- Shane MacGowan & Christy Moore accompanied by The Benzini Brothers (The Hothouse Flowers) perform the Irish ballad ‘Spancil Hill’ .
The song was composed by Michael Considine from Spancil Hill (also written ‘Spancilhill’) in County Clare, Ireland. Born circa 1850, he emigrated to the United States around 1870 with a plan to work and make enough money to bring over his sweetheart Mary McNamara, ‘Mack the Ranger’s daughter’ in the song, so that they could be married.
In the ballad, the writer dreams he has travelled to his home place the night before the village’s famous horse fair which is held every year in June. Observing the people who have gathered for the fair which is to be held the following day, he also visits old neighbours and of course his true love Mary.
At the time the song was written Michael Considine had made his way to California. By 1873 his health was failing, and in the realisation that he would never see Mary again sent the poem home to his nephew in County Clare. Gay Byrne's Late Late Show 1994 - Hudba
Stumbles in the door onto the stage, gets laughed at by the audience , Christy Moore nervous in waiting, then McGowan deliverers a fucking masterpiece. Legend. RIP . Born to sing.
The way Christy had recorded it 25 years before! They both nailed it. The reverb on his voice when he first comes in is great. Look up the way Christy explains this performance.
Yes, absolute Legend ... !

Shane was English buddy born in Kent
@@Arfabiscuit I think he might of said differently if you asked him
@Arfabiscuit he was" an Irish man born in Kent "sound like one of his song titles ha
Don't let Shane MacGowan fool you he's a genius. He may look the fool, but once the music starts, he's spot on
I must admit I really do like the guy.
I've walked out of 2 disgraceful performances
It is in his blood. Shame he sometimes doesn't show up. Music runs through the mans veins when he knows where he is.
Shane didn't stand a chance 😒his aunt plied him with tobacco and whiskey when he was 5yrs young 🥃👶,,,,,,,, wow, some childhood 😮?
@@MotherAlgorithm Yeah. Hardcore drug addict musicians are a gamble. I have seen a few shows go down in shambles. MacGowan could have been one of the greats if it wasnt for the drink and all the enablers fame brought.
Me and the brothers really enjoyed this. Greetings from Afghanistan.
My deep condolences with all you Irish people, you lost two of your biggest legends in 2023. Shinéad and Shane- they cannot be replaced. LEGENDS!

What an amazing cover of a classic irish folk song by two irish legends. Rest in peace Shane macgowan.
Wonder how many more times ima going to listen to it now, running away from war in my Ukraine. Somehow i feel so relevant. Maybe in my former life i was Irish. Love the music and lyrics. I want 3 things, the war to stop, to sing this in karaoke and wish i had a voice. First two things im sure of soon.
Just sing the songs you like, all the time, your voice will come.
In the meantime though stay safe!
What war?
God bless you.
I wish for peace for you. From Ireland to Ukraine. 🇺🇦
Are u blagaurding
This is very moving, halfway through Christie turns his body, his guitar, his voice and music directly to Shane. There was a sense of holding him. He was a poetic genius but he was also vulnerable and wanted to belong. I remember feeling intrigued by him and a bit confused as a child watching him, I'm not confused anymore. Thank you Shane and to all those who saw the light in you. Rest in peace ❤ ❤❤
The moment Shane takes off his sunglasses, shivers down the spine.
All away from Australia Shane your music is just I play over and over.
Xmas in new York is now being played on ABC radio and a pair of brown eyes is getting air play.

Shanes voice is beautifully violent and dark

One of my heroes. I'll be in Nenagh tomorrow to pay my respects and to thank him for the decades of entertainment he has given me and for my decades more to come...I hope.
I love you Shane, for always.
One of the best songs about homesickness ever written... sung by two icons of Irish music: Christy and Shane! Brilliance...
Shane was born and raised in England...
@@gagglesas Don't start with this nonsense. He was born in Dublin and lived there till he was a teenager.
@@celticdodge5282 hahah no he wasn’t. He was born in Kent (as he himself has admitted) and then went to school all in England… famously kicked out of Westminster school. So not sure where you’ve got your information…
@@gagglesas Look if your sitting here trying to claim he's more English than Irish or something... It's not gonna fly pal sorry. He's a McGowan, both parents Irish, his heart is Irish. He literally poors his heart and soul into a song about the famine here. Blood is thicker than water my friend. You have plenty of your own musicians.
@@celticdodge5282 it’s actually funny because both my parents are Irish born and bred. When i’m in Ireland people say i’m English, so your only trying to claim him because he’s successful…

