can you tell me exactly what its about other than war? why are the lyrics magic? it's a nice song but I'm not seeing any deeper meaning, would be nice if you could fill me in
I remember playing the Pogues when i was a teenager , my parents would shout...turn it up. from the bottom of the stairs....only band to get that honor.
This comment cracked me up because I've been there, in my case it was 2. groups the pouges and the levellers in the end my mum bought 2 pouges albums and a greatest hits CD and my dad now owns levelling the land by the levellers and no joke there were times when I still lived there that I felt like shouting down the stairs to turn it down but obviously I never did
Here the same. I was into alternative music (Sonic Youth and other obscure noisy stuff). The day I brought a Pogues album home, my dad thought I was doing drugs. Such a change it was. But he liked them very much.
I ended up taking my Mum to A Pogues gig at PC 69 in Bielefeld, Germany, I could not drive at the time. Was IISFFGWG tour. Brillant gig even had kirsty along to sing FTNY and A Man You Don't Meet Every Day. Instead of Cait.
I come back to this throughout the years, because even as Shane was getting older and his mouth decayed more and more, his voice became somehow even more haunting and powerful. RIP Shane.
Your old mouth is decaying too! So why don't you shut it !!!!! RIP Shane and Sinead And the rest of the true Irish men R I P all men who died for IRELAND
youve hit the nail on the head poppy....a legendary genius...i remember watching the pogues back in 87 at reading rock festival and a couple of years later down in bournmouth at the BIC....i was hooked on that style of music from the off....a lot of these so called stars/singers of today could learn a lot from shane,a truly talented songwriter.
I looked at him he looked at me and all I could do was hate him..... I always say is just straight up the best opening of any song anywhere.... ( he's always sussed! ...... cause he was away we it.. always! A pure rocker ) long to shane! A modern bard....
It’s amazing to see Shane just be able to turn it on like this. He see’s how utterly sincere Christy is, and finds a way to get back to the source material
R.I.P .... Shane ... You are a legent , a genius !!!!! We will never see your like again !!!! I have played and listened to your beautiful songs and music for 40 years !!!! You brought me joy and happiness every time I heard your voice !!!! When I heard of your passing yesterday I just cried .... !!! !!! it was so emotional .... I saw the Pogues live five times !!!! Woo what a great band !!!! So I dried my tears .... no more pain ... no more sorry .... its all gone .... gone in the years for Shane !!!!! My sincere condolences to his beautiful wife .... Victoria ... Sister and Dad .... He will never be forgotten ♥.
The guy is singing his heart out.. I mean he really came close. But when Shane starts you just hear class.. Lots of class already, but that voice is ... Annie Lenox.. Christine McVie. I can't describe it, it's unique, but so beguiling. To the guys eternal credit.. He Knows.. It very nearly brought me to tears.. Just like Annie Lennox, but for different, more totured reasons. Thankyou so much Christy.
This song plays in my jeep every day to and from jobs multiple times and I love it, sure why not, live your life and love it and listen to what makes you feel real and be happy.
The obvious affection these two have for each other is lovely to see. Shane's music will be sung forever; but no one will be able to do it like Shane...that gritty, sung from the gut, and felt from the heart delivery is all Shane.
I agree with you HALFTHEMIKE! I love Shane so much. There is something about him that is so special; he is a loveable rogue. He introduced me to Irish Punk in the 80's I lived in the Hood in San Francisco w/my 3 kids. The area was becoming gentrified (poor blacks pushed out by wealthy yuppies) & families moving away. I was a punker & knew nothing about Ireland. I'm Irish-Italian, second generation American. I was in a small pub when a DJ played "Thousands are Sailing." I asked the DJ what he was playing, because I had never heard anything like it, & fell in love w/the song instantly, even without understanding most of the lyrics. He says the Pogues & I said what? He says they are from Ireland. So next day I bought the CD & began to buy all their CDs. I finally got to see Shane with his new band The Popes in concert, a night I will never forget. Since then i learned all about Ireland & her music. I have been to Ireland (Erin's Fair Isle) 6 times & am returning soon. I took my 2 youngest kids as well, my youngest daughter & my son. They love Ireland! Eileen the Hooley Queen (65 yr. old grandmother) ROCK ON IRELAND!!
+HALFTHEMIKE They're a great band filled with down to earth people that make music to fit any emotion any time. Truely one of the best poets of our time would have to be shane.
Christy is so incredibly gifted and his relationship with Shane is wonderful. Two professionals who admire the skill of the other with no judgement, simply acceptance. But to be honest, it breaks my heart to see Shane wasting away, but on the flip side, this life-style choice coincides so perfectly with his level of genius.
Thank you Shane for everything you done for me.. I was in a really bad state... And I been listening to the pouges for a long time.. But this version made me rethink my choices in life, I just wanted to say thank you for the bottom of my heart.. You are a awesome human being ♥️💕♥️
Few years ago in Dubrovnik walking in Old Town I heard one Scotish street's player plays guitar and sing this song and I join him, after we sang Rainy Night In Soho, when I tried to put him some money in guitar's case he said o, no, there's no need when you are The Pogues fan! And what else I can do then ask him do you like weed? He said of course, I had few grams of domestic ganja, we rolled a real torpedo, went back and for one hour he played and we sang only The Pogues songs!
I like how these two r very passionate naturally and they love the words they r singing plus they work well as a legendary Irish pair and I seen Christy Moore last nite in Scotland 4 the first time he was grand ,now if it were possible, I would like 2 c Shane live in concert maybe wiv Christy moore...that b class....X
Shane sang with passion that only a tortured soul full of pain could sing his voice was so unique and raspy that he is but the voice to convey to the world that each of us feel.i saw the poques twice once with strummer and once with shane I still to this day am privileged to have seen both and how many Irish Celtic bands have a mosh pit break out
Shane Mcgowan can be compared to the abstract art movement, different, a tad strange but very very moving depending on your taste or feelings.........Poetic heartfelt perfection to me !!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I don't know what it is but Christy seems to give this more of a traditional irish folk feel. It's awesome. I heard this version before I heard the Pogues' recorded version and I love it. It's really calming.

Once you really take the time to listen, you slowly begin to realize those lyrics are pure magic.

Christy sings so beautifully - When Shane sings he takes me somewhere else to the world in his imagination - Everything comes to life.
God bless Christy and Shane... they have given so much of their hearts to us.
They really have. I love Christy and I love Shane . Shane has a beautiful soul
How this sounds like a love song and is yet deadly deadly serious is McGowan's genius. May he sit at the right hand of God.

The raw and the melodic. Was there ever anything better. The care and awe of Christy Moore for the talent of Shane is palpable. I love this.
Shane is one of the quintessential artists of our time, superlative in every sense of the word
A man of words and a man of music, could nicer things be said of anyone?
Love the way Christy wills the session to a collective vibration of joy ..just lovely the two voices compliment each other .
Shane is a beautiful human being. I don't care what anyone says. We will really miss him when he's gone

Gotta love good ol' Shane. One of a kind.
Luv Shane. Pure genius. He gets to the heart of the Irish character. A working class genius.
He is English. His parents were Irish. He went to public school, so not sure you could call him working class. Genius song though, that's for sure.
Ask Shane and he’ll tell you he’s Irish , he’s one of the most Irish people you’ll ever meet
