Somebody on CZcams needs to transplant the Cybertruck electronics and sensor hardware and batteries and motors over to a rivian and make a rivian/Tesla hybrid to get the FSD capabilities and power of a Tesla with the functionality of the Rivian. Maybe would be easier to take the Rivian 's body and cab and adapt it to the Cybertruck or model x or y or s chassis while also swapping out the electronics from Rivian to Tesla. Good idea?

Back when we started hearing about electric cars, I was saying that the goal needs to be a 200 to 300 mile charge in an hour, and then chargers should be provided at roadside restaurants. Because after that much time behind the wheel, you need a break, a bathroom, and a meal.
We have reached that goal. My 3 and X charges to 100% in an hour max, but it's so inefficient to wait that long, so you charge to 70% from 0% in 30 minutes or less.
That’s a very short road trip. I know a lot of people who go camping, off roading, RVing, fishing ect. And a 700-800 mile drive in a day is pretty normal. A lot of people in the Midwest drive to Disney with two 10-12 hour drives back to back.
@@marksanko6138 500 miles is a total of 45 minutes to an hour of charging for us. We utilize those charging stops to eat and go to the bathroom and stretch our legs. That 10-12 hours of charging would be at the most 1 hr and 45 minutes with no extra stops.
We drive regularly from central NC to Hilton Head Island, SC which is around a 6.5 hour drive. We only have 1 charging stop in Florence, SC and the superchargers are 30’ away from a mall food court entrance. We usually end up having to rush our Chick Fil A meal to avoid paying overage fees. Not everyone will have the same situation but road tripping for us has been stupidly easy.
@FriedChairs I've been to that one! Funny enough I would consider that one of least convenient chargers I've been to and there's a bunch of stuff near that one.
Tesla probably decided to put blind spot in speaker since the side mirrors are removable.
probably because its cheaper to keep all the wiring contained to the body of the car. model 3 has the blind spot lights in the same spot.
@@slopedarmor But it already has wires to move the mirror.
@@Balo1997 maybe for them to be removed, but good point with it already having the wires.

I love that Roman likes to think of himself as a grumpy old man but when it comes to EV life he sounds more like an impatient youngster. When I was in my teens and twenties I’m sure EV road tripping would have seemed torturous to me but coming, as EV life has, in my 40s I find I appreciate the way EV road tripping forces me to “stop and smell the roses” instead of the “gas and go, gas and go” pace of my youth. I also find my body is a lot less cramped at the end of a long day of traveling since I do more than just squeeze the handle on the gas pump when I stop to fuel up now. I do wonder if some of this is simply being a bit jaded after years of working in the industry. Like a baseball player who has lost some of their zest for the game as a result of it being their profession. I’m sure if I had been on as many road trips as Roman has by this point in his career I’d be thinking more about getting to the destination and less about the journey being the nobler part. Is EV life for everyone, no, but neither is cannonballing from place to place without stopping so that your muscles forget what their job is. All that being said, love the video, love the channel, keep up the good work and try and remember every now and then you get paid to drive around the country in cool cars and trucks. Wish my Electrify America bill was tax deductible :)
Hey Ho! OP! This writer is in his 70s and doing a trans national, stop and smell the roses ' road tour. I both want and need the charging layovers.
I like the blind spot monitor not being in the mirror. On a rainy night, it is just one more light to distract. In the speaker as Tommy said, works for me.

I paid almost as much for my new pickup as this cybertruck. I don’t have to wait 4 years for it. But when I saw the four-wheel steering, you got my attention. Sweet!
The Rivian R1T bed camera is a game changer when driving with tailgate open or carrying large loads. Surprising Tesla didn't place a higher camera also, but with the bed cover design it would have to protrude above the roofline or only function with bed cover open.
They could have made the tail gate camera being able to rotate. Or have added another camera. OTOH how often do you drive with the tailgate open? Also, Tesla probably did not worry about this to save money. A lot of expensive tech in this truck already. And you can't help but to appreciate they are the only US EV manufacturer to make money on each vehicle.
@@pierre.a.larsen not that often, but it’s a game changer when I do. But regularly carry bulky items in bed and being able to check on them visually when driving, seeing nothing is moving around and needs tightening down, is huge. The bed cam also acts as part of Rivian’s gear guard system, whereas the CT assumes the bed cover will always be closed. Seems a miss for Tesla.
@@adamd4137 Possibly - sometimes the "no part is the best part' goes a bit too far. I wonder how much a couple of extra cameras would have cost.
Ford's been doing that for years. My F150 has 7 or 8 cameras, and one of them is a bed/load camera. Not sure why Tesla couldn't do that - since my F150 was literally less than half the price of a Foundation series CT.
The hype may be down but the interest in learning about this truck is super high I believe. Keep it going guys!
I don't hate this crazy truck honestly. I think the design is crazy on purpose and that's kind of fun. It's unique at least. It's certainly not for everyone, but I can see why some like it. I can at least appreciate what Tesla did with it.
The Blind Spot RED indicator light was likely placed in the speaker, for those CT owners wanting to remove their sideview mirrors. Makes sense...
Aha . Thar totally makes sense..I never thought of that...good observation.
But if your mirror is removed why would you be looking over there afterwards?.
It's no doubt because it was cheaper than putting in the mirror.

