I liked that it didn't have typical "cool kids" who were the bad guys and "dork kids" who were the good guys. Everyone was just an actual human being and there wasn't any black or white. Everyone had faults and also some good in them. Also, Laila was supposed to be hated. She did her job well.
Ngl I used to be a Leila (not as bad) it didn’t take long for me to change as I realized I was hurting people that I loved for boys that didn’t reciprocate. I feel like that’s why I also felt for her much more than most viewers but yeah she is pretty bad, I don’t know if change is possible as she is definitely crazy (that bomb threat 😬).
Dom's friends helped her when she told them that she couldn't go to prom with the boy she liked. She wouldn't go to prom because she had an arranged marriage. It was sad because she didn't want to get married even though, her family needed the money.
This she was such a performative activist for so many things and watching her insert herself in situations that didn’t have to deal with her or when she kneeled just cause she saw Dom and her friends doing it to. And even the feminism thing like she’s so quick to make fun of other women like Leila and I don’t even like her but still there was no reason to make fun of her in the first episode and onward even if she is shit

At some point in a show you’re meant to like the characters, not like them, maybe relate to them a bit and like them after a while. That’s how it happens in real life. Have you ever watched a movie where you had a love/hate relationship with the bad guy. Kinda like how people feel with joker. Have you ever had a friend that had a bad trait but you still loved them, that’s how it is in real life. If all the characters are irritating then they need to go back to the drawing board

Plus, the siblings are no unlikable per se, Leila's friend is super nice, and the saxophonist is confused and threw away his future, but he felt he was doing the right thing. But, who are those other two writers? Why haven't they said something, or supported her? I was impressed how they handled difficult topics on this show (for a netflix high school drama). This is the first time that I've seen a show actually show the consequences and trauma of SA. The psychological horror, the exhaustion of the process, the injustice... so upsetting and unfortunately realistic. Regardless if you like Joey as a character or not, I think the show did a great job at making us empathize with her. This is a very important point to me because I've seen shows that have SA scenes but only to shock the audience and after that nobody cares anymore. The plot just goes on like nothing happened. It makes me really mad because these scenes are very upsetting to me but the topic is never adressed again
I actually liked the main characters... because they felt like real people and were not bad despite their flaws. Things like Joey's white feminism or Syd's misogyny/internalized homophobia, felt intentional becase those things allowed the characters to have arcs and grow. And then there were the super chill characters like Jayson, who was more of an immature kid than a bad person and Dom, who was gorgeous and smart and perfect. The only truly unlikable character for me was Leila, who ACTUALLY did things out of malice and messed with very serious stuff. In general I don't think characters have to be perfect to be likable and I actually enjoy when they have room to grow... and I'm not talking about the guys who raped Joey because they were clearly not meant to be liked in the first place... it's not a flaw making the antagonists unlikable. Oh and hey I remember you saying the series was problematic but never saying why. I really don't get why it's problematic.

To me it just felt like a more realistic euphoria- there was always a lot happening that it was lowkey hard to keep up. I liked it tho, I really could see myself in the characters. Something I think keeps happening with tv shows that display high school dramas is that nobody really fws the characters, but IMO that's fine because at the end of the day this isn't a movie- it's supposed to be displaying a more realistic high school experience and growth just doesn't happen that fast.

I feel like Laila sent the bomb threat also bc it cancelled that play that Sid’s sister was directing. Laila got the understudy role but never actually rehearsed anything, so when she actually got the part, she was unprepared and rightfully kicked from the show but she got mad for some reason. That’s another reason why I don’t like her.
I don’t know why I want to feel bad for Joey cause of what happened to her and I do feel bad and that should never happen to anyone female or male, but the way she’s such a performative activist especially a white feminist. But a lot of white women don’t want to include this discuss because they believe it will hinder the progress of feminism (actual facts). I’ve literally written a paper on how white feminism or feminism in general isn’t for women. Like in the case of Joey and Dom, Dom who was the actual victim was ignored when she was Joey inserted herself into a conversation that she had no part in. Because Joey was a white girl they took her words over Dom a black girl which caused two black kids to be suspend and expelled. That is not feminism at all, she thinks she’s doing something when really she’s made things worse for the people it really affects. Feminism isn’t just for white women it was made to create equality for everyone. White feminism is basically white supremacy by white women which is why so many unjust things are still occurring especially to women of color. White feminism is a bad thing and shouldn’t exist at all

