This is a 16mm film scan of the animated short film "Sea Cat," a film produced for educational purposes regarding nuclear abolition through the drama of anthropomorphic animals. It conveys a peaceful and anti-nuclear message, and follows the story of the titular Sea Cat, who is raised by a sea otter and encounters a sea monster, which in actuality turns out to be a man-made nuclear submarine. The film was produced by Oh! Productions after securing funding from the Kishiwada City Teachers' Union, apparently as a "hobby" film, so it may be rough around the edges here and there when it comes to its story and message. There may be evidence that the film may have been broadcast on television before, but there supposedly exists no home release of it whatsoever, even VHS, so this is the first time it's being made available to the public on a wider scale aside from occasional film screenings in Japan.
The print was acquired and scanned by us in 4K and subbed by our friends over at LonelyChaser fansubs. The print arrived in very good shape, with great color and picture quality. It is a little dirty, but nothing was done to the original scan other than cropping and encoding for CZcams and download, so what you see is the print's natural state.

Hi there! I don’t have a twitter account but I do have something that i think you guys would be interested in that I’d loved to get properly restored/scanned/remastered? Is there another means of getting in touch with you outside of twitter?
Yes, please check our channel for some other contact methods.
I dont think anyone was expecting it to end like that... even with the context in mind.
This anime is so obscure it isn't even listed on Anime News Network or MyAnimeList.
Yeah, I was looking through it and couldn't find it unless the japanese title is also posted, doubt this was titled 'sea cat' in japanese.
@@thejazzo3595 It is literally called sea cat. The Japanese title is 'shii kyatto', which is the phonetic Japanese spelling of 'sea cat'.
@@fmsyntheses I see, can't find anything in that romaji either.
It’s on Anilist if that matters:)
"Come on it's just an animation about cats"
How come it is THIS emotional
How come it is THIS disturbing
How come it is THAT strongly causing me to cry
i have no words
Thanks for saving animation history that could be lost forever.
Literally none of that went as expected
I should have read the description, understanding that it's anti-nuke makes the ending make some kind of sense
That scene when the rolling credits start got me... it got me real real bad.
The shot of the mother cat watching her kittens getting taken away
It's a good day whenever Kineko Video uploads, and it's an even better day when the upload features cats!
WHERE DID THE FUCKING SPACESHIP COME FROM
Oppenheimer (2023) wants what Sea Cat (1988) has.
That escalated quickly!
Otters and cats; a double whammy of kawaii.
[SPOILER]
So I guess the main character's siblings just died at sea?
no anime ever before had my crying this fast as this one
2 min in and I'm already crying. I am too weak 😭😭😭
From the opening I'm not sure I want to watch this, am I going to cry like a bitch?
I was like, aw so cute-- oh no...
You'll be okay! It has a few sad moments but I didn't think it was too upsetting.
Love this! Thank you so much for saving this!
Thanks for this upload.
It's the first time I watched something not listed on MAL. Hopefully, someone makes an entry for it soon.
umineko ;) pretty dark for short kid movie
Merci d'avoir mis en ligne ce petit chef d'œuvre méconnu : il a été réalisé par Taku Sugiyama avec le studio Oh Production fondé par entre autres le grand Kazuo Komatsubara !
Even with subtitles.. I really appreciate it.
omg.. all of the anime cat doodles in the credits are so gooood i love them
Sad and crazy ending
really enjoyed this. thanks a lot
This was an interesting little film...I wasn't sure what to expect but it wasn't what I watched heh
The animation is well done, cute and just very 80's for the time. The "rough around the edges" was no joke considering that we're hit with 3 sad moments in the first five minutes lol, and that ending just makes you go "hmm...so what happens now?"
I love the two songs that were played at the beginning and end, despite the sad tone that was portrayed and the various cat drawings that were shown at the beginning and end. (I'd love to know more about those drawings, did they hold any significance in the making of this film, inspiration or were they just various sketches the people at the studio made to celebrate the film's release? Honestly, it's nice to see this film preserved, yes it's an oddball little film but it would have otherwise be lost to time, so I say that it's great that it was discovered.
why did the man throw the cats away again?
This is a Bluray level quality scan. Nice job!
Thank you!
I like the way film looks. The soft Texture. ☺️
Amazing!
Very nice
So sweet and sad
muito obrigada por isso!
EXCUSE ME?!
I need the Kyoto Video take on this.
First 5 minutes 👋🏻😭👋🏻
Thank you for preserving another piece of animation history~
Didn't expect to be watching an educational Anime today but here we are~
Thank you all for your hard work, Keep it up m(_ _)m
I hope your having a lovely day, Have a wonderful week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)7
And you too fellow viewer ^-^
Why make me cry like that
What do you do with the film materials you get after scanning them? Do you store them in cold?
We keep our scans preserved on LTO Tapes mostly. As for the film prints themselves, most of them are kept in cold storage like you said, but ultimately it's up to whoever bought them to decide what to do with them. They can keep or sell them, or whatever, we are more concerned with the digital transfers, so as long as those are safe.
Hi there, I’ve got a small film reel with a theatrical trailer for a certain dubbed anime movie, it’s under 2 minutes long. I’d be interested to get that transferred and restored by you guys, how could I go about getting that done?

@@KinekoVideo you should be equally concern about the film prints too...
omg so sad 🤯😭😭. This anime isn't even listed at MAL.
I just checked, MAL has it now. Anilist also listed this anime on their database.
Wanna say that I i appreciate what you guys are doing and i found out about you guys because of Kenny Lauderdale.

It's so totally not-sus unlike dreamhunter
Umineko?
hooray for the video description box, cause if you asked me what the educational part of this video was just from watching i'd give a unconvinced answer about humans being self centered assholes and not caring much about the ecological damage war can do
what was the point of there being 3 kittens at the start if 2 were only going to drown before they got a single line? what happened to cat mom? why bother having the little girl and her mother show up?
Why does this feel like a multi animator project that weren't on speaking terms for more then 3 days over the course of the entire project?
Apparently each shot of Sea Cat was done by different animators in their free time, so that would probably explain the forgotten aspects and the multi animator project feeling.
Japanese people were unfortunately reminded 2 times that hope for life on earth lies only 'out there', wherever that may be...
😂 Promo-SM
Wtf did i just watch?