Great video guys, I shockingly watched the entire thing thru, your father/son dynamics was hilarious 😂
They have a great relationship, and it makes the video that much better.
As automotive journalists, you're unlikely to incur any losses on the Cybertruck. In fact, in the foreseeable future, you'll be creating a ton of videos comparing other trucks to the Cybertruck. Replicating the Cybertruck will likely take other manufacturers years to achieve.
the reason the blind spot monitoring light is not in the mirror is because the mirrors are designed to be removed, if you put it there and remove the mirrors then its gone.
A comment about your bed loading. On the left side you've place a small dimension box below a large dimension box. Why? Had you reversed that pretty obvious fault the tonneau cover could have closed some or more for better range.
Nah man… if you look the couch is pretty much blocking the tonneau cover rail…you would likely need to take the back off the couch to get that tonneau cover closed.

@@alsheremeta Hey, smart move. Well if you like paying OPEC $5/gal. to move your untarped stuff around. And maybe you're $2M money market fund monthly interest income of $8500 means it isn't significant. Good for you.
Why would you want to? The number of vehicles that will do the job better, more conveniently and more reliably is nearly infinite. You could buy 2 HD trucks for the same price. An HD truck and a very nice enclosed trailer. A flat bed delivery truck. A box truck. 2 full sized half ton trucks. A Merc van….all of which will not catch fire in a flood, burn your house down while charging or have to be written off when you get in a fender bender. A fool and his money will soon be parted.
The blind spot indicator is not on the mirror because they're supposedly giving you the option to completely remove the mirror for better aerodynamics.

Do a cross country race between this and the Tacoma. See how long a road trip takes an electric truck versus an ICE midsize.
I kind of want to do this in my F150. But as I used to drive big truck OTR, my competition wouldn't stand a chance.
You could do a legal cannonball race, or even implement FMCSA hours of Service. Which would make no difference if you had 2 people per vehicle.
Hell, I'd probably give the competition choice of route, let them pick my route which could be longer and probably give them a little head start.
They're still going to lose.