To me the show is way more relatable than most of the teen shows. The characters are the types of people we all know and it covers real life issues. Shows like Euphoria are just bizarre to me because it's like eh worst case scenario of highschool. Grand Army had a lot of bad things happen in it but I like that it didn't super over sexualize the girls like Euphoria.
The racist thing with sid I saw it happen all the time in high school. I watch this boy whose family is Egyptian and he would let his lacrosse friend call him a terrorist. I feel like no one is talking about how much chemistry the actors have with each other. Might seem like a small thing, but it's definitely noticeable, and one of the things that kept me watching
As a high school student in nyc, this show was pretty accurate. The atmosphere was familiar to me if that makes any sense like the way they acted in school was similar to what Im used to. The show had a lot going on and I have to say it was entertaining. To clarify, while it may be familiar to me, it is in no way a good thing. Nyc high schools suck for the most part, the only part that’s interesting is all the drama that goes on. Just like the show, there’s a lot going on and it’s entertaining but most of the time the events aren’t good events.

Grand Army is the most realistic depiction of high school I have ever seen. I also appreciate how diverse the show was, I rarely see any brown skin black girls and south Asian people on my screen! My only gripe with the show is that I felt like they did too much with the sex. At times, it felt like the characters were oversexualized but besides that, I really enjoyed it.

I liked the show because I feel like it’s one of the closest portrayals of current teenage life... which is not saying much. Bar is on the ground. Directors really think we’re perpetually stuck in the 1980s. Anyways, it brought me certain awareness about topics like feminism and SA, etc... id even say it was one of the main shows that got me interested in feminism (and I learned not to approach it Joey’s way 😬). I’d say the characters are flawed, but still redeemable. Except Layla, she can really just 👉🏻🚔 I was really rooting for her at first two, as I am a former pick-me (embarrassing af). I think most girls are, and we all learn to grow out of it and want the best for each other. But she just kept getting worse and ✋🏻🙄

To be honest I don't know if I liked the show, but it felt a lot real to me, like I am based in India, so my culture is obviously different, but I could understand Dom's issues, have seen Liela in rl, and douchbags boys, the girl Joey who is woke and put herself into uncomfortable situation to prove herself(have been me, a little) but If I have to compare it to Euphoria, I will chose Grand Army any day, I have seen people going gaga over how great Euphoria is, and again I don't know the culture there, But to me GA seemed a lot real, it tries to cover many topics and I don't blame it for that
I think the reason why some westerners go crazy over euphoria is mainly the fashion, vibe and music and not the actual show because the show itself is very flawed, I am especially uncomfortable with the fact that it is on HBO and has nudity, because even though adults play them, it's still nude teenagers that are being shown, as they are supposed to be teens, and young as well, I just can't relate to Euphoria at all, it doesn't feel very authentic to me, I think they should have set it in University instead. I don't know why directors and writers are so intent on portraying high schoolers, these grown people are so desperate to portray children 10 or more years their junior. Why can't we have college, and I mean good college shows anymore. Also the show seriously is lacking in diversity, In grand army there were south and east Asian people and black teens, euphoria does not have that. I mean they want to tell the authentic teen experience, but choose to brutally traumatize their only black character who never actually did anything wrong but seek white validation I guess.

