My father recently told me that his favorite Trek captain was Janeway. I was kind of surprised at first but now that I've rewatched some episodes of Voyager I can understand his viewpoint. Despite the horrible circumstances she and her crew find themselves in, Janeway radiates strength, confidence and authority. Kate Mulgrew really played this role to the hilt and made Captain Janeway into a powerful and compelling character without being too self-righteous or overbearing. She cares about her crew and always gets the job done, even if she sometimes has to resort to some questionable means in order to do it.
Janeway is amazing and saved her ship more times than i can count. That said, if not for Chakotay and his more diplomatic approach she would've broken her own neck sooner or later.

You know, I do think I get Janeway now. She’s considerate, intelligent, and even feminine. But there’s a limit to how far she’ll be pushed before she pushes back … and then she pushes back harder than you would have ever believed she could.
Janeway has ice running through her veins and she also has a warm heart, if that makes sense. She's a bad ass protector and the only captain who had the exact mix of being able to get a spaceship to survive a huge trip alone through a dangerous galaxy and also being able to moralize her crew to protect their humanity in the face of so much adversity and disconnection.
My great grandmother always said, "Be logical with the capacity for empathy, humility, humanity in your heart, and hold your morality not just for you but others." Her shortened version was "Cold hands warm heart!"

I do wish others wouldnt dismiss older things though, just cause theres 30 new shows on Netflix doesnt mean their the only things you should watch. Id rent a lot of older shows from the library.

Scenes like this should remind people that Star Trek Voyager and the Original Series were the heaviest, and had the most gung ho Captains. Captain Kirk and Captain Janeway are, in my opinion, the bravest, and most philosophical and introspective of all the Captains in Star Trek.
As much as I respect Janeway and understand there is much to be discussed about her actions as Captain, Mulgrew is absolutely flawless. She is an inspiration and if I ever came face to face with this behemoth of an actress I would quite simply collapse in a fit of admiration. Picard will always be my favourite Captain and Patrick Stewart my favourite actor, but Kate Mulgrew as Janeway was just a pleasure to watch.
I love Janewat. I called her the captain of loss causes. So many of her crew would been considered loss causes by starfleet. Yet she took them and turned them in to one of the finest crew in history of starfleet.
Watching Janeway always motivates me to work harder for my goals. She is such an inspiration and Kate Mulgrew is an amazing actress... Really enjoy watching this in quarantine :)

Janeway was an excellent captain, and has as much skill and gravitas as Picard or Sisko. Given the era of television at the time, it wasn't possible in what was seen as "precinct" television for huge character exploration and evolution, that was where Voyager didn't get to live up to its huge potential. Nevertheless Voyager and her crew had some shining moments of development after its initial seasons. It would have been good to see Voyager steadily wrecked as a ship over its journey with occasional repairs and patches, integrated with bits and bobs of other technologies to hold it together.

I love all of Star Trek, but Voyager is my favorite by far. It's so different from other Trek, and focused on seeking out new life and new civilizations. So ideal!

So many memories from my childhood watching Star Trek Voyager with my dad on the state run tv channel (they actually had a pretty awesome selection of tv shows). Captain Janeway was the perfect captain. And a young me had his first tv-crush on Seven of Nine
The toughness of nails is measured in Janeway. Voyager may have its problems as a series but some of the characters are among the best Star Trek has ever seen. Janeway, Seven of Nine and - I will die on this hill - Harry Kim.

