives...they were kidnapped by Gero and turned into android (cyborgs😂)
The word you are looking for is refute
Goku was a nice father, not necessarily a good one, when he was around for the periods of time without a threat he was nice to gohan, which means that as a father he's like top... 5? 3? In the whole dragon ball anime universe But immediately all the shit that he put gohan through for no reason desqualifies him from being an actual good father automatically
The word you were looking for was "subvert"
hey thats me! :D
People will die on the hill of Goku being a perfect dad but even in the show he WAS more focused on fighting and being dead than his son. The show exxagerates but he does suck in those regards. I dont think Toriyama made him a bad dad on purpose its just what came across
Wdym more focused on training? He spent majority of his time with Gohan when he wasn’t dead. If you’re talking about the cell saga Gohan was literally the only one strong enough to beat cell. Goku’s not a perfect dad but he is not a bad father
You should look up the original on your own time. Gohan fighting 17 and 18 is actually a really great fight, but they had to cut it for the story flow.
About anime reaction…would you consider reacting to Fist of the North Star/Hokuto no Ken? I can’t believe there is no-one on CZcams who ever reacted to the series, even though it’s a classic (gotta blame how little success it got in the USA, while in Japan and Europe it was huge). You look like the kind of person who would not be turned off by a little violence
definitely not afraid of violence. I can at least look into it. Thank you for the suggestion!
21:50 subvert expectations?
"if they said how old he was..."
You haven't seen this episode yet, but at some point, Trunks (the one in the "main timeline") gets in a fight, and Bulma (in mom mode) asks if he needs anything, like a juicebox or a snack. Trunks replies that he's 18.
It IS confusing. In DBZA, at least, he's 17 when we first see him, but 18 when he comes back to help against the Androids again....despite the fact that THREE years have passed for everyone else.
oh good. I'm glad I didn't just miss it.
He's 18 because he just got done with the Hyper sonic lion tamer.
Also android 17 says he wants to be a park ranger. If you ever react to dragon Ball super remember this.
Do you have your own reaction channel? Or is this your only one?
I have reactions here, on Americans Learn and Chicanime.
Nope, Gohan would just be a giant ape with one arm.
Watch dragon Ball z Wrath of the Dragon it's where Trunks gets his sword you have to watch it