I refuse to watch euphoria after s1. There’s an overload of yelling and abuse. And even tho I know sex isn’t taboo, I think I’m still having to unlearn the shame behind sex. It’s just sooo overwhelming having to hear yelling and watch sex scenes every 5 seconds😭😭😭I think it’s also bc they’re playing teenagers, and they just keep showing everything. The show just triggered me so badly, that I was like “nahhh” I don’t think I want to watch anymore shows with SA either. Like I just can’t watch many things that add a bunch of triggers. “It just kinda seemed unfinished.” Idk if you know this but the was a cute little pandemic. I get the feeling that they got cut off by ms. Rona. Like they even mentioned the coronavirus situation in one of the later episodes so they were filming when this was a thing in our awareness and I feel like they probably just had to wrap it up when things got crazy. I’m not sure but that’s what it seemed like to me
i really like the character of joey because you can actually see how superficial everything in her life was before the SA. i think one of the most impactful scenes is when she goes out for a run and sees her friends that assault her and she just has a full on panic attack, it’s like, she can’t even just go for a jog or dance or go to school anymore. it’s even more impactful BECAUSE you saw her performative activism and how careless she was about things before
personally i think joey was doing her best with the small understanding she had about racism and sexism and other social issues. i think because we’re watching these characters after we’ve already been through high school or from a second-person perspective, we can see exactly where they went wrong and judge them for it, but in the moment a lot of us would have acted similarly or know people who we don’t exactly hate, who act similarly
Okay I feel like Jay wasn’t that bad of a character, I feel like we’ve all done something messed up in our life that we didn’t think through, jay honestly never meant to do anything to mess up dom or Owen. He felt bad bc he’s human I feel like they represented him well, if anyone with a good heart was in the same situation they would react the same way as jay
I will say as someone who went to school in BK NYC ( literally not far from the fake location of this school) kids have called in bomb threats as senior pranks. It happens a min of once a year. Its so fucked up but atm everyone is so used to it and because we walk. over to the elementary school a few blocks away most people leave and go shopping.
Is it a common consensus that people don't like this show? I enjoyed parts of it, especially how not 30 everyone seemed and how much it seems like it's set in actual modern highschool (though I'm 22 now so what do I know). Everything else I just chalked up to it being one of ~those~ teen drama shows. Especially how much you want to shake the characters who just don't get it. I enjoyed the trigger warning for the SA that they put in the show (and was able to skip past it), but I found it weird that they didn't warn for every single flashback. I was personally surprised how triggering I found the opening scene. I haven't been through it, and I'm Canadian, so I didn't think i had that baggage. Anything based on past events (Columbine) haven't affected me because it feels very fictional due to the time, but I didn't realise until watching this that we all really wondered if it would happen to us every day. So basically if any American is reading this and wondering, approach it with caution. Edit: man, Dom and friends really carried this show. After hearing what you think of it, yeah, without their through line of friendship the rest would be worse.

I think this is the most realistic portrayal of high school I've ever seen in a show. I actually loved every character except Leila obviously lol. Joey reminds me a lot of myself, but her activism is all social media based not a bad thing probably the only way she knows but yeah. I don't think her activism is performative she just has different ideas of right and wrong. Why was it wrong she took a knee if she also believes black lives matter? When she interfered with Dom she did what she felt was right but it wasn't, not all her fault cause the teacher was biased though. I loved Sids story because those microaggressions are real. He was finding himself and it was a literal fight. The representation of both cultures between Dom and Sid were awesome too. I loved the representation.

It was too real that was the problem, in the times we are living in we yearn for fantasy. That's why Euphoria is one of the most watched. It's treated more like a dream/nightmare of life. It has some realistic story lines but they are brought to extremes that would never happen and are pure entertainment. It was good timing for Euphoria. Grand Army might have worked way more in the late 90's early 2000's, when a lot more shows like that were on.
I really loved this show. It felt really realistic and I know that people didn't really like the characters or misogyny and racism, I feel like that's the point of the show. It in some way shows people's actual struggles in life; the casual racist remarks people face, the narcissistic behaviours people show, the way people preach about activism but aren't willing to call out the people close to them, etc. It just shows what happens in real life and if you guys want a more in depth kind of review you can watch Tee Noir's review on this, it's really good.

