    This is a 16mm film scan of an unknown Alice in Wonderland pilot film from Japan. The print was scanned by us in 4K, and had significant damage and color fading. The damage and color was corrected as much as is reasonable, but without any reference it was difficult to tell what is or isn't correct. There is tape across a few frames near the beginning that was not removable from the film as it would have ripped off the emulsion, so the decision was left to leave it on the film. Those frames will appear black. The print has sound, but not acted voices, so it is an incomplete product. All the voices that do appear are prerecorded.
    There are no credits anywhere, and searching online for more information yielded no results. Because of that, we do not know where this print came from, who made it, or what actual purpose or hope it was made for. It is possible that we have stumbled upon some real lost media here.

    My slightly educated guess on its origins is that Mushi Production animated this around the early 70's. Here's why I think that:
    - First of all, I know that look from anywhere, from being super familiar with their early 70's work (mainly the Animerama trilogy and their Rankin/Bass collaborations). The animation and overall design tropes line up with anime trends around the time, and it especially reminds me of their output from around that time. The film being from a very faded Eastman lines up the early 70's timeframe even more.
    - Adding onto that last point, that lineart is clearly inked by hand. MushiPro was one of the very last to do all their linework by hand when every other anime studio went to Xeroxing by that point.
    - Additionally, a Japanese commenter also guessed it was MushiPro too, since it reminded them of their Moomin anime animation, music, and sound-wise.
    - They WERE dying around the time I guessed this was from. This very well could have been an unproduced pilot from them that obviously never went anywhere when they went belly up. It could certainly explain why we have nothing to go by on this anime.
    I could be wrong but I think I have a very good guess going here. I'd love to see what others think, too.

      For me the design doesn't match MushiPro, but could be. Maybe fits Tatsunoko more? The eyes of the girl should be the key and mushi doesn't have anything similar. Tatsunoko fits more imo. But the music does sound like Mushi, as the song style and drumming at minute 0:50 is similar to the first song in A thousand and one nights czcams.com/video/lo_8QQLCgE8/video.html&ab_channel=XelrogT.Apocalypse which music was done by the band The Helpful Soul. This song is included in their first album from 1969 as the last song czcams.com/video/W-HiHUV_Tlc/video.html&ab_channel=BrownSugar maybe i'm overspeculating hahaha I'm just trying to add as much info as possible to figure this out :) at least the style of the songs is similar and matches to the anime in a 60's environment, while wouldn't fit in the 70's-80's scenario because the music would be considered too dark for a kids/girls movie. But the woman at the beginning, the rabbit and the girl... I don't see that style in the 70's. Also the backgrounds are very 60's

      @@davidvicente83 An extremely good guess too!
      Granted, this is MushiPro we're talking about here too, as they were scarily good at adapting to designs not their own (their Moomin show, their Rankin/Bass collabs, etc). Who really knows though? I'm loving the speculation regarding this whole thing. Haha

    I'm amazed at how frequently Hitler seems to show up in anime. To that end, this reminds me of Mystery of Mamo.

    The music and character design really scream 1968-1973 to me. I'm impressed by how good the animation is given the age. It's got a great style.

    For some reason the background artstyle and the music gave me a similar wibe from Belladonna of Sadness. It's like a fever dream that has elements from Zuiyo, Tatsunoko and Toei works of the era mixed together with a west-slavic cartoon seasoning on it.

    Correction: The rabbit at the end has the only bit of recorded dialogue for this pilot. Unless that's taken from elsewhere too.

    For anyone wondering about the date of my comment, the video was made available early to Patreon supporters of the group.

    I would guess it's from the 70's. Mainly due to the music and the fact that it was faded, which is very common with pre-1982 film. it also has to be close to the negative in generations since it looks quite sharp.
    PS: is the film kodak of fuji? you can track down the date on some kodak stocks by the markings on the side of the film.

    • @KinekoVideo
      @KinekoVideo  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It is Kodak, but there is actually no edge code on the film that would identify the year it was manufactured.

  • @davidvicente83
    @davidvicente83 Před 7 měsíci +2

    Nice! I'd say this looks like mid-late 60's. First I thought early 70's but the girl's face is obviously very 60's and several things about the animation as well... if I have to guess I'd say this is from 1967-68. The zoom effect used at 3:31 for example is used in series like Mach go go go, which also share some similar style in character design. And character design is pure tendency, so a film like this has to be clearly from a point where this style was more or less a trend.

      @fmsyntheses Před 7 měsíci

      I would be shocked it were earlier than the mid-late 70s. For one thing it's in color, and anime needed some serious pedigree to get made in color in the 60s. I lean more towards early 80s. I at least think it came sometime after Monty Python, because I'm convinced it's inspired by Terry Gilliam's animations in the Flying Circus.

    • @TheWorldDBZ
      @TheWorldDBZ Před 7 měsíci +4

      @@fmsynthesesI think you don’t know what you’re talking about. The last B&W TV anime was produced in 1969 and other anime switched to full color earlier than that.
      Also nothing in this feels ‘80s. Animation quality, character designs, music, there’s just nothing implying this is from the ‘80s.

    • @davidvicente83
      @davidvicente83 Před 7 měsíci +1

      so true @@TheWorldDBZ . Also this doesn't look something planned for TV imo, it was meant to be a pilot test for a film, so to be in color is normal. The character designs must fit the trend of its epoque, since there is no previous manga author in this case so the style has to be kinda "generic"

      Hey, there is also a surviving intro to a forgotten (1960s-70s) anime adaptation of Bōken Daikichi, a notable picture story. Unlike the source material, it has obvious sci fi elements.

    This is oddly primitive, it feels like a student group project, where each student would get a short segment. So many coloring errors like the chess piece and in the underwater section, and just a general disconnect in the work, like the spiders legs not really caring about where the web is.
    A very interesting artifact though.
