      What do Steven Gerrard, Xavi, Kobe Bryant and Dr Dre all have in common? They all said John Barnes was their sporting idol. John Barnes is one of the most underrated players of all time and not remembered by people who grew up after the 1980s. Liverpool were banned in Europe so never played in Europe at his peak and got a bad injury in 1991 that robbed him of his explosive speed and was never same player again, just before the Premier League was created and led to the coverage of football in the UK and the world exploding.

      He's a good manager and seems fairly careful with his words. I was brought up a Rangers fan so have been fairly familiar with him in recent years. The Rangers and Celtic jobs aren't really comparable with the Premier League because it's a totally different scenario but they have their own challenges, especially conduct and dealing with a really rabid fanbase. I think he's learned a lot from the experience of that goldfish bowl and early signs are he'll do well for Villa. Good luck to him. It's about time some ex-England players made it as managers again (over more than a season or two). It used to happen more often in the past.

    I am so grateful to have followed Gerrard's entire career right from the very start. I remember watching an interview of him in his early teen days, when he had yet to impress in the senior team. When asked who his favorite player at the club was, he replied "Michael Owen". Coincidentally, I fell in love with Liverpool because of Michael Owen as well. And so i just kinda had a soft spot for Gerrard from the early days without knowing what an absolute legend he would eventually become for Liverpool, dwarfing even Owen himself. Now to see him building his career in management gives me that same feeling - he's definitely going to establish himself as one hell of a manager in the days to come. *LEGENDS* of the game on Steven Gerrard.
    *Messi:* _" Personally, I think Gerrard is England’s greatest ever player."_
    *Zidane:* _“There was a point when Gerrard was the best midfield player in the world. It is unusual to get complete midfield players who can do everything, but that is what he was.”_
    *Kaka:* _"For me, and I have always said this, he will be regarded as one of the greatest midfielders ever. No doubt."_ & _"Of course, Lampard was pretty amazing, Scholes the classic. But I'll have Gerrard."_
    *Pirlo:* _“While at Milan Ancelotti came to me and said, ‘I want to sign Steven Gerrard to play next to you in midfield - what do you think?’ Without any hesitation I told him, ‘Do it - go and sign him.’ At this stage he was probably the most complete midfield player in Europe, of course I wanted to partner him."_
    *Francesco Totti:* _“Steven Gerrard would be the captain of my World XI dream team. Gerrard is a complete player because he can play in every position and can do everything with a football at any time in a game."_
    *Patrick Vieira:* _"I heard what Alex Ferguson said about him being better than me. He’s probably right."_

    The fact he achieved what he did with, at times a mediocre Liverpool team is remarkable, some games he almost single handed dragged Liverpool over the line. If he played for a Real Madrid he would of won every single trophy and gone down as one of the top 5 midfielders of all time. A true great of the game. And now a very well spoken manager also.

    • @Thorny5718
      @Thorny5718 Před 2 lety +1

      Not all the Liverpool teams he was in were mediocre mate, that’s harsh. Unfortunately he never had more than 5 or 6 decent players around him at the same time, that’s the thing. He came close to winning the league twice, and won enough cups. However , imagine if had he been surrounded by more quality players, then who knows what could of been achieved in the famous red shirt.
      It’s a shame he wasn’t 3 or 4 years younger, he would of been a fantastic fit in Klopp teams.

One of the most underrated players ever, although he has that respect!