I think all of the "problematic" parts were meant to be on purpose for example the casual racism and joeys performative activism. these parts show things that happen in real life and no one takes seriously
I actually found this show to be surprisingly decent and realistic for a Netflix highschool based show (Dom was my fav character). I also think it was pretty important to show off Joey's character and how much she changes... what happens to her is horrible and disgusting but it's interesting to see this show follow the trope of "destroying" a stereotypical white feminist (or just what media considers a strong female character) in some sort of sexual way... it's unfortunate, but that's a weird fetish for lots of people. However, I think they did that on purpose, even in the show they call Joey a "performative activist." Kind of to show off how some women really do see feminism through a narrow, single person viewpoint, I think. I wish they would change her viewpoint on feminism and performative activism though, not based on SA, but I guess it was also important to show that not everyone is your friend (referring to Joey's disgusting douchebag "friends"). ALSO, Leila was absolutely horrible, she was so hard to watch and I skipped most of her scenes. All the other characters were a little boring though IMO. Nothing stood out too much. Overall the show wasn't... bad I guess? it's interesting looking back on it.
As an Indian , I personally related to how the Indian family was portrayed..like it's very real.. the way Sid's dad came around only when he got into Harvard , it was like that for me too...indian parents will sell their souls for good grades lmao💔 and the micro agressions to Sid was too real...like it's always like that , white people act they're allies but then act like that (most of the time) The show was very real to me and I think it was intentional for the show to make the characters unlikable and flawed Too bad it got cancelled and now we won't see the complete character arcs
i think the show made the white kids super micro-aggressive on purpose, because as much as they kept saying they weren’t racism they clearly were and you could see it. also it is very true that black and brown people are held to this super high standard by their parents and society at large

there was alot of misogyny and sexism throughout the show but that was there to bring light to the topics or atleast thats what they were trying to do but it came out all wrong and sloppy without actually addressing the misogyny, the creators just left it there and moved on to a different topic. Also i feel like jayson never really screwed owen over, it was owens idea to steal doms purse and he was the one to go inside her bag, even tho jay apologized alot to owen for it, it never was his fault. alsooo leila didnt send a threat because she wanted her bff back but she wanted to cancel the play because she screwed up her chance for the lead role more than once and if she cant be a part of the play than no one can. the whole season was pretty problematic but i want to watch the next season, most stories were left abruptly and every story wasnt remotely interconnected thats kid of why i want to watch the next season, this and to see character development because the base plot is good and the creators were trying to make a change by bringing up important taboo topics and grand army still has potential for a really good season 2 if they just fix the problematic parts and bring everyones story a little more interconnected.
Regarding the end I heard somewhere they had to suspend production around the time cuz you know COVID happened so maybe they had something more planned but couldn’t do it
i think the point of joey and her friends (up until episode 3) was to accurately portray white liberals in our time. i think they had a lot to handle from the first episode, so it would’ve been best if we just watched the characters deal with the fallout of the literal bomb threat rather than the hamfisted attempts we got at a suspenseful show. i think the sa scene was too much and wasn’t used really in good faith. i feel like we could’ve gotten to know (and maybe like) joey more before we were introduced to straight up trauma.
i 100% agree on the SA take. i actually really liked the show and the characters, i thought they got a really good mix of personalities and just ‘real’ ppl, but i cant rewatch it because of how heavily they went on Joey’s SA case. the scene, the aftermath, the confrontations, it’s good that it’s finally being addressed on TV more than a quick ‘u hurt me! >:(‘ kind of way, but it was very heavy and took up a lot of the season, there was no time to breathe or process what was going on.
I only watched the first couple episodes (I stopped before the episode where Joey got assaulted) so I didn’t really watch all of joeys scenes, but I did like that she took a stand against the dress code and the female solidarity when they all took off their bras that day to support her
You should consider watching BoJack Horseman. It’s on Netflix and it’s 6 seasons. So, it’ll definitely take you some time to get through. It’s an adult cartoon and each season has a central theme and tackles various things. You can definitely tackle it season by season, but just some food for thought. 💕

