This is a 16mm film scan the theatrical animated Leiji Matsumoto adaptation of Journey to the West known as SF Saiyuki Starzinger, based on the TV anime of the same name. This film has not received an official HD remaster, and thus, this serves as the first time it's ever been seen in high definition. LaserDisc audio was also synced to this scan as it's the highest audio quality source available, beating out the DVD releases as well.
The print was acquired and scanned by us in 4k. The original subtitle script by RZ Productions was gone over & polished by our friends over at THE SKARO HUNTING SOCIETY for use within their fansub release, which they put out long ago using a DVD rip-this film scan should serve as a nice upgrade over their old version. Since the film was produced in scope resolution, our release reflects the proper theatrical aspect ratio; the 16mm print was also a scope-matted downconversion of the two 35mm reels the film would have been normally shown with theatrically, so it looks quite high quality for the format, despite being slightly dirty, beat up, and in some places moldy. The color was also beginning to fade significantly, so color correction was necessary for this release.

Huh?! Cinemascope on 16mm??? Nice rarity, and restoration is nice too.

It was pretty common for film prints for small local screenings

For a while, if you wanted an anamorphic lens for shooting video, the most cost effective way was to source a 16 mm 2x anamorphic adaptor made for projectors. And. It probably is one of the cheaper options even though lens manufacturers have started doing at least some anamorphic lenses that are approaching affordable.
This also suggest that 16mm anamorphic projection lenses were quite popular
Also, I guess. it was the simpler way to get cinemascope prints onto 16 mm for post-cinema distribution as otherwise you'd need to desqueeze the image during the transfer. With this method you could use standard reduction-optics to get from 35mm print to 16mm internegative.

    Nostalgic.
I used to watch Starzinger as a kid while waiting for my mom to pick me up from school. The school had a VHS of this, Silver Fang, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils anime adaptation, and I believe some World Masterpiece Theater show as well (my memory is a little fuzzy on that one). And some random assortment of Moomin and Disney Afternoon stuff recorded off TV as well.
Even though I was always the last kid to get picked up (basically right as they locked the doors for the day lol), having all those cartoons to watch made sure it was never boring

Sweet! I was just revisiting my childhood memory and keep coming back to Starzinger. I just recently discovered that there were a lot more episodes in Japan than in Denmark. Too bad they are not released with english subtitles, so I can get the full story! This looks amazing on my 4K monitor. Thanks for the flashback in 2024 quality!

There are so many old anime movies that would deserve such a wonderful high quality remaster, like Space Firebird 2772.

I do wish they had reanimated the Starzinger intro footage for this release; seeing it cropped from 4:3 to cinemascope is not a good look
Not criticizing the people at Kineko Video, just the people who made the original film

I'm really looking forward to a 35mm scan of Sailor Moon R: The Movie in its original 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio fully restored in 4K, much better than widescreen on Blu-ray releases.

1:11 it is like they knew they were too close to the camera, and pulled away so they would fit in the frame. Was this cropped for the theaters, or filmed like this? 2:05 holy carp! It's Mark, Jason, Tiny and Princess! 11:42 "Go get the monsters! Oh yes... screw you, explosive decompression! I do what I want!" and "We must kill the Algor ourselves!" Look.. I hate his political views and think he's a master hypocrite, but don't you think that's a little much? 12:19 I guess the cigarette burn proves this is indeed not cropped. 16:42 who knew Al Gore hated the environment all along? Then again, his dad was the owner of Occidental Petroleum.

Only the opening was cropped for theaters, the actual film itself is brand new footage made in scope resolution for cinemas.