The context is about doing a cross country race between my F150 XLT sport crewcab 5.0 6 spd 4x4 and whatever EV trash you want to bring. Money is of no consequence when refueling or recharging. We're talking about time for refueling or recharging. That's the kicker.
I got 607 miles out of my tank, still had another 90 to go. Took 30 gallons. Maybe 7 minutes at the pump.
I could even be willing to pull an enclosed trailer with my Harley or my dad's Can Am Spyder.and you could carry a generator. Lol.
Not likely this will ever happen, but it's fun to talk about.
EV's cannot compete with ICE's on any metric unless you can charge at home and you are only planning on using it for city commuting or low to possible mid range trips. I wouldn't waste my time trying to do a road trip with an EV. You'd probably add at least a day of travel each way in recharging alone. And based off of what I'm seeing on youtube, EV's as rentals are also a bad experience.
I'll keep my ICE fleet and continue to rent ICE cars. See you at the Charger!
@kng128 I skimmed over your comment. Just noticed you wrote 20 MW. I'm assuming you're agreeing with me. So, sorry if I came off as a condescending prick.
The camera on the right side makes sense because you look that direction but on the left it doesn’t because you’re looking away. Tommy is right on that, and is the reason Honda only did it on one side as well in the 2010s.
I don’t think I’d ever buy one because I’m not crazy about Tesla’s build quality but it is a show case of their tech. It’s not just it being a truck it’s all the tech and manufacturing that went into making it possible.
Pretty honest review as always. And Roman is right, I do appreciate that you guys take the hit on so many new vehicles depreciation so we don't have to.
We appreciate you being an early adopter and paying the 20k markup price tag to boost my Tesla stock. I'll wait for the prices to come down before I get my Cybertruck with autopilot
I drove the Mercedes Benz 190e with the wiper from hell.
I have to say, as someone who has done roadtrips in ICE cars my whole life, I can't see myself wanting to do it in an EV no matter the brand. Until they develop (if even possible) a battery solution that charges at a rate comparable to that of filling up for gas, then EVs are really more for close commuting and not long trips. I hate the idea of stopping for an hour to charge up when in a gas car you could be ready to leave in a few minutes. That's also assuming that the chargers are free and there isn't anyone else using all the spots. I see the benefits of EVs from a daily commute perspective, but for long road trips it seems gas will be king for the foreseeable future. Good on you TFL for showing us how ridiculous parts of the Cybertruck are. I think the tiny blindspot indicators in the speakers are ridiculous, and as someone who is taller, I doubt I could fit in the front with how low the roof is.
One that surprised me about EV road tripping is that the optimum strategy is to stop more often and charge less deeply ie 5% -> 40%, so you’re hopping between chargers.
This of course is dependent on the infrastructure: I95 is better than I70 I’m betting.
I've traveled all over the USA and found traveling more enjoyable in my Tesla Model 3

500 miles of travel. The only stops I make are charging stops so we eat and use the bathroom, but those stops are 45-60 minutes total for that whole 500 miles. Maybe my time is less valuable than yours, but in a gas car, that 500 miles is going to incur at the very least 30 minutes of stops. That 15-30 extra minutes is not going to do much for me. I also arrive less tired in my 3 than I ever did in any of my gas cars. I can drive a total of 3.5 hours round trip from my house and I don't have to stop to charge. Those trips are extra cheap because at my house, my car is only $10 from 0-100%.
I did time studies for my engineering degree and I can comfortably say that it takes way longer to fuel up than you think. A typical car on the road takes avg 15 mins to fuel per AAA. No one with kids/wife is gonna go 300 miles (4 hrs) fill up in “5 mins” and not allow no one to go o the bathroom…and not eat. Every day use, it takes 10 secs to plug in just like your phone. Ever forget gas or wife forgot to get gas? You think it only takes “5 mins” to drive to the gas station, fill up, drive back? With traffic, that’s at least 20 mins

Thank you for the video and for buying the truck to review it for everyone. Can you guys also share the cost for every time you charged the vehicles?
The reason why the blind spot LED is in the SPEAKER and not the MIRROR is because when Elon showed the truck for the first time, it had no mirrors. So they made it so you can take the mirrors off and supposedly it comes with a plastic flap to cover the hole.
That makes complete sense. What makes no sense is making the blind spot monitoring light so tiny and cryptic to understand. Also, not having a display in the location where the rear view mirror would be, and instead cannibalizing center stack screen real-estate.
But, the new Model 3 has the blind spot LED in the same spot, and its mirrors aren't meant to be removed.

Steering wheel needs to be round is my opinion.
There are many ways of holding it.
And I like it when the wheel can glide when leaving a corner.

I don’t know that a round steering wheel would work. It looks like your knees are within an inch or two of the rectangular wheel.
What ever the widest part of the wheel is then it can be at least that size circle.
Reminds me of the old Triumph commercials for the wedge-shaped TR-7’s: “The shape of things to come.”
The only reason I would switch to an EV is fuel cost. My F350 dually costs me $1000 in fuel monthly. An EV truck would cost 1/10 of that. The biggest detraction of not getting an EV, is range when towing long distances. You practically need a chase vehicle. However, if you're a contractor and doing local tows only, EV is ideal due to cost savings, no range anxiety, and huge amount of torque.
It was nice of them to release their first vehicle capable of charging at 800v and taking full advantage of the v4 superchargers, only to fire the entire supercharger team and pretty much abandon v4 chargers. They just fired a bunch more it and hr people in Austin last night/this morning

