On Friday the 13th, a semi truck tempted its fate at the canopener bridge and got briefly stuck. The driver dropped the air suspension, thereby lowering the cab just enough to escape the grip of the hungry beast. Even though damage was minimal, enough unintentional contact was made for this to count as #160 since 2008. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
This bridge needs a "days since last accident"sign.
Residents can tell the exact time of the last accident by the scratchmarks on the overhead-bar.

I honestly think that (for those drivers who even bothered to read the sign) many of them read it as "Overheight vehicles must turn." They're reading it as general info rather than as direct, immediate instructions. Maybe change it to something like "Overheight! Turn now!"
Good point though it is singular which means they're getting singled out as having to turn
They should install a height check bar that drivers will hit if they are over height
@@flyguy0765 I think that's that the can-opener is meant to be xD
@@flyguy0765 That's what the crash bar is for.

I've worked with guys like this. You explain the rules to them and how things work. They nod in agreement and make all the right noises - but at the back of their mind they are thinking 'well that can't possibly apply to me'.
Or, like Homer Simpson, their ears are turned on but ignored and they're listening to the Meow Mix jingle inside their head.
I work with Head Bobbers, right after they nod and say OK they do the exact opposite thing!
When American Truck Simulator finally reaches the North Carolina DLC, I hope this bridge is included.

The smartest driver I've seen on this channel. Yes, he missed the sign but he didn't destroy the tractor or trailer. Made my day.
The sad thing is the bar for driver intelligence is lower than this bridge.
He should've just turned from the get go though. A semi driver has no excuse, he should know his truck and roads he's driving on.
I'm sorry, but this being an actual truck driver makes this inexcusable. That driver SHOULD know the height of his truck as it's something pounded into your skull during training for the job. I was taught, "if you're close or not sure, don't risk it!" I can understand the rental trucks and box trucks because usually you don't need a CDL to drive them, but a CDL holder should know better.
@@watchyourtimeco1It's sad but true, but this really is one of the smartest ones. But, he actually slowed down to a crawl so he could back out if need be, which is all the more telling because he actually KNEW that he wasn't going to make it. Truck drivers, of all people, KNOW full well that those signs aren't put there to be general guidelines or suggestions. They know that every single sign is to be taken very literally and followed to the letter.
@@sped6954 Oh yeah this guy had to know! I mean, it caught on his fairing and his trailer was a good foot taller! Not knowing your trailer height is understandable, but I've never heard of any trucker not knowing the height of their tractor!

how could everyday person rent and drive a truck?
@@rama3njoy it's very easy to rent a truck. With a normal license you can rent a uhaul, Ryder, ect . It goes by weight and if the vehicle has air breaks.
@@bobayotte2940 Yes, too easy. In Europe you can rent/drive maximum of 3,500kg on a regular driver's license (in the UK, up to 7,500kg if you passed your test before 1998 IIRC, not sure about mainland Europe). Similarly, a vehicle with maximum of 9 seats (okay, 16 seats if it's for voluntary/social purposes). All good rules in my opinion.
In the US, most states allow driving a vehicle up to 26,000lbs (11,800kg), or any recreational vehicle (remember, some RVs are 3-axle buses without the seats!)... in my view, such allowances are insane, especially considering the driving test is so easy in many US states that a 10-year-old would not struggle to pass...
@@rama3njoy In the US it is surprisingly easy to rent a surprisingly large truck - I have rented a truck in the US with nothing more than a car licence, that had a 25ft/7m box, which in the UK would be a Class 3 Heavy Goods Vehicle, capable of carrying 14 metric/ GKN Chep pallets/ 14,000Kg. That is typical of many of the Penske trucks that have hit the bridge in these videos.

As a retired drver of 22 yrs. as of last year Semi truck van are usually 13'6". Now being said, I have actually went under less height. Dropping the airbags can lower you about 6-8" maybe a little more (I'm only guessing because I never measured it) but a foot, NO. As you see he hung up the truck, the truck is lower than the van trailer, meaning when dropping the airbags it was able to come free. It's not gonna drop a foot. Maybe something like a 13' bridge. The reason "I've" done that in case you're wondering why we truckers take that chance is because times I've done that the place I was looking for would be in that area and by the time i realized it would be past this low bridge there wouldn't be nowhere else to go but forward or back up ever how far it may be to another road. But like I said if it was that low then I was pretty much backing up. As you see here he had another choice and enough warnings. He could be an inexperienced rookie because an experienced trucker would not have tried it.

