    Former VAIO Duo 11 owner here. I'm more excited about the Spectre Folio than I have been any convertible in years. Love the battery life, love the materials, and LOVE the form factor.

      for me the winner is hmm yeah it is a freaking Porsche.. aka Porsche Book 3200x1800 +500nits screen (SB2 is 360nits) and also better sRGB coverage then fx SB2 and other of the Surface line screen variants, and then you also get Wacom 4096 stulys on top, and not Ntrig + intel wireless that is way faster then fx SB2 in iperf-test on notebookcheck.. SB2 get 500mbps Porsche Book 650mbps.
      and build and hinge mech, no contest, + thunderbolt3 in the 7mm tablet section +50% bigger battery in tablet part then SB2 (25wh vs 18wh).
      Porsche Book should really make a vers2 as I was blown away by the vers1 side by side with SB2. ´way better then SB2 in build and screen and ports and 360 feature and the exact same touchpad as SB2.
      all the other 3-1 is mehh, though I do like what HP does with the folio 2-1 and real leather.. that will be nice to move around and touch.
      and on non ultrabooks My choice would go in direction of Asus Pro duo.

    Microsoft and HP are killing it in terms of design lately. Microsoft seems to be the new Apple in many ways, which is great, imo. I have a Surface Pro 2017 and love it. But I've got to say HP is the more exciting in terms of design. They are really making stylish products that don't look like anything else on the market at all.

    • @kyouhyung
      @kyouhyung Před 5 lety +7

      I really think MS and HP are getting along well. MS is definitely doing a great job of suggesting new form factors and setting up references, and HP is really doing good with building up on that.

    Lisa, I bought the HP Spectre Folio. The speakers are horrendous. No amount of audio tweaking rescues it. The trackpad is small, I thought I could live with it but it’s not adequate. Guys, stick to the Surface line.

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  Před 5 lety +23

      Odd, the speakers are the best I've heard on a Spectre over the years. The trackpad is certainly small compared to other Spectre models, but as measured with the ruler, is nearly identical in size as the Alcantara Type Cover trackpad.

    • @B3owulf
      @B3owulf Před 5 lety +4

      MobileTechReview at a $1,400 retail cost, it’s closest competitors are the MBP and Surface Laptop 2. I compared the speakers of the Folio with the Surface Laptop 2, the Folio sounded tinny and bass-less. There’s one more thing to mention, the Y series i7 is pretty bad. I saw noticeable lag on startup and heat dissipation on the bottom. This laptop is gorgeous but when you look closer, you see the cracks in the beauty. If someone has $1400 to spend, consider the Surface Laptop 2.

    • @b.m.2344
      @b.m.2344 Před 5 lety +2

      Microsoft's precision trackpad drivers should work with the Folio. It works wonderfully on my Pavilion and 2 Spectres and definitely makes me feel like I have more touchpad real estate.
      I prefer HP's trackpads over Apple's anyway, so I'm slightly biased :)

    Great review, thanks -- I think if you like a Surface as a single device (laptop and tablet), the HP is out of the running. I've already got the Lenovo for a convertible laptop that sometimes serves as a tablet, but if I can only travel with one device, it's the Surface. (That said, I currently travel with the Surface Go 8g because I really love the small size for those little coach tray tables ;) ) I think you're right about the keyboard as well - the surface keyboard is an acquired taste, but I love it.

    • @DinglePinky
      @DinglePinky Před 5 lety

      For me it was the surface go that replace a tablet and laptop. The pro is to big for one hand use. Surface Go has been my laptop/tablet for umm on the go but when I was using surface 3, which isnt a pro but has the same size as the pro, I didnt bring it outside that much because it cant fit on my lap and the armchair of my seat.
      I had to bring a heavy, inconvenient and hot as hell gaming laptop, at least that can sit on my lap and armchair without me worrying that it'll drop from small movement.
      That is why Go is better for that term laptop/tablet.

We returned it again to best buy got another. Well wouldn't you know it.... Crackling speakers. She returned it and bought a Mac. We tried.

    I have two problems/disagreements with Lisa's findings. One, I didn't hear mention of the sound, specifically when changing modes. While the speakers sound decent in laptop mode, the placement muffled the sound when adjusting modes. The sound is deminished because it is hidden behind sound absorbing and sound robbing leather when in tent or tablet mode.
    Secondly, the unit I tested did get warm when I was using it in tablet mode.
    Other than that, I enjoyed using the HP device. There were no flaws in found. It was refreshing to see something sort of unique because I liked the revisted design that Sony/Vaio created and HP certainly improved upon it.

      @@mobiletechreview Both are 10-inch devices which are super portable, so I think they are similar in size. Both use core-Y CPU, so computing power not so powerful after all. Both come with AES pen, good for note-taking and sketching. Price is indeed different, but the idea is that this comparison may give us a clue about which 10-inch device running Win10 might be a better choice for what kind of people.

      Here's the distilled comparison: the Notebook 9 and Pen family have a much better pen- likely that's most important to artists and designers. You also get a traditional easy on the lap design. Surface Pro is more compact and lighter to use as a tablet. Has a better screen too, though Samsung's are decent.

Sometimes a finger works, sometimes the pen, sometimes neither... oh wait, it did, but the 5 sec delay meant I asked it to do something else! 2 weeks ago I watched your Asus Zenbook 3 review and ordered it from Amazon right away, AND I LOVE IT!!!
    However, it came with a "case" that closes using magnets and I'm worried that the magnets will damage the HDD. Do you know anything about this matter? I've read some articles that say that the magnets could potentially damage the HDD but they would have to be much more powerful and since the case came in the box I hope that Asus wouldn't put in the box knowing it's harmful.

    • @davidlugarov9685
      @davidlugarov9685 Před 5 lety +3

      You shouldn't worry about something like that. Asus would not put magnets near sensitive hardware, and I'm assuming that they are only powerful enough to clip together and stay shut, this is nowhere near powerful enough to affect the HDD.

    Pen lag is similar to watching a live tv in youtube from pc and phone at the same time. Video comes 1st in phone then pc.
    Also laptop got very expensive.

    Instead of making a lesser version of a Surface product, I think companies should make products with similar performance and price, but make them user upgradeable.
    It's not like they need to be waterproof! Make modular designs that are accessible so that these massive investments at least feel more justifiable.

      Well the MBA has the same CPU as the HP, so about the same, maybe slightly better depending on what you are doing with it and how good MacOS is tuned for it.

    I won't buy anything that doesn't have usb c charging because I will not go back to different chargers for my laptop and phone when I travel.

    Bravo HP. You are so close to making what I REALLY want
    If it was...
    A. 3:2 display instead of 16:9
    B. Capable of accepting at least a MicroSD slot for external storage
    C. Running ChromeOS
    D. Available in black
    Then I would be really mad as I would -- HAVE TO -- pony up the money and get myself one.
    (No sarcasm here, I actually feel this way)

    Not a fan of HP's "executive desk accessory" aesthetic. And "leather" like that is a real leather substrate with a polymer surface that irons out all the imperfections in color and texture. I personally prefer an honest synthetic to plasticized leather.

    I would probably get the new iPad Pro. HP laptops are not worth it unless your company issues this for work.