@chiplangowski Elon trying to lower costs to salvage his exorbitant pay package by showing more profit. He's nuts, for better or worse. Tesla needs a CEO and Elon should focus on SpaceX and Artemis.
@@jghall00 He destroys everything he touches.
@@kimoandrews5802 I disagree. Getting Tesla to mass production and SpaceX to dominate launch are amazing accomplishments and for one person to do both is astounding. But I think the success and money have gone to his head, and he's lost the plot.
Right On!!! More Cyber truck coverage... thanks TFL!!
More to come!
If Roman didn't have Tommy there he'd have to stop to program the screen and to read it and there'd be delays just trying to figure the technology
For myself I'm glad that you bought the Cyber truck. I believe you made a Right Purchase. It's a great vehicle. And I know they're gonna be working on the battery so it has a better range down in the future. It is a great vehicle. And I can see great hopes for it. And on top of all that they will be putting in a high-end. Charge of system for the cyber track and the commercial trucks 2 down the road that allows you to pull straight through.
The wiper thing where it gets stuck at the bottom is intentional.
they don't care, they don't like EV's
The wiper is a joke.
@@hwirtwirt4500 why, because of the length, or it only has one ?
@@robarjay he just a hater
@@jasper_of_puppets k
When road tripping its faster to stop and charge small amounts than one long one. Better for your bladder too.
At highway speeds the wiper stays down to stop rain blowing back up the windscreen, at low speeds it doesn't have to hence returning to the side.
They did no to little research why thing are as they are.
@@BendeVette yeah it was a tough watch
I disagree. Charging curve depends on car. And the cyber truck charges faster at lower rates.
@@myaccount__7269
Most people charge from 10 to 70%. Enough for a little less than 200 miles.
I see not reviewing this pick-up truck as a disservice to your viewers. It takes a lot of guts to go ahead with this purchase, even if there is so much uncertainty about depreciation, residual value, and non-delivered promises. I am confident that you will do a thorough test of this thing. I commend you for going forward with the acquisition of this product.
The purpose of buying this vehicle is to produce videos and get traffic on their CZcams channel, that generates money.
if you want to get over the range anxiety just watch the out of spec road trip, they were arriving at chargers with 1-3% without a care in the world.
Tarp your load!
The truck comes with a tonneau cover. But if the load won't allow that to close, a tarp would also be a great idea.
@@damilolaakanni The tonneau cover could have closed at least partially...
Clearly all the people so freaked out by turn signal buttons have never ridden a motorcycle.
I have a cycle and I still think the buttons are stupid. Turn signals on motorcycle handlebars are a compromise to the form. In a truck it’s stupid.
So there should be handle bars for steering then?
@@michaelwitkiewicz7052 Thumb-actuated turn signals are a compromise to form? As though steering stalks aren't? Ridiculous.
What would be cool to see is a cross country race between an electric truck and a gas truck and make limits on how many hours you can drive per day but only stop for gas or charge when needed and for however long on each truck and see how much earlier one truck makes it to the destination over the other since gas trucks don’t need so long to charge
Nice to see TFL expanding into Utah and California. Your info is some of the best out there.
The stainless steel on the Tesla cybertruck is the reason why the truck design is like that... 💯
they don't even know the basic's but want to tell us about the design, they are the experts ?
No and no. Original Elon advertised it as exoskeleton, but it turn out, it is constructed more like Honda Ridgeline! The stainless steel is a choice but not a requirement.
I was amused to see him claiming that this is "function follows form", when the CT is perhaps the ultimate in "form follows function".
It's just the function is not necessarily what a traditional "truck guy" would prioritize, and includes prioritizing cost reductions for both the CT _and_ Starship.
That said, it wouldn't hurt to find a way to blunt that corner on the tailgate. Like every Tesla it's a work in progress.
Yes, road trips take longer than ICE vehicles. If you have a home charger for an EV and you used to fill up with gas twice a week, then you spent 20min a week filling up. Home charger makes sure you have a full battery every day. 20min a week for 52 weeks is a little over 17hrs a year fueling your vehicle.
How many road trips do you make a year. 2 road trips a years for me. Say it takes 2hrs longer for a trip from Houston to Georgia. I’m still net saving time per year charging vs gas.
Bull.
Ya, and if u have a home grid (Solar + battery), u can have energy and transport independence.
I mostly agree with you, although I spend no more than 10 minutes filling up my car and usually only do so about every 10 to 12 days.
We drive to Orlando 1-2 times a year and it's all of 45 minutes total charging each way to drive 500 miles in our 3 and X. People have overblown the charging issue.
Put gas in twice a week? How much are you driving each week? I have 17 Cherokee with a 15 gallon tank and fill up once every week and a half to 2 weeks. I get around 375-400 miles out of each tank.
The wipers aren’t a Cybertruck problem, they are a Tesla problem. The Auto setting is basically useless, because you cannot depend on it to wipe when needed. My Model Y has a button at the end of the left stalk that buys you 1 wipe and about 10 seconds of the wiper setting menu on the screen before it is Gone With the Wind again, so think fast and maybe you can get the wipers on before you rear end the car you can’t see in front of you. I think they should have left a safety feature like the wipers on a stalk that works like most ICE cars, especially since the Auto setting is dysfunctional.
Thank you for doing an honest review, I love the look of the truck, I know that's controversial. But I've always had obnoxious cars from a VW Bus to a BMW i3. I really am considering a cybertruck, and was invited to buy one. But at the higher price and lower range than originally advertised, I need channels like yours to really help me in my decisions. I'll be checking in every cybertruck video! Lol keep up the great work
Love these videos. Please do more of these. I'm certain Tesla is working on the next version which will address these shortcomings.
I haven't watched any Cybertruck videos, except Hagerty. But here I am. I'm glad you got the truck.
The Hagerty film is a masterpiece
The form over function of the cybertruck makes it the irl Sabre tablet from the office
Odd video. 55 min charging is nothing unless you’re road tripping every day. Remember that you never have to “get gas” from week to week which saves time and frustration. Just plug in at home and it’s full every morning. It’s unbelievably convenient.
It's a long time when road tripping.