"If I move real slow and squint, I think I can make it"
@Clawbytes Some are, some aren't. You can tell this one isn't because it's only slightly taller than the barrier.
Unless the sign says "exactly" there actually is extra clearance. But the driver is taking his chances by going for it -- it's not a specific amount. A 12'4" truck could fit under this bridge, but only because of the extra few inches.
Most trucks are 13,6 if I see 12 foot anything I'm hitting the breaks and planning my escape

If that truck would've been going the speed limit, the bridge would have had a great dinner.
Or run the red light like so many others we've seen...
All it had was a little taste. Such a tease, but still worth the watch.
There are sensors there that make the light turn red when an overweight truck is detected so that they have to stop. The intention is that while stopped they have time to read the big flashing sign. The reality is that drivers either run the red light or ignore the sign entirely. What they should really have is a "no trucks allowed" on that particular block, then there's no chance trucks will make this mistake.
There's literally nothing on that entire street that large trucks need to go to. The only reason this happens is because this street links directly to the highway so trucks think they can just go straight down it. If the "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign read, "OVERHEIGHT VEHICLES MUST TURN", then it would actually be complete, valid English, and perhaps fewer drivers would misunderstand it. On the other hand, it could read, "VEHICLES OVER 12' 4" MUST TURN". That would save having to look at two separate signs in different locations, then doing some computation in one's head and deciding whether to continue, stop, or turn, all within a split second. Whilst at the front of the queue, waiting for the traffic lights to change, drivers have plenty of time for this (as did this one), but if the lights are already on green with traffic moving, it's a disaster waiting to happen.
As it is, the flashing "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign distracts from the 12'-4" signs, so that doesn't really help.
All things considered, it's not surprising this happens so often. I call it bad signage.

Not gonna lie 5 years ago when I began car hauling, in Lansing i went past bridge height 12'9 and the jeep on top behind my bunk roof opened like a can of sardines, while everyone was watching me in shock, about 30 seconds into it I reversed real quick and shot out, the insurance never found out or police but because the car was from the auction I ended up paying 6,500 cash at delivery to the owner (that's what he paid at the auction) he was pissed . Anyways from that day on I never tried my luck with a bridge, I learnt my lesson.
im happy this bridge still has some action, i was scared it would have hearing about the re-grade.
The bridge will not be happy being teased like that. The bridge must be fed.
Yeah that driver was a massive bang tease 😂
😂
Trucker: "That sign is a mistake. Green light means go."
Wonder what it means for the drivers from some of the other videos who decided to go through the intersection when the light was red
What are you doing with your life? It's 10:43 PM on a Saturday and I just spent most of the day watching this channel....
What's more hilarious is despite the bridge being rebuilt higher, THIS IS STILL HAPPENING!
That sign needs two more settings:
"What, I said no!"
and
"Why..."
And, "That Means YOU!!!"
Or how did you pass driver's ed and trucking school
And: You, yes you. The person driving a truck reading this sign. YOU must turn!
It should flip down to windshield height
It scares me that all these truck drivers don't know the height of their trucks
Most do know but somehow still manage to hit them. My truck is 11'6" so i'd be ok here but that said im still cautious going under 11'9" bridges. Most round here are 12'9" though. Sometimes I have to use another truck which is 13' but whats off putting about it is that the cab is exactly the same as mine inside.
It's part of being an alpha male. It's like Brexiteers believing in Britain.
He was 13'6, me thinks that bridge is higher than 11'8, in all fairness he did get himself out of a bad situation and it will be a mistake he dont make again, the learning curve is different for some people.
@@kevindahlberg7753 It got raised to 12'4" a while back.
@@kevindahlberg7753 that happens. NYC lists their underpasses at lower heights by a lot. If any truckers followed the signs, no trucks would get any deliveries done. Even while on the truck route, the signs don't have the correct height.
Great save!
it's screaming at you - "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" - and yet here we go!
I don't understand why everyone is saying this guy is "smart". The other drivers were just not paying attention, this guy knew what the deal was, and still kept going
The other drivers often down have CDL certification. This guy has to and still doesn't know that a 13' 6" truck doesn't fit under a 12' 4" bridge.
And now you know where the stupid people who crash into it in the first place come from.
He was clever enough to take it really slow, to drop the suspension to escape, to back up perfectly with that big trailer, and to make the turn from what seemed like a very difficult spot.
It's just too bad he wasn't clever enough to not try it in the first place.
Was really hoping he was gonna go for another attempt
Kinda feel sorry for the guy, i can just imagine the frustration of needing to reverse and reposition that behemoth
I feel bad for him because he has to find a way around that bridge.
I imagine if there was an easy, short way around it, he wouldn't have tried to fit under this one.
This driver seemed like one of the more reasonable ones.
same, I felt so bad for him. Glad he managed to get out of it himself quickly though :)
What part of "Overheight Must Turn" don't you understand?