He's not too interesting on his own, sure, but he's the type of character that makes everyone shine that's on screen with him and I think that should be paid tribute to. Without him, Tom Paris would've just been a lame jackass and Seven's character arc would've made a lot less sense.
Voyager was my first Star Trek, followed by Enterprise. I'm 28 years old, couldn't get past the first season of Next Generation. I understand that Patrick Steward is considered to have given the best performance as captain and after watching his name sake series I feel I understand why. That being said, Janeway will always be the captain when I think of Star Trek and I wouldn't have it any other way.
If you want to enjoy TNG and you don't like the first season that's understandable. It picks up around season 2 and really gets going in season 3, season 1 is considered the low point of the series. I suggest either looking up ratings for episodes (like on IMDb) to hand pick episodes you think will be good or just skipping to season 3. Of season 1 I would personally recommend the episode "Conspiracy" if you like sci-fi horror/mystery.
I know your comment was 2 years ago, but have you gave TNG another try past season 2? How did you like it? I had the same feeling about the first seasons, but I would be remiss if I didn't say the show is unbelievable past the first two seasons.
Captain/Admiral Janeway returns! Can't wait for Prodigy. Janeway is without a doubt, the most commanding presence and most bad ass starfleet captain ever. Don't play chicken with Janeway, you'll lose.
I love how Janeway above being a Starship Captain is really a scientist and knows her science probably better than any Captain you see on any of the other shows I mean yes they have engineers Etc but they don't do the kind of calculations that you see that Janeway does, janeway's breaking Point are her ship and its people she can live without her ship but she cannot live without her people, she knows that the odds in this case of them surviving or rather slim to put it mildly but she's willing to hedge your bet if it means getting these Intruders who have killed already one of her people, for her one is too many and as we see she uses her math skills and her captaining skills to get her people and her ship to safety and in the process she she exacts a very neat revenge for the crewman she's lost in the fact that these aliens left very late and one of their ships was blown up.
These are some good moments. You do miss the moment where I donate my entire crew to the Borg in exchange for better graphics on my Super Mario Bros Wii (it made for a better gameplay experience), but thank you for this content anyways. Brought back memories.
Janeway upon return home was elevated to the Rank of Admiral. This (headcanon) came after Mark Johnson her once fiance reunited, but revealed he'd had a daughter with his new wife. They kept up the friendship, but became strained as the "hero" Janeway recounted tales of Voyager and Starfleet to the child, angering her mother. "Aunt Kathy" stopped calling. Marc's Daughter Katheryn Johnson is now a Starfleet graduate. Marc died and Janeway didn't attend the funeral. Now retired Janeway gets an unexpected guest. Janeway lives in Indiana with two dogs, Amelia and Sally Ride. She enjoys decaff coffee (under doctors orders) and secretly using her prestige to keep up to date on Starfleet matters. Like reading a newspaper, an old custom, she likes to excuse it. When young Katheryn arrives to tell her she's been selected for a mission, Janeway knows all about it. Tuvok in fact was her tutor, but Janeway hasn't heard from him in a while. Her "Niece" shifts awkwardly. "Tuvok? Oh he's um. Well. He's supportive. Cagey, he's got a dry sense of humor. He's... " "He's Tuvok?" They both say together. They laugh. "We are going to the Delta Quadrant". There's silence and Janeway places her mug down. "I'd heard." "Figured you had. But I thought I'd tell you in person." "I'd heard of the project. It's a big undertaking" "It is, but as you always said, it's worth the risk. Exploration" "Does your mother approve?" Young Katheryn shifts her gaze. "I don't need her approval. Besides. You taught me all I need to know." " ... I didn't come to Mark's funeral... No. Let me finish. I didn't come, your mother objected yes, but.. She had reason. I got stranded on the other side of the Galaxy. I got people killed. I left your father for my career. I don't want you to. Well" Young Katheryn smiles. "I know." Janeway smiles and the two have a few hours before the shuttle arrives. As they leave they hug. "Katheryn." The words seem strange in Janeway's mouth. "Kathy. Just remember. Don't let them bully you. Don't let them shout you down. They're your crew. Look after them. They'll look after you. You're a family. Ok?"
This is actually one of my favorite scenes, but Tuvok's nonchalant attitude towards the situation still baffles me to this day. Tuvok is a man of logic and he strongly believes in Starfleet's laws. Even though I though Janeways decision in this moment was dope, balsy, and made for good drama it was indeed reckless, and Tuvok would have been well with in his right to relieve her of her command in this moment. So yeah, this is one of my favorite scenes, but Tuvok inaction kind of baffles me here. Janeway is known on a few occasions to blow her top when she has really been pressed up against a wall and even though Janeyway and Tuvok and good and longtime friends. Tuvok wouldn't allow that to get in the way of his sworn duties. Though Tuvok did on occasion break a few rules himself, but it was more out of sheer principal than it was logic. Like when he listened to the crews cries and went back for Chakotay and Janeway on that planet against his order to proceed towards home. I could ponder this situation all day. I absolutely loved this show. Still sit and binge watch it from time to time.
I feel like that Janeway speech is a perfect Voyager moment. Here's a heartfelt speech that would solve or justify any moment in The Next Generation. Other person: ok. But how about £UCK THEM! 24nd century human capacity meets 21st century pragmatism.
Janeway. She's a badass until she's not, then willingly tries to murder another Starfleet officer. When she crossed the line she did so spectacularly. When Chakotay and Tuvok say you are over the line, you ARE.
Seven points out the obvious problem, and I have to agree. the undine infiltrated the ship thereby forfeiting it's freedom and put the lives of Voyager at risk. why bother trying to return it to fluidic space when it would just infiltrate Voyager again. and again.
Janeway and the actor that portrayed her is actually movie, fiction and live tv history for being the First Female actor that where put in place in the highest leadership position and nobody is over her leadership

Seven was right when she said, "a lesson in compassion will do me little good if I am dead."
It was Janeway's compassion that saved her life. So it does more good than she realizes, but that is what her character growth is about.

Haven't watched voyager in years,always thought Janeway was a great captain,but forgot how great a captain she was.
Being a starfleet captain is no joke. A lot of responsibility and tough decisions and a lot of grit.