I actually think that what made the show so compelling was the fact that all the characters were somewhat flawed and not entirely likeable. I liked that it challenged us to think about causality and accountability. I think the fact that we weren’t so attached to any of the personalities made us more critical about their character arcs?

honesty laila is my fav character after dom! i think she’s a super accurate teen girl personality (aside from the murder fantasies ect), and the whole bomb threat thing topped her for me! she’s just so fucking interesting haha like you wanna stop watching but you just can’t look away sorta thing. she isn’t meant to be likeable and she isn’t, she’s super fascinating tho!
I liked that it didn't have typical "cool kids" who were the bad guys and "dork kids" who were the good guys. Everyone was just an actual human being and there wasn't any black or white. Everyone had faults and also some good in them.
Also, Laila was supposed to be hated. She did her job well.

I was impressed how they handled difficult topics on this show (for a netflix high school drama). This is the first time that I've seen a show actually show the consequences and trauma of SA. The psychological horror, the exhaustion of the process, the injustice... so upsetting and unfortunately realistic. Regardless if you like Joey as a character or not, I think the show did a great job at making us empathize with her.
This is a very important point to me because I've seen shows that have SA scenes but only to shock the audience and after that nobody cares anymore. The plot just goes on like nothing happened. It makes me really mad because these scenes are very upsetting to me but the topic is never adressed again
I actually liked the main characters... because they felt like real people and were not bad despite their flaws. Things like Joey's white feminism or Syd's misogyny/internalized homophobia, felt intentional becase those things allowed the characters to have arcs and grow. And then there were the super chill characters like Jayson, who was more of an immature kid than a bad person and Dom, who was gorgeous and smart and perfect. The only truly unlikable character for me was Leila, who ACTUALLY did things out of malice and messed with very serious stuff. In general I don't think characters have to be perfect to be likable and I actually enjoy when they have room to grow... and I'm not talking about the guys who raped Joey because they were clearly not meant to be liked in the first place... it's not a flaw making the antagonists unlikable.

To me it just felt like a more realistic euphoria- there was always a lot happening that it was lowkey hard to keep up. I liked it tho, I really could see myself in the characters. Something I think keeps happening with tv shows that display high school dramas is that nobody really fws the characters, but IMO that's fine because at the end of the day this isn't a movie- it's supposed to be displaying a more realistic high school experience and growth just doesn't happen that fast.

Laila got the understudy role but never actually rehearsed anything, so when she actually got the part, she was unprepared and rightfully kicked from the show but she got mad for some reason. But a lot of white women don’t want to include this discuss because they believe it will hinder the progress of feminism (actual facts). Like in the case of Joey and Dom, Dom who was the actual victim was ignored when she was Joey inserted herself into a conversation that she had no part in. Because Joey was a white girl they took her words over Dom a black girl which caused two black kids to be suspend and expelled. That is not feminism at all, she thinks she’s doing something when really she’s made things worse for the people it really affects. Feminism isn’t just for white women it was made to create equality for everyone. To me the show is way more relatable than most of the teen shows. The characters are the types of people we all know and it covers real life issues. Shows like Euphoria are just bizarre to me because it's like eh worst case scenario of highschool. Grand Army had a lot of bad things happen in it but I like that it didn't super over sexualize the girls like Euphoria.

As a high school student in nyc, this show was pretty accurate. The atmosphere was familiar to me if that makes any sense like the way they acted in school was similar to what Im used to. The show had a lot going on and I have to say it was entertaining. To clarify, while it may be familiar to me, it is in no way a good thing. Nyc high schools suck for the most part, the only part that’s interesting is all the drama that goes on. Just like the show, there’s a lot going on and it’s entertaining but most of the time the events aren’t good events.

