The topic of nuclear weapons has been an ethical and moral issue since their inception, and this is especially true for the Japanese, the only people in history to have suffered from their direct effects. However, much less discussed than the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, are the tests conducted by the United States in the early 1950s with their far more powerful hydrogen bombs at the Bikini Atoll islands. During one of these tests, on March 1, 1954, the US detonated a hydrogen bomb that caused the crew of a nearby Japanese fishing boat to suffer lifelong, long-term effects caused by radiation sickness, leading to even death in some. This film attempts to educate about and comment on the event by demonstrating how devastating even being near the detonation of one of these weapons can be, particularly through the lens of a young Flying Fish whose life could not be more carefree and happy. All that turns to horror as he is stricken by radiation sickness himself, no one in his community knowing why or what caused it. This being the second time in not even the span of a decade that the Japanese suffered the effects of a nuclear weapon, the film paints a strong argument against the use of such things even in testing, and begs the question: the wildlife there must have suffered during these tests too, didn't they?
This is the full educational short film called "Tobiuo no Bouya wa Byouki Desu" (The Little Flying Fish Gets Sick). This comes from a 16mm print that was likely used for screening in educational settings such as libraries and schools, which was scanned at around 4K resolution. The print was severely damaged, with many splices and acetate-deep scratches, and had a ton of dirt and dust. Most of these were automatically removed for this restoration, but due to its severity, some of the damage was far too difficult to remove without complex manual restoration, so there are still instances of splices and deep scratches throughout. Please forgive the rough presentation. The film also did not receive a complex color correction pass as there was no way for us to verify what the original production colors were, but it did receive a white balance pass. The audio is sourced from the print itself, which you can see is not in the greatest shape either and pops/jumps at points.

This may be a color degradation problem in preservation but it was more impactful seeing the color palette change to less saturation to fit the tone of the story.
Wow, this made me cry and I'm not that much of a crier when it comes to stuff like this. My grandfather narrowly avoided the bomb in '45 because his father was at home sick with the family taking care of him. My grandmother's mother's family sadly was lost. I'm not too sure who was still around, though I believe it was just one relative. The saddest part? She was in an internment camp, unaware that the bomb had dropped in her hometown. She only found out what happened when she went back years later.
Thanks very much for sharing your family's experience. This is why it's important to preserve works like this, so the memories are not forgotten.
It's like a dream I had recently. There was radioactive snow in the streets and children were playing in it, not knowing any better....
Barefoot Gen but with sealife
In all seriousness though this is a really neat find and you did a good job on restoring.
My first thought was Spongebob Squarepants prequel as both of them take place at Bikini Bottom, but agreed
a online friend of mine got scared of barefoot gen. that he made it a rule not to mention it in his animation studio server
imagine watching this in school and discovering you have epilepsy. wonderful work restoring it.
Dear Little Flying Fish, now you are an an Angel. I hope one day to play with you. Your pure heart has much to teach me. The grim life has changed me, so often I forgot how to be pure as much as you are. 😢
Did I just emotionally invested in a story about a fish? Yes. Yes I did
If I was a kid in a Japanese school and I saw this, I'd be absolutely terrified. Wonderful job restoring this! The detail wasn't lost
Never knew fish would wear pants.
Where was this channel my entire life?
The flying fish 😭
Thank you so much for making this available, I'm really glad to be able to watch it!
amazing work, just as it was released today :)
Is there any way to make subs available?
So Spongebob and everyone in Bikini Bottom are Japanese? Spongebob is an English dub anime?