Kate absolutely was wonderful as the captain in Voyager.
My favorite captain of Star Trek all the times
I love how Janeway above being a Starship Captain is really a scientist and knows her science probably better than any Captain you see on any of the other shows I mean yes they have engineers Etc but they don't do the kind of calculations that you see that Janeway does, janeway's breaking Point are her ship and its people she can live without her ship but she cannot live without her people, she knows that the odds in this case of them surviving or rather slim to put it mildly but she's willing to hedge your bet if it means getting these Intruders who have killed already one of her people, for her one is too many and as we see she uses her math skills and her captaining skills to get her people and her ship to safety and in the process she she exacts a very neat revenge for the crewman she's lost in the fact that these aliens left very late and one of their ships was blown up.
These are some good moments. You do miss the moment where I donate my entire crew to the Borg in exchange for better graphics on my Super Mario Bros Wii (it made for a better gameplay experience), but thank you for this content anyways. Brought back memories.

I grew up calling Janeway "Captain Mom."... I think her character would appreciate that respect and admiration.

Janeway upon return home was elevated to the Rank of Admiral. This (headcanon) came after Mark Johnson her once fiance reunited, but revealed he'd had a daughter with his new wife. They kept up the friendship, but became strained as the "hero" Janeway recounted tales of Voyager and Starfleet to the child, angering her mother. "Aunt Kathy" stopped calling.
Marc's Daughter Katheryn Johnson is now a Starfleet graduate. Marc died and Janeway didn't attend the funeral. Now retired Janeway gets an unexpected guest.
Janeway lives in Indiana with two dogs, Amelia and Sally Ride. She enjoys decaff coffee (under doctors orders) and secretly using her prestige to keep up to date on Starfleet matters. Like reading a newspaper, an old custom, she likes to excuse it.
When young Katheryn arrives to tell her she's been selected for a mission, Janeway knows all about it. Tuvok in fact was her tutor, but Janeway hasn't heard from him in a while. Her "Niece" shifts awkwardly.
"Tuvok? Oh he's um. Well. He's supportive. Cagey, he's got a dry sense of humor. He's... "
"He's Tuvok?" They both say together. They laugh.
"We are going to the Delta Quadrant".
There's silence and Janeway places her mug down.
"I'd heard."
"Figured you had. But I thought I'd tell you in person."
"I'd heard of the project. It's a big undertaking"
"It is, but as you always said, it's worth the risk. Exploration"
"Does your mother approve?" Young Katheryn shifts her gaze.
"I don't need her approval. Besides. You taught me all I need to know."
" ... I didn't come to Mark's funeral... No. Let me finish. I didn't come, your mother objected yes, but.. She had reason. I got stranded on the other side of the Galaxy. I got people killed. I left your father for my career. I don't want you to. Well"
Young Katheryn smiles.
"I know."
Janeway smiles and the two have a few hours before the shuttle arrives. As they leave they hug.
"Katheryn." The words seem strange in Janeway's mouth.
"Kathy. Just remember. Don't let them bully you. Don't let them shout you down. They're your crew. Look after them. They'll look after you. You're a family. Ok?"
Love the friendship between Tuvok and Janeway.

i hated janeway when the show frist started, but by the end of the show, i loved her and the crew. they could go against any star trek crew and win.

This is actually one of my favorite scenes, but Tuvok's nonchalant attitude towards the situation still baffles me to this day. Tuvok is a man of logic and he strongly believes in Starfleet's laws. Even though I though Janeways decision in this moment was dope, balsy, and made for good drama it was indeed reckless, and Tuvok would have been well with in his right to relieve her of her command in this moment. So yeah, this is one of my favorite scenes, but Tuvok inaction kind of baffles me here. Janeway is known on a few occasions to blow her top when she has really been pressed up against a wall and even though Janeyway and Tuvok and good and longtime friends. Tuvok wouldn't allow that to get in the way of his sworn duties. Though Tuvok did on occasion break a few rules himself, but it was more out of sheer principal than it was logic. Like when he listened to the crews cries and went back for Chakotay and Janeway on that planet against his order to proceed towards home. I could ponder this situation all day. I absolutely loved this show. Still sit and binge watch it from time to time.
Whenever I’m asked that pivotal question in a relationship, “Kirk or Picard?”, my answer is always the same… Janeway!
Her performance is as badass as her character.

Voyager is my favourite kitsch science fiction. Incidentally like in this episode "Scientific Method", I'm running a few experiments of my own. ;-)
Seven points out the obvious problem, and I have to agree. the undine infiltrated the ship thereby forfeiting it's freedom and put the lives of Voyager at risk. why bother trying to return it to fluidic space when it would just infiltrate Voyager again. and again.