Grand Army is the most realistic depiction of high school I have ever seen. I also appreciate how diverse the show was, I rarely see any brown skin black girls and south Asian people on my screen! My only gripe with the show is that I felt like they did too much with the sex. At times, it felt like the characters were oversexualized but besides that, I really enjoyed it.

I liked the show because I feel like it’s one of the closest portrayals of current teenage life... which is not saying much. Bar is on the ground. Directors really think we’re perpetually stuck in the 1980s.
Anyways, it brought me certain awareness about topics like feminism and SA, etc... id even say it was one of the main shows that got me interested in feminism (and I learned not to approach it Joey’s way 😬).
I’d say the characters are flawed, but still redeemable. Except Layla, she can really just 👉🏻🚔 I was really rooting for her at first two, as I am a former pick-me (embarrassing af). I watched the ending, like, five times. I didn't give a crap about the other characters. That last scene with Jayson made me cry every single time.
it was so powerful and seeing his grandfather look proud of him made me happy.
To be honest I don't know if I liked the show, but it felt a lot real to me, like I am based in India, so my culture is obviously different, but I could understand Dom's issues, have seen Liela in rl, and douchbags boys, the girl Joey who is woke and put herself into uncomfortable situation to prove herself(have been me, a little) but If I have to compare it to Euphoria, I will chose Grand Army any day, I have seen people going gaga over how great Euphoria is, and again I don't know the culture there, But to me GA seemed a lot real, it tries to cover many topics and I don't blame it for that
I think the reason why some westerners go crazy over euphoria is mainly the fashion, vibe and music and not the actual show because the show itself is very flawed, I am especially uncomfortable with the fact that it is on HBO and has nudity, because even though adults play them, it's still nude teenagers that are being shown, as they are supposed to be teens, and young as well, I just can't relate to Euphoria at all, it doesn't feel very authentic to me, I think they should have set it in University instead. I don't know why directors and writers are so intent on portraying high schoolers, these grown people are so desperate to portray children 10 or more years their junior. Why can't we have college, and I mean good college shows anymore. Also the show seriously is lacking in diversity, In grand army there were south and east Asian people and black teens, euphoria does not have that. I mean they want to tell the authentic teen experience, but choose to brutally traumatize their only black character who never actually did anything wrong but seek white validation I guess.

I refuse to watch euphoria after s1. There’s an overload of yelling and abuse. And even tho I know sex isn’t taboo, I think I’m still having to unlearn the shame behind sex. It’s just sooo overwhelming having to hear yelling and watch sex scenes every 5 seconds😭😭😭I think it’s also bc they’re playing teenagers, and they just keep showing everything. i really like the character of joey because you can actually see how superficial everything in her life was before the SA. i think one of the most impactful scenes is when she goes out for a run and sees her friends that assault her and she just has a full on panic attack, it’s like, she can’t even just go for a jog or dance or go to school anymore. it’s even more impactful BECAUSE you saw her performative activism and how careless she was about things before

personally i think joey was doing her best with the small understanding she had about racism and sexism and other social issues. i think because we’re watching these characters after we’ve already been through high school or from a second-person perspective, we can see exactly where they went wrong and judge them for it, but in the moment a lot of us would have acted similarly or know people who we don’t exactly hate, who act similarly

I will say as someone who went to school in BK NYC ( literally not far from the fake location of this school) kids have called in bomb threats as senior pranks. It happens a min of once a year. Its so fucked up but atm everyone is so used to it and because we walk. over to the elementary school a few blocks away most people leave and go shopping.