Looks like a great Father and Son experience. Tommy seems to be learning a lot. Hope to see you off-roading with the Diesel Boys in Moab. Please investigate off road accessories. ENJOY!
At this point I think people are going to tune in and watch just to see it fail
Congratulations on the new place! Smart move. The Cybertruck is just stupid, in a bad way. That being said I might just pick a used one up in 2 years for $40k.
Everyone like this video to help tfl fight cybertruck depriciation induced bankruptcy. Dilly dilly!
Tommy, the wiper stays down during use in rain to keep water from running up the windshield. & blindspot light is in speaker so mirrors can be removed. Dont need side mirrors once you train yourself to look at cameras on center screen.
Tesla camera layout gives you 360 degree view. Its incredibly impressive. You just have to retrain yourself.
Same thing with button turn signals on the wheel. I no longer miss the stalk as the buttons are right next to my thumb. I dont have to move my hand to the stalk.
I actually perfer the real side mirrors
If you have to retrain that means it's not intuitive.
@Robert-cu9bm You had to train yourself to drive in the first place. Life is constant training. One thing I do agree with is the rear view mirror should be a screen for the rear camera. It's stupid to have that dinky little mirror that can't even be used when the bed is covered.
Love the Cybertruck. Getting rid of the 2022 Raptor. Ford sold us out. Try to get a Raptor R for MSRP. Nah, I'm rewarding an American made truck that priorizes innovation for the customer. People complain about what is missing and what could be better, but the reality is Tesla offers so many more features than the competition.
What substantial does Cybertruck offer that no other truck offers?
@@TroySavaryCool design? Full stainless steel construction? FSD (eventually)
@@spacebound1969The design is form over function. The stainless steel is a negative, not a plus. Other trucks already have working driver assist systems.
Are you a troll?
@TroySavary Your phone is your key, 48 volt electrical architecture, steer by wire, 0-60 casually in 2.6 seconds, rear wheel steering, air suspension, a super computer as a infotainment center compared to the competition and the functionality in that 18.5 inch high definition screen that is lag free.
this cant be sold in EU because of it doesnt meet safety for pedestrians.. those sharp stainless steel edges will cut people in half
People keep saying this and yet they are starting to appear over there.
@@shou635 Where? haven't seen one yet.
Tesla starting to send them to their showrooms this month.
Correction, it’s not because of the “sharp angles” it’s because of the flat front trunk. It’s been known that studies show that rounded front trunks saves lives and this truck is literally flat so your chance at surviving is very low
@@shou635 It's just a PR stunt for Tesla fanboys to create a selfie opportunity. The vehicle will be present on site for only a few days. It's not just about pedestrian safety, these lights fail to meet safety requirements. Also, the CCS2 combo is mandatory and won't fit where the port is on this vehicle. The vehlice will be pressent just for few days at the location.
