    So Confucianism is sort of a big deal, it's been the guiding principle of one of the largest empires on the planet for some 2000 years, but when was the last time you heard anything about Confucius himself? From his humble beginnings as a poor boy in the state of Lu to his... humble middle wandering China in exile and humble endings as a humble teacher in the state of Lu, this is that story.

      Zhou was an era sort of the development of the identity of the Chinese civilisation. Don't get me wrong our civilisation dates back to the Three August and Five Emperor period and has continuously existed ever since, but to culminate into what it is now wasn't instant. During Zhou lived the great philosophers who founded the civilisational philosophies of China. In addition to that, the way that our governments would work and their succession would also come to be developed. In Shang and Xia it wasn't certain of how dynasties would succeed one another, in Zhou it had started to become cleared up- of course, Zhou itself did work differently from future dynasties.

      the video oversimplified it the core teachings are the concept that the child has to respect the parent and return the parent is supposed to take care of the child with care and love and basically being a good parent, more emphasis was put on the child respecting the parent because that tends to be a bigger problem in chinese philosophy. However some parents do not follow this which basically destroys the balance of a confucian parental son relationship which becomes bad in the long run. However it is also said that the child is not allowed to disrespect the parent even if the parent is not fulfilling his parental role. Whether that should be a good thing is up for debate but ya thats the parental child relationship still grossly over simplified but i hope can give more context

    The creator also neglected to mention the fact that Confucius was an utter stud. He stood between 1.91-1.96m tall and was (of course, being trained from birth) an archery expert, which requires robust upper body strength and long arms. He once held an entire caber/city gate bar from its end single-handed, and while on the run went a week without food and emerged healthy while his pupils were all sick. He was also reported to run faster than hares and his father also once held open a vertical fortress gate, all by himself, to let an army in. All this, in addition to his monumental wisdom, make him the ultimate chad.

    Honestly, I doubt that the core of the Imperial Exam system was ever developed by Confucius. If anyone would develop it into a structured system it would be the Legalists, a faction of philosopher/technocrats who highly value competence and merit and promote a meritocratic system where everyone obeys the law. The Legalists were in perpetual conflict with the Confucians because the Confucians promote social (hierarchical/pecking) order which is open to a lot of abuse, incompetence, and corruption exactly because the Confucians prefer an open interpretation of laws as being guidance to society as opposed to the Legalists's view of laws binding people's actions and behavior. The end result is that the hyper efficient bureaucracies that the Legalists developed were absorbed in whole by succeeding dynasties led by shitty Confucians who gave zero fucks about the legal system.

      @HighPriestFuneral Před 2 lety +2

      Let's not pretend the Legalists were perfect. The draconian laws of Qin caused many people to rebel simply to save their lives. There is an approach that is more balanced that worked better for everyone. There was a competing idea about what Confucius' message was shortly after his death with his school being split several ways. One of those paths was Mencius' school which focused on "All men are born good, the ruler's job is to be the proper parent to the nation and treat all of its people as their children." Then there was Xunzi's school that said "All men are born evil, it is through ritual and education that we reform ourselves to become better. Laws are necessary in an imperfect kingdom, but once good rulers have ruled for 100 years, then laws can be removed." This idea morphed into a form of Legalism once Shang Yang's ideas became more popular.

      That's not entirely fair. Many of the emperors that followed Confucius were generally good people for the land. Of course there were some bad actors, but it's not a good idea to paint everyone with that same brush.

    TLDR: guy was born an illegitimate son, so father married a 17 yo to have another son, then dad died, so he was poor, but got a good education anyway, got a job because of the education with the duke, but got in trouble with the duke, so he figured it was time to go on tour, but tour wasnt great, so he decided to teach young men morals, who wrote books about his teachings, and the books were all the bang.
