    I like how Tom Paris had a habit of calling Captain Janeway "ma'am" whenever a "crunch time" situation came up in the series, but "Captain" on all other occasions. I think it was his way of acknowledging that they were in a difficult situation.

    When I see all these modern day remakes with female leads, I always come back to shows like this. Janeway isn’t some arrogant know it all that belittles everyone who dares mess up and constantly complains. She is a good and likable character that treats everyone like they are the same.

    • @Jokie155
      @Jokie155 Před rokem +1

      I'd say there's a very select few 'female leads' that genuinely fit into this category, which makes me weary about the generalization of all the others. And even then, it's rarely a constant running pattern in their writing.
      Dr Weir in Stargate Atlantis has a particularly egrigious scene in the episode '38 Minutes', but I wouldn't for a moment declare that to be the constant of her character. And oh wait, Janeway has had plenty of bossy, demanding, belittling moments of her own!
      It's almost as if this poor attempt to criticize modern media for actually remembering that people other than white men exist is completely flawed and a strawman at that. :/

    Poor Harry never got promoted before the series conclusion. When asked at a convention Kate Mulgrew said it was because for some reason there was a rule in the writers room of every Star Trek franchise, every bridge always had to have an ensign. Now that’s according to her and if I remember correctly. I didn’t notice on DS9 and can’t recall if that was always the case on the next generation or the OG Star Trek.

    I haven't seen it since it first aired but the plot of this episode threw this show off for me from the very start. Her first responsibility is to her crew. I remember thinking at the time she carried her interpretation of the Prime Directive way too far thus causing everyone to be stranded in deep space. For the rest of the series I kept wondering why the crew wasn't more angry with her for unnecessarily stranding them, ie choosing an alien race over those sworn to her and the ship.