Incredible. His timing, his delivery and the way he gives the song exactly what it needs after Christy begins in such a perfect way, shows a measure of utter genius. Most would try force after that introduction but, Shane finds something that is as wild and raw as the song demands from within ❤
Just wow what a performance!! Rip Shane you done us very proud! Be never anyone like you again!!
Thats so true shane was a brillant singer .
Last night as I lay dreamin'
Of pleasant days gone by
Me mind bein' bent on rambling
To Ireland I did fly
I stepped on board a vision and
I followed with the wind
Till first I came to anchor at
The cross at Spancil Hill
It being the 23rd of June
The day before the fair
Where Ireland's sons and daughters
And friends assembled there
The young, the old
The brave and the bold came
Their duty to fulfill
At the parish church near Clooney
A mile from Spancil Hill
I went to see my neighbours to
See what they might say
The old ones were all dead and gone
The young ones turning grey
I met the tailor Quigley
He's as bold as ever still
He used to mend my britches when
I lived in Spancil Hill
I took a flying visit to my one and only love
She's as white as any lily
As gentle as a dove
She threw her arms around
Me, saying "Johnny, i love you still"
She is Nell, the farmer's daughter
The pride of Spancil Hill
I dreamt I held and kissed her
As in the days of old
Saying, "Johnny, you're only joking
As many's the time before"
But the cock, he crew in the morning
He crew both loud and shrill
I awoke in California
Many miles from Spancil Hill
Thanks for the lyrics!

Christy Moore is so good
I can’t believe I’ve slept on the genius of Shane MacGowan this long. Part pure Irish tradition, part rock legend, he’s got it all. I got chills when his verse came. Incredible raw singing. He’s the real deal.
For sure man you should check out the Pogues songs, or the Pogues singing Dirty Old Town live. He's one of the greatest songwriters of all time
Yeah, I’ve been on a MacGowan/Pogues kick since watching a BBC documentary on him! Definitely one of the greatest of all time
One of the greatest Shane performances I've seen online, what a beautiful piece of music. I've only got into him since he died and now I can't get enough of his music, what a legend

Shane Rules. Best Mic drop ever. The man cannot be touched. He blew poor Christy right off his pedestal. Nicely. Like a Punk! I love them both
Not really.
Playing music together should never be a pissing match, and people like that are quickly shunned to wank their days away. So boring.
This is a great rendition, high caliber musicianship from all on deck.
Respect from Canada
Shane is the man. The best of us. RIP Shane , 2 days before is funeral mass in his beloved Nenagh .
Wow. Amazing. You can tell by Gay Byrnes reaction he realized he had captured a special moment. 3 decades later we get to enjoy it.
This is my favourite version of this song . And should be released somehow .
Yo yo you
Absolutely.. best and only version of this song
Gay Byrne is a sarcastic prick listen to the way he says Shane’s name
I was extremely lucky to watch this particular show. Shane and Christy's rendition was amazing then. It stuck with me throughout the decades. It was only at the advent of CZcams that I was finally able to see this absolute gem. Brilliant. It was brilliant when I watched it live back in '91 I think, and remains a gem many decades later.
Christ I'm not that old yet
King of kings. Cheers Shane, rest easy brother, see you soon.
RIP Shane, thank you for all your fantastic music you gave us, you'll always be remembered❤
He had a lovely voice,
BEST SONG OF 2021!!
When you been travelling across world and come back home to listen to this it really is
The song hits another level when shane starts to feel it and takes off his shades, then the penny whistle kicks in goosebumps!! 😲😁
Thank you for pointing that out.
RIP 🙏 Shane... love ya ❤
I'm a sound engineer and way back in 93 I did a gig with Shane in Belfast at the springhill Festival.
Well in the first half he was brilliant and in the second half he was brilliant but he was completely pissed throughout the whole gig.
Brilliant! 🇮🇪
A Brilliant, true artist!Take me or leave me,you lose, kind of guy!
Great natural reverb coming from Shane's vocals here.
@Micheal Kelly I've worked many festivals but springhill was always the best!
I'm trying to remember the 2 dj's who were the main guys. Cooksie and I can't remember I can't remember the other one.
I was at it. Met Gerry Adams before the gig. My friends and I asked him how Shane was. He told us he was well on but lucid which was entirely accurate. And then he asked us to look at the moon over Black's Mountain. Which we did. It was beautiful. Concert was great. For goodness sake, do the hippy hippy shake!
Just be glad you were his sound engineer and not his dentist.
christy moore is just amazing
Shane MacGowan was the bard on a bridge to the ballads.
I love all our old Irish songs. They really are amazing songs and so many of them. They should get waaaaaaay more airtime on our domestic radio stations. They might not be modern but theyre so good theyre timeless imo.. Spancil Hill is an absolute masterpiece. Same for Raglan Road, Grace, The Night Visiting Song, Lifeboat Mona, and so so so many more. Jaysus now I feel like getting drunk and listening to Irish music all night .. !! 🍺😃

All I can say is Shane was the best . There will never be another
Shane MC Gowan's voice brings out the patriot in me more than most singers.
Agree....lovely song.....makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up... Shane is class 👍👍
And yet he generally speaks with a north London accent.
Best of luck to Shane in hospital at present. He lived recklessly like Brendan Behan and Dylan Thomas but didn't quite manage to stuff out the candle. He is loved and has a woman who is steadfast behind him....🇮🇪☘🇬🇧
RIP Shane. Last of a kind. Total legend. Blessings from Scotland 🏴

Shane’s passing has renewed a deep dive in to his music and life for me. For the first time I felt the angst of both sides of my family’s history as immigrants and finally understand my karmic past. Half my family immigrated from Italy and half from the UK. No wonder!!
