  • I have made a longer video describing better the journey of climbing Gannett here: • To Love The Mountains
    For this video I essentially cut down some clips and threw them together so enjoy 40+ minutes of some Wind River scenery!

    Your video did a great job of showing what the climb was really like.

    I was there with my brother on Labor Day weekend in 1980. Our second camp was at about the same place as yours. No one told us we would have to get up at 2AM to go just a few miles (according to the map) to Gannett. We figured it out when we got to Bonnie Pass, which was as far as we went. The disappointment was pretty small considering what we did get to see. And coyotes were singing at night! (this was before the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone.) Like you, we did the exit hike in one day, and our feet were killing us. Downhill hiking can really slam the feet. The next time I go will be easier, with wings and nothing to carry but a harp.

      The view from Bonnie pass and all along the route is incredible! We were lucky enough to know to start early in the morning, the ascent day is really long starting in Titcomb Basin. You will enjoy your next visit :)

    What was the date you did this? Trying to get an idea of snow conditions relative to time of year. Thank you!

      Hi, we did this from July 24-27. You might want to look into soar.earth, which can give you satellite imagery and might help you determine snow conditions at different times of the summer.

    Nice work! I've been a few places in that range including to the top of the basin. Island Lake is a crusher!! I was under the impression that there was a bit of technical climbing near the top from this side. Guess I was wrong? Other than Alaska I guess this is the most remote state high point. Well Done!!

      Thank you! There is a 40 degree snow climb getting up Gooseneck Couloir after that maybe class 3 scrambling to get to the summit ridge. There will be crevasses to watch out for later in the season. The range is super nice, glad you've been out to a few places!

      @@koimcarthur8835 Getting ready to do a few "ups" in Washington this summer and wanted to go with something lighter than Ice Climbing boots. I was wondering what boots and crampons you go with for a trip like this one THX

      @@farbeyonddriven8173 I am not the most efficient packer to be honest. I wore a pair of La Sportiva Bolder X for the approach and the Scarpa Charmoz for the snow stuff. I got the crampons used and I am unsure what type they are specifically, they have a heel clip but not a toe clip. My Dad was fine without mountaineering boots (Salomon Quest 4) and a pair of Grivel strap on crampons which I think is fine strategy as long as you aren't going on steep hard snow or ice.

    Amazing video! Really cool witnessing all the climb. I was searching for an easier peak to climb nearby maybe in the same basin. Would you recommend something? Also a very easy mountain top with a view on Gannett.
    Thanks

      Hi, thank you! I have unfortunately only made it out to the Wind River Range to climb Gannett Peak as I am living a fair drive away (Calgary, Alberta) so I don't have any insider information on what you are looking for. I did however look into Fremont Peak which is closeish, you have a view of Gannett, and from what I can tell it is a third class scramble so it is not too technical, maybe you could try for that? I am sorry I could not be of more help.

    Curious, what dud your packs weigh?

    • @koimcarthur8835
      @koimcarthur8835  Před 3 měsíci +1

      My pack was about 70lbs the others were probably about 30-40lbs. You can pack much more efficiently than I did, my pack was so heavy because I was carrying a lot of the shared equipment (the tent, the rope, an extra tarp in case we need to make an emergency shelter due to a storm, most of the cooking supplies, snow pickets, ice screws) and because I brought extra stuff which most people would deem unnecessary (approach shoes + mountaineering boots, power banks, too much clothing).

    • @koimcarthur8835
      @koimcarthur8835  Před rokem

      Bergshrund wasn't an issue when we went though we heard movement underneath suggesting that the snow bridge may not have been entirely stable. A bit more than 17 hours to get from our camp near the last Titcomb lake up to Gannett and back, I was pretty sick though so this should be done much faster. Not very far distance wise from the last Titcomb lake but the elevation gain is nearly 6000 feet.