Is it a common consensus that people don't like this show? I enjoyed parts of it, especially how not 30 everyone seemed and how much it seems like it's set in actual modern highschool (though I'm 22 now so what do I know). Everything else I just chalked up to it being one of ~those~ teen drama shows. Especially how much you want to shake the characters who just don't get it.
I enjoyed the trigger warning for the SA that they put in the show (and was able to skip past it), but I found it weird that they didn't warn for every single flashback.
I was personally surprised how triggering I found the opening scene. I haven't been through it, and I'm Canadian, so I didn't think i had that baggage. Anything based on past events (Columbine) haven't affected me because it feels very fictional due to the time, but I didn't realise until watching this that we all really wondered if it would happen to us every day. So basically if any American is reading this and wondering, approach it with caution.
Edit: man, Dom and friends really carried this show. After hearing what you think of it, yeah, without their through line of friendship the rest would be worse.

I think this is the most realistic portrayal of high school I've ever seen in a show. I actually loved every character except Leila obviously lol. Joey reminds me a lot of myself, but her activism is all social media based not a bad thing probably the only way she knows but yeah. I don't think her activism is performative she just has different ideas of right and wrong. Why was it wrong she took a knee if she also believes black lives matter? When she interfered with Dom she did what she felt was right but it wasn't, not all her fault cause the teacher was biased though. I loved Sids story because those microaggressions are real. He was finding himself and it was a literal fight. The representation of both cultures between Dom and Sid were awesome too. I loved the representation.

It was too real that was the problem, in the times we are living in we yearn for fantasy. That's why Euphoria is one of the most watched. It's treated more like a dream/nightmare of life. It has some realistic story lines but they are brought to extremes that would never happen and are pure entertainment. It was good timing for Euphoria. Grand Army might have worked way more in the late 90's early 2000's, when a lot more shows like that were on.

I really loved this show. It felt really realistic and I know that people didn't really like the characters or misogyny and racism, I feel like that's the point of the show. It in some way shows people's actual struggles in life; the casual racist remarks people face, the narcissistic behaviours people show, the way people preach about activism but aren't willing to call out the people close to them, etc. It just shows what happens in real life and if you guys want a more in depth kind of review you can watch Tee Noir's review on this, it's really good.

I really loved it, I understand not liking the characters but the show represent high schoolers really well and makes a great job showing them as real persons

I think all of the "problematic" parts were meant to be on purpose for example the casual racism and joeys performative activism. these parts show things that happen in real life and no one takes seriously

I actually found this show to be surprisingly decent and realistic for a Netflix highschool based show (Dom was my fav character). I also think it was pretty important to show off Joey's character and how much she changes... what happens to her is horrible and disgusting but it's interesting to see this show follow the trope of "destroying" a stereotypical white feminist (or just what media considers a strong female character) in some sort of sexual way... it's unfortunate, but that's a weird fetish for lots of people. However, I think they did that on purpose, even in the show they call Joey a "performative activist." Kind of to show off how some women really do see feminism through a narrow, single person viewpoint, I think. I wish they would change her viewpoint on feminism and performative activism though, not based on SA, but I guess it was also important to show that not everyone is your friend (referring to Joey's disgusting douchebag "friends"). ALSO, Leila was absolutely horrible, she was so hard to watch and I skipped most of her scenes. All the other characters were a little boring though IMO. Nothing stood out too much. Overall the show wasn't... bad I guess? it's interesting looking back on it.
This show made me so anxious and idek why. After I watched it I cried for like an hour.

