Day 111: Climbing Gannett Peak was our most ambitious extra credit undertaking on the CDT. Starting at 3 A.M. from our high camp, we hiked up and over Bonney Pass and across the Dinwoody Glacier in the dark before arriving at the base of the Gooseneck Pinnacle Route at dawn. Here we encountered the only real obstacle of the day, the melting bergschrund, which at this point still had a very minor snow bridge. After gingerly crossing the cut in the snow, we continued up the Gooseneck scramble. We passed on rope, crampons, and harnesses to save weight on the trail, and relied on our climbing ability to accomplish the brief class 4/5 section of the ascent. We made it to the top of Wyoming's highest mountain by 8:30 in the morning and enjoyed the summit all to ourselves. After descending back to the glacier, we climbed back up and over Bonney Pass once again. We were elated when we finally returned to camp nine hours after we had left. 9.28mi RT +4,948' gained #lifeisbetteroutside #continentaldividetrail #cdt2021 #cdt #gannettpeak #climbing #thruhiking #thruhike #windriver #windriverrange #bridgerteton #bonneypass #titcombbasin #titcomblake #backpacking #takemebackpacking #thedivide #hyperlitemountaingear #hellyhansen #wyoming #backpacking #triplecrown ‪@HyperliteMountainGear‬ ‪@hellyhansen1877‬

That looked amazing. I can't waited to give it a shot. I sectioned the CDT through the Winds last year. It was amazing.
    Take care!

Awesome! If you were to do this peak as a stand-alone trip, how long would the approach be?

It depends on which direction you approach from, but I believe most routes start at around 40 miles. It’s a long one!
