THE CARPETBAGGERS (Trailer)

- Here's the trailer for THE CARPETBAGGERS (1964). The film is such an outrageous mix of Hollywood melodrama, pop psychology and salacious sleaze that it's fun in a gruesome sort of way. It's an adaptation of a novel by Harold Robbins, which is one of the best-selling novels of all time, and the movie was also a huge hit (even though it's much less explicit ;-)). The characters are based on famous movie people of the '30s (eg Howard Hughes, Jean Harlow, Tom Mix and Joan Crawford).
What I like best about the movie (and the trailer) is the main title theme by Elmer Bernstein.
This was Alan Ladd's last movie. As a fan of his, I find his later movies very painful to watch, due to his tragically premature demise. Still, his performance in this one is pretty good. It makes one think that he could have become a competent character actor, rather than a slowly fading leading man, if depression and alcohol hadn't ruined him. There's a bit of dialogue in this film that I find very poignant:
Ladd: I just try to act out people's dreams.
Baker: Do you like it?
Ladd: Yes I do. It's fun.
AL often could make even the most clichéd lines sound credible and cool, but I never believed him less than when he says "It's fun."

One of my favourite all time classic movies of all time.
George Peppard great actor, loved him in the Blue Max and breakfast at Tiffany's.
Great cast as well.
Always have and always will love, love, love this movie!!!
If someone can post the whole movie, please do so. It has everything and more.
Great, powerful, dramatic epic, and my favorite George Peppard film, next to Breakfast at Tiffany's. The ladies in that movie, especially Carroll Baker and Elizabeth Ashley, were hot. Can't get enough of it.
George was always a good actor. And a very popular, with his blue eyes and premuturely greying hair!
I saw it the first time when I was 12, soon after it was released. I loved it. Seen it many times since. Saw Elizabeth Ashley at the stage door of Broadway's Longacre Theater in 2014. I told her I'd been following her career since I was 12! :)
Alan Ladd's last movie and the introduction of the Nevada Smith character. Steve McQueen played Max Sand ( Nevada Smith) in a 1966 movie. This movie is loosely based on Howard Hughes' ventures into the movie business. Max Sand was a real person (Nevada Smith).
When I was a kid this movie used to show up on TV once in a while. Now I know why my parents never let me watch it! Would love to see it now though. Looks wonderfully trashy!!!!
It's a total slog. Read the book instead.
This was (is) a great film. Since hollywood is into remaking classics think about this script!
I gotta get this movie...
Who's here from Stephen King?
Me

Me
*this is one of my favorite movies🥰*
Movies don't stage fight scenes like the one in this picture: it's beyond credibility for someone to smash their hand into a fireplace brick, and then go on fighting...etc. But it's meant for simple thrills--but we're all past that stage apparently.
There was a spinoff movie entitled "Nevada Smith," starring Steve McQueen, released two years later, about his early years born as Max Sand.
Loved this film! I remember it when it came out!
Beautiful people average actors making trash look respectful or at least entertaining or acceptable as such
The clothes and sets greatly elevate this melodrama
George Peppard..Oh my....Phew!!
I have the DVDS of The Adventurers and The Betsy. Both are great.
the book is great...buy the Carbetbaggers and the movie Nevada Smith w Steve McQueen.
part of the storyline..
2 of my faves and im 70..
have seen many movies and westerns
Alan Ladd ("Nevada Smith") died five months before it premiered.
looks lockdown great xxxxx
Harold Robbins & Daniele Steel were the giants of American Literature.
Looks like a Tennessee Williams film surprised Elizabeth Taylor not in it.
so true...
Caroll Baker are beautiful in the film.. Great movie.
Stella Stevens almost got the part of Jenny Denton.
boy was the announcer wrong.. Ya get to see all this stuff in one week of Entertainment Tonight.....
Or in the depravity of a certain President..
The book are very good too.
I remember when this movie came out I was 13 year old. . . it was rated GP but I still got in and everyone was talking about it.
This was released in 1964- four years before the G/M/R/X ratings were established. The newspaper ads merely said, “Adult entertainment.”
will be available with a LINK FROM MY FB PAGE TO MY SERVER ON MEMORIAL DAY STARTING MIDNITE....LOOK FOR THE FULL MOVIE!
Well, my goodness
Loosely based on Howard Hughes.
'don't believe HH humped his mom or stepmom.
Poor Mr. Hughes: murdered by Mormon Enablers. May GOD Rebuke theze evildoers And their cult-religion!!!
a great dmytryk film (see also crossfire for a great noir) and ladd's last.
there's a couple of german commercial tellys : it would take them one day
I saw this movie as a child on TV. It was scandalous for its day.
It sucked but it was fun.
George Peppard was far too nice and sweet in real life to play a character like Jonas Cord.
That role would have suited Kirk Douglas.
Mr. Douglas already had it: In the 1952 film, "The Bad And The Beautiful".
@@johnrobinsoniii4028 That was a much better film than "The Carpetbaggers."
I heard Patricia Neal speak at a Q&A in the late 1990s. The audience asked about Breakfast at Tiffany's and her cast mates. Patricia said there was one who created a lot of grief all around. She wouldn't mention the actor's name, but you knew it was George Peppard.
2:48 this does not bode well
+mlongpre100 So very true. I think every time each of us have found ourselves dancing in ostrich feathers on a chandelier, we've suddenly thought, "Is this really a good idea?"
much LOVE KIKI/* Kimmyssong
I’m sooo in love with “ RENA MARLOW”, played by CARROLL BAKER. I ADORE her. She was also in “ SYLVIA”, among many other movies and was best known for her role in “ BABY DOLL” for which she was nominated for best actress. I could go on n on, but if you’re a fan of hers just reply back if ya need any info or can share some info with me.
"Buyer, Seller, Builder, Destroyer, Cheater, Charmer, Lover & Lust",
Could have been describing donald trump, but in reality, is
"The Carpetbaggers" describing Jonas Cord Jr.;
In my opinion, donald trump is the personification of donald trump!