As an Indian , I personally related to how the Indian family was portrayed..like it's very real.. the way Sid's dad came around only when he got into Harvard , it was like that for me too...indian parents will sell their souls for good grades lmao💔 and the micro agressions to Sid was too real...like it's always like that , white people act they're allies but then act like that (most of the time)
The show was very real to me and I think it was intentional for the show to make the characters unlikable and flawed
Too bad it got cancelled and now we won't see the complete character arcs
i think the show made the white kids super micro-aggressive on purpose, because as much as they kept saying they weren’t racism they clearly were and you could see it. also it is very true that black and brown people are held to this super high standard by their parents and society at large

yk its really interesting how few shows get the "they're all flawed but you love them" trope right like one of the only shows that ever did was skin (with the exception of effy) like all the characters could be the worst people ever but you would still love them. idk how the writers did that, but i wanna know.
there was alot of misogyny and sexism throughout the show but that was there to bring light to the topics or atleast thats what they were trying to do but it came out all wrong and sloppy without actually addressing the misogyny, the creators just left it there and moved on to a different topic. Also i feel like jayson never really screwed owen over, it was owens idea to steal doms purse and he was the one to go inside her bag, even tho jay apologized alot to owen for it, it never was his fault. alsooo leila didnt send a threat because she wanted her bff back but she wanted to cancel the play because she screwed up her chance for the lead role more than once and if she cant be a part of the play than no one can. the whole season was pretty problematic but i want to watch the next season, most stories were left abruptly and every story wasnt remotely interconnected thats kid of why i want to watch the next season, this and to see character development because the base plot is good and the creators were trying to make a change by bringing up important taboo topics and grand army still has potential for a really good season 2 if they just fix the problematic parts and bring everyones story a little more interconnected.

Regarding the end I heard somewhere they had to suspend production around the time cuz you know COVID happened so maybe they had something more planned but couldn’t do it
that's what i thought too but then I thought it was weird because they actually referenced COVID in the show which made me think theyd end that way
i think the point of joey and her friends (up until episode 3) was to accurately portray white liberals in our time. i think they had a lot to handle from the first episode, so it would’ve been best if we just watched the characters deal with the fallout of the literal bomb threat rather than the hamfisted attempts we got at a suspenseful show. i think the sa scene was too much and wasn’t used really in good faith. i feel like we could’ve gotten to know (and maybe like) joey more before we were introduced to straight up trauma.
i 100% agree on the SA take. i actually really liked the show and the characters, i thought they got a really good mix of personalities and just ‘real’ ppl, but i cant rewatch it because of how heavily they went on Joey’s SA case. the scene, the aftermath, the confrontations, it’s good that it’s finally being addressed on TV more than a quick ‘u hurt me! >:(‘ kind of way, but it was very heavy and took up a lot of the season, there was no time to breathe or process what was going on.
I only watched the first couple episodes (I stopped before the episode where Joey got assaulted) so I didn’t really watch all of joeys scenes, but I did like that she took a stand against the dress code and the female solidarity when they all took off their bras that day to support her
You should consider watching BoJack Horseman. It’s on Netflix and it’s 6 seasons. So, it’ll definitely take you some time to get through. It’s an adult cartoon and each season has a central theme and tackles various things. You can definitely tackle it season by season, but just some food for thought. 💕

People hate Diane because they say she isn't a fleshed out character, she isn't really depressed, she's a hypocrite, she was so ungrateful to Mr. Peanutbutter. These are all the reasons given to hate Diane. I would advise you to look up character analyses of Diane on CZcams. Go directly to the comment section. You'll see people talking about the hate there.

Most of the characters are so annoying but what i like about the show, it's that it is realistic.
I actually think that what made the show so compelling was the fact that all the characters were somewhat flawed and not entirely likeable. I liked that it challenged us to think about causality and accountability. I think the fact that we weren’t so attached to any of the personalities made us more critical about their character arcs?
This is sooo true damn it. I just finished watching it and I’m speechless. You put my thoughts into words... and yeah the characters r really unlikeable. I thought it was really frustrating coz sometimes I feel sympathy 4 the characters but then they do really problematic things...

honesty laila is my fav character after dom! i think she’s a super accurate teen girl personality (aside from the murder fantasies ect), and the whole bomb threat thing topped her for me! she’s just so fucking interesting haha like you wanna stop watching but you just can’t look away sorta thing. she isn’t meant to be likeable and she isn’t, she’s super fascinating tho!
